Judge spares life of sacred bull
16/7/2007
A judge in the high court at Cardiff today spared the life of a condemned sacred bull suffering from TB.
Monks at the Skanda Vale temple in Llanpumsaint, Carmarthen, argued in court that the animal, known as Shambo, was healthy and that to kill him would be a desecration of life, the sanctity of their temple and Hinduism.
The Welsh Assembly and farming unions argued that Shambo should have been slaughtered as the TB measures are in place to protect public and animal health and to prevent the further spread of the disease, a serious problem for British farmers.
But the judge, Mr Justice Hickinbottom, found in favour of Shambo and the Hindu community. He said the Assembly Government had adopted the wrong approach in this case and would now have to reconsider the matter.
More than 20,000 people signed a petition to save Shambo after a notice of intended slaughter had been issued by the Assembly in May.
