ISLAMABAD - As many as 900 people have been killed in the sectarian violence in Kurram Agency since April last year, officials and residents of the volatile tribal region revealed on Sunday.

These hundreds of the ill-fated people killed in the fierce clashes included the death toll of 200 during the last two weeks. “In addition to the killing of hundreds, the violence has forced thousands of people to migrate to Hangu, Kohat, Peshawar and other safe places,” said an official desiring not to be named.

According to residents of Kurram Agency, the government has been unable to stop the fighting between Sunnis and Shias in Parachinar, Sadda, Alizai, Balishkhel, Pewar and other tribal area and hence more and more people falling to guns each and every day.

Islam Gul, a resident of Sadda, who has migrated to Kohat along with his wife and three kids, repented that the government and President were indulged in power struggle and they have no time to stop the bloodshed in Kurram Agency.

Sectarian violence is not a new phenomenon in Kurram Agency where well over 4 thousand people have been killed in off and on clashes between the Sunni and Shia tribes since the decade of 80s.

However, the clashes going on for nearly two years are more alarming for the country’s top security circles because of the reported involvement of Taliban in the ongoing violence.

The Shia population of Kurram Agency blames the Taliban for backing the Sunnis but the Sunni tribes belie the impression while alleging their opponents for having support of sympathisers from Afghanistan.

Advisor to the Prime Minister on Interior, Rehman Malik warned the warring tribes on Friday last that they had 72 hours to stop fighting or face the operation.

Nonetheless, an official in the political administration of Kurram Agency when contacted said that there was no let up in the violence and only in last two days nearly 30 people were killed on both sides.

Asking to anonymity, he said that the political administration had approached tribal elders on both sides for the restoration of peace but so far those efforts had not yielded any positive results
