School teacher shot dead by suspected Naxalites

Mangalore, May 16: A school teacher was shot dead by suspected Naxalites in Hebri in Udupi district of Karnataka today, a senior police official said.

The teacher Bhoja Shetty's nephew Shekhar was injured in the attack, IGP (Western Range) A M Prasad told reporters.

The incident took place on the eve of the second phase of Assembly elections in which constituencies in 10 districts, including Udupi, go to the polls.

The Naxalites had appealed to the people in Udupi and neighbouring districts to boycott the polls.

Police said elaborate security arrangements had been made for smooth conduct of the elections.
