Nooyi has been steadily consolidating her power at PepsiCo, one of the largest companies in the world with $35 billion in annual revenue and a $105 billion market capitalization. Last February Nooyi added the title of chairman to her chief executive position at the food-and-beverage giant, maker of Frito-Lay snacks, Pepsi beverages, Gatorade sports drinks, Tropicana juices and Quaker foods; a whopping 17 PepsiCo brands each generate $1 billion or more in annual sales. Nooyi has pushed PepsiCo to move beyond soda, first by helping to start the company's fast-food chains in 1997, and later by spearheading the purchase of Tropicana in 1998. In an effort to offset slowing business in the Gatorade division, Nooyi advocates vitamin and energy-infused water drinks. Nooyi was born in Southern India, and went on to obtain degrees in chemistry, physics and math and master's degrees from Calcutta's Indian Institute of Management and Yale University. She came to the U.S. from India in 1978. Prior to joining PepsiCo in 1994, Nooyi did stints at the Boston Consulting Group and Motorola. "Being a woman, being foreign-born, you've got to be smarter than anyone else," she has said. In April, PepsiCo made the largest corporate purchase of renewable energy certificates (similar to carbon credits) to date—three billion kilowatt hours.—Erika Brown

Militants Abduct More Than Hundred Pakistani Soldiers
Tariq Iqbal | Aug 30, 2007, 20:44
Pakistani officials believe that militants today may have ambushed a military convoy in the country's northwest and may be have abducted more than hundred soldiers.
The convoy was said to be traveling between the towns of Wana and Ladha in the South Waziristan tribal region near the border with Afghanistan.
"They're missing. We've had no contact with them since 2 p.m. (0900 GMT)," a military official who declined to be named, said.
The militants this week released 18 soldiers and one civilian official, killing one soldier, videotaping a teenaged boy cutting the soldier's head off.
It is believed that these incidents are related to the collapsing of the peace deals with the militants after the operation conducted in the Lal Masjid.

Vicars ban ‘un-Christian’ yoga for toddlers
Simon de Bruxelles
A children’s exercise class has been banned from two church halls because it is teaching yoga. The group has been turned away by vicars who described yoga as a sham and un-Christian.
Louise Woodcock, 41, who was looking for a new home for her Yum Yum Yoga class for toddlers was turned away by the Silver Street Baptist Church and St James’s Anglican Church in Taunton, Somerset.
Miss Woodcock says that the ban is ridiculous as the classes simply involve music and movement with no religious content. She said: “I couldn’t believe it when they suddenly said I couldn’t have the hall any more because yoga is against their Christian ethos. It’s crazy because we’re talking about kids pretending to be animals and doing exercise routines to rhymes.
“I explained to the church that my yoga is a completely nonreligious activity. Some types of adult yoga are based on Hindu and Buddhist meditation but it’s not a part of the religion and there is no dogma involved.
“This is a class for mums and children, which has yoga-inspired moves – but as soon as I mentioned the word yoga the church staff completely changed their attitude. They have completely misunderstood and are being narrow minded.”
Miss Woodcock, who has a two-year-old daughter, was given permission originally to use the hall at Silver Street Baptist Church for a children’s activity group. The Rev Simon Farrar withdrew his consent after discovering it was for yoga.
She was then turned away from St James’s Church for the same reason.
Mr Farrar defended the decision yesterday. He said: “We are a Christian organisation and when we let rooms to people we want them to understand that they must be fully in line with our Christian ethos.
“Clearly, yoga impinges on the spiritual life of people in a way which we as Christians don’t believe is the same as our ethos.
“If it was just a group of children singing nursery rhymes, there wouldn’t be a problem but she’s called it yoga and therefore there is a dividing line we’re not prepared to cross.”
The Rev Tim Jones, vicar of St James’s, said: “Any alternative philosophies or beliefs are offering a sham - and at St James’s Church we want people to have the real thing. Yoga has its roots in Hinduism, and attempts to use exercises and relaxation techniques to put a person into a calm frame of mind - in touch with some kind of impersonal spiritual reality.
“The philosophy of yoga cannot be separated from the practice of it, and any teacher of yoga, even to toddlers, must subscribe to the philosophy.
“Yoga may appear harmless or even beneficial, but it is encouraging people to think that there is a way to wholeness of body and mind through human techniques - whereas the only true way to wholeness is by faith in God through Jesus Christ.”
Miss Woodcock has now managed to book a village hall for her classes.

Art of Living Heralds Arab-Israeli Bonhomie
MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Aug. 30, 2007) - Along with a training for the Iraqi youth in Bangalore, India, the Art of Living Foundation, founded by H.H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, is also hosting a month-long special programme for people from the Arab world. A striking upshot of the programme has been the perceptible bonhomie among the participants form Israel and Arab countries.
Belying the perception of arch enmities between Israelis and Arabs, the participants co-mingle freely with one another, bringing glimpses of Sri Sri's vision of a "One World Family" or "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam".
"It's wonderful to be together with so many people from neighbouring Arab countries. The programme has brought us so close that I can't believe that Arabs and Israelis don't see eye-to-eye back home," says Yoav Yenon from Israel.
"Sri Sri is working to unite the world and this is most needed. Through this programme, he has shown that all differences melt once we are relieved of stress. It's amazing to see people from different cultures mingle so freely. We feel like one large family," says Seynab Beheshti from Iran.
After witnessing the bonhomie during the evening celebrations last week, a visiting Israeli journalist from Channel 10 News commented, "It is amazing to see people from my country so happy here. I never imagined Arabs and Israeli can mingle so freely with one other."
Along with 16 Israelis, over 150 Arabs, including Iranians, Jordanians, Bahraini, Lebanese, Omanis and Saudi Arabian, are taking part in the special training.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will be in Toronto to publicly conduct some of his legendary breathing and meditation courses from September 20-23. His programs on yoga, meditation and stress elimination and the service projects he has inspired have benefited over 20 million people worldwide representing all walks of life, religions, cultures and traditions.
Interview with H.H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar during his visit in September can be requested.

I am very impressed by Gujarat’s work culture, says Mahashweta Devi
Express News Service
New Delhi, August 25: While eminent writer-activist Mahashweta Devi praised Gujarat for strides made in development at the grassroots level, she criticised the West Bengal government saying that 30 years of Left rule has achieved "very little" in that state.
"I have been to Gujarat many times, especially during the 2002 communal killings. West Bengal had condemned Gujarat and perhaps this protest was justified. In West Bengal, Hindus and Muslims have learnt to live in harmony," she said while addressing the DS Borker Memorial Lecture series on 'My Vision of India: 2047 AD' here on Friday night.
"But I was deeply impressed to see the strong work culture in Gujarat. The city and village roads are well-built, even the remotest villages have electricity and access to drinking water. I was especially impressed with the medical facilities in the panchayats and local-level health centres. Not at all like West Bengal where, even now, villages and panchayat areas have hardly any electricity. The government's so-called 'swasthya pariseva' (healthcare service) is totally non-existent," she said.
"In West Bengal, which has been under a CPI(M)-led Left government for last 30 years, very little has been achieved," she said, alleging that starvation deaths and high child mortality are "rampant" in the state.

U.N. troops accused of abetting genocide
American Council for Kosovo documents 8 years of ethnic cleansing against Serbs
Posted: August 31, 2007

The cross that sat high atop St. Andrew the First-Called in Podujevo was torn down in one of many acts of vandalism designed to terrorize the Christian Serb community
WASHINGTON – United Nations forces moved into Kosovo in 1999 to "stop genocide."
But, according to a blistering new report from the American Council for Kosovo, U.N. troops have aided and abetted the deliberate, systematic and nearly complete ethnic cleansing of the mostly Christian Serb population by mostly Muslim ethnic Albanians.
"Every facet of the way of life of the Serbs of Kosovo is threatened by the new reality established since June 1999 under KFOR (the NATO Kosovo Force) and the U.N. and therefore the very existence of the Serbs there is threatened," says the report "Hiding Genocide in Kosovo."
"All kinds of persecution using all types of methods have been adopted," the report says. "Throughout the territory of Kosovo, the Serbs have been persecuted, a persecution that is happening on their own territory, in their own country. They are denied basic human rights and are not equal to their Muslim counterparts under the law. Even though the Serbs were the main targets, they were not the only ones. Consider the situation of the Croats who now number less than 500, or the Roma who have been banished to the edges of the Serb enclaves by persistent terrorization, or the Gorani, Slavic Muslims, who reside in the south west tip of Kosovo in the mountains and whose numbers dwindle every year."
(Story continues below)
Using a combination of eyewitness reports, diaries of the dead and interviews with survivors, the report pieces together a harrowing narrative about eight years of mostly low-intensity genocide by the Muslim ethnic Albanians now demanding independence for Kosovo.
A Serb home in Svinjare burns
The U.N., in conjunction with Western powers, has been working toward this end, which they term "the final status."
"The biggest lie: the internationals claimed they were coming to stop a genocide," writes James George Jatras, director of the American Council for Kosovo. "In reality, they are facilitating one. For the Serbs in Kosovo 'final status' can only mean a final solution."
Ethnic and religious violence between Albanians and Serbs in the Serbian province of Kosovo was not unusual leading up to 1999 when the Albanian majority drew NATO onto their side in an effort to tip the scales in the balance of terror.
Kosovo has been occupied by the U.N. ever since the war ended. But the new report attempts to document the U.N.'s continuing partiality toward the Albanians, who have turned more and more Kosovo Serbs into refugees, virtually emptying out many Serb-dominated villages and burning and defacing churches along the way.
Thirteen months of international talks on the future of Kosovo ended in stalemate earlier this year. Now, three diplomats from the U.S., Russia and the European Union are set to start afresh.
St. George Cathedral near Prizren was burned and vandalized
While ethnic Albanians see their independence movement on the verge of success, Serbia turned to its Russian ally to veto U.N. adoption of any independence plan.
Meanwhile, the report on Kosovo violence looks at 12 municipalities, all of which had sizable Serbian Christian populations as recently as 1999. Today, the tiny Serb remnants are composed mainly of elderly and infirm simply incapable of moving.
Still, the carnage continues, right under the noses of U.N. KFOR authorities.
In Cernica, 45 Serb homes have been destroyed since the war ended in 1999. Since the middle of 2003, 12 Serbs have been killed, with no one being charged for the crimes.
Often, says the report, acts of violence against Serbs result in the arrest or detention of the victims. For instance, on Aug. 5, 2001, a hand grenade was thrown at the house of Vladimir Savic, records the diary of a Cernica Serb who himself was later killed by Albanians. Initially, Savic was reported killed in the blast. The grenade exploded just two meters from the main door and seriously wounded Savic and his wife, Stanica.
But when KFOR personnel arrived at the scene, they refused to provide the victims with first aid. Instead, they attempted to arrest their son, Miomor, who had been in the house with his wife and two children at the time of the explosion.
"Since the soldiers refused to help the wounded, their son carried them to his car and drove them without escort to the Greek military base in Bartes, where he was refused any help as well," says the report. "Not knowing what to do, he proceeded to the American base Bondstil."
The base personnel refused initially to admit the civilians. But, given the grave condition of the wounded, they admitted them to the hospital. After three days of medical treatment, they were transferred to Kosovoska Mitrovica.
At the ruins of Holy Archangels Monastery near Prizren, an Albanian mob left their messages: "Death to Serbs" and "Down with UNMIK" – the U.N. police who offered minimal resistance for the attackers. German U.N. forces, meanwhile, watched the monastery destroyed without taking action
"Both victims have been mutilated for life and are invalids today," says the report. "The perpetrator has never been found."
Similar horror stories are recounted in the towns of Novo Brdo, Devet Jugovica, Pristina, Letnica, Urosevac, Kosovo Polje, Vitina and Banjska.
U.N. forces are also charged with a kind of ethnic profiling that directly aided the cause of Albanian ethnic cleansing. U.N. authorities overseeing the ethnic and religious balance in towns frequently identified Serbian Christian homes and Albanian Muslim homes. Sometimes yellow crosses were placed on the Christian homes – which helped identify targets for the persecutors, according to the Kosovo genocide report.
"On the White House lawn on 7 May 2007, while welcoming British Queen Elizabeth, George W. Bush stated that both their countries were 'defending liberty against terror … while resisting those who murder the innocent to advance a hateful ideology,'" concludes the report. "Is it possible in this information age of high technology, where the media daily bombards us with news and information, that these two leaders do not know what has really taken place in Kosovo? Can it be possible that they do not know that their troops were aiding and abetting terrorists in Kosovo and stood by as whole communities were wiped out?"

Shiite gunmen clash at Karbala festival
By ROBERT H. REID, Associated Press Writer
Tue Aug 28, 6:10 PM ET
BAGHDAD - Fighting erupted Tuesday between rival Shiite militias in Karbala during a religious festival, claiming 51 lives and forcing officials to abort the celebrations and order up to 1 million Shiite pilgrims to leave the southern city.
Security officials said Mahdi Army gunmen loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr fired on guards around two shrines protected by the Badr Brigade, the armed wing of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council.
Residents of Karbala contacted by telephone said snipers were firing on Iraqi security forces from rooftops. Explosions and the rattle of automatic weapons fire could be heard during telephone calls to reporters in the city 50 miles south of Baghdad.
In addition to the deaths, security officials said at least 247 people were wounded, including women and children.
The clashes appeared to be part of a power struggle among Shiite groups in the sect's southern Iraqi heartland, which includes the bulk of the country's vast oil wealth.
Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf said entrances and exits to Karbala "have been secured and more forces are on the way from other provinces." Officials said buses were sent to evacuate pilgrims from the city, which includes some of the world's most sacred Shiite shrines.
Gunfights also broke out Tuesday between Mahdi militiamen and followers of the Supreme Council in at least two Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad and in Kut, about 100 miles southeast of the capital, police said.
Extra police took up positions in the center of another Shiite city, Diwaniyah, after gunmen fired on a mosque associated with the Supreme Council, police said. A curfew was clamped on the Shiite city of Najaf after a mortar round exploded on a major square, causing no casualties, officials said.
The trouble started in Karbala late Monday as tens of thousands of Shiites were streaming into the city for the Shabaniyah festival marking the birth of Mohammed al-Mahdi, the 12th and last Shiite imam who disappeared in the 9th century. Devout Shiites believe he will return to Earth to restore peace and harmony.
Scuffles broke out between police and pilgrims as the crowd tried to push through the security checkpoints near the Imam al-Hussein mosque, the focal point of the celebrations. At least five people were killed, police said.
Early Tuesday, crowds of angry pilgrims chanting religious slogans surged through the streets, attacking police and mosque guards, witnesses said. Two ambulances were set ablaze, sending a huge column of black smoke over the city.
Gunmen appeared, firing automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars at security forces and sending panicked pilgrims fleeing the area, police and witnesses said.
A member of the city council said the center of town was in chaos, with pilgrims running in all directions to escape the gunfire.
"We don't know what's going on," said the councilman, who wouldn't allow use of his name for security reasons. "All we know is the huge numbers of pilgrims were too much for the checkpoints to handle and now there is shooting."
Some rounds struck fuel tanks on the roofs of three small hotels, setting them ablaze, police said.
With the situation spiraling out of control, police ordered pilgrims out of the center of the city, effectively canceling the celebrations which were to reach their climax Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
"The area where they (the pilgrims) were gathering has been evacuated in order to control those (criminals)," said Khalaf, the Interior Ministry spokesman. He said the gunmen were gathering in three areas in the old town and security forces were chasing them.
In Baghdad, a senior government security official blamed the fighting on al-Sadr's followers, saying they provoked the confrontations Monday night and were responsible for the shooting Tuesday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid enflaming the situation.
But a spokesman for al-Sadr, Ahmed al-Shaibani, denied that the Mahdi Army was involved in the Karbala fighting. Al-Sadr called for an independent inquiry into the clashes and urged his supporters to cooperate with the authorities "to calm the situation down," al-Shaibani said.
Tensions have been rising in southern Iraq as rival Shiite groups maneuver for power, especially in the oil-rich area around Basra, Iraq's second-largest city.
Concern over Basra is mounting as British forces prepare to evacuate the last of their forces from the city and redeploy to the airport 12 miles to the north.
On Tuesday, Hakim al-Miyahi, head of the security committee of the Basra municipal council, told The Associated Press that Iraqi forces were incapable of maintaining order in the city once the British leave and that the Baghdad government should send reinforcements.
"Some disorder will occur in the absence of British troops in Basra," he said. "It will take at least two army divisions to fill the gap that will be created by British troop withdrawal."
Elsewhere, hundreds of U.S. and Iraqi forces backed by helicopters and jet fighters killed 33 Sunni insurgents who were holding back the water supply to the Shiite town of Khalis, about 50 miles north of Baghdad, the U.S. command said.
The assault began before dawn Monday when a joint force was landed by helicopter in the village of Gubbiya, 10 miles east of Khalis. The assault force killed 13 fighters and attack aircraft killed 20 others, the military said. The area is known to be controlled by al-Qaida in Iraq.
Also Tuesday, a roadside bomb exploded in northern Khalis, killing four Iraqi soldiers, the Iraqi army said.
In Fallujah, 40 miles west of Baghdad, mourners buried 11 victims of a mosque suicide bombing Monday. Ten people were wounded in the attack, which police said targeted an anti-al-Qaida Sunni sheik.

American woman and her Pakistan-American husband killed in Islamabad
Associated Press - August 30, 2007 8:23 AM ET
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - The minister of a Christian church in Pakistan and his American-born wife have been shot to death.
The suspect is identified as a fellow Christian who police say did it as an "honor" killing, believing the pastor had been having an affair with the man's wife.
The victims are identified as Kathleen Khan and her husband Arif Khan, who had U.S. and Pakistani citizenship.
Police in Islamabad say the Khans were found last night in their home.
A spokesman says the Reverend Kahn was pastor of a small church in nearby Rawalpindi.
Christians are a tiny minority in predominantly Muslim Pakistan. Killings in the name of restoring a family's perceived honor are not uncommon.

Ex-MLA urinates on lady & minister
OUR CORRESPONDENT
Malda, Aug. 27: A former CPM legislator grabbed a lady army officer on Darjeeling Mail last night and apparently urinated on her.
A couple of hours before, a sloshed Prakash Minj allegedly took a leak on civil defence minister Srikumar Mukherjee, who was also in the AC II-tier coach.
The minister called police, but did not file a complaint. Major Minta P. Devgan did.
The four-time MLA from Phansidewa was pulled out of the train at Malda station.
Amal Sinha, a contractor accompanying him, was also arrested. But they were released on bail later.
Major Devgan and her husband, Colonel Pankaj Devgan, who were travelling together, are both posted in Calcutta. In the complaint they filed with Government Railway Police in Malda, Minj was accused of “outraging her modesty”.
Mukherjee saw Minj grappling with the woman. His security guard said he saw him have a pee while holding her.
“It was nearly 11pm when I found a drunk man sitting on my berth. He identified himself as a CPM MLA,” Mukherjee said.
The guard, Mohammad Sofi, who was called to escort Minj back to his berth, said he urinated in the minister’s coupe.
A while later, Mukherjee heard a woman shouting for help. He saw the former MLA with his arms around a woman in blue jeans and white T-shirt. “I could see her struggling and rushed to pull him away,” said the CPI leader.
Col Devgan jumped from his berth to the rescue of his wife. Although the entire compartment was awake in minutes, it took half an hour to subdue Minj. By that time, the train had pulled into Malda station and the minister asked his guard to call the police.
Sofi said Minj was hurling abuses at the minister. “The man said the minister was from a minor constituent of the Left Front while he belonged to the ruling party,” Sofi said.
Swapan Dasgupta, the inspector in charge of the Government Railway Police at Malda, confirmed that Minj was drunk.
In the railway police lock-up this morning, Minj and Sinha were seen polishing off a plate of rice and curry.
The party dropped Minj as an MLA candidate last year. He declined comment.
Sinha said: “I consumed alcohol and went to sleep. I don’t remember anything untoward happening on the train.”

Torture in church school: Nuns nabbed
By Debasis Tripathy
Best example of torture and harassment of students inside the white walls of Christian church has come out to picture. Two nuns (sisters) are arrested for torturing and keeping homosexual affairs with students at Baripada.
According to police records, two minor girls namely Anjana Behera of village Titia and Sarojini Murmu of village Nachhipur under Khunta police station took admission in the “Bijoy Sadan”, missionary chhatri nivas”, a school run by Christian missionaries. It functions in the premises of the local Baptist church at village Baghamara. After their admissions they were allegedly compelled to worship Jesus Christ and to chant Bible continuously from 5 AM to 11.30 AM. As they were failing to do this due to sickness, tortured a lot both physically and mentally. In order to save life, both of them flew from the school and these heinous acts of missionaries came to light. Protests made by the local Hindu social organisation to arrest the culprits.
The two victims in the local police station on July 27, 2007 lodged F.I.R. S.Saswati the in-charge district collector of Mayurbhanj visited the spot along with the investigating cops. On July 28, 2007, two nuns namely sister Marry (50) and sister Prema (60) were arrested and forwarded to the court of S.D.J.M, Baripada. Latter as the court rejected their bail applications, they are remanded to judicial custody.
Shri Ranjan Mishra, a local social activist told that, “Inside the church school, many heinous activities are going on. Students are forced to have sex with attendants and teachers. As most of the students belong from poor vanvasi community, their torture has no limit. We have informed the district administration about this, and if no actions taken, we will not sit silently,” he warned.
On the other-hand, the church authorities have denied to comment more on the issue, expect the word “Truth will prevail”.

Missionary arrested for converting 40 Hindu families to Christianity
August 27, 2007
Mumbai (Maharashtra): By offering false promises of monetary help, foreign jobs, taking care of children etc., Fr. Edward converted 40 gullible Hindu families; but vigilant members of Bajarang Dal handed him over to the police. He was booked under Section 295-A and 508 for deceit and bribery by the police. He will be presented in Andheri Court for hearing.
All the converted families were poor and hailed from Bhyandar, Jogeshwari and Andheri areas. Taking advantage of their poverty, Fr. Edward asked them to assemble at Vidyavikas School in Andheri where mass is conducted on every Sunday. From there, they were taken to Juhu Beach to participate in program of conversion and only after which they were to be offered certain facilities.
Once there, the Father asked them to take a dip in the sea so as to purify them. Later, he started making statements like ‘Your God is a devil. Only Jesus is the true Lord.’ The Bajarang Dal activists were keeping an eye on the moves of the missionary and after his misguiding people in this manner, S/Shri. Vitthal Kamat, Anil Bhise and Harish Nevarekar, the members of Bajarang Dal caught hold of the Father, took him to Santa Cruz police station and lodged a complaint. After due enquiry, police filed a case against the missionary and kept him in custody at D. N. Nagar police station.

(Congratulation of Bajarang Dal activist for teaching a lesson to missionary for converting Hindu families! – Editor)

Indian citizenship refused to 'Hindu' Iranian by HC

Showing no sympathy to an Iranian seeking refuge in India, the Bombay High Court turned down his bail plea on Monday. Mohammed Ali Raihanny, who had changed his name to Krishna Raihany after converting to Hinduism in India, wanted to become an Indian citizen. He had moved HC seeking a conditional release on bail to complete documentation for asylum in India.
On two occasions earlier, the court had rejected his application for Indian citizenship as investigation reports of the central agency pointed to his involvement in hawala transactions and visits to Hindu places of worship.
When asked to report his whereabouts to authorities, he had allegedly changed addresses without informing them. "He has six different addresses," said additional public prosecutor Aruna Kamat-Pai. His trips to Pakistan via Iran also brought his intentions under scanner.
Raihany had filed an application for bail stating that he needed to furnish documents to the United Nations Commissioner for Refugees, which he kept at his residence.
Since religious conversion is barred by Iranian law, Raihany also pled that he feared capital punishment awaited him if he was sent back to Iran, as he had converted to Hinduism.

Prophet warns Kufuor against false prophets
Posted on: 28-Aug-2007 Previous Page
The leader of Nyame Nti Prayer and Herbal Healing Camp, Prophet Job Kofi Anim, says the increasing spate of false prophets could pose great danger for Ghana if the nation does not take steps to stop that situation.
Speaking to pressmen at his prayer camp at Gomoa Dominase on Monday, Prophet Anim said, God has warned him through a vision to caution President John Agyekum Kufuor and Ghanaians to be more prayerful as a way of waging war against false prophets in Ghana, lest there is danger awaiting the country in its forward march to progress.
According to him, God will soon pour his anger on Ghana if the trend continues as it is today, hence the need for President Kufuor to put in place effective measures to halt the activities of false prophets.
He cautioned the government to stand firm and institute laws that would hold men of God in check in their day-to-day activities to help eliminate and expose false prophets and prophetesses in the country.
Prophet Kofi Anim admitted that though it would not be easy for President Kufuor to do that, he urged the President not to hesitate in taking such an action, since the danger awaiting the country from his inaction is very terrible.
He also urged Ghanaians to change their attitudes towards seeking prophetic revelations all the time and look to God for direction.
Prophet Anim expressed the view that many false prophets are now in the country looking for easy ways to amass wealth instead of preaching God's word to the listening public, hence the need for the citizenry to be careful not to fall victims to those false prophets.
He attributed the increasing rate of crime and murder to some activities of false prophets, which he said, have provoked God's anger, which is threatening to split the nation into pieces if effective measures are not put in place to check the trend.
Prophet Kofi Anim stressed that the danger awaiting the country, if not forestalled, could have some negative impact on the 2008 general elections.
He then called on heads of churches to come together as one entity to fight the activities of false prophets, who are damaging the image of the true men of God.
He touched on the indiscipline that has taken root among the youth, and called on the youth to work hard to promote the image of Ghana.

China battles to block bad news
Boss admits to killing 'slave'
Beijing - Hundreds of mentally handicapped people have been rescued from slavery in Chinese brickyards and other workplaces, officials said on Monday as they announced the latest findings of a labour abuse crackdown.
At least 1 340 people, including 367 who are mentally handicapped, have been taken from brick kilns, mines and other forced labour situations since a slavery scandal in June, Labour and Social Security Deputy Minister Sun Baoshu said.
The June scandal centred on brickyards and shocked the nation. Previous government figures had put the number of slaves rescued from the kilns at 570 and there were few earlier references to widespread use of handicapped workers.
The crackdown has also now resulted in 147 arrests, according to Sun, whose comments were posted on a website run by China's State Council, or cabinet.
The brick-kiln scandal
Sixty people, including a police officer and social worker, have already been convicted for their involvement in the slavery scandal, according to previous reports carried in the state-run press.
In the most severe penalty, one man was last month (July) sentenced to death after being portrayed in the media as one of the main villains at a notorious brick kiln.
China also announced last month (July) that 95 members of the ruling Communist Party had been punished, but most just escaped with warnings.
The brick-kiln scandal surfaced in June after about 400 distraught parents posted a plea on the internet about their children who had been sold into slavery in northern China's Shanxi province and neighbouring Henan.
They made their case public after police and local authorities refused to help find their children. Authorities only took action after the internet postings caused widespread anger among ordinary Chinese.
The crackdown has now targeted workplaces employing 12.67 million workers, said Sun, who also heads the joint investigation group involving his ministry, the Ministry of Public Security and the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.
The probe found that 67 000, or nearly one quarter of the workplaces inspected nationwide, were operating without licenses.

Hindu family camp in Minneapolis
Sunday, 08.26.2007, 11:22pm (GMT-7)
MINNEAPOLIS: The Hindu Society of Minnesota and Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh held their first annual three-day Hindu Family Camp from August 9 at the new Hindu Mandir in Maple Grove, Minneapolis.
"The new Mandir was a perfect place to hold such an event as it has lots of classrooms and a big auditorium to fit all the campers", says Nayana Ramakrishnan, president of the Hindu Mandir. This camp was to teach children and parents that Hinduism is not a religion, but a way of life and in addition values such as truth, nonviolence, love, and self discipline which are the cornerstones of Hinduism.
The camp was attended by 29 children between the age groups of 6-12 years and 25 parents. The parent and children duos came together this year to learn about Hinduism through mythological stories, games, shlokas, crafts and team work, regardless of different gods, languages and traditions. Shashi Sane, chairperson on the trustee executive council, said, "We are very happy that we have been able to start these camps again.
The youth camps first started in 1981 and continued till 2003. During the last three years the temple has been going through several challenging situations and it was virtually impossible to organize this camp. We are also planning to venture into interfaith education based on values in the school systems in the community." The campers were immersed in active learning focused on preserving the Sanskirt and Hindu culture. Each day consisted of several different activities.
The day started with a traditional Indian breakfast followed by a quick refreshing exercise with Aparna Garg. Aparna Garg, a volunteer instructor says "It is quite challenging growing up as a Hindu in America, but with activities like shakhas and camps, Hindu kids find good support groups and gain the confidence and knowledge needed to maintain our culture."
Kids were made to revise the shlokas they learned the day before and were taught some new shlokas of Lord Ganesha and Maa Saraswati. Other activities in the morning session included: outdoor games, learning bhajans such as Raghupati raghav rajaram and Hum honge kamyab. As always the day was complimented by a delicious Indian lunch.
The afternoon sessions included Surya Namaskar, worksheets on values such as truthfulness, purity and friendship. Later in the afternoon, the campers painted Ganesha deities which were handmade by them the day before, along with a new activity of making Deepawali cards.
There was also a slide show on Ramayan that kids could experience and understand the values underline Hinduism. In parallel there was a separate session for parents to discuss how to implant Hindu values in their children. Anita Debade says "It is very hard to teach our culture at home. This camp provides us with an excellent opportunity for our kids to learn and experiences Hinduism." The day ended with a snack and an indoor game of Ravan and Ram. "Each camper at the end of the four-day camp contributes a skit, play or dance illustrated with the knowledge they learnt from the camp" mentions Sejal Dutt, one of the campers.
In addition each camper was also given a T-shirt and workbook to bring home to remember their camping experience.

NEW DELHI - A hostile neighbourhood combined with a lack of domestic political will and some sloppy policing have made India a soft target for Muslim militants, experts say, after bombs killed 40 people in the south.
The US government’s National Counterterrorism Center says India was second only to Iraq in terms of terrorist incidents and deaths between January 2004 and March this year, with 3,674 people killed, more than hotspots like Afghanistan and Colombia.
A daily diet of violence in Kashmir and attacks by small bands of Maoist rebels in the countryside seldom make national headlines, but high-profile bomb attacks on India’s cities blamed on Islamist militants now take place more often.
“As a nation we are impotent when it comes to tackling terror,” the Times of India said. “After every attack, our police and politicians make the same old noises but nothing happens.”
The latest attack, in the southern city and emerging IT centre of Hyderabad, was swiftly blamed on Islamist militant groups based in Bangladesh or Pakistan, using Indian Muslims to carry out their work.
It was an explanation rejected by both neighbours, but one diplomats say has a ring of truth.
Chief suspect is Shahid Bilal of the Harkat-ul Jihad Islami (HuJI), a Bangladeshi group originally set up during the Afghan jihad against Soviet occupation, who was also blamed for organising another bombing in Hyderabad in May.
“The clever money is on him,” said one Western diplomat. ”It is a very reasonable working hypothesis.”
Pakistan’s Lashkar-e-Taiba works hand-in-glove with HuJI, with a network of militants commuting between the two countries and using Bangladesh’s long, porous border to enter India, security experts say.
“A huge problem the Indians face is that they don’t have a functional relationship with their near neighbours... with the people who can help them,” said the diplomat.
Harder than it looks
Rivals India and Pakistan set up a joint mechanism to share information on terrorism as part of their peace process last year but that body has held just one, unproductive meeting.
India’s police also came in for criticism this week. Each time a bomb goes off, police round up suspects and make a few arrests, but seldom seem to get to the perpetrators.
Analysts say the police are massively understaffed and under-resourced given the scale of the challenge they face, with vast swathes of the rural hinterland virtually unpoliced. The criminal justice system is overwhelmed and outdated.
There is also a lack of coordination between police in rival states and with the centre, no central database of militant suspects and little time for the kind of meticulous, post-attack hunt for clues undertaken elsewhere.
But Ajai Sahni of New Delhi’s Institute for Conflict Management says the critics sometimes overlook how tough a task India faces when the only people who know exactly what is being planned may never set foot in the country.
Foot soldiers in India are given small, specific tasks without necessarily knowing the people they are dealing with, or the grand plot.
“So if you catch any of these people, it doesn’t take you very far,” Sahni said.
India’s Home Minister Shivraj Patil defended his intelligence agencies from accusations they failed to act on information that an attack on Hyderabad was being planned, but in the process virtually admitted their impotence.
“Our country is so big, things are happening in such a manner that even if we have the information that something is likely to happen we do not know when and where it is likely to happen.”
Politics of appeasement?
But critics say a lack of political will or coherent political direction to fight militancy in India hardly helps.
Instead of standing together, Patil and opposition leader Lal Krishna Advani squabbled this week over the government’s 2004 decision to repeal a controversial anti-terrorism law.
The government says the law was misused to harass Muslims under the previous, Hindu nationalist-led government. The opposition says the repeal was an act of appeasement meant to cynically canvas Muslim votes.
“We need to have a consensus approach,” said security expert C. Uday Bhaskar, adding that India, like many democracies, needed to balance human rights and security needs, while also making sure laws were not misused.
Politicians, experts say, do need to acknowledge that India’s 140-million-strong Muslim population is beginning to provide recruits for militant groups, especially after communal riots in Gujarat in 2002 in which around 2,500 people died.
That uncomfortable fact, they say, is sometimes skirted over by politicians keen on attracting Muslim support.
Yet, if the Indian state risks being overwhelmed by the scale of the problem it faces, there are perhaps a couple of reasons for cautious optimism.
Militants’ attacks in recent years have failed in what most presume is their aim -- to destabilise India by fomenting violence between Hindus and Muslims, and to destroy the peace process with Pakistan.
They have also failed, at least since a 2001 attack on India’s parliament, to strike at high security targets.

Iran probes ‘anti-Shia sermon’ in Mecca
TEHRAN: Iran is probing complaints that a prayer leader in the city of Mecca verbally attacked Shiite Muslims amid efforts by Tehran and Riyadh to improve their occasionally strained relations.
The hardline Jomhouri Islami newspaper on Tuesday claimed that television broadcasts of last Friday’s prayer sermon in Mecca were cut short after the prayer leader implied that Shiites had “nothing to do with Islam”.
Jomhouri Eslami reported that prayer leader Sheikh Saleh Al-Taleb had said in Mecca on Friday that “one of the non-Arab nations is provoking a sectarian crisis,” in a reference to Shiite Iran. According to the allegations, also repeated on Iranian state television, he added, “The role played by this group has nothing to do with the prophet,” in reference to Shiite Islam.
There was no confirmation from Saudi Arabia concerning the text of the sermon.
“I did not actually listen to actual words, but our embassy in Riyadh is pursuing the matter,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said.
“There were some speeches regarding the (Shiite) imams, our embassy has discussed it with the officials there. We hope that the sanctity of the different Islamic sects is preserved and we all follow a unified path.”
The head of Iran’s organisation for hajj has also protested to the authorities in Riyadh that Saudi security forces were mistreating Iranian pilgrims visiting Mecca. afp

Fresh violence claims eight civilians in Thailand's deep South
Posted : Tue, 28 Aug 2007 07:33:04 GMT
Pattani, Thailand - Attacks on state schools and Thai-Buddhist communities by suspected separatist have claimed eight civilians lives in two days in Thailand's tortured deep South, provincial officials said Tuesday. The fresh wave of violence coincided with the launch Tuesday of a 104-page report by the New York-based Human Rights Watch which roundly blasts the region's Muslim insurgency for targetting civilians in its political struggle.
Two public school teachers were gunned down on Monday in Pattani, 720 kilometres south of Bangkok, and six other Thai-Buddhists slain Monday and early Tuesday.
"The insurgents have shifted their tactics from beheading villagers to targetting public school teachers," said Pattani Governor Panu Uthairat. Altogether 69 teachers have been killed in Thailand's southern conflict over the past three years and eight months.
Female teacher Kesine Timthep, 42, was shot dead Monday in front of her pupils by two gunmen as she was about enter the Sasanasuksa School in Sai Buri, Pattani. A male teacher was also gunned down Monday in Yalang, also in Pattani province.
Arsonists set fire to at least five state schools in the province Monday night, forcing ten schools to shut their doors to pupils on Tuesday.
Prapaijit Noonlaksert, 44, a female rubber tapper, was killed in an ambush early Tuesday as she entered a plantation with four other Thai-Buddhists workers, police said.
"The recent wave of attacks may be in revenge for all the suspects authorities have arrested in recent weeks," said Panu. Thai authorities have rounded up hundreds of suspected insurgents in the past three months, keeping many of them in detention under powers allowed by an emergency decree enacted in the region.
Some 2,500 people have fallen victim to an escalating separatist movement in Thailand's three southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, since January, 2004, when the conflict took a militant turn for the worse.
The predominantly Muslim region has been the scene of a long simmering separatist struggle for more than six decades that previously targetted Thai security personnel and public property but has now adopted terrorist tactics aimed at civilians.
The New York-based Human Rights Watch on Tuesday launched a 104-page report on the conflict that sharply criticized the separatists for their increasingly brutal attacks on civilians.
"After decades of low-intensity insurgency, Thailand's southern region is becoming the scene of a brutal armed conflict," said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. "Separatist militants are intentionally targeting both Buddhist and Muslim civilians in shootings, bombings and machete attacks."
The report identifies the Pejuang Kemerdekaan Patani, or Patani Freedom Fighters, in the loose network of National Revolution Front-Coordinate as the backbone of the new generation of Muslim separatist militants.
Of the 2,463 people killed in attacks during the past 40 months, some 89 per cent or 2,196 victims were civilians, it said. At least 29 of the victims had been beheaded.
"Violence against civilians is being used by separatist militants to scare Buddhist Thais away from these provinces, keep ethnic Malay Muslims under control, and discredit the Thai authorities," said Adams. "But it is illegal and morally indefensible to deliberately target civilians in any circumstances."

Al Qaida clerics distributing revised editions
of Koran
ABU DHABI — Qatar has banned the import and distribution of unauthorized Korans.
Officials said the Islamic Affairs Ministry has ordered mosques and clerics to use only Korans and other Islamic text approved by the government, Middle East Newsline reported. They said Al Qaida-aligned clerics have employed Korans revised to promote the doctrine of Islamic war against the West.
"This is one of several measures by the ministry to ensure that no copies of the Koran that contains mistakes would be circulated in the country," Mohammed Bin Hamad Ajlan Al Kuwari, director of inspections at the ministry, said.
Officials acknowledged that Korans revised by Al Qaida-aligned clerics have been distributed in Qatar. They said some of chapters in the Islamic text were removed.
The Qatari daily Al Sharq reported that an unidentified Qatari national has financed the publication and distribution of the revised Korans. The newspaper quoted Qatari sources as saying that many such Korans had been sent to the Gulf emirate.
Officials, who cited similar initiatives from other Gulf Cooperation Council states, said the Islamic Affairs Ministry has warned mosques and clerics not to accept donations of Korans without official permission. They said the ministry has established a panel to examine Korans to ensure that they had not been revised.
Al Kuwari said Qatar would ban the import of Korans unless they had been examined and approved by his ministry. He said Doha has already blocked shipments of Korans from unidentified countries.

MP stuns all, is now No 1 in growth
Rajeev Ranjan Roy | New Delhi
State shakes off BIMARU tag with GSDP at 24%, followed by Gujarat at 12%
Madhya Pradesh, unlike its other counterparts, has got rid of the tag of BIMARU State with the economy on the first track of growth. The State tops the Planning Commission's list of best performers in terms of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) by registering a growth rate of 23.50 per cent at the constant prices. Its nearest rival is Chhattisgarh with 12.30 per cent growth rate, followed by Gujarat with 12.17 per cent GSDP for 2006-07.
Not a long time back, MP was dubbed as one of the country's BIMARU States, along with Bihar, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh where the GSDP growth rate at the constant prices has been pegged at 4.72, 7.96 and 6.07 per cent respectively. The other two States with the two-digit growth rate are Uttaranchal 10.28 per cent and Andaman & Nicobar Islands where the GSDP is growing at the rate of 10.78 per cent. Except A&N Islands, all these States have been under the BJP's rule for quite a few years.
The country's Capital, Delhi, is growing at the rate of 9.18 per cent, while the Planning Commission puts the growth rate in West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Kerala at 8.13, 8.02, 8.05, 4.93, and 8.01 per cent, respectively. The strife-torn Assam is registering a GDP growth rate at 5.94 per cent, while Himachal Pradesh tops the list among smaller States by recording 9.27 per cent growth rate.
The GSDP growth rate in MP has substantially been increasing since 2000-01 onwards. From Rs 7,371,538 lakh in 2001-02, the total GSDP went up to Rs 10,305,674 lakh in 2004-05, and surged to Rs 11,217,742 lakh in 2005-06. The State has registered the growth rate, despite the fall in agriculture contribution to the State's GDP from 37.09 per cent in 1993-94 to 26.25 per cent in 2005-06.
As per the revised estimates of annual income for 2006-07 by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), the annual growth rate of the country measured in terms of GDP at factor cost at constant (1999-2000) price is 9.4 per cent for the year.
Among the major southern States, Tamil Nadu is registering the growth rate of 7.38 per cent, and Karnataka 7.90 per cent, while Maharashtra's GSDP rate has been pegged at 9.20 per cent, which is more than the national growth target of 9 per cent yearly during the 11th Plan. The Centre's Approach Paper to the 11th Plan aims at putting the economy on a sustainable growth trajectory with the growth rate of approximately 10 per cent by the end of the current Plan.
"The growth rate of GSDP of many States like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other smaller States looks poised to improve in days to come, as the Centre aims at ensuring faster growth in all productive sectors -- agriculture, industry and services -- with suitable interventions in policy. It will entirely be a different situation when the country enters into 12th Five-Year Plan," a Government official claimed.

MP stuns all, is now No 1 in growth

Boy shown beheading Pakistani soldier in video

27 August 2007
DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan - Pro-Taleban militants have released a video of an apparently teenage boy beheading one of 16 Pakistani soldiers kidnapped in a restive tribal area bordering Afghanistan.
The gruesome recording, a copy of which was obtained by AFP, will likely put further pressure on embattled US ally President Pervez Musharraf to crack down on Islamist violence in the frontier region.
The 35-minute video entitled ‘Revenge’ first shows the 16 soldiers, all of them in uniform, who were taken hostage on August 9 in the South Waziristan tribal district.
Four teenage boys with Kalashnikov assault rifles, daggers and headbands with jihadi slogans are then shown along with one of the soldiers kneeling in front of them.
One boy cuts off the soldier’s head using a knife and holds it up for the camera. The soldier’s body was recovered on August 14 from a nearby town.
The video shows the victim saying just before his death that ‘security forces should not fight against the Taleban’.
The Pakistani military strongly condemned the video, saying it had not seen the recording but was aware of its existence.
‘It proves that they are terrorists. It is an act contrary to tribal customs and is also a cowardly act to kill an unarmed human being,’ chief military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad said.
Negotiations are still underway to free the remaining soldiers as well as a Pakistani military officer and three other officials who were kidnapped in South Waziristan on Friday.
Pakistan has been hit by a wave of Islamist bloodshed since last month’s siege of the extremist Red Mosque in the capital in which more than 100 people died, most of them militants.

Storm in a tea cup
Kuldip Nayar writes from New Delhi
I wish the Left had made national development, not the Indo-US nuclear deal, an issue for parting ways with the ruling Congress. Probably, the Left felt that it would not be convincing if it were to do so after having dotted i's and crossed t's in more or less all the decisions that Manmohan Singh government took in the past three and a half years. Till now, the Left, particularly the CPI (M), has been having vicarious satisfaction of governing, sorting out names for India's president and appointing the vice-president.
Even today, the Left could have created a rumpus over the increase in the number of poor in the country. It could have taken the government to task on the data revealed by its appointed commission on the Unorganised Sector. The report says that 836 millions, 87 percent of India's population, live on Rs 20 (half a dollar) or less per person per day.
For reasons best known to the Left, it chose the nuclear deal. Politically, it misfired. One, the Left found itself on the side of the BJP. Two, a few hours before the Left rejected the deal, China had threatened that "either the Indo-US nuclear deal will fall or the Manmohan Singh government." Was there any telepathy?
If any country, leave America apart, had made the observation which China did, the Left and its camp followers would have been up in arms. The remark would have been considered interference in India's domestic affairs. Yet, there was not even a whimper in the Left quarters, much less criticism. They felt important by giving repeated statements on how India's sovereignty would be circumscribed if the deal went through. Little did they realise that sovereignty rested with the people in a country. It was from within, not without. How could America or, for that matter, any other country take away, whatever the wording of the deal, our sovereignty?
India became sovereign after untold sacrifices. The nation knows how to defend itself against the different challenges. In their shoddy wrangling, the political parties should not drag in sovereignty, which is something sacred. All American laws, including the Hyde Act, put together cannot enslave us. Nor can Washington's warnings deter us from doing what we want to do. The Left should judge the government on the basis of the steps it takes to implement the prime minister's statement in parliament in July 2005.
We stand by "no-first use," the undertaking given by BJP prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. He even announced a moratorium on nuclear tests. The BJP's turnabout, like that of the Left, is political. It has nothing to do with our sovereignty. The Left's animus against America is understandable, but what is the BJP's problem? The latter initiated the whole thing following the unending talks between BJP foreign minister Jaswant Singh and America's I. Talbot, a top functionary in the Clinton government.
The point of concern is not the deal but the manner in which New Delhi is watering down its independent foreign policy, which had come to be known as non-alignment. We, as a nation, lessen ourselves when the US ambassador in New Delhi warns us not to vote against America on the issue of Iran, and we obediently do so. We, too, do not want Iran to have the bomb, and we should support all steps to stop it from developing one.
But what is disconcerting is the general perception that America is dictating us. In the renewal of the cold war atmosphere, New Delhi has to play a role, the independent one that we played when the world was divided into two hostile blocs. How to win back the confidence of small and weak countries is what New Delhi should be thinking, instead of demolishing the consensus on foreign policy we have been having. I am personally against the entire nuclear programme, starting with the bomb. Both Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru were against making the bomb. I am not sure whether we should have nuclear energy.
Nuclear power houses will be a big hazard. Any leakage, as happened in Europe and Russia, can kill thousands of people. I do not know whether nuclear energy will turn out to be cheaper than the thermal or the hydro one. Billions of dollars need to be invested in nuclear energy. And all this will be in the public sector. We should have concentrated on harnessing water, including the Brahmaputra, with the help of Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. It would have benefited us all economically.
However, the Manmohan Singh government's mind is made up on nuclear energy. In a country like India, where the marginal group consuming less than Rs 15 per person has increased from 290 million to as high as 392 million, nearly 40 percent of population, the priority should have been livelihood, not energy, however important it is for development. The same question arises again: Development for whom?
The political fallout of the nuclear deal is what seems to worry the Congress-led government. Some sort of mechanism has been established to allay the Left's fear. But the confidence between the two has been shaken. The Left also feels that support to the Congress and its policies has eroded its base. This is true. Yet, it looks as if the present crisis over the Indo-US nuclear deal will blow over. The Left is beginning to realise that it would lose heavily if the polls were to take place immediately. Still, as things look today, it is only a matter of time when the distance between the two would become unbridgeable.
A mid-term poll may become unavoidable because even if the government is not pulled down, its credibility would lessen if it is reduced to a minority in the Lok Sabha. The Congress, without majority in the House, can rule as Narasimha Rao did for full five years. The president, who is the Congress nominee, will come in handy. But that does not solve the problem. The minority does not become a majority.
Already moves are afoot to cobble together an alternative. The BJP-headed NDA is willing to extend support to any group that can show how it can reach the magic figure of 273 in the 545-member Lok Sabha. The third combination (United National Progressive Alliance) is all for ousting the Congress-led coalition at the Centre. Again, its problem is that it cannot have a majority.
However uncertain the future scenario, the bottom line is that no political party wants a mid-term poll. The Left has said that it will oppose the government without being a party to the toppling move. There is more heat than substance. When the chips are down, the political crisis may turn out to be storm in a tea cup.

AP twin blasts: Cops clueless
27 Aug 2007, 0306 hrs IST,TNN
HYDERABAD: Twenty-four hours after the deadliest terror attack in the state, the Y S Rajasekhara Reddy government is clueless about the perpetrators of the act and the identity of their local operatives. The only progress made so far is that the material used in the bomb has been identified, one suspect rounded up and seven special police teams formed to track down sleeper cells of international terror operatives.
Barring that, the government went about with its familiar finger pointing at Pakistan and Bangladeshi-based terrorists.
Police sources said on Sunday that 'Neogel-90,' an ammonium nitrate-based emulsifier also known as 'ANFO' (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil), was used in the two bomb blasts at Lumbini Park and Gokul Chaat, and that the same material was found in the unexploded bomb discovered in Dilsukhnagar.
The explosive material was manufactured by Omni Explosives located in Nagpur. While teams have been dispatched to Nagpur for further investigations, it has come to light that Sohail, the owner of Omni Explosives, hails from Malakpet in the city — a clear indication of the penetration of international terror operatives in the form of local support.
At both the blast sites, the remnants of the explosive shells were of a crude nature. "The explosive material was put in a wooden box containing metallic iron balls and linked to an alarm clock, detonators and battery. Thus, these bombs are of a crude make, though activated by a timer device. The Mecca Masjid blasts were cellphone activated and triggered by remote-control mechanism. As a result, we do not have any telltale evidence in the Saturday blasts to work on," an official told TOI.
Meanwhile, Mustafa, said to be a butcher residing in Bibinagar on the outskirts of the city, in Nalgonda district, has been picked up by police for questioning. With the owner of the explosives unit in Nagpur also having Hyderabadi links, the police are hopeful that questioning these two would give them some clues in the case.
In another development, the state on Sunday set up seven special teams to identify ISI activities in the state, as well as weed out sleeper cells of international terror operatives. It has come to light that the operatives have activated sleeper cells not only in Hyderabad, but in neighbouring Nalgonda, Warangal and Mahbubnagar districts as well.
In the meantime, the top police brass as well as intelligence agencies pointed fingers at HuJI operative Shahid Bilal, who was earlier in Bangladesh but is now said to be based in Pakistan.
While HuJI and ISI may be the masterminds of terror activities in India, the police are clueless as to the identity of their local operatives who actually carry out the acts.
Analysts pointed out that the progress made by the cops in the latest case is far slower than the pace at which they had moved in the Mecca Masjid blast case.

42 San Diego sex abuse cases ordered to trial
By Tony Perry, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
August 25, 2007
SAN DIEGO -- A U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge ruled Friday that 42 lawsuits filed by people alleging sexual abuse by Catholic priests here can go to trial, which could goad the Catholic Diocese of San Diego into settling those and other suits.
Andrea Leavitt, lawyer for a group of claimants, called the ruling by Judge Louise De Carl Adler a victory for victims of sexual abuse, many of whom have spent years seeking damage payments from the diocese.
"The victims are very encouraged," Leavitt said. "And they are very grateful that the court has the wisdom to grasp the gamesmanship the victims have been subjected to for years by the diocese."
Adler, in her ruling, said she will decide at a hearing Sept. 6 whether to throw out the diocese's bankruptcy lawsuit.
In February, as the first of the suits was about to go to trial, the San Diego diocese, with 1 million Catholics, became the largest in the nation to seek protection in Bankruptcy Court.
The Bankruptcy Court blocked the suits from going to trial. But Adler has been increasingly skeptical of the diocese's assertions that it could become insolvent if it had to pay damages to the 150-plus claimants. She has also criticized the diocese's financial record-keeping as being designed to mask the diocese's true worth.
Diocese attorneys have offered a $95-million settlement with 150-plus people who have filed claims. But Adler noted in her ruling that this is "far below the historic statewide average" of payments when abuse victims sue in state court.
The judge suggested that the diocese was "forum shopping," hoping that a settlement reached as part of a bankruptcy filing would cost less than one reached in a trial court.
The 42 lawsuits represent 58 claimants. In all, the diocese faces 127 lawsuits.
Diocese lawyers argued that Adler does not have the authority to send the 42 lawsuits back to the Superior Court for trial. Adler said there is a compelling public interest in settling claims involving the sexual abuse of children.
Claimant attorneys have said the diocese filed for bankruptcy to stop the suits from going to trial and spare Bishop Robert Brom from having to testify.
Brom and his lawyer did not return calls Friday.

School headmaster shot and burned in Thailand's restive south
The Associated PressPublished: August 24, 2007
BANGKOK, Thailand: Suspected insurgents fatally shot a school headmaster and then set his body on fire Friday in Thailand's violence-plagued south, police said.
Nong Bunsak, the 50-year-old headmaster of Ban Sano school, was shot while he was driving a car to pick up his wife, who taught at a nearly school in Pattani's Yarang district, said police Sub. Lt. Dutsadee Siltrakul.
Suspected insurgents on motorcycles fired at his vehicle, forcing him to stop and attempt to run away, police said. They then shot him before setting his body aflame.
Drive-by shootings and bombings occur almost daily in Thailand's three southernmost Muslim-majority provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani, where an Islamic insurgency that flared in January 2004 has killed more than 2,400 people.
Teachers, along with other government officials, have been prime targets of insurgent attacks. More than 60 public school teachers have been killed since 2004.
