Here the issue is not if saddam go help from communists or not, but what the relationship with USA and Saddam in the history. After all, Russia did not invade into Iraq, but US did in the name of WMD and Osama. Ironically Osama got helped by USA during Afgan proxy war, and WMDs were used only by one country throughout the history, USA.

Saddam execution justified: Shia Board
New Delhi: The All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB) on Saturday took a rather strong stand on the execution of former Iraq president Saddam Hussein.
Terming Saddam's execution as "justified", the AISPLB added that Saddam was tried by a court of justice and punished for his heinous crimes.
"Saddam should not be seen as a Muslim as he was not following true Islam," the president of AISPLB's Mumbai chapter, Sayed Mohammed Nawab, said in an official release.
Nawab said that Saddam was a tyrant and many other tyrants in Islamic history are prostrated by "Saddami Muslims" who destroyed cities and killed millions of people whom they called kafirs, (unbelievers). These people had imposed their own kind of terrorist Islam, he added.
"These are the kind of Muslims behind Saddam, praising his inhuman acts," Nawab said.
