NE militants working from Bangladesh: Lapang

Shillong, Nov 08: A day after a Deputy Superintendent of Police was killed in a gunbattle with HNLC militants in the state, Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang on Thursday reiterated that the militant outfits of the North East have their bases in Bangladesh and were operating from there.

"It cannot be denied that the militant groups of the North East, be it the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) or any other outfit, have their bases in Bangladesh. We have been asking the Centre to arrange for flushing them out." Lapang told a crowded press conference here.

The DSP of Ri Bhoi district RP Diengdoh and an HNLC militant were killed in an early morning gun battle between security forces and militants in a remote village at Nongpoh, which is the Chief Minister's home constituency.

The Centre has been pressuring Dhaka to demolish the camps of the NE militants, Lapang said. "Unless the government of Bangladesh cooperates, nothing can be done."

Asked whether HNLC was showing signs of resurgence, he said, "the militancy problem has come down, but the police has to remain alert. The recent incidents were a follow-up of constant vigilance."

Before yesterday's encounter, five militants of the HNLC were shot dead by the police in Shillong on October 30.

He appealed to the HNLC cadres to join the mainstream.

Stating that state government had asked the Centre to increase allocation to improve the state's police machinery and to conduct training of the officers outside the state, he underlined the need to raise an all-woman battalion.

A residential complex, equipped with school, health facilities and quarters, for the state's police force were also on the anvil, the Chief Minister said.
