Christians ordered out of Mosul "under threat of death"
Jul 5, 2007, 14:31 GMT
Baghdad - Minority Christians living in Mosul are being threatened with death unless the leave the northern Iraqi city within three days, it was reported Thursday.
An Islamic group calling itself the Islamic Emirate of Mosul had posted notices on the streets threatening to behead any Christian remaining in the city after three days, according to the Eastern Star News Agency, a Swedish-based agency run by Assyrian Christians.
The group, considered close to al-Qaeda, was also threatening to kidnap or kill all Christians - students or employees - at Mosul University if they did not leave the university campus in three days.
The agency claimed that the Islamic Emirate of Mosul had already killed seven Christians in the city in recent days.
Christians are regarded as especially vulnerable in Iraq as, in contrast to other religious communities, they have no militia protection. Tens of thousands have fled the country - most to Syria or to Western countries.
Meanwhile a civilian and an Iraqi soldier were killed and seven people were wounded Thursday in the northern city of Kirkuk when a bomb exploded near a police station.
Also Thursday, two civilians and a policeman were killed in the southern town of Samawa in fighting between radical Shiite militia fighters and security forces, according to Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
