Kashmiri pandits to revive shrines’ glory
Kavita Suri
JAMMU, July 4: In its endeavour to rebuild the damaged Hindu shrines of displaced Kashmiri pandits that have been encroached upon in Kashmir Valley, the All-Parties Migrant Coordination Committee, an apex body of displaced Kashmiri Pandits, will perform two yajnas.
After 18 years, the yajnas will be performed at two important Hindu shrines, Sagam in Kokarnag and Kulgam, in south Kashmir. Recently, the AMPCC celebrated the Mela Khanbaran festival at Tripur Sundari shrine, Devsar in south Kashmir. It was reopened after 17 years. Hundreds of Pandits and Kashmiri Muslims in their thousands participated. Rebuilt by the Army and local Muslims in 2002 after the shrine was set afire by militants, the temple was reopened for the festival from 20 to 24 June. The Tripursunderi shrine, also known as the Khanbaran temple, is one of the three important Vaishnavite shrines, besides Ganderbani, the Tulmulla-based Kheerbhawani and the Munzgam (Kulgam) shrine in Kashmir Valley. Hundreds of Hindu temples have either been gutted by the militants or have collapsed with neglect as the Kashmiri Pandits were forced to flee the valley in 1990 when militancy started. Now, Kashmiri pandit organisations are trying to renovate and reopen the shrines so that members of their displaced families can revisit the temples scattered all over the Valley. Mr Vinod Pandit, APMCC chairman, said yajnas and functions will be held in coordination with the respective temple committees of the area on 21 July at Kulgam and 28 July at Sagam. The yajnas will be performed with the help of local Army units headed by Brigadier KS Rana, besides material support from members of the Hindu and Muslim communities. The first yajna will be performed at the Kulwagisharee temple in Kulgam on 21 July, 6 pm onwards.
The second yajna will be performed at Sagam, for which devotees will start from Jammu on 27 July, participate in the yajna the next day and return to Jammu on 30 July. The committee, Mr Pandit said, will organise many such havans or yajnas in the damaged shrines in the valley to preserve the unique culture of Kashmiri pandits till their return becomes possible on their own terms.
