ஷியா பிரிவினர் மீது யேமன் அரசாங்கமும் சவுதி அரசாங்கமும் நடத்தும் அடக்குமுறைகளை எதிர்த்து ஆயுதம் தாங்கிய ஷியா பிரிவினர் "believing youth" என்ற பெயரில் போராளிகள் உருவாக்கியிருக்கிறார்கள்.

இந்த போராளிகளை கொல்ல ராணுவம் அதிவேக விமானங்கள் மூலம் இவர்கள் தங்கியிருக்கும் சவுதி அரேபியா யேமன் எல்லையில் இருக்கும் மலைகளை தாக்கி வருகிறது.

ஏராளமான ஷியா பெண்களும் குழந்தைகளும் இப்படிப்பட்ட கண்மூடித்தாக்குதல்களால் உயிரிழந்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

ஷியா பிரிவினர் இதனை இனப்படுகொலை என்று கூறி கடுமையாக எதிர்க்கிறார்கள்.

Yemen conflict forced up to 5,000 families to flee homes

Sana'a - Up to 5,000 families have fled their homes amid fighting between army troops and Shiite rebels in a volatile region of Yemen that borders Saudi Arabia, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Monday. "An estimated number of 4,200 to 5,000 families have fled the fighting," Eman Moankar, a spokeswoman for the ICRC in Yemen, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Fierce battles between the army and armed followers of the outlawed Shiite group 'Believing Youth' have been underway in remote mountainous areas of the northern province of Saada since late last December.

Residents say the army has been using fighter jets and artillery to bombard areas controlled by the rebels, whom authorities accuse of trying to topple the republican regime and establish an Islamic state.

Moankar said some of the displaced had settled in areas close to the Saudi border, north of the provincial city of Saada that is located about 230 kilometres north of the capital Sana'a, while others sought refuge in areas near Saada city.

The displaced, mostly women and children, were either staying with host families or in tent shelters provided by the ICRC and its local partner, the Yemeni Red Crescent Society (YRCS), Moankar said.

"Others decided to stay in their villages in areas affected by the conflict to safeguard their homes and properties," she noted.

The ICRC and the YRCS had joined forces to ensure that the most urgent needs of those affected by the fighting were met, Moankar said.

So far, the ICRC has provided around 3,272 families with 1,000 tents, groundsheets, jerry-cans, mattresses, blankets and soap.

The ICRC spokeswoman said the agency's teams had gained access only to the Saada city and its surroundings, including some groupings of displaced people, but teams from the YRCS had accessed most of the affected areas.

"However, due to security restraints, the teams are sometimes temporarily unable to reach certain areas," she said, adding that the ICRC was "concerned about the fate of civilians who are affected by the armed confrontations in the region of Saada."

The ICRC has urged parties to the conflict to respect the life and dignity of civilians and ensure their safety and the safety of the prisoners, detainees and wounded, who were no longer part of the hostilities.

The Believing Youth group was established by Shiite cleric Hussein Badruddin al-Houthi in mid-2004, shortly before he was killed in clashes with the army in September 2004.

Waves of confrontations between the rebels and the army since, has left more around 1,800 government troops and unknown number of rebels dead, according to official figures.

Government officials were recently quoted as accusing Iran and Libya of financing the rebels,Both states have, however, denied this.

Force will not end Yemen revolt, rebel leader warns

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- A Yemeni MP whose family has been leading a deadly three-year-old uprising among the Zaidi minority warned Sunday that force would not end the revolt, in an interview with Al Jazeera channel.

"The government always promotes a military solution, and we have said that the military choice cannot solve the issue," Yahia Badreddin Al Huthi told the Qatar-based news channel from his base in Germany.

"Not even if it lasts 400 years or 500 years of fighting and jihad [holy war]," added Huthi, whose Shiite-offshoot community is caught in fierce fighting with security forces in Yemen's northern mountains.

Hundreds of people have died since the rebellion erupted in 2004 - including Huthi's brother Hussein who led the rebels.

"[Fighting will continue] until there is freedom and dignity, or death in a dignified way," Huthi said.

He strongly rejected claims by the Yemeni government that the rebels were receiving aid from abroad.

"Had we had an external support, our fighters would have reached by now the gates of Sanaa," he said.

Yemen's new Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Mujawar charged in an interview this month that Libya and "possibly" Iran have helped the Zaidi rebels.

He added that force was the only way to end the uprising.

The rebels reject as illegitimate the current republican regime that seized power in a 1962 coup, overthrowing a Zaidi imamate.
