Hindu temple: An architectural marvel
16 May, 2007

GABORONE - The building of a P3 million Botswana Hindu Charities Trust (BHCT) temple in Block 8 has given the area a new look that attracts many.

The cream-white and peach church building is undoubtedly the best of its kind in town and the Southern Region as whole. Some call it a palace, while some call it a castle, but the Hindus look at it as a temple.

In an interview, the project coordinator Kuppuswami Bakthavathsalu said the building, which was designed by Mr Muthiah Sthapathi, a well-know temple designer in India is the first of its kind in Southern Africa.

He said the church is unique as the construction was done following the traditional Indian temple architecture, which is over thousand years old and found in the Southern part of India only.

In addition, he said a local architect Sharad Mishalkar was engaged to guide the local construction company that was given the project.

He explained that the construction of project started in 2003 while the embellishment in September 2005, saying the embellishments were done by 10 artisans from India.

The temple has attracted on-lookers with its standing colourful towers. The towers are not just ordinary towers but are different sculptures that tell different stories about the Hindu religion.

The temple has four different entrances but members are allowed to use one main entrance that has the tallest tower while others are used during special occasions.

The temple has different cubicles to be used for meditation, and a double door cubicle for their God or deity. Already there are different colourful statues or the deities erected at temple and some are expected to arrive in June.

The project co-coordinator said they hope tourists will come and have a view of the temples sculptures and statues free of charge.

In addition, he said the temple is open to all, saying people will only be expected to pay for prayers.

The temple will be officially opened on September 16. BOPA
