LAHORE: The police have yet to identify the suicide bomber who exploded himself in Allama Iqbal Town and killed 10 people, including two policemen, while injuring another 41, including females and children, despite recovering his upper body.

The police said that the attacker wore ‘suicide underwear’, which is the first for a suicide attack. Senior police officials told Daily Times that the sprinters/bolts used by the terrorist had earlier been used by a group of terrorists functioning in Sargodha and its outskirts.

Local material: According to details, the five to six kilogrammes of explosive material used in the attack was manufactured locally, said a senior police official. He said that the terrorist had used sprinters and potassium chlorate in the explosives, which was considered more devastating than any other compound used in explosives. He said that the suicide bomber was wearing explosives below his waist, due to which his head and upper body was undamaged. Another senior police official said that the attacker was a local, and was dropped by his accomplices at the scene to “hit his target”. He said that the police had gathered details about the accomplices of the suicide bombers, and were investigating.

A team headed by Major Shafqat from Islamabad visited the crime scene on Thursday morning and collected details for forensic tests, said a police investigator. He said that the team had collected various samples from the crime scene for chemical examination and for forensic tests.

Attack in reaction: According to a senior police official, the incident might be in reaction to the arrests made by Iqbal Town Police in the last two weeks.

Intelligence sources believe that the explosion was in reaction to the militants arrested on Tuesday night from Jhang and its surrounding villages.

The sources said that two days before the GPO Blast, security personnel had arrested militants from Sargodha, Bhakkar and Mianwali, and had attested more militants from Shahdara a day before the blast. They said that suicide attacks on the FIA building and FIU house in Model Town were also in reaction to the arrest of militants, who were being interrogated at that time in both buildings. They said that the attack on the Navy War College was also a reaction to arrests made earlier.

Mere speculations: Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Muhammad Pervaiz Rathore said that the police were investigating the matter. “Information prior to any proper investigation can only be considered speculation,” he said, adding that the fingerprints and samples had been sent to NADRA and a forensic laboratory for the attacker’s identification.
