Three prisoners thrash ‘blasphemer’ inmate
By Shafiq Sharif
LAHORE: Three prisoners badly injured another inmate, jailed for burning pages of the Holy Quran, in District Jail Gujrat on Friday.
Two jail officials, a senior warder and a warder, were suspended for negligence of duty.
Superintendent Jail Malik Zia-ul-Din said that Rub Nawaz, resident of Sarai-e-Alamgir, was arrested in a blasphemous case registered with the Sarai-e-Alamgir Police Station under Section 295/B.
He said when prisoners were brought out in the jail compound on Friday, Shahbaz, Ghulam Rasool and Muhammad Khan, detained a cell adjacent to Nawaz’s, overpowered on-duty Warder Asad Abbas, snatched the cell’s keys and locked him in their cell.
The trio later entered Nawaz’s cell and repeatedly hit him on the head with bricks.
Abbas alerted other officials by shouting, upon which they reached the scene and captured the attackers.
Jail officials immediately moved Nawaz to a nearby hospital where he was given first aid. He was later moved to General Hospital Lahore, where doctors stated his condition was critical.
