SILIGURI: Fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 2.64 lakh, believed to be smuggled in from Bangladesh, have been seized from Siliguri and three persons were arrested in this connection.
The assistant Director of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) told reporters that DRI officials on Tuesday chased three youths on the Mahananda river bridge following their suspicious movement and recovered the fake currency notes from their possession.
The quality of printing and paper was enough to make it appear as original at first sight. The notes were smuggled from Bangladesh probably through the border at Phansidewa area, Jana said.
According to DRI officials, an international racket was active to float fake currency notes in the region. A huge amount of fake currency notes were recovered here in Phansidewa area last year which also came from Bangladesh.
The three youths arrested on Tuesday were Shekhbar Ali, Hafiz Ali, residents of a Kaliachawk village in Malda and Malin Roy a local who came to receive the currency notes. Officials believed that Roy was not the end recipient and might be a middle man.
DRI was sharing intelligence with the state and central agencies to unearth the racket, officials added.
