Hindu temple planned for northeast Ohio

RICHFIELD, Ohio (AP) - Plans are under way for the construction of a Hindu temple in the Akron and Cleveland area.

The zoning commission in the northeast Ohio city of Richfield is reviewing preliminary plans for the Sree Venkateswara (ven-KHAT-is-swar-ah) Temple of Cleveland.

Dr. Ram Bandi, president of the local Hindu community, says the temple is long overdue. The closet temple with Sree Venkateswara as the presiding deity is in Pittsburgh.

Bandi estimates that about 100 area families worship the deity, also known as the Lord of 7 Hills. The area is home to an estimated 400 Hindu families.

He says most Hindus have altars in their homes, but a temple will serve as a gathering place for music, dance and other cultural activities.
