NEW DELHI - In a pre-dawn attack on Friday suspected militants killed at least five Hindu road workers and injured four others in Indian-administered Kashmir.


Four militants, believed to belong to Hizbul Mujahideen, barged into houses in Panglar village of Rajouri district, about 190 kilometres north of capital Jammu, local police officials told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

They forced the labourers outside and then opened fire on them.

Two people who managed to escape informed the Indian Army, however the militants escaped before troops could reach the village, defence officials said.

The four injured were shifted to an army hospital.

Kashmir, a disputed region between India and neighbouring Pakistan, has witnessed the deaths of More than 50,000 people have been killed in the conflict over the disputed region of Kashmir with different Islamic rebel groups fighting for Kashmir’s independence from Hindu majority India and others for joining the region with Muslim Pakistan.

New Delhi has accused Islamabad of aiding and abetting Kashmiri militants, a charge Pakistan has denied. Islamabad said it supports the Kashmiris’ legitimate aspirations for freedom.

According to Indian security agencies, the Hizbul Mujahideen (HuM - Movement of the Islamic Holy Warriors), and Lakshar-e-Taiba (LeT - Army of the Pure), are the two main militant groups operating in India-administered Kashmir.

Indian officials said both the insurgent groups are headquartered in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
