PATTANI, Thailand (AP) — A bomb exploded Monday outside an Islamic boarding school in violence-wracked southern Thailand, killing one person and wounding 12, police said Monday. A separate bombing wounded six people, in the latest violence attributed to an Islamic separatist rebellion that has entered its fifth year.

Suspected Muslim insurgents in Pattani province's Mayo district detonated a bomb at a pier about 20 yards away from the school, where officials and hundreds of local people were releasing fish into a canal as an act of merit-making, said police Lt. Vacharin Ammapitak.

The Mayo district chief was one of four people seriously wounded by the blast. Eight others were slightly hurt.

The officials had been attending an awards ceremony at the school for the district chiefs and village heads in the area, he said. Making merit by freeing fish or birds is a Thai tradition intended to assure good fortune.

In neighboring Yala province's Muang district, a bomb hidden in the front basket of a motorcycle exploded outside a shop, wounding six people, including three policemen, police said. The others hurt were the shop owner and two high school students.

The insurgency in the Muslim-majority southernmost provinces of Thailand has taken the lives of more than 2,800 people since flaring up in January 2004.

Little progress has been made in curbing the violence despite the presence of nearly 40,000 police and soldiers, as well as several changes of military leadership and strategy.

Many southern Muslims feel unfairly treated by the country's Buddhist majority, and their discontent has fueled separatist movements since Thailand annexed the area a century ago.
