AHMEDABAD: Police are looking towards south Gujarat for clues in the serial blast case, including proof of financial transactions and terror funds. Officials indicated that they were focused on certain small towns of south Gujarat where subversive movement is strong underground, fanned by madrasas and religious outfits that follow the orthodox form of religion.
"These madrasas and religious units have received funds from abroad, mainly Gulf countries. We suspect that this money may have been used for the serial blasts and to finance the terror operatives' other activities," said a senior police official. Zeroing in on the finances for this operation is one of the main lines of investigations followed by the sleuths.
"The illegal hawala channel is used for this purpose, where the financial transactions and transfer of funds are being carried out by word of mouth. We have tracked down two possible channels that would have been part of such a transaction. Scrutiny of their records is on," said a source.
"We are working on some concrete leads on the basis of which our teams are investigating the case and recording some detainees ' statements. However, it is too premature to say anything," said the source. A team has already been sent to south Gujarat for this purpose.
Earlier, a team of city police headed by ACP visited Mumbai and nearby areas for collecting information from Maharashtra police and question the detainees.
Halim's police remand extended
A metropolitan magistrate on Sunday extended remand of Muslim clergy Abdul Halim, a leader of Ahle Hadees sect, by two more days after the city crime branch told the court that it hoped to find leads regarding the recent serial blasts, on further interrogation of Halim.
In seeking extension of remand, the crime branch claimed that during the 14-day interrogation it had been found that Halim had visited Pakistan and stayed in three cities - Faisalabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Though the accused claimed to have gone there for study, the actual reasons seemed suspicious.
Police have also claimed that Halim admitted he knows Karim Thuntha, an absconder in the 1992-93 Surat blasts and who is suspected to have a link with the recent blasts too.
Moreover, the crime branch has sought to know whether any of the Muslim youths sent to Moradabad terror camps by Halim were involved in the latest terror attack. Halim's involvement in the alleged conspiracy to send youth for terror training was emphasized by a letter he had dashed off to Bakshi and Shaikh thanking them for their visit to the city. The repeated use of word "maksad" (intention) in the letter raised suspicion among police.
