China blocks India
Thursday, July 12, 2007 02:06:00 pm
The Australian Defence Minister inadversantly admitted on Wednesday (July 12) night that the Chinese government is doing everything in its power to keep India out of a vital strategic access in Asia.
The Prime Minister only about a month ago, in the first week of June created a stir in political circles back home, by referring to China as India's greatest neighbour. But the PM's good faith in China is hardly ever reciprocated. Over the last one year, China has gone out of its way not to be India's greatest neighbour, but rather a difficult one.
From making territorial claims over Arunanchal Pradesh, to muscle flexing over Aksai Chin and provoking a dangerous arms race, China has gone all out. The Chinese are now going out of their way to keep India out of vitally important strategic quadrilateral pact with the US, Japan and Australia in the Indian Ocean. In other words, China is dictating who India should make friends with.
That explains why in a bizarre show of diplomacy, the Australian Defence Minister had to tender an apology to China for setting up a joint terror mechanism with India. Dr Brendan Nelson, the Australian Defence Minister said, "The matter is that we do wish to and want to discuss within, the bilateral arrangements. We don't want to do something that's unnecessary which might otherwise cause concern in other countries, particularly China, and they have also reassured the Chinese that Australia is not seeking quadrilateral strategic dialogue on core security and defence issues."
Nelson's statement wasn't an off the cuff one. This month, Australian Prime Minister, John Howard released a new defence strategy paper which says very bluntly that China's recent military build-up, including the development of an anti-satellite system, can create misunderstandings and instability in the region. China has predictably denied everything, but this is something India will have to look at very carefully. The latest Chinese gambit is another example of Beijing going out of its way to under mine New Delhi's influence in its own backyard.
