UPA draws flak on move to set up States reorganisation panel

Omer Farooq | Hyderabad

Speculations that the United Progressive Alliance Government has decided to constitute a second State Reorganisation Commission (SRC) to look into the demands for a separate Telangana and Vidarbha States in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra and trifurcation of Uttar Pradesh respectively have triggered of a political storm in the State.

While some sections within the Congress have welcomed the proposal, the pro-Telangana parties and Congressmen have come out strongly against the move. Taking the lead in condemning the reported decision, which is yet to be formally announced, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K Chandrasekhara Rao warned of serious consequences. He warned the Congress party that the people of Telangana would revolt against the move. "The people of Telangana will never forgive the Congress for this betrayal", he said.

The TRS has been opposing the second SRC on the grounds that the demand for Telangana was very old and the first SRC headed by Fazle Ali had supported it. Chandrasekhara Rao said the issue of Telangana was also included in the common minimum programme of the UPA and the President had also assured Parliament in this regard.

The BJP, which is also categorically supporting the idea of dividing the State and creation of Telangana, has criticised the reported move. Senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters in Vijaywada on Wednesday that the move was nothing but an attempt to hoodwink the people of the State. He stressed the BJP was for the division of Andhra Pradesh into two States.

The reports of second SRC have come at a time when the Telangana Regional Congress coordination committee has become active once again and its leaders have decided to go to Delhi to represent to party president Sonia Gandhi that in action on Telangana would be costly for the party in the next year's elections. Congressmen from the region are worried that the formation of second SRC would be seen by the people only a delaying tactics, as it will take years for the Commission to complete its work.

Congress leaders from the region including V Hanumantha Rao and KR Amos said that the move would cause immense damage to the Congress and give edge to the pro Telangana parties like the TRS in the coming elections.

The CPI(M) on its part hailed the move. Party MP Madhu said his party would strive for an integrated State as a smaller State was not going solve under development.
