Bangladesh Court Jails Islamic Militants
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — A court in northwestern Bangladesh sentenced seven Islamic militants Thursday to life in prison after finding them guilty of carrying out a series of bombings in 2005, a prosecutor said.
The men were involved in five separate attacks on Aug. 17, 2005, in Chapainawabganj, a town 145 miles west of Dhaka, Prosecutor Jahangir Mohammad Selim said, citing the judge's verdict.
No one was injured in the five bombings.
The men belonged to the Jumatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh group, which wants to establish strict Islamic rule in Bangladesh, a nation of 145 million people governed by secular laws.
The group has been blamed for more than 400 small bombs that exploded the same day across Bangladesh, killing two people and wounding dozens, as well as for a string of bombings since then that killed another 24 people and wounded dozens.
No recent attacks have occurred, however, and the government claims it has neutralized the militant group.
Six top members of Jumatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh were hanged last year, including its leader, Shaikh Abdur Rahman, after they were found guilty of carrying out bombings and killing two judges.
On Thursday, five of the defendants were in court while the two others were tried in absentia, Selim said. All can appeal the verdict.
