BAGHDAD, Oct 2 (KUNA) -- Suicide bombers struck Shiite worshippers gathering in two mosques celebrating the end of the Ramadan fasting month in Baghdad on Thursday, killing and injuring more than 70 people, a government security source said.

A suicide car bomber killed nine and wounded 30 at a Shiite assembly hall in the Zafaraniya district, while a teenage boy blew himself up at a mosque in New Baghdad, killing 12 and wounding 26, the source added.

Both districts are mainly-Shiite areas in the east of the capital.

In the Zafaraniya strike, the bomber drove a Mercedes into an Iraqi police vehicle guarding a well-protected area around the mosque and triggered the explosion, the source said.

In New Baghdad, a poor Shiite suburb of high-rise apartments, witnesses described the bomber as a boy of about 14 years old.
He stepped into a crowd wearing an explosive belt and blew himself up.
