Priest Commits Suicide After Abuse Charge
Body Found In Rectory Of Maine Church
POSTED: 6:18 am EDT June 30, 2008
UPDATED: 6:19 am EDT June 30, 2008
DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine -- A Roman Catholic priest committed suicide after he was informed that he would be suspended pending an investigation of his alleged sexual abuse of a minor 29 years ago, the Diocese of Portland said Friday.
The body of the Rev. James Robichaud, 56, was found Friday morning in the rectory of Our Lady of the Snows in Dover-Foxcroft. He learned of the allegation the day before.
Robichaud died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, said Sgt. Gary West of the Dover-Foxcroft police. He said an employee at the rectory found the body in a second-floor bathroom, and it was believed that the shooting took place Thursday evening. No suicide note was found, West said.
The abuse allegation came to the diocese from the Oblates, a religious order of men with whom Robichaud was serving in Massachusetts prior to his return to Maine in 2000.
The abuse was alleged to have occurred around the time Robichaud, an Augusta native, was ordained in 1979 and assigned to St. Jean-Baptiste Parish in Lowell, Mass. He later served as chaplain of Lowell General Hospital and pastor of Notre Dame De Lourdes in Lowell.
"Out of pastoral care for Father Robichaud's family and parishes during this time of shock and grief, further details about the case will be released at a later date," the diocese said in its statement.
The diocese said there is not enough information at this point to substantiate or dismiss the allegation. Bishop Richard Malone asked that prayers be said for all involved.
"This is a tragic end to a story that we may never completely understand. It is simply our mission to bring the healing presence of Jesus to this agonizing situation. May His love work through each of us to find compassion for the woman who made the complaint, Father Robichaud's soul, his family, friends and parish community," Malone said.
Robichaud attended the Oblate College and Seminary in Natick, Mass., Framingham State College in Massachusetts and the Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass., where he received a masters of divinity.
On his return to Maine, he was named administrator of St. Thomas Aquinas in Dover-Foxcroft and St. Francis in Brownville Junction. St. Anne Parish in Dexter was added to his responsibilities in 2005. The three parishes joined in 2007 to become Our Lady of the Snows.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has always been synonymous with temples. It boasts of some of the most popular temple towns - Kancheepuram, Madurai and Tanjavur. Built centuries ago, these temples are a visual treat for lovers of architecture and history.
However, not everyone visits these temples with an intention to appreciate their beauty or to worship. They have now become soft targets for idol thieves. In the last one month, there have been at least three cases of idol thefts, the latest being Thursday, where a wooden elephant was found being smuggled to France.
The exquisitely carved Natarajas, Alwars and Murugans, crafted prior to 12th century have been stolen from these poorly guarded temples and make their way to many foreign countries.
Westerners pay exorbitant amounts for these idols. The idol wing of the crime branch CID, a special branch dedicated to track idol theft cases in the state, has seized 16 antique idols from different parts of the state this year.
Officials from the idol wing say that there are idol thieves active in every district of Tamil Nadu, constantly targeting temples in Tanjavur and Madurai belonging to the Chola period, temples in Kancheepuram and Vellore belonging to the the Pallava period and temples in Tirunelveli belonging to the Pandian period.
"These gangs constantly roam around the districts and target temples which don't have adequate security. When they strike at a temple, they only pick up the expensive idols. In many cases, they kill the security guard at the temple," an idol wing official said.
Once the burglars pick up idols, they hand them over to middlemen. "There are middlemen involved in the smuggling of idols. The burglars hand over the idols to first level middlemen who are mainly located in Karaikudi, Madurai and Chennai. Karaikudi is the main market for stolen idols. The middlemen collect the idols and get in touch with their other contacts. They provide the photograph of the idol to the second-level middlemen to assess the quality and value of the idol. The third-level middlemen later buy them and either send them outside the country or to cities like Mumbai and Delhi," the official added.
These panchaloha idols, the price of which even the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) cannot ascertain, are sold to the first-level middlemen for as less as 10,000 to 15,000. "The first level middlemen sell this off for around Rs 1 lakh and the second level middlemen, for a price between Rs 5-10 lakh for the idol. In the international market, these idols are sold for a price between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1 crore," the official added.
The value of the idol is calculated as per its antiquity, size and weight. "There is a demand in the international market for 12th century idols. So the idol thieves concentrate more on areas like Tanjavur, Tiruvarur, Madurai and Kancheepuram," the official said.
Any transaction of artifacts that are more than 100 years old need permission from the government. “It is very easy to send the antiques out from India. The container services do not evaluate the age of the artifacts sent through them. The consignee records them as new artefact and presents photos of new artifacts. The consignment is then certified as non-antique, The customs officials also rely on this statement,” another official said.

KARACHI: The Jafferia Alliance of Pakistan (JAP) held protests outside different imambargahs and mosques after Jumma prayers against the killings of Shia Muslims in Kurram Agency and Parachinar.
“The government and democratic forces in the country should take immediate notice of the killings of innocent Shia Muslims in Kurram Agency and Parachinar where the Taliban are regularly killing 20 to 30 people every day,” said Senator Allama Abbas Kumeli, the JAP president, while addressing the main protest outside Masjid Shah-e-Najaf, Martin Quarters, Jamshed Town.
“Leaving more than 500,000 Shias at the mercy of the Taliban is a conspiracy against the country.
We will have a worse situation than Afghanistan if the government, the Pakistan Army and political and religious parties fail to stop the Taliban from spreading terrorism in the area.”
Kumeli said that the Taliban have no concern with Islam or its preaching but are working in the interest of America. They are creating a weak image of Pakistan and, he added, spreading a false image of Islam in the world.
“The government should not give a free hand to the Taliban in the name of a peace agreement but should create a balance, and ensure the rights of people according to the constitution of Pakistan,” he demanded.
Allama Furqan Hyder Abidi warned that the ‘Millat-e-Jafferia’ will call a long march to Parachinar if the government fails to stop the Taliban. Maulana Hussain Masoodi, Allama Aftab Jafferi and others also addressed the protest demonstrations.

Assam market bombing 'kills six'
Dozens were hurt in the blast
At least six people have been killed in a bomb blast at a crowded market in the north-eastern Indian state of Assam, police say.
Eighty others were wounded in the explosion at Kumarikata in the west of the state near the border with Bhutan.
Police blamed the attack on separatist rebels belonging to the United Liberation Front of Assam (Ulfa).
They said the bomb was in response to a truce announced by some Ulfa commanders which the group's top leaders oppose.
'Heinous'
"The bombs exploded when there were hundreds of villagers in the market. This is a serious attack and a very heinous one," said Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
The BBC's Subir Bhaumik in Calcutta says a number of the wounded have been taken for treatment to the Assam state capital, Guwahati.
Assam police intelligence chief Khagen Sharmah told the BBC the explosion was a "direct reaction" to the ceasefire declaration by some Ulfa commanders.
"There is no doubt that such a powerful explosion can be done by only one group in Assam and that is the Ulfa," he said.
Ulfa has not said it carried out the bombing or denied it.
The group began an armed rebellion against what it describes as colonial rule by Delhi in 1979. Thousands of people have died in the violence.
An effort to start peace talks between the rebels and the Indian government broke down in 2006.
The rebels are seeking a separate homeland for the Assamese people and demanding the departure of the non-indigenous population, particularly Hindi speakers.
Earlier in June, some Ulfa commanders started secret negotiations with the Assam government and the Indian army, following which they announced a ceasefire.
Top Ulfa leaders say they have fallen into a "government trap".

New Delhi: A day after People's Democratic Party (PDP) pulled out from the Congress-led coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir, Governor N N Vohra on Sunday formally wrote to the state government saying he is willing to revoke the transfer of forestland to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).
Following his letter, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, state Congress president Saif-ud-din Soz and other senior Congress leaders met Vohra, who is also the chairman of SASB.
PDP, however, says it stands by its decision of withdrawing support from the state government.
“I am happy with the decision. We have succeeded in what we wanted to do. We would like to see normalcy back in the state. We have already pulled out of the government,” PDP President Mehbooba Mufti said.
Mebooba added: "Once the government agrees to provide the facilities to the yatris, as was done for so many years, there will be no point of transferring the land."
National Conference president Omar Abdullah, whose party is not in favour of the land transfer, told CNN-IBN that he was pleased with Vohra’s decision but whether they’ll extend support to Congress was still unclear.
“We are happy with the Governor's decision. As of now, we are not providing support to Congress. However, our agenda will be decided in the core committee meeting on Sunday,” he said.
But Congress continues to remain confident of lasting a full term despite the split.
“I believe we will have a breakthrough. I am meeting the Governor, and together we will look for a solution. Government will run its course till the last day,” Soz said.
Meanwhile, the state government has made it clear that it will conduct the Amarnanth yatra instead of the Board.
BJP, however, has objected to the decision stating that J&K government is ill equipped to handle the yatra.
“We are completely against the decision of the transfer of responsibility of the yatra back to the state government, which is not equipped to deal with the arrangements and is the main reason SASB was constituted in 2002,” BJP party in-charge, Kashmir, R P Singh.
Singh added, “The standing of the government is still not clear on whether the yatra is still on. How will the government be able to handle the arrangements?”
Srinagar has been tense since June 23 after dozens were injured during clashes with police. Three people died and more than 200 were injured in protests that lasted six days.
Authorities had decided to transfer nearly 100 acres of forestland in Batal SASB to erect temporary structures for thousands of pilgrims who annually trek to the cave shrine.

Indonesian authorities tear down three churches in Bekasi
by Benteng Reges
Disregarding an agreement reached with Christian religious leaders, Indonesian officials demolish three Protestant churches, which had been previously forced to suspend their Sunday functions. Christians complain about what they view as a “discriminatory act against us.”
Jakarta (AsiaNews) – Indonesian authorities failed to uphold an agreement that guaranteed freedom of worship to three Protestant Churches proceeding instead to tear down the buildings where their communities prayed. The event took place last 14 June in Bekasi Regency, West Java Province, a place characterised by violence and abuses by Muslim fundamentalists against so-called home churches. This time though, Christians were “attacked” by public authorities themselves. Theo Billa, a Catholic activist in touch with the Protestant clergymen from the targeted Churches, talked to AsiaNews about the disquieting episode
Since October 2005 three church buildings (located in Kelurahan Jatimulya, Kecamatan Tambun Selatan and Kabupaten Bekasi) have not been used for Sunday Mass following an agreement with the local administration; in exchange the authorities said they would provide the three Churches at least a “prayer hall” pending a decision on their application to build a regular place of worship. They also pledged not to destroy the home churches used up to that time.
The promise was not kept. The Protestant clergyman complained that they had to pay local authorities an excessively high rent for the use of prayer hall, which forced them hold their services in private, in home churches, without a permit.
This problem is widespread and very real. In fact changes in 2006 to a ministerial decree of 1969 that regulates the building of places of worship has not changed things that much; it is still very difficult to get a permit to build churches, so much so that many religious groups have had to practice their faith illegally. This in turn has provided Muslim fundamentalists with a good excuse to carry out violent attacks against home churches.
After getting an advance notice, the three Churches in Bekazi and their lawyers approached the appropriate authorities to suspend the demolition order. Their appeals fell on deaf ears.
For the past two weeks local Christian leaders have organised prayers meetings and protests to denounce what for them is a “discriminatory act.”

Polio on the rise in north Nigerian state
8 hours ago
KANO, Nigeria (AFP) — Officials in northern Nigeria's most populuous state have said they are worried by a sharp rise in the number of cases of the paralysing disease poliomyelitis.
"In the last six months we have recorded 90 polio cases which is a radical shift from the same period in 2007 when we had zero cases," Kano health commissioner Aisha Isyaku Kiru told a gathering of health officials and donor agencies late Friday.
She linked the increase to a decline in polio immunisation as parents have become increasingly reluctant to take their children for routine immunisation.
"Events in the past few months in the journey towards polio eradication have been disheartening," Kano state governor Ibrahim Shekarau told the same gathering.
Kano has been the epicentre of the transmission of the crippling polio virus to other parts of the world since 2003 when the authorities suspended polio immunization for 13 months.
The suspension followed claims by radical muslim clerics and some medical doctors that the vaccine was laced with substances that could render girls infertile as part of a US-led western plot to depopulate Africa.
Although the state resumed its polio vaccination campaign after clinical trials in and outside Nigeria proved the vaccine safe, Kano had already infected other countries in the region that had been considered polio-free.
Even after the vaccination campaign resumed, health officials noted a falling off in interest on the part of parents.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently listed Nigeria, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan as the only polio-endemic countries in the world.
Seven states in the north: Kano, Katsina, Yobe, Jigawa, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kebbi, have been declared as polio-endemic states by Nigerian health authorities.
The pronouncement by the WHO "was embarrassing enough to provoke immediate response to the challenge by any serious nation", Nigeria's acting health minister Hassan Lawan told the gathering.
"We shall this time meet the March 2009 target for the interruption of the transmission of wild polio virus in Nigeria," Lawan said.
"Once you capture Kano, you capture the north and the fight against polio in Nigeria is won," Lawan said.

Violent protests over land for shrine in Indian Kashmir
Jun 28, 2008, 10:47 GMT
Srinagar, Kashmir - Hundreds of people clashed with the police in India-administered Kashmir as protests against a land transfer for a Hindu shrine entered the sixth day on Saturday, officials and news reports said.
Shops, businesses and educational institutions were closed as public transport remained off roads in the state capital Srinagar and other towns across the Muslim-majority state.
Local police said thousands took to the streets in Srinagar and other areas for the biggest protests in the region since a widespread agitation in 1989 supporting a separatist insurgency.
Separatist activists shouting slogans like 'Stop the sale of Kashmir' and 'We want freedom' hoisted green Islamic flags atop the clock-tower at Lal Chowk in the heart of Srinagar.
Three Kashmiris died and nearly 300 people have been injured in the unrest that erupted Monday to oppose the transfer of 40 hectares of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.
The body organizes the pilgrimage to Amarnath cave, considered one of the holiest shrines in the Hindu faith.
Several areas in Srinagar witnessed pitched battles between the police and stone-pelting groups.
Police said it had to baton-charge and fire tear-gas shells to disperse the mobs and an estimated 20 people were injured in the protests.
The NDTV network reported that four demonstrators sustained gun- shot wounds after mobs attacked police stations in the city forcing police to open fire.
Protests also intensified in areas in the Budgam, Pulwama, Anantnag, Baramulla and Bandipore districts against the state government's controversial move.
Meanwhile, the ruling Congress government held a cabinet meeting to consider revoking the decision to allot the land to the shrine board and end the large-scale violence.
The state government has so far maintained that the land was transferred for construction of facilities for the pilgrims, including prefabricated huts and toilets.
But leaders from the separatist Hurriyat conference party said the decision was part of a conspiracy to settle non-Muslims in the region with the aim of altering the demographic character of the state.
Kashmir, a picturesque region, has witnessed much bloodshed since a separatist revolt peaked in the late 1980s.
According to government data, more than 40,000 people - civilians, militants and security forces - have been killed in Indian- administered Kashmir since the 1990s.

Bomb attack on peaceful protestors against extortion; 12 hurt, three serious, many including KYKL, UNLF express dismay
The Imphal Free Press
Imphal, Jun 26: At least 12 persons including two minor girls were hurt in a bomb blast after suspected militants hurled a grenade at some protestors staging a dharna against demands made by an underground group at the Ningthoukhong bazar under Bishnupur police station around 11.45 am this morning.
The incident occurred when shop owners and vendors of Ningthoukhong bazar were holding a sit-in protest in connection with a demand made on every shop owner of Ningthoukhong bazar to provide two mobile phone hand sets each to a particular underground group. All shop owners and vendors of the areas had shut down their shops from 8 am this morning and were participating in the protest.
During the course of the protest at the bazar, at around 11.45 am, three persons who came riding a Pulsar motorcycle and a NV scooter, suddenly hurled a hand grenade at the protestors which exploded after rolling into a roadside drain resulting in injuries to 12 persons.
The injured persons were immediately evacuated to the nearby Bishnupur district hospital. They were identified as RK Surchandra, 45, son of RK Thmabalsana of Ningthoukhong ward No. 3, Khundrakpam Tomba, 40, son of Kh Bira of Ninghthoukhong ward No. 2, RK Kerani, 28, son of Gulapsana of Ningthoukhong Gopinath Leikai, RK Anupama, 7, daughter of Lembi Devi of Ningthoukhong Ward No. 2, Khwairakpam Brojamohal, 42, of Ningthoukhong ward No. 4, Thokchom Akupi, 10, daughter of Ibungo Singh of Ningthoukhong bazar, Laishram Bashi, 37, son of Thambalngou of Ningthoukhong ward No. 2, Wairokpam Sureshkumar, 45, son of Ningthoukhong ward No. 12, Thokchom Bheigyachandra, 45, of Ningthoukhong bazar and Thokchom Inaocha, 32, son of Mani of Ningthoukhong ward No. 2.
Two of the injured who were only slightly injured by splinters at the hands were discharged from Bishnupur district hospital after first aid. Their names were not enrolled in the hospital register.
Three of the victims identified as Thokchom Akupi who sustained splinter injuries at her left lower abdomen, RK Anupama who was hurt at her right chest, and RK Surchandra who was hurt at his abdomen were later referred to the RIMS hospital in Imphal after their condition became serious this afternoon.
Both the minor girls, RK Anupama and Thokchom Akupi, were hurt when they came out to the bazar with their mothers while the rest of the injured were among the protestors at the sit in-protest at the bazar.
Meanwhile, the public of Ningthoukhong area launched a road blockade along the Tiddim road from this afternoon in the aftermath of the bomb attack, resulting in serious inconveniences being caused to the public along the road.
Many civil organisations and political parties including the HERICOUN, AMUCO and CPI(M) Manipur State Council have expressed their deep concern over the blast at Ningthoukhong bazar which they called an act of terrorists.
The incident clearly indicates that there is no more room for the common people to speak out or demand their democratic rights and also shows the total failure of the state government to provide security to the masses in the state, many organisations commented.
The United People`s Front, Manipur also condemned the act of hurling a bomb at a protest site at Ningthoukhong bazar while making an appeal to those concerned not to repeat such dastardly actions in public areas and expressed its solidarity with those injured in the incident.
In the meantime, the underground PREPAK in a statement signed by one Konthoujam Chingkhei Meetei, secretary in-charge, department of publicity and propaganda of the PREPAK has clarified that the outfit was not in any way related with the blast that took place at Ningthoukhong bazar today. He also condemned the incident.
Meanwhile, a public meeting was held this evening at the Ningthoukhong bazar to condemn the inhuman bomb attack. It was resolved in the meeting that if the responsible group does not give a clarification on or before June 28 the Imphal-Tiddim road would be indefinitely blockaded from the next day onwards.

AITUC, LJP, BJP condemn killings of non Manipuris
The Imphal Free Press
Imphal, Jun 26: The Manipur chapter of the All India Trade Congress (AITUC) has strongly condemned the manner in which daily labourers are being targetted.
In a press release, the chapter has denounced the spate of violence and killings unleashed against labourers, drivers plying on the highways and construction workers at Moreh and questioned the meaning of having a government that has failed to protect its citizens.
A meeting of the AITUC Manipur has further resolved to pursue the current situations in the forthcoming General Council Meeting at Bokaro on June 28-29.
The Lok Janshakti Party, Manipur has also strongly condemned the killings of non Manipuri labourers as a cowardly act.
It has further said that such acts show that the intelligence network has totally failed and demanded that the chief minister O Ibobi Singh should allocate necessary ex-gratia payment for the bereaved families.
The BJP Mahila Morcha in a statement said that even before the outrage has died down over the killing of non-locals in March this year, killings have taken place yet again on June 24.
The morcha strongly condemned the inhuman killings and at the same time appealed to those concerned to put an end to such killings.

The Copts expose Muslims terror in sweeping demonstrations all over the Western world
By ibn Misr on June 25, 2008 6:37 AM | Email this entry | Permalink | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)
No one on earth knows Islam and muslims better than the Copts. Will the West get the message and wake up?
All the reports we posted about muslims' terror attacks, and the persecution of Arab governments of the native Christian minorities, were not aimed to plead with Western governments for the sake of the Copts or the Christians of the Middle East, these governments can't even control the muslim populations in their own countries, but to expose to the Western public the amount of hate, rage, and viciousness ordinary muslim "moderates," are capable of, which is limitless, for the cause of allah. All this hate and viciousness exist already in the West with well organized, well financed cells, more motivated, more creative, more indoctrinated, more recruiting and in much more better position than prior to 911. They even hold their own motivational gatherings, seminars, and became bolder and more immune than ever before.
Did Western populations became the hostage of islam or collateral damage for the special interests and the Arab lobby?
We made sure at all times that every US administration, the Congress, and all Western governments were fully informed and documented by all Coptic organizations, human rights organizations, and their Embassies of the quasi official ethnic cleansing going on against all native Middle Eastern Christians. But in their equation, their special interests with the muslim world and particularly the oil lobby, made their defense for universal human rights, and freedom of religion principles, just empty words, even disregarding an all out islamic radicalization, in Egypt and across the muslim world that ultimately feeds islamic terrorism in the West.
Los Angeles Times
In the midst of continuing sectarian tensions between Muslims and Coptic Christians in Egypt [Read: continuing muslims attacks] the Coptic Diaspora has recently called for demonstrations in the U.S. and European cities. [There will be demonstrations also in Canada and Australia.]
Hundreds of Coptic migrants took to the streets in the Netherlands, France and the U.S., raising banners reading "Save Christians in Egypt," "Stop Islamic Terrorism" and "Help! Christians of Egypt are under attack."
The protests follow an eruption of violence between Muslims and Copts [Read: eruption of muslims violent attacks against the peaceful Copts] in several parts of Egypt. Last month a land dispute involving a Coptic monastery left one Muslim man killed [This muslim never set foot in the monastery, and neither his body, nor any autopsy report were ever produced] in the southern province of Menya. Four Copts, including two monks, were injured. The clash [Again, read: the muslim terrorists thugs attack. The monks never clashed with the thug’s attackers] arose after the monastery began building a wall around neighboring farming land, saying it belonged to the church. Days earlier in Cairo, four Copts were shot dead in a jewelry shop by two gunmen who fled without stealing anything. [Egypt is a police state, if the four slaughtered were muslims, the police would've got the perpetrators in less than 24 hours.]
Egypt is predominantly Sunni Muslim; the Coptic minority is believed to constitute almost 10% of a population of 78 million. [Copts in Egypt numbers no less than 18% (14-15 millions), by the Coptic Church estimate. Since the military coup d’état (military putsch), in 1952, all consecutive governments refused to do any census, to marginalize the Copts who are represented by 0.88% in the Egyptian parliament, one government Minister, and 0% in everything else including the media, sport teams, and even in show business.] An estimated 2 million Copts live in the Diaspora.
[Read: 2 million that were forced to leave. Dr. Magdy Yacoub, the most prominent and world renowned heart surgeon in the world, based in London, Britain, and knighted by the Queen, was told bluntly, after graduating, 1st of his class from medical school in Egypt: "don't expect to have a future in the university as a teacher, there is no room for a Christian donkey here, we don't want you here." This is the, "Academic," language the distinguished medical school professors used, if that tells you something.
The same thing could be said about a great number of the most prominent Coptic doctors in the Cleveland Clinic and all over the Western world, just to name two examples. Dr., Professor, Sir Magdi Yacoub, and the prominent Coptic doctors of the Cleveland Clinic paid back those muslim Egyptians that called them Coptic donkeys and threw them out, in a very special way.
For more than 25 years, Dr.Yacoub takes his whole medical team; twice a year to Egypt, giving up his holidays, to give life by providing free heart surgery for poor children that otherwise would have no chance of surviving. That's beside the lectures he gives, to the top Egyptian medical professors. He established and developed heart surgery departments in several medical schools, lobbied international organizations and Western governments to provide all the medical equipments necessary for these departments, provided scholarships and internships to a score of Egyptian doctors to train under his guidance in Britain, all for free.
Anwar Sadat, one of the biggest oppressors of the Copts during his presidency, and responsible for two infamous Copt massacres, declared publicly in the Egyptian parliament, "I am a muslim president of a muslim country, ” when he was shot, immediately his wife called the Egyptian Embassy in London to prepare a private plane to transport Dr. Yacoub in emergency to Cairo. But the God of the Copts was faster in treating him and took him to where mohammad, his buddy, was, before Dr. Yacoub boarded the plane.
Imagine for a second, if president Bush declared solemnly and publicly in a speech televised nationally from the US Congress, "I am a Christian president for a Christian country." What you think would happen? I'll leave that to you.
Dr. Yacoub, "The Coptic donkey," is more famous in Egypt than the president, Hosni Mubarak. He is regarded as a virtual deity, revered, almost God-like.
The same story, from beginning to end, could be told about Dr. Fawzy G. Estafanous, chairman, Division of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. He is another world renowned, "Coptic Donkey," that his contribution to the Cleveland Clinic, for the last forty years, made it what it is today. To be treated by him, all the kings and presidents (the gang) of the Arab world, made the Clinic their medical Mecca, and trust their lives into the hands of Dr. Estafanous rather than their allah and mohammad's recipe of camel urine.
He also paid back those muslim Egyptians that forced him out, by denying him an assistant professor position, in the same manner as Dr.Yacoub. He was instrumental in advancing medical studies all over the Arab world, establishing advanced research center, giving the opportunity to scores of Egyptian and arab doctors to be trained in the Clinic under his, and other Copt doctors, guidance. Treated scores of poor Egyptians with his team, all free.
The contribution of the Copts to Egypt was not limited to the medical field with these two examples from many others.
Dr.Adel Sedra was refused a teacher assistant position at the faculty of engineering, Cairo University to pursue graduate studies for being another, 'Coptic donkey." He too paid back, by opening the door, and providing scholarships to scores of Egyptian muslim engineers in the most prestigious world class engineering faculties of Toronto and Waterloo Universities for which he's the Dean, and helped establish the most advanced technology research centers in many Egyptian universities.
Hundreds of stories could be told, but we'll stop here and ask a question: did all this changed the hearts and minds of Egyptian muslims towards the Copts? to answer this I'll ask you another question that will help you get the answer. Did the opportunities and the open arms hospitality extended by Britain changed the minds and hearts of the suicide "Doctor," bombers? Did it changed the hearts and minds of Abu Hamza el Masri, Abu Qatada, and scores of other muslims when Britain granted them asylum to save them from hanging at the end of a rope in their own countries, and provided them, and their extended families, security, housing, and a comfortable life, all compliment from the British tax payer? did it changed the hearts and minds of Omar Abdel Rahman, the blind sheikh and mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing when America let him in to save him from the hands of the Egyptian government, or El Amoudi, or Sami El Erian that was given generously the opportunity to live the American dream?
There is another measurement we can use to gauge the muslims equation. On who's hearts and minds, Western countries spent and will keep spending (from your pocket) trillions of dollars to try, with no guarantee, to keep you safe? Who's "hearts and minds," are draining all the resources of all the Intelligence agencies of the Western world, that has to monitor those hearts and minds, especially their worship places, round the clock?
Add to this the hundreds of millions of dollars Western governments dump (also from your pocket) on what they call (please don't laugh) the battle of hearts and minds.
A muslim that takes mohammad as a role model, and call him, "The most honorable of all prophets," can't have neither hearts nor minds. This is not an opinion; this is the doctrine of islam. Once a muslim discover the existence of a heart and mind, he is not a muslim any more, and islam would consider him a heretic deserving death for committing the unforgivable sin for not using the heart and mind of mohammad, the most famous mass murderer in history (it's all by the admission of their sources, nothing from me), and they're proud about it. That's the only heart and mind any muslim is allowed to use.
Do you know of any major world religion that has its places of worship, its spiritual leaders, and its "devout" followers under constant surveillance in every Western country, other than the, "Religion of peace?"
When President Bush and other Western officials give us the, "Islam religion of peace," salvo, they should finish the sentence, "Islam is a religion of peace, under constant surveillance." That explains why they never laughed when saying it, it kept me wondering for a while. Thank God for never saying that Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Confuciunism, and ... are religions of peace. They would've been sued, by the followers of these religions, for hate speech and slandering.
It's worth noting that the professors of the medical and engineering faculties that benefitted, and still benefitting greatly from the Copts mentioned above, are known to be the most hateful against Coptic students, and the most fundamentalists. It's not a coincidence that Zawahri is a doctor, and Ben Laden is an engineer.]
Since Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak came to power in 1981, the Coptic Church has sought to project an image of religious co-existence and has not turned to inflammatory discourse on sectarian violence. Yet the response to the recent bloodshed suggests that the church is about to change its style. This month the Coptic Holy Senate issued a relatively strongly worded statement calling on Mubarak to put an end to armed attacks against Copts and ensure their safety.
[We never got any reply from Mubarak, nor he ever uttered a word about the safety concern of 15 million, supposedly, Egyptian citizens. But he doesn't stop parading himself like a super model all over the Middle East and Europe (he hasn't been invited in the US since 2004, Bush can't stand him no more.), as the defender of the Palestinian rights, but he sees no problem for the Copts with no rights. As a side note, him and his family stole about 40 billion in the last 27 years, while his people stand in line and kill themselves for a loaf of bread. These are the thugs they call presidents and kings, defenders of the great religion of truth, so what you expect out of their people.]
The church, which refrains from publicly criticizing the regime, has often distanced itself from the demands made by its followers overseas. This week violence broke out between Copts and Muslims over a rumor of the kidnapping of a Muslim woman and her son in Fayoum province, about 80 miles south of Cairo. One Muslim reportedly died of a heart attack and four Copts were injured in the clashes.
The tension comes at a crucial moment for the Coptic Orthodox Church as the frail Pope Shenouda III is away for medical treatment in the U.S. at the Cleveland Clinic.

The Copts expose Muslims terror in sweeping demonstrations all over the Western world

Case of Hindu to be buried as Muslim goes to court
The Islamic authorities claim that he had converted to Islam, and are not giving his body back to his family. But the family protests that the conversion has not been proved, and is going to court. This is the fate that increasingly meets controversial conversion cases, causing social tension.
Kuala Lumpur (AsiaNews/Agencies) - B. Elangesvaran, aged 34, hanged himself on June 22. After the autopsy, the Parit Buntar hospital in Penang did not give his body back to his family, because the Islamic religious department says that the man had converted to Islam, and must be given an Islamic funeral.
His brother, S. Selvam, contests that there is no proof of the conversion, and that they showed him "only a police report alleging that my brother had embraced Islam at the Penang Islamic religious department . . . and a letter with some scribbling allegedly done by Elangesvaran that he had converted", but this was unsigned and does not indicate any witnesses to the conversion.
Now Selvam has appealed to the high court for the restitution of the body, and for permission to conduct a Hindu funeral "without interference". About 60 percent of the 27 million Malaysians are Malay Muslims, and Islam is the state religion. The other 40% are mainly Chinese and Indians, who generally practice their religion without problems. But it is not rare to see disputes over alleged conversions, and in 2008 prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi establish that those who convert to Islam must advise their families, precisely in order to avoid disputes after their death, as has already happened a number of times.
A. Vaithilingam, president of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism, notes how "people who never knew him want to bury him, and are not permitting his family to take care of this". "It's the same old story. ... Every time there is a problem, the government makes a statement to ease tension and then forgets all about it".
The question is complex in part because the judicial system provides both tribunals for non-Muslims and Islamic sharia to handle legal questions for the Muslim faithful, where the rights of non-Islamic minorities are often sacrificed.

How About A Fatwa Against
Triple Talaq, Wife Beating,
Child Marriage…..
By A. Faizur Rahman
17 June, 2008
Countercurrents.org
That the fatwa against terrorism issued by the Darul Uloom Deoband is a positive development in Indian political history was proved by the fact that it was supported even by the anti-Muslim BJP. And there can be no doubt that it sent a strong message to the extremists exploiting Islam to gain gullible recruits for their unIslamic cause. But unfortunately, Muslim organisations have not shown the same interest and alacrity in clarifying their position on a host of other issues, particularly those concerning women.
An article in The Times of India (The ulema strike back, June 15) quoted Mahmood Madani of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind as saying that the ulema were forced to issue this fatwa because the western media had not stopped demonizing Islam. According to the same article, Kamal Farooqui of the Muslim Personal law Board was of the opinion that the "new awaking" among the ulema was in response to secularists' accusation that they were not coming out openly against terrorism.
This sophistical reasoning cannot fool the masses. Is terrorism the only anti-human issue against which a fatwa deserves to be pronounced? Has not the misinterpretation of the Quran on sensitive issues such as divorce, stoning to death for adultery, wife beating and child marriage defamed Islam enough? How can these self-appointed spokesmen of the Muslims ignore the fact the organisations in which they are members continue to victimize Muslim women through arbitrary legal decisions in the name of the shariah?
For instance, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board in its Nikahnama released in May 2005 tacitly approved instant triple talaq which renders a woman stranger to her husband within seconds. The same is true for child marriage which, shockingly, has been legitimised by the Board. Section 3 of the Nikahnama states that marriage between minors or to minors is valid if conducted with the approval of their parents or guardians.
It is a well known fact that marriage in Islam is a civil contract described as meesaaq by the Quran (4:21), and as such it can be finalized only between persons who are both intellectually and physically mature enough to understand and fulfill the responsibilities of such a contract. This can be clearly understood from the Quranic verse concerning the orphans which commands, "And test the orphans until they reach the age of nikah (marriage), and if you find in them rushdh (maturity of intellect) release their property to them."(4:6).This verse clearly proves that the age of marriage is the age of majority.
And if the marriage of a child is performed while he or she is still a minor, Islamic law gives the minor the option to dissolve the marriage on attaining majority basically to protect the minor from an unscrupulous or undesirable exercise of authority by the parents or the guardian. This is known as Khiyar-al-Buloogh or the Option of Puberty and is based on a hadith in Mishkath-al-Masabih wherein the Prophet gave a minor girl the option to repudiate her marriage when she informed him that her father had given her in a marriage which was not to her liking. Therefore, on what basis does the AIMPLB justify child marriage?
In another interesting incident concerning the shariah, The New York Times on March 22, 2007 reported that a German Judge turned down citing the Quran, a Muslim wife's request for a fast-track divorce on the ground that her husband beat her from the beginning of their marriage. The Judge justified her ruling saying that the couple came from a Moroccan cultural milieu in which it is common for husbands to beat their wives because the Quran sanctions such physical abuse.
The Judge was obviously quoting one of the most mistranslated verses of the Quran (4:34) which supposedly allows wife beating. The mistranslated word is wazribuhunna which is derived from the root zaraba. Major commentators of the Quran including Ibn Kasir, Pickthall, and Maulana Maududi, the founder of Jamaat-e-Islami, have rendered this word as "beat them" ignoring the fact that the word zaraba has various other shades of meaning.
Out of the 49 times it occurs in the Quran, 31 times it has been used in the meaning of "to explain by giving an example." Only 10 times it has used to mean "to strike" but mostly in the context of Moses "striking the rock" or the sea, and angels "striking the faces" of the sinners. The verse 4:34 actually talks about the various means at the disposal of a husband to bring about a reconciliation with his wife and obviously beating the wife cannot be an option to sort out differences. Therefore, the translation "beat them" is clearly not justified in this context.
Undoubtedly, the fatwa against terrorism is a step in the right direction but it is not enough because the targeting of the entire community in the war against terror is not the only problem facing the Muslims. The internal issues discussed above too need a serious consideration by the ulema. For, in the case of the designs of "enemies of Islam" to defame the religion, the world knows that the entire community cannot be guilty at once. But in the case of the so-called shariah laws concerning triple talaq, stoning to death, the killing of apostates and other such issues, not just others but the Muslims themselves realise that these are anti-human provisions not approved by the Quran. If urgency is not shown in resolving these issues the ulema would find it impossible to move away from "destructive emotionalism" towards forming a "constructive agenda for the community" as envisaged by Mr. Mehmood Madani.

Krishnagar, June 9: A woman killed herself last night after her husband pronounced talaq on her, refusing to believe she had been late returning home because of the back-to-back bandhs last week.
Chimatan Bibi, 42, had gone to see her brother’s pregnant daughter at Behrampore State General Hospital on June 4. The bandhs — one called by the Left Front and the other by the Trinamul Congress — fell on June 5 and 6.
Chimatan had no choice but to stay back at her brother’s home. When she returned to her Nadia home on Saturday night, husband Rahim Sheikh, 50, demanded the reason for the delay.
“He refused to accept her explanation and pronounced the triple talaq, asking her to leave the house within a couple of days. This might have led the woman to end her life,” said Manas Chowdhury, the officer in charge of Thanarpara police station.
Januara Bibi, wife of Chimatan’s brother, had accompanied her to Nadia. She told the police that Rahim had pronounced talaq in her presence.
On Sunday night, Chimatan drank pesticide at her Karimpur home, 180km from Calcutta.

A DOCTOR charged with raping a female patient claims his suspension by the state's medical board breaches his human rights
Ahmed Mohamed Sabet was already under investigation for alleged misconduct with a patient when he was charged in March with the rape and indecent assault of another patient.
He was suspended at a Victorian Medical Practitioners Board hearing in April.
The GP claims the suspension infringed his right to the presumption of innocence.
Dr Sabet has since been granted an interim right to practice under strict conditions that include him not treating female patients.
The charges are still before the courts.
In what presiding justice Elizabeth Hollingworth described as a legal test case for Victoria's Charter of Human Rights, Dr Sabet is seeking a Supreme Court review of the Medical Practitioners Board decision to suspend him.
A win for Dr Sabet would affect the right of all boards and tribunals in Victoria to suspend a person facing criminal charges.
"The tribunal is bound to uphold the human right of the presumption of innocence every time it deals with criminal charges if it thinks it is relevant to do so," Dr Sabet's lawyer Jeremy Ruskin, QC, today told the Supreme Court.
"It must respect the right of the applicant not to be presumed guilty."
Mr Ruskin questioned why the board ruled the public was in more danger now that Dr Sabet had been charged with rape than when "disturbingly similar" allegations were made last year.
Tim Ginnane, SC, for the Board told the court it was the board's responsibility to protect the public.
He said the suspension was an interim decision that would be reviewed.
The court heard a woman known only as AB raised misconduct allegations against Dr Sabet with the board in June 2007.
The board was investigating those allegations when notified by police that Dr Sabet had been charged with three counts of rape and five counts of indecent assault following an alleged incident with a patient known as YZ in October last year.
According to his Medical Practitioners Board registration details, Dr Sabet gained his medical qualifications at the University of Cairo in 1988.
Under his interim registration conditions, which expire at 4pm (AEST) tomorrow, Dr Sabet must see only male patients and is restricted to working at five suburban clinics.
The civil trial before Justice Hollingworth continues tomorrow.

US aid to Pak mostly unaccounted for

WASHINGTON: Nearly six billion US dollars have been provided by the US to Pakistan to fight against terrorism since the September 9, 2001 attacks on America. But the funds have hardly been used for that purpose, an independent audit has found.
The findings by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released in a report on Tuesday showed a troubling lack of oversight and accountability for the US funds to Pakistan that were meant to combat terrorism.
The findings angered Congress members with the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrat Howard Berman expressing shock at the lack of oversight of several billion dollars heading the way of Pakistan by way of Coalition Support Funds which is funding for the war on terror.
"I'm shocked at the lack of oversight of billions of dollars that have been doled out in Pakistan in an effort to fight terrorism," Berman said in a statement.
The US has provided Pakistan about USD 5.6 billion in payments since 2001 attacks on World Trade Centre which killed more than 3000 people.
The GAO found several cases where the Bush Administration could not explain or account for such payments, including millions of dollars for road construction with no evidence that any roads were built, and reimbursement costs to the Pakistan military that may be duplicative.
"The report documents how US funds were used without any evidence that they supported counter-terrorism efforts.
"The US government is being asked to reimburse Pakistan for non-incremental air defence radar maintenance when al Qaeda is not even known to have an air force. The purpose of these funds is to support the fight against extremists, not to boost Pakistan's conventional warfare capability," he said.

Turkey: Over 1,000 Honor Killings in 5 Years
The Prime Ministry's Human Rights Directorate issued a report on “honor killings,” which contains discouraging findings, daily Radikal reported Friday.
In Istanbul, at least one person dies every week because of honor killings according to the report, which is the most comprehensive in its field. The number of murders committed for honor in the last five years has exceeded 1,000. The murderers are treated as heroes in prisons and they do not regret their crimes.
“The Report on Honor Killings” was presented by the president of the Prime Ministry's Human Rights Directorate, professor Dr. Tahsin Fendoğlu, at a meeting called “Women and Participation: Problems and Solutions.”
According to the report, the number of honor killings was 150 in 2002, while it rose to 220 in 2007. Occurrence of honor killings is inversely proportional with education levels. Not only women but also men fall victim to honor killings. Besides, around 9 percent of the murders are committed by children.
The report declares that metropolitan cities are leading crime scenes of honor killings. In the last five years, 167 people were murdered in Istanbul. Ankara followed with 144, İzmir with 121, and Diyarbakır with 69. The crimes were mostly perpetrated by people with origins in eastern Turkey. The report states that the number of honor killings in Istanbul increased to 53 in 2007 from 27 in 2006.

Afghanistan: Death penalty call for man who spread Koran translation
Karachi, 23 June (AKI) - (by Syed Saleem Shahzad) - An Afghan journalist accused of distributing an unacceptable translation of the Koran should be put to death, says former Prime Minister Ahmad Shah Ahmadzai.
Former journalist Ghows Zalmay, who was also the spokesman for Afghanistan's Attorney-General, was arrested in November last year for distributing a translation of the Koran into Dari, one of Afghanistan's two official languages.
Ahmadzai, who ran in the 2004 presidential election against current President Hamid Karzai, told Adnkronos International (AKI) he supported the death penalty for Zalmay.
"Today Afghanistan is full of vices. Several Afghan restaurants serve liquor, despite it being illegal and on top of it, such material is distributed," Ahmadzai told AKI.
"I am in favour of his death."
Muslim scholars in Afghanistan reportedly said that the new version of the Koran misinterpreted verses about alcohol, begging, homosexuality and adultery. They also complained that this version was not accompanied by the original version of the Koran in Arabic.
Ghows, 50, is reportedy in jail after being accused of blasphemy and his lawyers say he risks the death penalty. He is expected to face charges in an Afghan court within the next week.
"This is all an American conspiracy to deviate Afghans from their faith," said Al-Hajj Farooq Hussaini, the leader of a Muslim prayer association in the western city of Herat in an interview with Adnkronos International (AKI).
"They want us to be converted Christians or simply atheists. This American occupation of Afghanistan is worse than the occupation of Afghanistan by the Soviets," he said.
Hussaini also referred to the case of Abdul Rahman, an Afghan Christian convert who was granted asylum in Italy in 2006. Rahman escaped a possible death sentence in Afghanistan for becoming a Christian.
"Earlier they protected Abdul Rahman who left Islam and converted to Christianity and now they are encouraging the distribution of the fake translations of Koran," said Hussaini who is also the leader of a group led by Ismail Khan, Afghanistan's Energy Minister.
"Ghows Zalmay should be given an exemplary punishment for his crime," he said.
Many Muslim bloggers have labelled some new translations of the Koran, as the "American Koran", which they say is unauthentic and aimed at distracting Muslims from their faith.

The only Hindu sheikh of Arab world is a Gujarati
Nija Shah
Thursday, June 26, 2008 02:24 IST
AHMEDABAD: The world’s only Hindu sheikh happens to be an uncompromising vegetarian, his devotion is anchored to Lord Shreenathji, and though his admired entrepreneurship branches out across the globe, his roots lie in Gujarat.
If that isn't enough, the Sultan of Oman has offered his yacht Lo'Lo' to this NRI for developing tourism business in the Sultanate.
Kanaksi Khimji, the head of Khimji Ramdas Group of Companies, was conferred the title of sheikh by the Sultan of Oman. Khimji Ramdas and M/s V. Ships Leisure have also been appointed the ship managers of the yacht, which will undergo remodelling and refurbishment work at the Port of Sohar, over the next three months.
Khimji, a practising Gujarati Vaishnav, was born in 1936 in Muscat; and he completed his matriculation in Mumbai. Later, he became one of the very few Indians to be offered Omani citizenship. Generations ago, Khimji's grandfather, Ramdas Thackersey, had set sail for Oman from Mandvi, in Kutch.
Today, dressed in a flowing full-length robe and wearing the kaffiyeh, the cloth that covers the head, Khimji easily passes off as an Omani. When he married in 1960, Khimji was presented with a silver jug by Sultan Said Taimur Bin Faisal. The queen mother, Bibi Mahezun, had given him two of her photographs, a privilege accorded to only a few. The former president of India, Shankar Dayal Sharma, had called Khimji 'the real ambassador of India to the Gulf countries'.
Chandrakant Chothani, one of the founding members of the Muscat Gujarati Samaj said, "Kanaksibhai has not only earned the respect of the Indian community but also of the citizens of Oman."
Khimji was one of the NRIs to receive the Centre's Bhartiya Pravasi Award, in 2003.
Indeed, Khimji's 'Bhartiya' persona is reflected in his spiritual practices. He has an idol of Lord Shreenathji installed in a temple at his home. He does not touch non-vegetarian food; his office kitchen serves delicacies like rotla and chaas that keep everybody's palate satisfied with wholesome, and vegetarian, Gujarati delicacies.
Khimji has contributed considerably to the public sphere in Oman as well as in India. In 1975, under Khimji's leadership, the Indian merchants’ body in Oman established the first-ever English medium school in Muscat.

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - About 2.5 million Nepalis need immediate food assistance and 3.9 million others are at risk of becoming food insecure because of rising prices, the United Nations food agency said on Wednesday.
The state-owned Nepal Oil Corporation raised the price of petrol and diesel by about 25 percent this month to raise money to pay for increased fuel imports as global prices rise.
But the move triggered street protests and a national shut down of transport for two days as rising transport costs pushed food prices higher.
"While the rising food prices are causing belt-tightening across the globe, its most devastating effects are in developing countries like Nepal where there is the added dimension of a place emerging from a 10-year conflict," said Richard Ragan, the Nepal chief of the U.N. World Food Programme.
"Here, belt tightening means, 'do I have an evening meal or a morning meal?" he said. "In some cases, it means will I be able to eat at all today?"
A Maoist civil war raged in Nepal for more than a decade causing more than 13,000 deaths since 1996, forcing 200,000 to flee their homes and devastating infrastructure in areas like agriculture.
Rising food and fuel prices are forcing ordinary Nepalis to spend more and more on food, according to WFP. Nearly one third of Nepalis live on a daily income of less than a dollar.
Even before the recent hike in fuel prices, the cost of cooking oil, coarse rice and kerosene, common items for most Nepalis, has risen 30 percent, 23 percent and 17 percent respectively over the past six months.
"All this is going to go up even more now after the oil price increase," another WFP official said.
Rising food prices could have "disastrous" effects on Nepal's achievements in health and poverty reduction, Ragan said.
"Considering the impact of rising food prices, the poverty rate could grow from 31 percent to 50 percent and malnutrition rates are likely to rise significantly," Ragan said.
He said rising food and fuel prices were constraining WFP's efforts to provide food assistance to more than the two million served now.
Nepal's Maoist former rebels won a surprise victory in the April elections for a constituent assembly on promises to build a new Nepal and are expected to form a government soon.
"People are clearly tense and they expect a great deal out of the new government," Ragan said. "I'm concerned about how people will react when they can only afford one meal a day."

For the first time in secular India, Ahmadiyas have been denied permission to hold a meeting despite a High Court order allowing them to do so. The Andhra Pradesh Government gave in to Muslim protests, led by MIM, and threats of violence
The recent cancellation of a State-level meeting of the Ahmadiya Jamat in Hyderabad following protests from all the sects of the Muslim community marks a new chapter in over a century-long struggle between the two sides.
Though Ahmadiyas, with distinctly different religious belief from Muslims, have been around ever since its founder Mirza Ghulam Ahmad claimed in 1889 that he was the 'new prophet' and Muslims have always treated the claim as blasphemous and opposed it, this is first time that a public meeting of Ahmadiyas had to be cancelled in India due to the resistance from orthodox Muslims.
The Andhra Pradesh Government cited breakdown in the electricity supply system for withdrawing permission to the congregation at Lalitha Kala Thornam open theatre, owned by the State Cultural Affairs Department. But it is obvious that the massive and joint campaign by Muslim organisations in Hyderabad forced the Government's hands. Ahmadiyas, also known as Qadianis after the birthplace of their movement at Qadian in Punjab, had to silently accept the Government's order.
A night before the Ahmadiyas' day-long congregation was scheduled, around a lakh of Muslims attended an "anti-Qadianiat" protest meeting at Darussalam grounds, the headquarters of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen. The protesters threatened that if the Ahmadiyas were allowed to go ahead with their meeting "in the name of Islam and Muslims", they would lay siege to the venue.
According to the Ahmadiya Jamat, it had sought permission for the now cancelled meeting in Hyderabad two months ago. Initially the State Government had refused to grant permission in view of the opposition and protest from Muslims. Consequently they went to the High Court and the court granted them permission only two days before the meeting was scheduled. On the advocate-general's objection that it could cause a law and order problem, the court observed that it was the duty of the Government to maintain law and order and provide protection to the meeting.
However, hours before the scheduled march to the venue, the Government issued a notice cancelling not only the Ahmadiya meeting but also all other functions in different auditoriums and buildings within the sprawling Public Gardens. The Muslim organisations have filed a caveat in the High Court, saying the Ahmadiyas should not be allowed to hold any public event in the name of Muslims and Islam.
The Ahmadiyas were planning to celebrate the 100th anniversary of "khilafat" of their community, marking the passage of the leadership from Mirza Ghulam Ahmad after his death to his successor in 1908. Earlier this year the celebrations had started in Qadian, the world religious headquarters of the community and since then meetings have been held in Kalikut, Bangalore and Sholapur.
The Ahmadiya Jamat has planned similar meetings all over the country by the end of the year. The meeting scheduled in Hyderabad was to be addressed by Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the present and fifth 'Khalifa' of the community, from his base in London.
The anti-Ahmadiya protest meeting of Muslims was significant from another point of view. It brought different schools of thought and sects together, although they are often at loggerheads over each other's beliefs.
Among the organisations represented were Jamat-e-Islami, Anjuman-e-Qadaria, Anjuman-e-Mehdvia, Sunni Jamat, Shia and Mehdvi groups along with MIM, Tameer-e-Millat and Tableeghi Jamat. One has never seen such an array of Muslim religious leaders coming together on the same platform in the past.
Theologians claim that Ahmadiyas do not accept the two basic tenets of Islam: Belief in the one-ness of god and acceptance of Mohammed as the last prophet of god. "If anybody deviates from these two basic tenets of Islam he cannot be called a Muslim and he cannot claim to be a Muslim," says Hameeduddin Aauqil Hussami, a renowned theologian in Andhra Pradesh. "That is why Qadianis cannot be treated as Muslims nor should they call themselves Muslims. It is a historical fact that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad had claimed to be a prophet and it directly collides with the very basis of Islam."
Mr Asaduddin Owaisi, Member of Parliament elected to the Lok Sabha from Hyderabad and senior leader of the MIM, says that in a democracy everybody is free to conduct a meeting and practice his or her religious beliefs. "We will not have any objection if Qadianis do it in the name of their own religion instead of misusing the name of Islam and Muslims. Like every institution has its intellectual property right, every religion has its own identity. If somebody practices religious beliefs which are contradictory to Islam and yet insists on being called a Muslim, nobody can accept it," he says.
But Ahmadiya community leaders reject the criticism as "allegations". Inam Ghouri, Nazir-e-Aala or the head of Ahmadia Jamat in India, insists, "It is all one-sided propaganda and our position is not being understood correctly. We believe that Hazrat Mohammed was the last prophet, Islam is the last religion and Quran is the last book of Allah. We only say that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad was an Imam, a Mehdi (the guided one) sent by Allah to reform those Muslims who have gone astray from the right path. Even Hazrat Mohammed had predicted that a Mehdi would come to bring Muslims to the right path. Others also believe in it, but they are still waiting for him (Mehdi). We say he has already come."
Muslim leaders have also targeted the Qadianis on other counts. They allege that the Ahmadiya movement was essentially a creation of the British during the freedom movement to sabotage it by creating religious differences among Muslims. After partition, a large number of Ahmadiyas migrated to Pakistan, but from there too they were hounded out.
An organised campaign was launched in Pakistan under the leadership of Syed Abul Aala Moududi, a prominent scholar and founder of Jamat-e-Islami, to have the Qadianis declared non-Muslims. Recently, several Qadiani students were expelled from a medical college in Pakistani Punjab on similar grounds.
Strangely, two senior Communist leaders -- CPI(M) MP P Madhu and CPI national secretary P Sudhakar Reddy -- who had been invited by the Ahmadiya jamat to address the Hyderabad meeting dissociated themselves from the event and issued statements to the Urdu Press, saying they had "not been aware of the true identity of the Qadianis". Mr Sudhakar Reddy added, "I accepted the invitation thinking it was a programme of Muslim minority." The Communists stepped back because they are competing with the MIM for the Muslim votes of Hyderabad.
As for the Ahmadiyas, the events in Hyderabad have come as a big shock. "We are already facing persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia. We were proud that in secular India we were free from any oppression. But if the same thing happens to us here, where will we go?" asked Inam Ghouri.
