A Superior Court judge on Monday granted a motion to continue the trial of a former Rose Hill Free Will Baptist Church preacher accused of secretly videotaping women and children in rest rooms.

HARRIS
Leon Earl Harris, 55, 110 Thad Little Road, Ayden, will be tried July 9 in Pitt County Superior Court. The date was set during a brief morning administrative hearing.

Harris was scheduled for trial Monday, but was granted the new court date after his attorney Myron Hill withdrew from the case.

Harris has retained James Crouch, a Raleigh-based attorney whose firm specializes in cases similar to Harris' case. Crouch indicated in court the case would go forward, sharing plans to file pre-trial motions by June 11.

Harris has maintained his innocence since charges were filed about two years ago. He also has turned down a plea deal brought by the state.

Pitt County Sheriff's Office detectives started investigating Harris, who had been a pastor at the Winterville church for more than 20 years, in July 2005 after Surf City police discovered several videotapes and DVDs in Harris' possession.

Officers noticed Harris because a woman complained he was videotaping her on the beach with a camera attached to a metal detector, police said.

Several images on the videos viewed by Pitt detectives matched areas inside the Winterville church, court documents show. To prepare for the May trial date, detectives and prosecutors reviewed video evidence collected in the case.

Lee Moore, sheriff's office chief of investigations, said an additional count of felonious secret peeping was brought before the grand jury May 7 after prosecutors and detectives viewed a female church member on a tape they had not seen before.

Moore said Harris was not arrested after a true bill of indictment was returned by the jury. The charge, rather, was added by the Pitt County District Attorney's Office, bringing the total number of secret peeping counts against Harris to 48. He also faces four counts second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

Adult women and children as young as 5 can be seen on the rest room cameras, including one camera that was apparently installed on the tank of a toilet, court documents show.

Authorities have indicated the incidents for which Harris is charged date back to 2003.
