Slavery a threat to Sudan unity

SLAVE RAIDING since the 19th century continued to be part of the modern history of relations between the people of the North and South Sudan. As time went on and political life developed, this practice of slavery finds expression in different forms and shape.
Political oppression and religious segregation in Sudan remind the population of the slavery experienced by different generations.

More often than not, this has created bitterness and hatred — not helpful for unity and peaceful co-existence.

During the just concluded war, there were accusations from Southern Sudanese against the governments of the Sudan for allowing slave raiding to re-emerge in the country. Indeed, groups such as the Christian Solidarity International confirmed the existence of the practice in the Sudan. CSI went further and participated in slave redemptions — the act of buying and setting free those raided and sold.

Memories of the traumatic experiences lives on with us and it is not going to be forgotten in the next four years or so when the expected referendum for deciding for Unity or Separation will be conducted.

Thus, those who believe that unity of the country is the best option and will vote for it during the referendum, need to grapple with the painful and often suppressed reality of slavery, oppression and religious segregation in the Sudan’s modern history.

Let us open this wound understanding and healing to help us together to chart a healthier path for our country.
