Man faces life in jail for desecrating Quran
By Imtiaz Shah, Correspondent

Karachi: A man found guilty of committing blasphemy by desecrating the Quran has been sentenced to life imprisonment, a court official said yesterday.

Mohammad Yousuf, 44, was sentenced to 25 years rigorous imprisonment by the sessions court in the central city of Multan, public prosecutor Mohammad Siddique said yesterday.

"The court verdict was based on witnesses' accounts and evidence against the accused, which was very strong," Siddique said.

"He tore up the Quran and than threw its pages into a nullah [sewage] in his home village of Qutabpur," he said.

Desecrating the Quran is against the law in Pakistan and is punishable by death under Islamic law.

Siddique said Yousuf has the right to appeal against the decision in an upper court.

Lack of evidence

Cases of blasphemy are relatively common in Pakistan but death sentences have never been carried out because convictions have always been turned down by high courts citing lack of evidence. However, there are occasionally instances of enraged mobs attacking and killing people accused of blasphemy, including desecration of the Quran.

Rights groups say people often make accusations of blasphemy against people they hold a grudge against or if they belong to a different faith or religious sect.

The government plans to reform the law, probably after parliamentary elections due either late this year or early 2008.

Law reform

President General Pervez Musharraf tried to reform the law in 2000, months after he took power in a bloodless coup, but had to drop that plan after widespread protests from powerful religious parties.

Gita and Ramayana will be burnt, says Veeramani
NT Bureau
Chennai, Mar 12:

Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) president K Veeramani has warned that the sacred book of the Hindus, the Bhagawad Gita and the Indian epic Ramayana, would be burnt as part of a demonstration to be organised soon.

Participating in the Maniammayar birth anniversary day celebrated by the party's women's wing as Women liberation day, Veeramani said Periyar's stand was that women had all the rights that men enjoyed.

That was why he asked men to do household chores like cooking, instead of women.

'In countries like the USA, both men and women go for work. Cooking is done there by the spouse who comes home first from work. There is no discrimination. Such a thing should blossom here too,' Veermani said and alleged that Ramayana, one of the oldest and well known epics of the world, besmirched women.

The DK leader also said that the Bhagavath Gita and Manusmruthi too denigrated the women folk. Hence, a demonstration would be held soon and these works would be burnt to ashes. The place and time would be announced soon, he said.

New Delhi: Raising the communal pitch just ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the All India Muslim Personal Board (Jadeed) on Thursday criticised the Centre for not banning the entry of Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen in India and announced a reward of Rest 5 laky on Nasreen’s head.

AIMPB (Jadeed) president Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan said the Centre was deliberately hurting sentiments of Muslims by not banning her entry to the country.

Addressing the board's annual meeting at Bareilly, he said the reward announcement will become operational if New Delhi does not restrict her entry into the country.

Noting that Nasreen had made "derogatory references against Prophet Mohammad in her writings," Tauqeer said: "We demand that the government ban her entry into the country. If it is not done, anyone who beheads her will be given a reward of Rs 5 lakh," he said.

The board had earlier elected Maulana Tauseef Raza Khan as its new president.
