The beat goes ‘om’: Mindful Dog studio adds indie rock to yoga playlist

For some people, “om” just isn’t enough.

So yoga instructor Bill Peregoy decided to kick his meditative playlist up a notch.

Sunday marks the debut of “The Bends: Yoga that Rocks” at Peregoy’s Mindful Dog Yoga studio in Jamaica Plain.

“Yoga enabled me to rock again,” said Peregoy, 45, who owned Pop Narcotic, a Somerville-based independent rock label, in the 1990s.

Athletic injuries began to rob Peregoy of what he loved: standing at live shows. So, he immersed himself in yoga.

“In younger days you get out of work, drink, rock out and have trouble getting to work the next day,” he said. “To me, this is the next phase.”

The rock aficionado said artists such as Belle & Sebastian and Sonic Youth complement the intense Forrest yoga method he teaches that focuses on vigorous sequences and holding poses for extended periods of time.

“I really like things that are dramatic and uplifting, so when you are doing the standing poses you aren’t just standing there,” he said. “It’s pretty vigorous stuff. You get pretty deep into your body.”

Aside from the mind/body benefits of the practice, Peregoy said the class offers students a chance to stretch musically.

“It’s like being at a live show. It affects you in a whole new way,” he said. “You are using something outside yourself to connect inside yourself.”

The class playlist is still in the works, but he plans to build the intensity of the music with the difficulty of the moves.

Peregoy opened Mindful Dog Yoga in April. Most who attend his classes have followed him from his previous teaching engagements, or have discovered the studio through word of mouth.

He hopes this new noontime class will attract students who rock as hard as they work out. Those who are still wearing a wristband or stamp from a concert the night before get a $3 discount on the $15 class fee.

His goal is to create an atmosphere that is “kinda like hanging out in a living room.” Participants are encouraged to stay after class, socialize, listen to music and nosh on vegan snacks.
