Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has been asked to reconsider choosing a woman as his running mate by religious factions within the party.
Head of the party’s Islamic council Adam Naseem has said a woman contravened Islamic principles, shortly after Anni announced Dr Aminath Jameel to run alongside him in the upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, MDP President Dr Mohamed Munnavar, who has failed to assume his responsibilities since May, has officially resigned, ahead of an party campaign launch expected on Thursday.
Controversy
MDP religious council president Adam “BA” Naseem has called for a second consideration after Anni announced Shadow Health Minister Dr Aminath Jaleel as his nominated running mate to the national council on August 11.
Naseem says that a woman holding this position may be anti-Islamic as, according to Islam, a woman should not be head of state.
Dr Jameel has been part of MDP since the beginning and has played an active role in party activities.
According to media manager Mohamed Zaki, “Naseem said a woman should not be a ruler in an Islamic country. He said it contravenes Islamic principles.”
He told Minivan News: “Some MDP national council members said it can be done, because women have been rulers in other Islamic countries and the constitution does not prohibit it.”
Zaki said the running mate will be chosen ahead of MDP’s official campaign launch scheduled for Thursday.
Candidate
Anni, who as has the final decision as presidential candidate, has said he did not want to do anything against Islam and would again meet again with BA Naseem.
It is unclear whether or not Anni will now change his nomination in line with these views, but he appeared open to changing his decision, saying “the party has a number of very capable options.”
MDP president Dr Mohamed Munavvar formally announced his resignation from the party on Wednesday.
Munnavar, former attorney general, is now expected to join the Republican Party, a new group associated with former finance minister Gasim Ibrahim.
Munavvar was elected party president in June 2007, but has not been present at the party office since early May following the party’s primaries in April. MDP sent out a press release to say they “thanked” him for his service and wished him a “bright future.”
Vice-president Ibrahim Hussein Zaki took over as acting president in Munnavar’s absence.
Head of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group Hassan Afeef said, “We considered that he left the party after the primary…today is just a formality.”
