Singaporean says on hunger strike to support Malaysian Hindus
10 hours ago
SINGAPORE (AFP) — A Singaporean artist said Monday he had begun a hunger strike to seek the release of Malaysian Hindu rights activists detained under a tough security law.
"At 9:00 am (0100 GMT) I began," 23-year-old Seelan Palay told AFP from near the front gate of the Malaysian High Commission.
Palay said he would drink water but not eat during the hunger strike, which will last five days -- one day for each detained member from Malaysia's Hindu Rights Action Force.
The five are being held under Malaysia's Internal Security Act, which allows for indefinite detention without trial.
"I'll sleep on the ground on a straw mat," Palay said, adding he was wearing a sign around his neck that read: "Give them fair trial."
The activists were detained after they enraged the government in November by mounting a mass rally alleging discrimination against Indians in Malaysia, where the majority are ethnic Malay Muslims.
Police used tear gas, water cannon and baton charges to break up the street protest by at least 8,000 people. Palay said he attended that rally.
In a statement released before the hunger strike, Palay called for global pressure on the Malaysian government to free the five and to prove allegations against them in open court.
"In line with the greater focus on human rights in ASEAN today ... we surely cannot turn a blind eye to this matter," his statement said.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) last month signed a charter calling for the establishment of a regional human rights body.
Singapore currently chairs the 10-member ASEAN and Malaysia is a member.

House Church run by Salem Voice Ministries demolished by Muslim extremists
By Michael Ireland
An underground house church of Salem Voice Ministries was demolished by Muslim extremists at Sunnam Potty in Malabar, India on December 29.
A mob of 10 to 15 people came by cars and vans with spades, pick axes, iron bars and other tools and weapons and totally demolished the church on Saturday night. The attackers are suspected to be activists of SIMI (Students Islamic Movement of India).
In the last few months around 50 people have been attending the church every week for worship services. The majority were individual Muslim youngsters from various families.
A baptism service was held early on Saturday morning, during which eight young people and three couples were baptized. Although it was a secret service, the news somehow leaked out. It is believed that might have provoked the extremists to demolish the church.
The church building was leased from a believer’s family without any rent. The family that owns the building lives a distance away from the churh location. In recent days they have been threatened by unknown people for giving this house to be used for prayer and worship.
Pastor Mildad and his family, who are ministering in this area, are facing death threats.
Pastor Paul Ciniraj, Director of the Salem Voice Ministries, visited the demolished church. He condemned the incident and requested prayer for the pastor and his family, the owner of the house and his family, and the believers who gather there.

Algeria: Islamic MPs ask for action against Christian missionaries
Algiers, 31 Dec. (AKI) - Lawmakers from the Algerian Islamic political party of al-Nahda have asked the government to intervene to slow down "the activities of Christian missionaries in the country".
Algerian MP Muhammad Hudeibi was quoted as saying this in the local el-Khabar newspaper.
"We want the government to cut down this type of activity because the expansion of evangelisation in Algeria has become an important problem and is not marginal as some think it is," said Hudeibi.
For some years, the local media in Algeria have reported on the activities of a number of missionaries, particularly those from evangelical and Protestant churches, who have succeeded in converting entire Algerian families to Christianity, particularly those who come from the eastern area of Kabilia.
"We condemn the government's silence with regard to this phenomenon," said the Algerian MP.
"We are collecting the signatures of other lawmakers in order to begin a discussion in parliament on this problem," he said.
"All 11 parliamentarians of al-Nahda have been mobilised, but we are convinced that others will also help us."
The Islamic party also asked the Algerian ulema or Islamic scholars and imams to give their opinion on the issue of Christian evangelism.

Fatima and Mansour Still Have Hope, Says NSHR
Ebtihal Mubarak, Arab News
JEDDAH, 10 December 2007 — Fatima, the forcefully divorced wife and perhaps the most spoken about Saudi woman in the past two years, knows nothing of the International Human Rights Day, which is taking place today.
For seven months, Fatima, 34, has been living in a women’s refuge — with her two-year-old son Sulaiman — after agreeing to leave prison.
In a highly publicized case, a Saudi judge nullified Fatima’s marriage to Mansour Al-Timani, 37, on July 20, 2005. The court decision was issued after Fatima’s half brothers filed a divorce case saying that Mansour had lied about his tribal background.
However, by that time Fatima and Mansour were already parents of two children. Fatima remains in the refuge, and refuses to return into the custody of the men who arranged for her marriage to be nullified.
Hussein Al-Sharif, head of the National Society of Human Rights’ (NSHR) Western Province branch and a law professor at King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah, said that although a higher court last January upheld the decision to nullify the marriage there is still a way out.
“The only legal way to end this family’s misery is for the king to intervene by asking the Supreme Judicial Council, the highest judicial authority in the Kingdom, to look at the case again,” he said.
Al-Sharif said that NSHR President Bandar Al-Hajjar sent an official letter to the Royal Court last September asking for the case to be reviewed. The NSHR provided along with the letter two studies, based on Islamic law, concluding that the divorce is invalid.
The studies have been undertaken by Adnan Al-Zahrani, a researcher in Islamic law, and Bassam Al-Bassam, a counselor at the Court of Cassation in Makkah.
The two studies, copies of which have been obtained by Arab News, provide sayings from the Prophet (peace be upon him) as well as Islamic scholars negating the Al-Jouf judge’s decision to nullify Mansour and Fatima’s marriage.
Both scholars agreed that if the woman’s legal guardian represented the bride during the original wedding contract, then other members of the family have no right to object to the marriage based on compatibility. Both studies stress that it is only the wife who can decide whether she wants her marriage to be annulled. Fatima married Mansour with the approval of her father.
However, for more than two years Fatima continues to yearn to be with Mansour. Since Arab News initially met her in November 2006 at Dammam Prison, Fatima continues to say, “I want to go back to my husband. I will never submit to anyone who wants to ruin my family.”
It seems that as the time passes, Fatima is becoming more resilient about her case. At the refuge, Fatima looks after her son Sulaiman and patiently awaits news on her case.
She is limited in how much she is allowed to venture out and is monitored. “I can hardly go outside and shop. If that happens, then I’m not allowed to go alone. The social workers say they fear my half brothers would see me outside,” said Fatima.
Since moving to the shelter, Fatima and Sulaiman have not seen Mansour nor Sulaiman’s elder sister Noha.
Last year Sulaiman celebrated his first birthday in prison and this Eid he will be at the shelter, which is more like an orphanage.
“Sometimes, I look at my son and wish I could get into his brain and know what this two-year-old could be possibly thinking?” said Fatima.
Fatima’s husband, Mansour, who lives temporarily in Riyadh with Noha, has not lost hope either. “I really wish our case reaches the council; if it did I’m sure they will rule for us getting back together,” he said.
In the same way that Fatima is suffering, Mansour is also. In July he was made to sign two gag orders by Dammam police preventing him from speaking to the press. When being made to sign the second gag order, Mansour was also detained with Noha.
After two years of separation, Mansour and Fatima have not lost hope of reuniting. “She is still my wife,” Mansour told Arab News, breaking the gag order.
“The best thing that happened to me is having children from Mansour. He will always be my husband and the father of my children,” said Fatima.

Police firing kills four in riot-hit Orissa district
Bhubaneswar, December 28, 2007

Five days after communal clashes broke out over Christmas celebrations in Orissa's Kandhamal district in eastern India, tension persisted in the area with four people feared dead in police firing and the government finally deciding to order a judicial inquiry.
Police said on Friday that the core trouble area continued to be the Christian dominated Brahmanigaon village, about 150 km from the district headquarters of Phulbani and about 200 km fm the state capital.
On Thursday afternoon, hundreds of residents burnt some Hindu houses. Police rushed in to rescue the villagers and brought them to the station, which was also attacked.
A mob of about 500 people opened fire at the police station, a district police official told IANS. To disperse the mob, police opened fire. In the gunbattle that went on for more than an hour, at least four people were killed and three police officials injured.
The exact number of deaths is yet to be ascertained because all communication to the village has been disrupted, the official said. The roads have been blocked and telephone lines have been down too.
Leading Oriya daily The Sambad put the toll at nine, saying that four were killed in police firing and five in clashes.
The place has been a tinderbox since Monday, when trouble broke out in Brahmanigaon, which has a population of about 4,000.
Hindus and Christians clashed over Christmas celebrations. Trouble escalated in the area when some people attacked the vehicle of local Hindu leader Swami Laxmananda Saraswati near Daringbadi when he was on his way to perform a yagna in Brahmanigaon.
Dozens of churches and prayer houses were burnt, vehicles were torched and houses of both Hindus and Christians attacked in the days that followed.
At least one person died and dozens injured in the clashes.
Kandhamal district, which has a population of about 600,000 including 150,000 Christians, is considered one of the most communally sensitive regions in the state with numerous clashes reported between both Hindus and Christians in the past.

The Pakistan government's belief that al-Qa'eda was responsible for the attack on Benazir Bhutto comes as little surprise given her public commitment to root out Islamist extremists if elected prime minister.
Miss Bhutto just seconds before her death
Those who carried out the attack were likely to have been volunteers with groups linked to the so-called Pakistani Taliban, who were trained by elements of al-Qa'eda.
But the expanding network of al-Qa'eda and associated groups in Pakistan owes much to the contradictory policies of successive governments which have favoured some terrorists while hunting down others.
Even Miss Bhutto allowed extremist groups to flourish during her last stint as prime minister in the 1990s. The Taliban in neighbouring Afghanistan received support from her government, while Pakistani Islamist fighters were given backing as they tried to wrest control of the divided region of Kashmir from India.
However, it is President Pervez Musharraf who has done most to undermine efforts to combat terrorism and turned Pakistan into the epicentre for al-Qa'eda, the Taliban and other groups.
Today, Islamist extremists in Pakistan - rather than in Iraq or Afghanistan - are the main threat to global stability. Since 2004 every fatal or foiled terrorist plot in Europe and elsewhere, has had its origins in the tribal areas of Pakistan.
The al-Qa'eda campaign in Pakistan is being spearheaded by the Pakistani Taliban, who in recent months have captured large tracts of territory in the Pashtun tribal belt in the north-west.
Lately, they have occupied the Swat valley, just over 60 miles from Islamabad and the centre of the country's tourist trade.
The Pakistani Taliban are now a major force in every city in the North West Frontier Province.
They are led by Baitullah Mehsud, who warned in October that his suicide bombers were waiting to kill Miss Bhutto when she returned home from exile.
The Pakistani interior ministry has released the transcript of what it claimed to be a telephone conversation between Mehsud and another militant, in which he congratulated a "tremendous effort" by "really brave boys" in the assassination of Miss Bhutto.
Benazir Bhutto's shoes lie on the floor of her vehicle's bloodstained interior
The Pakistani Taliban are mostly Pashtun tribesmen who were influenced by al-Qa'eda after they helped its leaders seek refuge following September 11, 2001.
At the behest of the US, Pakistan's army conducted a policy of capturing or killing Arab members of al-Qa'eda. However, it left the Afghan Taliban alone, as it distrusted the regime of President Hamid Karzai, which it accused of being pro-Indian.
The military wanted to keep the Afghan Taliban as a potential proxy force. And after 2004 the army even gave up the chase against al-Qa'eda, once it realised that the US focus was on Iraq rather than on Afghanistan.
The Pakistani Taliban became more dangerous after they began to train militants from Islamist extremist groups in the nation's cities. It is these educated urban militants who, it is believed, exploded the bombs that killed 134 in Karachi as Miss Bhutto returned home from exile in October.
The Pakistani Taliban has also used the Pashtun tribal network to develop well-placed supporters inside the army and the Pakistani intelligence services.
Several recent suicide bombings which have killed hundreds of army personnel in barracks within Pakistan's cities could only have taken place with inside knowledge.
The US has given Pakistan £5 billion since 2001, three quarters of which has been spent on the country's military.
In the future, it will need to link such aid to targets on dealing with terrorists if its money is not to be squandered.
This is a translation from the raw transcript of the alleged telephone conversation between Baitullah Mehsud, a senior al-Qa'eda leader, and another militant, which the Pakistan interior ministry said had been intercepted after the assassination.
Maulvi Sahib (MS): Asalaam Aleikum (Peace be with you).
Baitullah Mehsud (BM): Waaleikum Asalaam (And also with you).
MS: Chief, how are you?
BM: I am fine.
MS: Congratulations, I just got back during the night.
BM: Congratulations to you. Were they our men?
MS:: Yes, they were ours.
BM: Who were they?
MS: There was Saeed, there was Bilal from Badar and Ikramullah.
BM: The three of them did it?
MS: Ikramullah and Bilal did it.
BM: Then congratulations.
MS: Where are you? I want to meet you.
BM: I am at Makeen (town in the South Waziristan tribal region). Come over, I am at Anwar Shah's house.
MS: OK, I'll come.
BM: Don't inform their house for the time being.
MS: OK.
BM: It was a tremendous effort. They were really brave boys who killed her.
MS: Mashallah (Thank God). When I come I will give you all the details.
BM: I will wait for you. Congratulations, once again congratulations.
MS: Congratulations to you.
BM: Anything I can do for you?
MS: Thank you very much.
BM: Asalaam Aleikum.
MS: Waaleikum Asalaam.

MS:: Yes, they were ours.

Altaf Ansari, a senior member of the Harkat-ul-Jehad-al-Islami (HuJI) militant group wanted for carrying out the serial blasts in Uttar Pradesh in November, was arrested from a house in Baranagar area in Kolkata, the police said on Saturday.
"Ansari was living in a house on the Cossipore Road in Kolkata for quite some time. He was arrested around 2 pm on Friday in a joint operation of the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh police," Rajiv Kumar, Director General of Police (CID), told IANS.
"The STF of the Uttar Pradesh police had asked for help to capture the militant. A joint operation led to his arrest. He is being interrogated," Kumar said, adding that Ansari would be produced in the Alipur police court.
Answari, also known as Raju, is one of the most wanted militants who was involved in the November 23 serial blasts in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow, Varanasi and Faizabad court premises that killed over a dozen people and left injured more than 50.
On December 25, in a joint operation, the Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir police arrested two HuJI militants from Doda area of the Jammu region for their involvement in the blasts.
The two, identified as Sajjad and Tariq Kashmiri alias Akhthar, were arrested by the police forces of the two states along with sleuths of central security agencies.
The names of these militants, including Altaf, came up during the interrogation of HuJI militants Mohammed Khalid and Tariq, arrested by Uttar Pradesh police's Special Task Force and central security agencies on December 21.
The blasts were carried out after the militants received orders from their commanders in Jammu and Kashmir.
Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI), meaning Movement of Islamic Holy War, is a Sunni Islamic fundamentalist paramilitary organisation active in Bangladesh and India since the 1990s. It was banned in Bangladesh in 2005 and was earlier labelled a terrorist organisation by the US in the late 1990s.

NANDIGRAM: A day after chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee addressed the Nandigram villagers, his partymen on Thursday thrashed an elderly couple at Southkhali village for refusing to join a CPM rally. The couple — sympathisers of Bhumi Uchchhed Pratirodh Committee — had to be hospitalised.
However, CPM's Nandigram zonal committee secretary Ashok Bera said it was an "isolated and minor" incident. Asking his partymen not to treat Opposition members as enemies, Bera said, "We are trying to convince our supporters. But BUPC members are also creating trouble in many places. Opposition has a responsibility, too."
Thursday's incident pointed to the volatile nature of the situation at 'ground zero'. Said Ashok Munian, a BUPC member from Maheshpur village, "The CM is talking peace. But it must be translated at the ground level. We are still being threatened and assaulted by CPM cadres. How can peace return if such things continue?"
Meanwhile, cops and CRPF are carrying out raids to track arms and ammunition. "Fearing raids, people are dumping weapons in canals, bushes and then informing us," a senior police officer said.

'God signed the tsunami'

Colombo - God signed His name in the tsunami that battered Sri Lanka and other countries on December 26, and sent it as punishment because humans have been ignoring His laws, Sri Lankan Muslims say.
Proof, according to Mohamed Faizeen, manager of the Centre for Islamic Studies in Colombo, is a satellite picture taken seconds after the tsunami smashed into Sri Lanka's west coast near the town of Kalutara and as it was receding.
"This clearly spells out the name 'Allah' in Arabic," Faizeen said, pointing to the shape of the waves - a gigantic "E" complete with whorls and sidewaves that do indeed appear to combine to resemble the Arabic script for the name "Allah".
The picture was taken by the DigitalGlobe Quickbird satellite on December 26 at 10:20am local time, shortly after the moment of tsunami impact. It can be viewed at the website "Allah signed His name," Faizeen said. "He sent it as punishment. This comes from ignoring His laws."
He likened the tsunami to the Old Testament account of floods being sent by God in the time of Noah as punishment for those who had drifted from His ways.
He added that he had visited the mainly Muslim Ulvae, near the major town of Batticaloa, and found that a madrassa - an Islamic religious school - had been left untouched while 400 houses around it had been flattened with great loss of life.
The shorelines of many Asian countries hit by the waves had become playgrounds for Westerners and errant Muslims. Vices such as prostitution and drinking were rife, the cleric said.
"Allah first sends small punishments - like loss of business. If we ignore the warning, He sends bigger ones - loss of life. If we still ignore the warnings, the big punishments, like earthquakes and tsunamis will come."
Faizeen said areas of Sri Lanka mainly populated by Muslims were the hardest hit and that the waves were aimed at Muslims in Indonesia and Sri Lanka who he said had strayed from God's ways.
The island is around 70 percent Buddhist, 15 percent Hindu, 7.5 percent Muslim and 7.5 percent Christian.
Another Muslim leader, Muhammed Fawmey of the International Islamic Youth Front, said he too believed the tsunami was sent by God.
"He clearly signed His name in the waves," said Fawmey, who said the Arabic script in the waves had suddenly "appeared to me as in a vision" when he was staring at the satellite picture.
"The Koran says people can be punished through water or through fire," he added, referring to Islam's sacred scripture.
Scientists have a more rational explanation for the December 26 tsunami - an undersea earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale off the west coast of northern Sumatra.
"Near the source of submarine earthquakes, the seafloor is 'permanently' uplifted and down-dropped, pushing the entire water column up and down, the US Geological Survey says on its website.

Islamabad: Angry supporters of slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto took to the streets of Pakistani cities on Thursday. The unrest was predictably fiercest in Bhutto's native Sindh province and its capital, Karachi.
At least 10 people are killed in rioting in Karachi in the wake of the assassination.
"Police in Sindh have been put on red alert," said a senior police official. "We have increased deployment and are patrolling in all the towns and cities, as there is trouble almost everywhere," he added.
Reports said security was deteriorating in Karachi, where thousands poured on to the streets to protest. At least three banks, a government office and a post office were set on fire, a witness said.
Tyres were set on fire on many roads, and shooting and stone-throwing was reported in many places. Most shops and markets in the city were shut. At least 20 vehicles were torched in the central Sindh town of Hyderabad.
There were also small protests in Rawalpindi and the nearby capital, Islamabad. Protesters blocked roads with burning tyres and chanted slogans against President Pervez Musharraf in Muzaffarabad, capital of Pakistani Kashmir in the mountainous north.
Police said they had been ordered to block the main road between Punjab province and Sindh province, apparently to stop the movement of protesters. Disturbances were also reported in the southeastern city of Multan, although details were sketchy.
In the eastern city of Lahore, Bhutto party workers burnt three buses and damaged several other vehicles, police said. Trouble was reported from the interior of Sindh province, including the Bhutto ancestral home at Larkana, police said.
"The situation is not good in the interior of Sindh. A large number of people have come out on the roads in many cities to protest," said senior police official Fayyaz Leghari.

Pakistani sectarian clashes kill about 40 tribesmen
Thu Dec 27, 2007 2:59pm IST
PARACHINAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani authorities tried on Thursday to get warring Sunni and Shia Pashtun tribes to settle their differences after five days of clashes that have killed about 40 people, officials said.
About 150 people have been killed in the Kurram tribal region bordering Afghanistan since mid-November, fuelling volatility along the frontier where pro-Taliban and al Qaeda-linked militants are battling security forces.
The fighting had died down and the two sides had even agreed to a truce but it flared again at the weekend. Authorities said they were hoping peace could be restored at a meeting of tribal elders, known as a jirga.
"We have called a jirga, we're trying to defuse the situation," said political administrator Zahir-ul-Islam.
Sectarian violence has bedevilled Pakistan since the 1980s and Kurram has a long history of such clashes.
Most of the ethnic Pashtun tribesmen in Kurram are Shi'ites, although most Pashtuns on both sides of the border are Sunnis.
A Shia resident, shopkeeper Ali Asghar, said the Sunnis were getting help from Taliban militants.
"The fighting is still going on, we're fighting with the Taliban," said Asghar, speaking from a hospital in the region's main town, Parachinar, where he had taken three wounded relatives.
"There's been no government action against the militants," he said, adding that many people had fled from their homes. Military spokesman Major-General Waheed Arshad said there had been reports of both sides getting help from across the border in Afghanistan. About 40 people had been killed in recent days, he said.
Troops sent to the region in November were still there but there was a limit to how much they could do, he said.
"We are helping the local administration but basically it's the jirgas which are the ultimate solution," Arshad said.
"It's their tribes, their people. Unless they come to some sort of consensus or agreement, only deploying the military won't solve the problem, that's only temporary."
Separately, four boys, three of them brothers and the other a an uncle, were killed on Thursday when a grenade they found near a canal exploded, police said.
Police said it was unclear why a grenade had been dumped by the canal near the central city of Dera Ghazi Khan in Punjab province, but the area is near the border with Baluchistan province where nationalist militants have been fighting for autonomy for decades.

The gunman then blew himself up.
"At 6:16 p.m. she expired," Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto's party who was at Rawalpindi General Hospital, told The Associated Press.
At the hospital, her supporters began chanting "dog, Musharraf, dog," a reference to Pakistan's president, Pervez Musharraf.
The attack took place as Bhutto was leaving a political rally where she addressed thousands before the country's Jan. 8 parliamentary elections.
Bhutto twice served as prime minister of the Islamic nation between 1988 and 1996.
Oct. 18, she returned to Pakistan from an eight-year exile. During her triumphant arrival in Karachi, Pakistan, a suicide attacker blew himself up, killing more than 140 people. Bhutto escaped injury in that attack.
Bhutto has been the target of nine previous assassination attempts.

Karachi, Dec 26 (ANI): The Hindu community and Small Traders Union took out a rally against the kidnapping of children and people in Jacobabad district in Pakistans Sindh province on Tuesday.
They claimed the children were being kidnapped on a political basis as they all belonged to poor families.
The rally started from Hindu Panchayat hall and after passing through different roads reached the Jacobabad press club.
Lal Chand Seetlani, President Hindu Panchayat, said that during the elections many children were kidnapped from Jacobabad, and added that it was a conspiracy.
Akshay Kumar (10) was kidnapped near Petti Bazaar, one month ago, Fayaz Abro (5) was kidnapped from Dastagir colony, Gurya (5) was kidnapped from Quaid-i-Azam road and four Hindus Raj Kumar, Bahoo Lal, Shankar Kumar, Jaipal Das and one teacher Wazir Ali were kidnapped from Sultankot area from a passenger wagon, he claimed.
He told reporters that they had informed caretaker Prime Minister Mohammadmian Soomro about the kidnappings of Hindu people, who had assured that he would soon reach Jacobabad and would take up the matter.
A grand meeting would be held in which they would jointly announce the boycott of general elections, the Dawn quoted Seetlani, as saying.
They would also go on a token hunger strike at Sarafa bazaar chowk and threatened that if within 24 hours the children and men were not released from the clutches of kidnappers they would widen their protest till recovery of the hostages, he added. (ANI)

(ANI)

Muslims split on caste lines in this Bihar village

Kesaria (East Champaran), December 8:On Thursday, six huts belonging to Muslim families were set ablaze in Allehpur village of East Champaran district in Bihar. The accused are fellow Muslims from the same village. For over a year now, the Muslim population in the village is locked in a bitter caste war between the forward caste Saiyyads and backward caste Ansaris. And it was the Ansaris’ huts that were set ablaze, allegedly by some Saiyyads.

The differences have spilled over to the mosque too. The Ansaris have stopped offering prayers at the village mosque and built their own temporary mosque. “They treat us like upper caste Hindus treat Dalits. Though they allowed us inside the village mosque, they would push us and tell us to go to the back to pray. So we decided to have our own mosque,” says 75-year-old Yaseen Ansari.
But the Saiyyads claim that the land on which the Ansaris have built the mosque belongs to them. Both the sides have sought official intervention on the matter.
“Humlog jaat ke Saiyyad hain, Muslim ke Brahman hain (We are Saiyyads by caste, the Brahmins among Muslims,” says Saiyyad Mohammad Idris, a villager, addressing the Ansaris as lowly “Jolhas”.
According to locals, the differences began in April last year when a car carrying an Ansari bridegroom reportedly trampled over the graveyard of some Saiyyads’ ancestors. The situation has worsened now with the burning of the six huts belonging to Ansaris.
In an FIR, Saiyadda Khatun (60), one of those whose huts was burnt, has identified eight Saiyyad members. But the police have refrained from arresting them. “In her statement, she said she had not seen anyone. But in the FIR lodged later, she has identified eight persons. So we are investigating the matter,” said Ajay Kumar, Inspector, Kesaria police station.
District officials accuse local politicians of fanning the flames. The Pasmanda Muslim Mahaj headed by Ali Anwar, whose campaign for Muslim backward castes earned him a Rajya Sabha berth, commands a strong support base among the Ansaris of Allehpur.

Rare statues disappear
23/12/2007 14:14 - (SA)
Dhaka - Two rare Hindu statues of a major deity have disappeared from Bangladesh's main airport as they were about to be shipped to Paris for a museum exhibition, police said on Sunday.
The artefacts - two ancient statues of the Hindu god Vishnu - were in a packed carton that went missing from Zia International Airport in the capital Dhaka late on Saturday, deputy commissioner of police Khandaker Rafiqul Islam said.
They were part of 188 rare cultural items being sent to the Guimet Museum in the French capital for a major international exhibition on Bangladesh history and culture, he said.
"We have detained 11 men from the air cargo operator and airport staff for interrogation," he said, adding the authorities have also suspended further shipment of the remaining artefacts.
Majority-Muslim Bangladesh was first created as East Pakistan following the subcontinent's independence from British rule in 1947. It won independence from Pakistan with aid from Hindu-majority India during a war in 1971.
The rare statues represent a deity known as the preserver of the universe and were selected from five state-run museums after an agreement between the French embassy and the government's cultural affairs ministry.

Forcefully Divorced Fatima Threatens Suicide
Ebtihal Mubarak, Arab News
JEDDAH, 22 December 2007 — Human rights activist Fawziya Al-Oyoni said that Fatima, the 34-year-old woman who was forcefully divorced from her husband by a judge in 2005 at the request of her half-brothers, called her in a state of panic threatening to commit suicide late Thursday night.
Fatima spent Eid in a women’s shelter in Dammam with her two-year-old son. Most of the staff at the shelter went home for the holidays.
“She told me ‘please come and take my child, I have to end my life tonight. I can’t take this anymore’,” said Al-Oyoni, recounting the phone conversation. She said Fatima asked her to pick up the boy, Suleiman, and deliver him to his father. “‘I’m tired,’ she said. ‘I’m just tired. Please come right away’.”
Al-Oyoni, who is based in the Eastern Province, said she fears that Fatima’s mental state is cracking under an ordeal that started when her father passed away. Objecting to what they considered her husband’s low tribal background, Fatima’s half-brothers asked a local court to divorce the couple even though they had been married for over two years and had children.
The judge agreed. The couple fled and were later arrested in Jeddah where they were seeking help from officials. Fatima and her children spent some time in a women’s prison and when she refused to go back to her family the state sent her to the women’s shelter.
“I was literally shaking when I received her call,” said Al-Oyoni yesterday in an interview with Arab News. “She’s had rough days before, but this time it was different; she sounded determined to kill herself. She was screaming.”
Al-Oyoni said she contacted an official at the governmental Human Rights Commission on Thursday night requesting that they provide Fatima with a psychiatrist. “They told me to try to calm her down and tell her that they’re working on the case,” she said.
Fatima’s 37-year-old husband said yesterday that he fears his wife (he still considers her his wife) is breaking down under the stress. “She was always the strong and very much stubborn in fighting for her rights,” he said. “She’s wearing out.”
Al-Oyoni has now sent a letter to a high official (Arab News is withholding this name due to the sensitivity of the case) explaining Fatima’s mental state and her current situation.
Al-Oyoni said she’s asking this official to present Fatima’s case to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah hoping he might intervene.
Hussein Al-Sharif, head of the National Society of Human Rights (NSHR) in the Western Province and a law professor at King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah, told Arab News last week that since the Court of Cassation upheld the lower court’s verdict in January reversing the decision would require royal intervention.
A study by the NSHR was presented to the king in September that concluded the divorce ruling is invalid based on Islamic law.
Fatima was not answering her phone yesterday. Speaking to Arab News last week she said life in the women’s shelter is much like a prison.
She is limited in how much she is allowed to venture out and is monitored. “The social workers say they fear my half brothers would see me outside,” she said.
Adding to the stress, Fatima has said that she receives hateful SMS messages from her half-siblings. She provided Arab News with one that read: “We are highly connected with officials. You’re not getting anywhere by what you are doing you (expletive). You have no choice but to come back to us. Forget about your husband, the slave.”
Al-Oyoni said she was able to contact Fatima yesterday. “She sounded a bit better today, but I’m still very much concerned about her safety and that of her child,” said Al-Oyoni.

CHARSADDA, Pakistan (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed 48 people in a mosque in northwest Pakistan on Friday where a former interior minister was offering Muslim Eid festival prayers with worshippers, the government said.
The former minister, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, survived unhurt but at least 80 people were wounded in the blast in Charsadda district in North West Frontier Province. Several of the wounded were in a critical condition, Interior Ministry spokesman Colonel Javed Lodhi told Reuters.
Sherpao, who was interior minister in President Pervez Musharraf's recently dissolved government and who is now running in Jan. 8 parliamentary elections, was the likely target of the attack at the mosque in his home village, the government said.
Sherpao, who heads a small pro-Musharraf political party, escaped unharmed but his son was injured. Sherpao had been injured in April in another suicide attack at a public meeting in Charsadda.
Body parts and shoes were scattered around the mosque floor covered in pools of blood. Police found parts of a jacket, believed to belong to the attacker, and ball bearings aimed at causing maximum damage.
The suspected bomber, sitting in a middle row among the worshippers, detonated his bomb as prayers ended and people gathered around the politician to greet him, said a police official who asked not to be named.
"It's inhuman. No Muslim can do such a thing on the day of Eid," said Mohammad Asad, 45, who lost his two cousins in the attack.
Around 1,200 worshippers were at the mosque at the time of the explosion. Continued...

Centre issues ultimatum to Taslima
Barkha Dutt
Thursday, December 20, 2007 (New Delhi)
This time it is not the Marxists but the UPA government that has decided that controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen cannot return to her adopted city of Kolkata.
Moreover, Nasreen has been told that if she wants to live in Delhi, she will not be allowed to take part in any public functions.
Speaking exclusively to NDTV's Managing Editor Barkha Dutt, Taslima Nasreen said that the decision had been communicated officially to her by a senior official of the Ministry of External Affairs.
Nasreen also claimed that her security was cited as the reason for the Centre's decision.
The controversial author, who has already withdrawn parts of her writing considered offensive to certain Muslim groups, has been in hiding for the past month.
Breaking down on the telephone, she claimed that she was being made to live under house arrest.
''I appeal to the government to change its mind,'' she said.
Nasreen also asserted that she will leave India if she is refrained from returning to Kolkata.
The author has been in a government safe house since November and has courted trouble over her perceived anti-Islamic writings.
Meanwhile, the CPM, which had sent Taslima off to Jaipur last month, washed its hands off her, saying that this was between Taslima and the government.
''It is between Taslima and the Central government and we have nothing to do with this,'' said Shyamal Chakravarthy, Leader, CPM.
The Congress party too reiterated its earlier stand that no one who is allowed to stay in India can hurt the sentiments of the people.

Gujarat Global News Network, Vadodara
In a gruesome incident a Maulvi beheaded his 15 year old student for recovering Rs.7,000 which the boy's father had taken from him.
The maulvi (Islamic teacher) who was a friend of the victim's father stayed nearby and had given a loan of Rs.7, 000 to his friend. On not getting his money back the accused Narulhaq Abdulhaq Saiyad beheaded Abid Ali Saiyad and packed the head in a plastic bag and dumped it on the terrace of his house.
According to the police Narulhaq used to teach Abid. On Monday when he came to Abid's house he found him alone as his parents had gone out. Narulhaq asked Abid to come along with him to his house. An unsuspecting Abid went with him where Narul assaulted him with a sharp weapon and killed him.
When Abid did not return home till late night his father lodged a police complaint. When the cops questioned Narul he said that some people from a financial institution had kidnapped Abid. But he sounded suspicious and did not let police go on the first floor. The police broke upon the lock of the stair case and found the mutilated body of Abid on the terrace,
Narul was interrogated and he broke down and accepted his crime. The police arrested him and is looking for more evidence.

Christianity IS Mind Control

Here is a poignant video about the coercive persuasion, mind control, and brainwashing of Christianity. It exposes all kinds of mind control characteristics and methodologies even of those outside Christianity, but anyone who either is a Christian or has been a Christian will see the marks of Christian programming and indoctrination in this little film. I have made some comments below concerning one aspect of this mind control that is touched upon in this video. I hope you enjoy it!
In this video you hear the following statement: "Your bible clearly states that I am the the Messiah" (concerning a cult leader). The vast majority of people, both Christian and non-Christians alike, know that if someone claims to be the messiah you know it is just bullshit.
One of the greatest deceptions of Christianity is for the bible to claim Jesus as the Messiah. Why? Because he is not here. He is not a person to talk to physically. He is supposedly only reached through the holy spirit (which of course you cannot sit down with at a table and have a cup of tea together and chat). The mind is forced to have faith in an unseen deity whom cannot be physically questioned or communicated with (physical, verbal communication). The only source of physical "communication" with god is the bible (For christians: here is not the place to discuss spiritual communication through prayer and internal dialog with the holy spirit, thats another article) and the bible teaches that the leaders of the faith (pastors, elders, deacons, bishops, priests, bible scholars, and even parents, etc) hold a special divine authority as the leaders of god's kingdom here on earth (the church). The communication of authority only goes ONE WAY. Down the hierarchical chain-of-command: Father to Jesus to Holy Sprit to church leaders (or elders) to fathers then mothers. This is the flow of "divine authority." Ultimately, of course, the source of this authority is the bible, which just so happens to give itself its own authority and in turn gives an authority to the chain-of-command.
Now, the deception lies in that since the authority, practically speaking, is carried out by Christian leaders. You cannot question their authority because the bible says so. If you question the bible's authority you are in effect questioning god's authority and the leadership will not tolerate that, because they have the authority from the bible. So the mind is forced to either rebel against the whole system or become obedient. Theoretically obedient to the bible and practically obedient to the church authority.
Christianity is a mind control Cult and Jesus is its Cult leader. But because jesus isn't here we must worship him in the spirit with faith. Its sub-leaders, the pastors, elders, and teachers, - "God's Anointed Servants", practically speaking, are "under-shepherds" and point everyone to the invisible Jesus through faith. Thus the mind control is so much more difficult to see because the focus is not on any physical man, but on god and Jesus. Thus no matter how insane or abusive the "under-shepherds" or sub-leaders are the Cult program continues. See, if a physical cult leader started doing insane and abusive things it is much easier for the mind to wake up and say "wait a minute" and start questioning things. But because invisible Jesus is the Cult leader the system can continue forever because he is perfect and holy and just and all loving savior that does no wrong. Of course! You in effect have a Cult, just like any other more noticeable cults like Sun Myung Moon, but without the danger of it falling in on itself by the actions of a physical person. Because Jesus was perfect (as the "authoritative" bible says) and the Cult is focus is on him, the real programming and control goes unchallenged and unimpeded.
This is just a little food for thought.

Chinkara gazelle or Kashmiri Hindu?
December 19, 2007
A Chinkara gazelle is killed in Rajasthan in 1998. The alleged killer, actor Salman Khan, is charged and the prosecution is under process.
Many Kashmiri Pandits are killed in Jammu and Kashmir [Images] in the late 1980s and 1990s. The killers, who have admitted the killings, roam free and have not even been charged yet.
Anything wrong with this picture?
Not if you ask the ministry of home affairs (Kashmir division), government of India.
Using the privilege available under the Right to Information Act, Kashmiri Hindu youth filed a petition (click here to see the petition) to get the status of the pending cases against Farooq Ahmed Dar alias Bitta Karate.
Bitta Karate started his terror career as a Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front member. During the early days of terrorism in the Kashmir valley, he killed many innocent Kashmiri Hindus.
After waiting for two weeks, these youth got a reply from the director and central public information officer at the ministry of home affairs (Kashmir division), government of India (click here to see the official response).
The following was the stock response:
'...The information you have asked for is not available in the Kashmir Division of Ministry of Home Affairs...'
Not only are terrorists not charged and prosecuted, but the Kashmir division of the ministry of home affairs actually claims not to have any records about these killers and killings.
Am I convinced? Hell, No! Should you be convinced? Hell, No!
This ministry of home affairs has a separate Kashmir division within its ministry and it does not have any information about these merciless killers? Who is fooling whom?
Bitta Karate admitted the to the killings in a television interview. Please click here to see for yourself.
Common people like me have access to these videos and transcripts but the Kashmir division of the ministry of home affairs does not. What a shame!
Bitta Karate spent many years in Indian jails but was eventually released by a TADA court on bail on October 23, 2006. While granting bail, the presiding officer of the TADA court, N D Wani, observed that the court was aware of the fact that the allegations leveled against Bitta Karate are of a serious nature and could carry punishments of death or life imprisonment. The fact is that the prosecution (read the government of Jammu & Kashmir and India) has shown total disinterest in arguing the case, which is in complete violation of Article 21 of the Constitution.
And now Bitta Karate, who admitted killing scores of Kashmiri Hindus, is not only roaming free but is now playing the role of a politician on the Kashmir political scene. It is not inconceivable that there soon might be a day when he will become a state minister in the government of J&K, maybe even chief minister.
Do you feel it is okay for government agencies to let these terrorists roam free and be more concerned about Chinkara gazelles? Please do not get me wrong. I don't have anything against Chinkara gazelles and I do not advocate the killing of these endangered animals. But if I am ever given a choice between saving a human being and a Chinkara gazelle, you know what my choice will be. So where are the government's priorities?
How come terrorists are not being prosecuted as per the laws of the land? What is preventing the law enforcement agencies from implementing the laws and putting these killers behind bars so that they cannot harm any more innocent civilians? Isn't providing security to its citizens the first and foremost responsibility of any government? Am I missing something here?
While pseudo-secular human rights activists continue to scream about the Gujarat riots and clamour for face time on Indian 'progressive' media outlets, they have their lips sealed and pens dry about the horrendous ethnic cleansing of 400,000+ Kashmiri Hindus from Kashmir.
I guess gone are the days when journalists used to stand up against injustice and fight for the rights of ALL human beings, irrespective of the religion they belonged to. These days, it seems they get their stories handed over to them by their politician masters who only care about their kursi and 'votes' that get them that kursi. After all, it is a kissa kursi ka.
All I can say is that if there is life after death, I wish to be reborn as a Chinkara gazelle. At least, I will be assured that I am protected by the Indian Wildlife Act and wildlife activists who will fight for my survival.

CBI files rape cases against CPM activists in Nandigram
20 Dec, 2007, 0154 hrs IST, TNN
NEW DELHI: The CBI has shattered the CPM’s pretense of political morality by holding its activists responsible for rape and murder in Nandigram. The CBI has filed cases against CPM men for the alleged rape of a mother and her two daughters. The case concerns atrocities against women in Gokul Nagar village of Nandigram.
According to the FIR, the CPM activists forcibly entered the house of the woman on March 14. The activists allegedly raped the three victims over two days and laid siege to their house. The activists then demanded money from the victims for lifting the siege. The activists left only after the mother paid Rs 1,000. This case is also mentioned in the status report filed by the CBI before the Calcutta High Court.
The other three cases have been registered against police officials and unknown persons for looting. One case relates to the failure of a policeman to register case even after a victim alleged rape by CPM goons on March 15.
The other two cases have been registered against unnamed persons who went on a looting spree on the day of police firing. These four cases were earlier registered by the West Bengal police but were later transferred to the CBI. The investigating agency has registered the cases again and will continue the investigations. All the four cases were registered by the CBI on December 15.
Till now the CBI has registered seven cases related to the Nandigram firing and ensuing violence. The accused in these cases include police officials, CPM activists and unknown persons. The CBI has told the Calcutta High Court in its status report that CPM workers dressed as policemen had fired at protesters, that witnesses were being threatened by CPM activists and that the authenticity of the medical reports handed over to the investigating agency was questionable.
The agency also alleged that a witness was beaten up for giving a statement to the agency sleuths. The agency has also questioned the police claim that only 57 rounds were fired and told the court that indications were that more rounds were fired.
The CBI had submitted the status report on the investigations into the Nandigram police firing and violence in a sealed cover to the Calcutta High Court and had sought four months time for submitting the final report. The court had granted the CBI two months time to submit the final report on the March 14 Nandigram police firing.

Iran: Top cleric says women without veils must die
Tehran, 19 Dec. (AKI) - A top Muslim cleric in Iran, Hojatolislam Gholam Reza Hassani said on Wednesday that women in Iran who do not wear the hijab or Muslim headscarf, should die.
"Women who do not respect the hijab and their husbands deserve to die," said Hassani, who leads Friday prayers in the city of Urumieh, in Iranian Azerbaijan.
"I do not understand how these women who do not respect the hijab, 28 years after the birth of the Islamic Republic, are still alive," he said.
"These women and their husbands and their fathers must die," said Hassani, who is the representative of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in eastern Azerbaijan.
Hassani's statements came after two Kurdish feminists in Iran were accused of being members of an armed rebel group and of carrying out subversive activities threatening the security of the state.
It is believed that his statements and the arrests could spark a fresh crackdown on women who do not repect the Islamic dress code in Iran.
Thousands of women in Iran have already been warned this year for their "un-Islamic dress" such as wearing tight, short coats and skimpy headscarves.

'I want to study, but not in a burqa'

Little girls in the militancy-hit Swat Valley in northwestern Pakistan hate a diktat issued by pro-Taliban rebels to attend school in burqas.
Burqas are the only option some girls' schools in northwestern Pakistan have against being shut down or worse, being bombed.
"I want to study, but not in a burqa," said Shah Rukh, a 12-year-old girl enrolled at a primary school at Saidu Sharif in Swat.
Shah Rukh is just one of many girls who have learnt to speak out against the burqa diktat in the picturesque Valley.
"My 11-year-old daughter cries every morning when she has to wear the burqa," Mohammad Roshan, who teaches history at Jahanzeb College in Saidu Sharif, one of the main towns of Swat, told Newsline magazine.
In a private school in Mingora, the headquarters of Swat district, students were enraged when their principal received a letter from militants saying they would shut down the school.
"It is our right to get education," one of the girls in the school said.
A parent said his daughter "is constantly told by her teachers to attend school in a head-to-toe veil ever since the principal of the school received a letter of threat".
Several girls' schools in Swat have received letters with warnings that they will be blown up if the students do not attend classes in burqas.

Surat, December 18 Around 2,000 tribal men and women from different villages in South Gujarat, who had converted to Christianity, re-embraced Hinduism on Monday evening at a religious ceremony ( sammelan) at the Shivaji ground in Tapi district.
They took an oath by the fire in the presence of Jagat Guru Acharya Narendra Maharaj and submitted affidavits that they won't convert to Christianity ever again in the future.
The people had started gathering at the venue since Sunday night listening to the Jagat Guru's teaching before re-converting to Hinduism at the ceremony a day later.
Narayan Solanki, a disciple of Narendra Maharaj in Tapi district said, "There are many disciples of the Maharaj working in different villages of Vyara, Dharampur, Songadh, Mandvi, Ahwa-Dang, Vasda and so on. They visit these places and interact with the tribals who have been baptised earlier by various missionaries and convince them to return back to Hinduism."
According to Solanki, the Maharaj also runs an ashram at Naneej village in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. It was after a visit to one such ashram that they became motivated to become his disciples. "We visit different villages and persuade those, who have been baptised, to come back into the Hindu fold," said Solanki.
Giving details about the sammelan (ceremony), another disciple, Mahipal Thakur, said, "We have been working for the sammelan for the past few months and contacted tribals in various villages, who had become fed up with Christianity. These tribals gathered on Sunday night at Tapi district. They were provided with food and accommodation, and later they met the Maharaj during the night. On Monday, they assembled at the Shivaji ground where the Maharaj gave a religious sermon. Many of the tribal men also cut off their hair and took oaths, while all of them gave thumb impressions on the affidavits saying they have willingly returned to the folds of the Hindu religion."
Deputy Collector of Tapi district N S Halbe said, "The organisers had taken prior permission to hold the sammelan. The district officials visited the venue and have submitted their report about it to me."

'Eye ancestor' debunks ID nonsense
December 13, 2007 - 11:18AM
An Australian scientist has gone one step further in debunking intelligent design (ID) by discovering evidence of an evolutionary forerunner to the modern eye.
Dr Gavin Young from the Australian National University discovered the evidence while analysing the fossilised remains of 400-million-year-old Devonian Placoderms - jawed ancestors of modern fish that were protected by thick bony armour.
Unlike all modern vertebrates, Dr Young discovered that the placoderms had a different arrangement of muscles and nerves supporting the eyeball, evidence of an intermediate stage in the evolution between jawless and jawed vertebrates.
Proponents of intelligent design claim that something so complex as the modern eye could not have evolved on its own in stages and must have been designed by an intelligent being, but Dr Young believes these fossils show that is not the case.
"The fossil record has something to say about the evolution of the eye as here we have a superb example showing that the complexity of the eye goes back 400 million years and when we look in detail we find an intermediate stage between the jawed and jawless fish," he said.
"The whole argument is, can you evolve something as complex as an eye from a series of small steps, and this fills in a major gap in the evolutionary sequence that has led to the eyes of all living species."
There has been great tension between scientists who label ID "dressed up creationism" and proponents of intelligent design who believe their theory should be taught alongside evolution in schools.
Dr Young said that part of the trouble in tracing the evolution of the eye was that soft tissues don't tend to fossilise, but the eye cavities in these 400 million-year-old fossil fish were lined with a delicate layer of very thin bone that preserved the positions of the nerves and muscles in perfect detail.
Dr Young said that the arrangement of these early placoderms eyes is different from all modern vertebrates in the pattern of nerves and tiny muscles used for rotating each eyeball.
"This is the first definite fossil evidence demonstrating an intermediate stage in the evolution of our most complex sensory organ, these extinct placoderms had the eyeball still connected to the braincase by cartilage, as in modern sharks, and a primitive eye muscle arrangement that is halfway between the living jawed fish and the group with no jaws," Dr Young said.
Dr Young says that the area around Wee Jasper and Lake Burrinjuck in NSW is world famous for the unique preservation of these very primitive early fishes.
"The ancient limestone reefs exposed around Lake Burrinjuck in New South Wales have produced exceptionally well preserved placoderm specimens with braincase intact," Dr Young said.

Saudi women try suicide to escape social pressure

RIYADH, Dec 18 (Reuters) - Segregated from men, banned from driving and facing restrictions on travel, work, and even study, many Saudi women attempt suicide to escape one of the world's strictest societies.
Saudi Arabia, a conservative Islamic state where clerics demand the seclusion of females, often has an unforgiving attitude to women who find themselves victim to male violence.
A 19-year-old woman who was abducted and gang-raped by seven men was recently sentenced to 200 lashes in a case that drew international criticism and tarnished the image of Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, around the world.
King Abdullah this week issued a pardon for the woman, in what appeared to be a sharp rebuke to clerics of Saudi Arabia's hardline Wahhabi Islam who dominate the judiciary.
But the pressure of their closeted lifestyle in Saudi society forces women to live in a world of their own, often making the anxieties of adolescence or ordinary family problems harder to bear.
"I was desperate back then because of family problems. My mother got divorced and I had to stay with her while my two older brothers stayed with my father," said Maha Hamad, a 23-year-old student who attempted suicide two years ago.
"I faced too much pressure from my mother in everything I do in my daily life. It was impossible for me to run my life without her dictating to me what to do and what not to do."
Suicide is strongly proscribed in Islamic law, and hospitals often register suicides as "misuse of medicine" thus allowing cases to slip through the statistical net.
SOCIAL PRESSURES
A rare 2006 study of suicide survivors carried out by Salwa al-Khatib, a researcher at King Saud University, found that 96 cases involved women compared to four cases involving men.
She said the hospital where she works as a counsellor receives on average 11 suicide attempts by women each month.
"Women go through severe depression due to social pressure," Khatib said.
"The differentiation between males and females inside families contributes to growing pressure ... Men who are raised to be superior mostly look down on women. They develop abusive behaviour to express power over them."
Using light doses of medicine during daytime hours, many suicide attempts by women are clearly cries for help rather than serious attempts to end their lives, Khatib said.
"Many teenage girls in Saudi Arabia suffer from lack of communication with their parents. No one listens to their emotional, social or even educational problems," Khatib said.
Forced marriage is a common factor behind the depression young women suffer, researchers say. Usually only women from affluent upper-class families manage to marry partners of their own choosing in Saudi Arabia.
Layla, a former administrator at Kingdom Hospital in Riyadh, recounted one case of a 20-year-old woman who tried to take her life because her parents forced her to marry a man in his 70s.
"She tried slitting her wrists just after a few months of the marriage. Forced marriage is one of the most serious problems girls face," she said.
"Sometimes families do not want to force their daughters into such thing, but interference from the extended family and relatives puts pressure on them, especially if they live in areas outside the main cities," she said.

A children's sing-along DVD for would-be suicide bombers is being investigated by police after being found on sale in one of Britain's terrorist hotbeds.
The disturbing disc of music videos - part of an Egyptian-made series - shows a young girl singing about following in the footsteps of her suicide bomber mother.
A group of self-proclaimed orphans also turn against the West over the plight of the Palestinian people.

Disturbing: A child holds a stick of dynamite in the sing-along DVD for would-be suicide bombers
The shocking DVD was purchased in Bradford, West Yorks, and full details of the Leeds-based UK distributors are contained on the back of the cover.
The West Yorkshire Police specialist counter terrorism unit are investigating the contents - which contain three tracks sung by children in Arabic with English subtitles.
The first song is about two children who lose their mother when she becomes a suicide bomber.
The song is believed to be a reference to Reem al-Reyashi, a 22-year-old Palestinian mother-of-two who blew herself up on January 14, 2004, at a crossing, in the Gaza Strip, killing four Israelis.
The video begins with an Arab woman playing with her two children, then leaving her home with dynamite tucked in her dress, blowing herself up after being challenged by uniformed soldiers, and her children and husband finding out about her death on TV.

Appealing to children: The cartoon image appears at the beginning of the DVD
After finding out about the suicide on television, her small daughter finds a stick of dynamite in her mother's wardrobe and turns to the camera with the subtitles: "My love will not be by words. I will follow my mother's steps."
Philip Davies, MP for Shipley, West Yorks, said: "It's outrageous that this kind of material is so readily available in parts of West Yorkshire and it beggars belief that somebody is prepared to proudly proclaim that they distribute this material.
"My worry is how many people have had access to this kind of material and how many children may have already been influenced by it."
The MP contacted police after being passed the DVD by a concerned resident. He was told that the disc had been sold at a mosque in the city.
He said: "I thought it was sick and totally and utterly unacceptable.
"It seems to be directed at children and I find it quite disturbing."
He added: "It strikes me as being incitement to terrorism. I hope that the people that distribute the material will be arrested and charged."
Seemingly innocent: But the child is being groomed to kill
Mr Davies said he would be writing to the Home Secretary asking what support the Government was giving to the police to locate and eliminate this kind of material.
The head of West Yorkshire's counter terrorism unit, Det Chief Supt John Parkinson, said: "The DVD has been initially reviewed and officers are carrying out further inquiries regarding its content to establish whether or not any offences have been committed."
Yorkshire Muslim peer and Shadow Communities Secretary Sayeeda Warsi said the authorities should not be afraid to come down with the full force of the law on extremists.
"I find it deeply disturbing if this kind of material is available and aimed at children so young," she said.
"As well as winning over the hearts and minds of our own communities in order to deal with perverted terrorist organisations, we should always stamp down on anything that is nothing short of criminal, using the full force of the law."

Sudan jails two Egyptians for blasphemy

December 17, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — A Khartoum court has sentenced two Egyptians to six months in prison for marketing a book that is deemed offensive to Aisha, one of Prophet Mohammed’s wives, local press reported on Monday.
Abdel Fattah Abdel Raouf and Mahrous Mohammed Abdel Aziz were sentenced on Sunday under article 125 of Sudan’s penal code, the same section under which U.K. teacher Gillian Gibbons was convicted after allowing her class to name a teddy bear Mohammed, the daily Al-Rai al-Am reported.
Justice Minister Mohammed Ali al-Mardhi said Dec. 11 following the pair’s arrest that they were guilty of bringing over the book entitled "Aisha, mother of believers, devoured her sons" from bookseller and publisher Madbouli in Egypt and selling it in Sudan.
"The book contains blasphemous passages and particularly despicable offenses to the prophet and to the mother of believers," as Aisha is often called, Mardhi said at the time.
Under article 125, the two could have faced 40 lashes and a fine, as well as the jail sentence.
On Nov. 29, Gillian Gibbons was sentenced to 15 days in prison for insulting religion but after spending eight days in custody, she was pardoned by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir following the mediation of two U.K. Muslim peers.

Saudi king pardons rape victim - report
Mon Dec 17, 2007 7:00pm IST
RIYADH
(Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has pardoned the victim of a gang-rape, whose sentencing to 200 lashes caused an international outcry, a Saudi newspaper said on Monday.
The daily al-Jazirah cited the Justice Minister Abdullah bin Mohammad al-Sheikh as saying the king had the right to issue pardons if it was in the "public interest".
The minister did not confirm if the pardon, reported from unnamed sources, was correct but the newspaper is close to the religious establishment who control the Justice Ministry.
The Saudi monarch usually issues pardons to mark the Muslim Eid al-Adha festival which begins on Wednesday, but such announcements are published on the official Saudi Press Agency.
The 19-year-old Shi'ite woman was abducted and raped along with a male companion by seven men last year in a case that has drawn criticism from around the world.
Ruling according to Saudi Arabia's strict reading of Islamic law, a court originally sentenced the woman to 90 lashes for being alone with an unrelated man and the rapists to prison terms of up to five years.
The Supreme Judicial Council last month increased the sentence to 200 lashes and six months in prison and ordered the rapists to serve between two years and nine years in prison.
U.S. President George W. Bush said earlier this month that King Abdullah "knows our position loud and clear" on the case, Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said last month he hoped the ruling would be changed.
Fawziya al-Oyouni, a women's rights activist, welcomed the report but said it was not enough.
"We don't want to rely simply on pardons. We need harsher sentences for the guilty parties and we want to feel safe," she said, citing another rape case in the Eastern Province this month.

IN a visit sure to anger the families of those killed in the 2002 Bali bombings, radical cleric Abu Bakar Bashir has been allowed to see the three death-row bombers in jail to offer them guidance.
Himself convicted then acquitted of his role in the murderous nightclub attacks which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians, Bashir told the terrorists that they must be patient and not weak, and that they were mujahidin (holy warriors).
Also alleged to have been the spiritual leader of terror group Jemaah Islamiyah, questions are being asked why authorities allowed the 69-year-old to visit his one-time protege at Nusakambangan, an island prison complex off the southern coast of Java.
Bashir was among a group of Islamic preachers, family members and lawyers who visited the so-called smiling assassin Amrozi, his older brother Mukhlas and Imam Samudra on Saturday.
Before going into the jail, Bashir warned of a "big disaster" for Indonesia if the three were executed for their crimes, admitting their methods in defending Islam were wrong.
"It is true they were defending Muslims but their methods were wrong. That is why they are now fasting to pay for the loss of innocent lives," he said.
Bashir also delivered a sermon to the group, during which some family members are reported to have cried. He asked them to be patient in the test they were facing.
"Convince yourself that you are a mujahidin. A mujahidin cannot be weak, sad and show grief and have to be patient," he told the men.
He also said the Indonesian Government should review the convictions and death penalties of the trio.
The men themselves, who have never expressed any remorse for their crimes except to say they are sorry that fellow Muslims died in the bombings, warned of doom for Australia.
"Not long now Australia will go down. Its world will go down, the people will go down and doom on their Armageddon," Samudra said in English.
"Specially for you Australia. Tell to your Minister, if you kafir did not convert to Islam then you will go to hell. Take America for example. Now their condition is worse than Russia."
Perth man Peter Hughes, who survived the bombings with burns to more than half of his body, yesterday slammed the decision to allow the prison visit. "It's corruption at its worst," Mr Hughes said.
"Bashir needs to be kept quiet. Our Government needs to step in and tell the Indonesians this isn't acceptable."
