BANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to hold a convention of Muslims in the State in February as part of its exercise to woo their support ahead of the Assembly elections.

The BJP National Minorities’ Morcha President and former Union Minister, Shahnavaz Hussain, told presspersons here on Monday that about 25,000 Muslims were expected to participate in the proposed convention.

The party was yet to decide whether to hold the convention in Bangalore or in any other cities of the State, he noted.

He said minorities, especially Muslims, were moving towards the BJP after the party’s victory in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh as well as declaration of senior leader L.K. Advani as party’s prime ministerial candidate.

In fact, Muslims had rallied behind the party in Gujarat elections, he said.

He appealed to the minorities in Karnataka to support the party in the ensuing elections to the Assembly.

Mr. Hussain said himself as well as the party national minority morcha would now focus their attention on Karnataka.

Pointing out that 35 minority members had been elected as members to various municipal corporations in the State on the BJP ticket, he said the minorities were impressed with the performance of the former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa.

He made it clear that the BJP would not appease minorities. But it would give them equal opportunities and power unlike other parties.

He said after the BJP’s victory in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, several political parties had showed interest in forging an alliance with the BJP in the next general elections to Parliament. But he desisted from naming them and only said that talks were being held with those parties.

He evaded queries on whether the BJP would still insist on uniform civil code and only said that the party would decide its poll agenda after a thorough discussion with its leaders.

Later, addressing a convention of party’s minority wing workers, he took exception to political parties, especially the Congress, describing BJP as “communal.”

Launching a counter attack on the Congress, he alleged that the Congress was the real enemy of the Muslims.

“The Congress is responsible for the backwardness of Muslims as it only used them as vote bank instead of showing commitment to their development,” he alleged.

Mr. Hussain expressed disagreement with the Sachar Committee report on the socio-educational and employment status of Muslims. He termed it as an effort by the Congress to woo Muslims ahead of Uttar Pradesh elections.

Poll agenda

With the Bangalore International Airport nearing completion just when the Assembly elections are round the corner in Karnataka, the political parties seem to be out to use it in their poll agenda. The BJP on Monday tried to take the credit for setting up the airport. BJP leader and the former Union Civil Aviation Minister Shahnavaz Hussain said on Monday that the BJP-led NDA Government, especially himself, had played a crucial role in clearing the airport project. “BJP leader B.S. Yeddyurappa will inaugurate the new airport as chief minister and I will make it a point to attend that function in my capacity as the former Union Civil Aviation Minister,” he said.
