The parents confronted the trustee, but he denied the incident had taken place
A six-year-old student of Islamic School in Shahpur Mill Compound was allegedly paraded naked by her class teacher because her handwriting was not good enough. She was later locked up in a washroom and made to clean the toilet bowls.

Outraged parents of the class I student, who came to know about the incident from her classmate, confronted school trustee Iqbal Patel. However, Patel vehemently denied such an incident had taken place at school. The girl’s parents filed an FIR with Shahpur police following which the teacher was arrested on Monday evening.

Incidentally, in January, parents had accused the all-girls school of forcing their children to clean toilets.

‘HER CLASSMATE TOLD US’
The girl’s father Sharavar Sheikh told Mirror, “Our child is very enthusiastic about going to school. A few days ago, when she started making excuses for not attending classes, we sensed something was wrong. Although we asked her the reason, she made vague excuses and dodged the issue. It was through a classmate of hers that we came to know about the incident. We are appalled.”

They allege another girl was also paraded along with their daughter.

According to the girl’s mother Samina, class teacher Zebabanu found her daughter’s handwriting illegible and decided to punish her in the most “horrendous” manner.

“She stripped my child naked and paraded her in front of the class. As if that was not enough, she locked her up in the school washroom and made her clean the toilet bowls. Zeba warned my daughter not to tell us about the punishment unless she wanted to endure more,” says an outraged Samina.
When trustee refused to take action against the accused teacher, angry parents vandalised his office and manhandled him

TRAUMATISED
The parents claim that their child was also beaten up by the class teacher.
“My daughter was so traumatised that she would start sobbing at the mention of going to school. It was only after we assured her nothing would happen to her that she opened up and told us what the class teacher did to her,” says Sheikh, the girl’s father.

The Sheikhs came to know of the incident on Saturday. However, by then the school was over for the day. So the distraught parents met the school principal Rehana Patel and the trustee on Monday.

‘TRUSTEE REFUSED TO BELIEVE’
“The trustee refused to believe us. He kept saying that nothing of this sort could ever happen in his school,” says Samina.

Soon other parents who heard about the incident gathered outside the trustee’s office and demanded that action be taken against the teacher. When Patel refused to pay heed to their demand, angry parents vandalised the trustee’s office and manhandled him.

The Shahpur police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. They took away Iqbal Patel for security reasons.

“When we told Patel about the incident, he kept us waiting but didn’t take any action. This forced us to file a complaint with Shahpur police,” says Samina.
Trustee Iqbal Patel (seated) says the teacher had only issued a threat

‘TEACHER ARRESTED’

Senior Police Inspector S B Gohil said, “We have arrested the teacher on the basis of the complaint registered by the parents of the six-year-old victim.”

But trustee Iqbal Patel says, “No girl in our school was disrobed or locked in the bathroom. The teacher was merely issuing empty threats so that the children took studies seriously.”

Education minister Ramanlal Vora told Mirror, “We’ll have to find out who exactly governs the school — the state education department or some other board. I will find out what action can be taken.”

‘AUTOCRATIC TRUSTEE’
District Education Officer R I Patel said, “This school is run by the minority community and has its own rules. It is not registered with the education department. We have come to know about the incident but as the school doesn’t come under our purview, we can’t take action. The parents will have to lodge an FIR.”

According to sources, Islamic School is run by the Pir Sultan Trust, but it is not registered with the Charity Commissioner.

“When the school was established, Patel, an NRI then, became the president of the trust. There were four other trustees — Bashir Nagori, Mohammed Khan Pathan, Rasool Khan Pathan and Mohammed Iqbal Kagdi. When these four trustees tried to get the trust registered, Patel got them removed. They have even filed a case against Patel with the Charity Commissioner but the case is pending,” says the source.

‘STRICT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN’
Bashir Nagori says, “This is not the first incident where a child has been mistreated by the teachers. Strict action should be taken against Zeba.”

President of the trust Hussain Sheikh said, “We are aware of the incident and it is very unfortunate. The teacher should be suspended. Patel has been governing the school as per his rules and that is where the problem lies. He doesn’t listen to the other trustees.”

He added: “In a meeting held two months ago, we had removed his wife Rehana Patel from the post of the principal. At that time, Patel threw the school keys at us and left the meeting in a huff. However, the next day he reached the school early and prevented other trustees from entering the premises. He instructed the peon to make sure the trustees are unable to enter the school.”

WHAT SCHOOL PRINCIPALS SAY:
1) Zenna Mohammed, Principal, F D School
It is really shameful that the school authorities are doing nothing despite repeated incidents of students being harassed. Such incidents affect the students psychologically. They start hating the school and the teachers. In this particular case, the teacher should be suspended immediately.
2) Hitendra Trivedi, Principal, C N VidhyalayaThe concerned teacher should be suspended and blacklisted. Such teachers suffer from psychological problems and it is the students who become the victims of their frustrations. In fact, this teacher should voluntarily quit the teaching profession.

3) Nirav Thakkar, Principal, A G SchoolIf the allegations are true, then it is very unfortunate. The school authorities should take such complaints very seriously and address them promptly. Otherwise, they escalate out of proportion.

PREVIOUS INCIDENTS AT THE SCHOOL
1) In January, parents had confronted the trustee for forcing their children to clean school toilets. But trustee Iqbal Patel had claimed the allegations were baseless and intended at maligning the reputation of the school. The parents had not filed any police complaint fearing risk to their children’s education.

2) On March 23, Mohammed Imran Haji filed a complaint with Shahpur police against a class III teacher alleging she made his daughter wash three toilets because her homework was incomplete. The parents complained to trustee Iqbal Patel but he turned a deaf ear. Instead, Patel filed a police complaint against Haji.
