Islamists on conversion campaign
VR Jayaraj | Kochi
Islamists in Kerala have launched an organised campaign for converting girls belonging to other religions into Islam. Police believe that Islamist organisation NDF (presently Popular Front of India) and its student outfit Campus Front could be behind this campus-based campaign. An investigation is presently on into the matter on the instructions of the Kerala High Court.
Information about this planned campaign came out in the open after two girls in an MBA college in Pathanam-thitta, who had gone missing some days ago, were produced in the HC on a habeas corpus petition. Girls told the court that they were taken to a place in Kozhikode, where a group led by Campus Front activists Shehenshah and Sirajuddeen forced them to convert into Islam and sign marriage contracts.
Lawyer Muhammad Ansari, who appeared in the court for the Government, said there was a planned effort behind the forced conversion of the girls into Islam. In a petition, Jacob Thomas of Pallikkal, Kottarakkara, Kollam and K Madhavan of Peroorkada, Thiruvananth-apruam, parents of the girls, had alleged that their daughters were detained by one Shehansha of Pettah, Pathana-mthitta. Girls were doing a project after completing MBA.
The girls had left their homes informing the parents that they were going to convert into Islam. However, when they were produced in the court on the habeas corpus petition, they said that they were forced to convert into Islam in a deserted house at West Chelari, Kozhikode district where they were taken. Though the court sent the girls with their parents, it ruled that they could be taken to their homes but no restriction should be placed on their food and prayer.
According to Gopakumar, assistant commissioner of police, Cantonment, Thiruva-nanthapuram, who is in charge of the investigation into the campaign of the extremists to convert girls into Islam, as many as 940 girls had gone missing in Kerala in the past five years. He said the truth behind these cases could be brought only after probe.
The police are now in the process of verifying the reports that some Hindu organisations are preparing to counter the Islamists’ designs. A report regarding this would be submitted in the High Court early next month.
However, sources in the police refused to confirm reports regarding an Islamic group specialising in luring young girls for converting into Islam. Reports had appeared in a section of the media in January last that religious Romeos had converted more than 4,000 girls through such designs.

New Delhi: Moral policing is again on the rise in Kashmir. The principal of a co-ed college in Sopore has been threatened with serious consequences if he doesn’t enforce the Islamic dress code to the 3,000 women students within three days.
Fifty-five-year-old Mohammad Ashraf Peer says he was abducted by seven armed men, thrashed and detained for several hours.
“Their message was that Islamic dress code should be enforced in college. I believe they have called many other principals in the area and given the same orders,” Peer said.
This is the first major instance of moral policing in more than a year. In the early ‘90s during the initial years of militancy, women were strictly asked to observe the purda. But most Kashmiri women ignored that diktat.
Then, more recently most women again resisted a move by Dukhtaran-e-Millat leader Asiya Andrabi to impose the hijab. And this time as well the women students are defiant.
“The way they handled our principal was wrong. If they wanted the veil to be enforced they should have come and asked us. Next they will force this diktat on our teachers then to us, this is unacceptable,” a student said.
Meanwhile, the police have started an investigation. They say there could also be a non-militancy angle.
The separatists have so far remained silent over the matter.

Protesters threaten bloodshed over Hindu temple

SHAH ALAM, Aug 28 — A group of Malay-Muslim protesters claiming to be residents of Section 23 have threatened bloodshed unless the state government stopped the construction of a Hindu Temple.
Amid chants of "Allahuakbar," the group also left the severed head of a cow at the entrance of the State Secretariat here as a warning to Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.
The "residents" said that the construction of a Hindu temple in a 90 per cent Malay- Muslim neighbourhood was insensitive because activities there would disrupt their lives.
They claimed that the "noise" from the temple would disturb their own praying, and that they would not be able to function properly as Muslims.
The group of 50 over protestors marched shortly after Friday prayers from the Shah Alam State mosque to the State Secretariat.
“I challenge YB Khalid, YB Rodziah and Xavier Jeyakumar to go on with the temple construction. I guarantee bloodshed and racial tension will happen if this goes on, and the state will be held responsible,” shouted Ibrahim Haji Sabri amid strong chants of “Allahu Akbar!”
Ibrahim identified himself as the Deputy Chairman of the Resident’s Committee against the building of the temple in S23 here, which is perceived by some as being a Muslim majority area.
He told the press that the state should move the temple to Section 22 as ‘originally planned’, and also labelled Khalid a “traitor to the Malay race and Islam”.
It is understood that the protest is an immediate reaction towards the Selangor MB’s visit to the Hindu temple site yesterday, an act seen by the "residents" as disrespectful to the Muslims of the community.

Mohd. Zurit Bin Ramli, who claims to be the secretary of the "Coalition of Malaysian NGOs" echoed Ibrahim’s stand on the matter, saying that it was irresponsible on the part of the state government to approve the construction as there was apparently a “90 per cent” majority Muslim population in Section 23.
“With a temple on our residential area, we cannot function properly as Muslims. The temple will disrupt our daily activities like prayers in the Surau. We cannot concentrate with the sounds coming from the temple,” stated Zurit.
When asked whether members of the protest were affiliated with any organisations or movements, Ibrahim claimed that the people present today were members of PAS, PKR as well as Umno who are “united in the name of Islam and the Malay spirit.”
The state government was also accused of lying to the people of Selangor.
The Chairman of the Residents Committee, Mahyuddin Manaf excitedly proclaimed that the committee would uncover “the lies” and find proof of the state’s misconduct.
“Khalid Ibrahim wears a mask of a Muslim, but in truth he is a liberal. PAS stands to lose out as a result. I voted for PAS as well as Khalid in the past elections,” Mahyuddin claimed.
The issue first cropped up when the Selangor government proposed that the Sri Mariamman temple be relocated from Section 19 to Section 23.

Riyadh - Saudi Arabia's deputy interior minister survived an assassination attempt when a man wanted on terrorism charges blew himself up in the minister's office, the official Saudi press Agency reported on Friday. Prince Mohammed bin Nayef was meeting well-wishers for the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan in Jeddah on Thursday when the man detonated an explosives belt, killing himself.
The suicide bomber had announced he was giving himself up and wanted to meet the prince, who is responsible for security in the Kingdom.
The prince suffered minor injuries to a hand, but no one else was seriously injured.
"This will only increase our determination to eradicate this (militancy)," Prince Mohammed said, during his meeting with King Abdullah, who went to check on the prince upon hearing the news.
Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia arrested 44 suspects believed to be part of al-Qaeda network in the kingdom who had sought to recruit young people and use charity donations to finance their activities.
In July, a special court in Riyadh convicted 330 people in what was the first known Saudi trial of suspects accused of plotting terrorist attacks on behalf of al-Qaeda.
Friday's attack is the first known attempt against a member of the royal family since the anti-terror operation began in the Kingdom eight years ago.
தற்போது 44 இஸ்லாமிய பயங்கரவாதிகளை சவுதி அரேபிய அரசாங்கம் கைது செய்துள்ளது.

SAUDI ARABIA: CHILD BRIDE TURNED OVER TO 80-YEAR-OLD HUSBAND
(ANSAmed) - AL-LAITH, AUGUST 25 - A 10-year-old bride was returned last Sunday to her 80-year-old husband by her father who discovered her at the home of her aunt with whom she has been hiding for around 10 days. A Saudi local newspaper said the husband, who denies he is 80 in spite of claims by the girl's family, accused the aunt of meddling in his affairs. "My marriage is not against Shariah. It included the elements of acceptance and response by the father of the bride," he said. He added that he had been engaged to his wifés elder sister and that this broke off as she wanted to continue with her education. "In light of this, her father offered his younger daughter. I was allowed to have a look at her according to Shariah and found her acceptable," he said. Maatouq Al-Abdullah, a member of the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR), said there is no system in place regulating the marriage of young girls, something that he said results in adverse psychological, health and social effects. "Such marriages are considered a gross violation of charters on the rights of children, which the Kingdom has signed and which set the age of adulthood at 18," he added. (ANSAmed).

Police are searching for a burkha-clad man who helped steal designer watches worth £150,000 in an armed robbery today.
The man and two accomplices, armed with a handgun and an axe, burst into Michael Jones Jewellers on the High Street in Banbury, Oxfordshire, at about 2.20pm.
They threatened four members of staff, a man and three women, with their weapons before making off with Rolex, Cartier and Breitling watches.
A man was waiting outside for the three suspects in a black Audi, which was later found abandoned.
Staff at the shop told police the offenders, including the one wearing the burkha, were all male.
The other two were wearing dark clothing and had their faces covered. All are thought to be Asian.
Detective Inspector Steve Duffy, leading the investigation, said: 'Thankfully, nobody was injured during the robbery but obviously the staff have been left very shaken by what has happened.
'The getaway car was found abandoned shortly before 2.45pm in Western Crescent in the Hightown Road area of Banbury.
'I appeal to anyone who was in Banbury town centre today and has any information, however insignificant you think it may be, to contact police immediately.'
No one at the shop, which also has two branches in Northampton, was available for comment this afternoon.
Anyone with information should call Det Insp Duffy via the Thames Valley Police enquiry centre on 0845 8 505 505.

According to sources, security officers from the Hawalli governorate spotted the woman chewing gum at 5:30 am while they were on patrol duty. When they questioned her about the act, she said she had the personal freedom to do as she pleased.

Meanwhile, two Kuwaiti citizens were arrested for cases previously registered them.
According to sources, both citizens were stopped for identification by security officials on patrol duty. While verifying their documents, however, it was discovered that one citizen had a drug-related case registered against him for which he was sentenced to a prison term of 12 years. The other citizen had several civil cases registered against him.
Both the men were handed over to the authorities for further action.

Mali protest against women's law
Women were among the crowd at the rally at Bamako's main stadium
Tens of thousands of people in Mali's capital, Bamako, have been protesting against a new law which gives women equal rights in marriage.
The law, passed earlier this month, also strengthens inheritance rights for women and children born out of wedlock.
The head of a Muslim women's association says only a minority of Malian women - "the intellectuals" as she put it - supports the law.
Several other protests have taken place in other parts of the country.
The law was adopted by the Malian parliament at the beginning of August, and has yet to be signed into force by the president.
One of the most contentious issues in the new legislation is that women are no longer required to obey their husbands.
Hadja Sapiato Dembele of the National Union of Muslim Women's Associations said the law goes against Islamic principles.
"We have to stick to the Koran," Ms Dembele told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme. "A man must protect his wife, a wife must obey her husband."
"It's a tiny minority of women here that wants this new law - the intellectuals. The poor and illiterate women of this country - the real Muslims - are against it," she added

America is not a Christian nation. We are, it is true, a nation founded by Christians, and according to a 2008 survey, 76 percent of us continue to identify as Christian (still, that's the lowest percentage in American history). Of course, we are not a Hindu—or Muslim, or Jewish, or Wiccan—nation, either. A million-plus Hindus live in the United States, a fraction of the billion who live on Earth. But recent poll data show that conceptually, at least, we are slowly becoming more like Hindus and less like traditional Christians in the ways we think about God, our selves, each other, and eternity.
The Rig Veda, the most ancient Hindu scripture, says this: "Truth is One, but the sages speak of it by many names." A Hindu believes there are many paths to God. Jesus is one way, the Qur'an is another, yoga practice is a third. None is better than any other; all are equal. The most traditional, conservative Christians have not been taught to think like this. They learn in Sunday school that their religion is true, and others are false. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me."
Americans are no longer buying it. According to a 2008 Pew Forum survey, 65 percent of us believe that "many religions can lead to eternal life"—including 37 percent of white evangelicals, the group most likely to believe that salvation is theirs alone. Also, the number of people who seek spiritual truth outside church is growing. Thirty percent of Americans call themselves "spiritual, not religious," according to a 2009 NEWSWEEK Poll, up from 24 percent in 2005. Stephen Prothero, religion professor at Boston University, has long framed the American propensity for "the divine-deli-cafeteria religion" as "very much in the spirit of Hinduism. You're not picking and choosing from different religions, because they're all the same," he says. "It isn't about orthodoxy. It's about whatever works. If going to yoga works, great—and if going to Catholic mass works, great. And if going to Catholic mass plus the yoga plus the Buddhist retreat works, that's great, too."
Then there's the question of what happens when you die. Christians traditionally believe that bodies and souls are sacred, that together they comprise the "self," and that at the end of time they will be reunited in the Resurrection. You need both, in other words, and you need them forever. Hindus believe no such thing. At death, the body burns on a pyre, while the spirit—where identity resides—escapes. In reincarnation, central to Hinduism, selves come back to earth again and again in different bodies. So here is another way in which Americans are becoming more Hindu: 24 percent of Americans say they believe in reincarnation, according to a 2008 Harris poll. So agnostic are we about the ultimate fates of our bodies that we're burning them—like Hindus—after death. More than a third of Americans now choose cremation, according to the Cremation Association of North America, up from 6 percent in 1975. "I do think the more spiritual role of religion tends to deemphasize some of the more starkly literal interpretations of the Resurrection," agrees Diana Eck, professor of comparative religion at Harvard.
So let us all say "om."

Smugglers 'Hid Heroin In Koran'
12:48pm UK, Thursday August 20, 2009
A man and his mother-in-law have been arrested for attempting to smuggle thousands of pounds worth of heroin concealed within a copy of the Koran.
Heroin bags were found hidden in the pages of the Koran
Custom officials at Jakarta's international airport seized the book, the religious text of Islam, as it arrived by DHL express mail delivery from Cambodia on Tuesday.
Their suspicions were raised when a routine X-ray of the parcel exposed a series of holes in the book.
A closer inspection revealed 60 grams of heroin secreted in four small plastic bags near its front and back covers.
Police valued the hoard at 600 million rupiah, or £35,000.
Stash was valued at £35,000
Maman Sulaeman, head of customs at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, said an Indonesian man was arrested soon after the discovery.
"He claimed that he was just a courier and that he did not know the contents of the package," Mr Sulaeman said.
The suspect's mother-in-law, thought to be an accomplice, was also apprehended.
The pair, from Jakarta, are now being held by the Indonesian National Police.
Under the country's tough narcotics law, they could be sentenced to death if found guilty of attempted drugs smuggling.

Taliban cut off fingers of 2 Afghan voters
(AP) – 7 hours ago
KABUL — An Afghan vote monitoring group says Taliban militants in Afghanistan's south cut off the fingers of two Afghan voters, carrying out a gruesome pre-election threat.
Nader Nadery of the Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan says Saturday two voters in southern Kandahar province — the Taliban's spiritual birthplace — lost their fingers.
Nadery says the two fingers sliced off had been dipped in purple indelible ink, an anti-fraud measure, but one that identified voters to militants in dangerous, insurgent-held areas.
Rumors that militants would cut fingers off spread before Thursday's presidential vote. However, a Taliban spokesman said militants would not carry out such attacks.

Taliban’s latest threat: cutting off noses and ears to anyone who dares voting
With attacks up, leaflets warn of suicide missions against polling stations on Thursday’s election. The number of registered voters is also up. Karzai is expected to win but barely.
Kabul (AsiaNews/Agencies) – The latest threats issued by the Taliban to disrupt next Thursday’s presidential election include “suicide attacks against polling stations” and cutting off “noses and ears of those who vote”, this according to leaflets left in the southern part of the country, but also to a lesser extent in Kabul. Equally attacks have been stepped up against the military but especially the civilian population.
“We are using new tactics targeting election centres,” Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said.
Opinion polls indicate Karzai has a strong lead—around 45 per cent—but may not win the 50 per cent necessary to avoid a run-off against his strongest challenger.
For this reason Abdul Rashid Dostum, an exiled veteran Uzbek general, was allowed to return. His supporters gave him 10 per cent of the vote in the 2004 election.
Some 6,500 polling stations will be in operation on Election Day.
The number of registered voters is up, 16.7 million (41 percent women) against 12 million in the previous election in 2004.
Some 36 candidates are running for president, including two women.
The country’s 34 provincial councils are also being renewed. About 3,324 candidates are running; 342 of these are women. In 2005 they were 3,200, including 286 women.
The first results should be made public at the end of August.
The official announcement is scheduled for 7 September 2009.

Woman wants public caning for drinking beer
Fri Aug 21, 2009 5:52am EDT
SUNGAI SIPUT, Malaysia (Reuters) - A Malaysian Muslim woman who will be caned next week for drinking beer has defiantly asked that the punishment be carried out in public in a case that is fueling debate about tolerance in this multi-racial country.
Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno will be the first Malaysian woman to be caned under Islamic laws applicable to Malaysia's Muslims, who account for 60 percent of the 27-million population.
She said the 20-month ordeal added to her distress, but she respected the law banning alcohol for Muslims and was determined to go through with the punishment -- six strokes of the cane.
The mother of two, who also paid a 5,000 ringgit ($1,420) fine, asked for the punishment, usually carried out in a closed prison, to be done in public.
"I never cried when I was sentenced by the judge. I told myself, alright then, let's get on with it," Kartika, 32, told Reuters in an interview at her father's house in a rural Malay village, about 300 km (186 miles) north of Kuala Lumpur.
Islam is the official religion in this country that has a dual-track legal system, with Islamic criminal and family laws applicable to Muslims alongside civil legislation.
Opinions are divided about the punishment Kartika faces under Islamic laws some say are too severe and selectively enforced.
Amnesty International criticized on Friday the punishment as "degrading" and said the caning comes at a time when the role of Islam in Malaysia is assuming greater importance.
One of the main opposition parties wants Malaysia, which has ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities who are not Muslim, to become an Islamic state with sharia laws on punishment.

Iran Threatens
To Ban Haj
The Iranian warning comes after a series of shocking reports shed light on the serious misconduct of Saudi police in dealing with Iranian pilgrims.
Iran says pilgrimage to holy cities in Saudi Arabia would be banned unless Saudi officials agree to change their disrespectful and offensive behavior toward Iranian pilgrims.
“The future pilgrimage of Iranians to Saudi Arabia will depend on whether the government in that country would treat them with the respect they deserve,“ said Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, Presstv reported on Tuesday.
Mottaki made the remarks in a meeting with the outgoing Saudi ambassador, Osama bin Ahmad Al-Sonousi, while condemning the systematic mistreatment of Iranian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia.
The warning comes after a series of shocking reports shed light on the serious misconduct of Saudi police in dealing with Iranian pilgrims.
The controversy surfaced publicly in 2007 when the Saudi police started fingerprinting Iranian pilgrims--a move that caused an outcry in the Tehran government.
Mohammad Taqi Rahbar, a senior parliamentarian, earlier condemned the move, proposing to boycott the Haj pilgrimage until the Saudis provide an explanation.
“The parliament would question the concerned officials at the Iranian Foreign Ministry regarding the fingerprinting of Iranian women, and we in the parliament are also going to issue a communiquŽ,“ he said.
Rahbar said Iranian Haj pilgrims spend tens of billions of rials (millions of US dollars) annually, contributing to that country’s businesses and market economy significantly.
The bid to ban Haj pilgrimage was seconded by leading religious figures such as Ayatollah Nasser Makarem-Shirazi. “If extremist Wahhabis continue their shameful behavior, we will have no choice but to ban Umrah (minor pilgrimage),“ he said.
Wahhabis, a small minority in the Muslim world, are believed to be extremists dominating Saudi Arabia.
These extremists prevent women from driving, voting and even visiting graves.
In a separate incident, an Iranian cleric, Hojjatoleslam Mohammad Garmab-Dashti, was sentenced by a Saudi court to three months in prison and 75 lashes, after a Wahhabi man accused him of “spitting on the grave of the first Caliph“.
Garmab-Dashti rejected the charges and urged the court to review his case. Arab judicial officials, however, refused to review footage on surveillance camera on the premises, arguing that the testimony of the Arab witness is sufficient.

Wave of Baghdad blasts kills at least 75
By SINAN SALAHEDDIN (AP) – 1 hour ago
BAGHDAD — A truck bomb tore through Iraq's Foreign Ministry Wednesday, knocking out concrete slabs and windows and leaving a mass of charred cars outside as a wave of explosions around Baghdad killed at least 75 people.
It was the deadliest day in the capital since U.S. troops largely withdrew from cities on June 30 and a major challenge to Iraqi control of Baghdad. A steady escalation of attacks this month has sparked fears of a resurgence of violence ahead of next year's national elections.
The deadliest of the attacks hit near the Foreign Ministry, killing at least 59 people and wounding 250. Officials said the toll may climb as rescue workers dig through rubble and debris. The ministry is just outside the Green Zone, the most heavily protected part of the capital. The officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.
The force of the explosion blew concrete slabs off the front of the 10-story building, shattered windows and crushed cars parked outside. Dozens of cars were burned.
The blast was so strong it also damaged nearby buildings. A large area outside the ministry was covered by debris and broken glass and it damage windows in the parliament building, inside the Green Zone.
A recent rise in bombings has dealt a blow to Iraqi government efforts to restore a sense of normalcy in the capital as the overall level of violence remains low compared with recent years. Iraqi security forces have begun removing concrete blast walls, which have been credited with helping reducing violence. The walls have been coming down in residential and commercial areas with the aim of improving appearance and easing traffic congestion.
The midmorning attacks hit first near the Finance Ministry in northern Baghdad and then minutes later near the Foreign Ministry. Around the same time as the explosion near the Foreign Ministry, mortars struck inside the Green Zone. It was not immediately known what damage the mortars caused or whether there were causalities.
Another car bomb targeted a joint Iraqi police and army patrol just outside the Finance Ministry, killing at least eight people and wounding 22, a police official said. Twenty-two were wounded, said the official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity.
Another blast in the commercial area of western Baghdad's Baiyaa district killed two people and wounded 16, while a bombing in the commercial district of Bab al-Muadham killed six people and wounded 24, authorities said.
Gen. Ray Odierno, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said Monday that he wanted to deploy U.S. soldiers alongside Iraqi and Kurdish troops in northern Iraq where some of the worst attacks in recent weeks have been carried out.
U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq's cities on June 30 under a security pact that outlines the American withdrawal by the end of 2011. President Barack Obama has ordered all U.S. combat troops out of Iraq by Aug. 31, 2010, leaving a contingency of up to 50,000 U.S. troops in training and advising roles.
Odierno said Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has been receptive to the idea, though has not approved it.

Lashkar bans TV in Kashmir, says it is un-Islamic

Terming it as an 'unislamic activity', the Jammu and Pakistan based terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba has issued a new diktat in the Banihal area banning people from watching television.
Taking a cue from the Taliban, the LeT terrorists are making sure that no one switches on their television. The terrorists are resorting to violence if any of the villagers defy their diktat.
Lashkar militants have warned villagers of dire consequences if they do not stop watching television. In a recently issued diktat, they have described the 'idiot box' as an epicentre of all problems and blame the same for impregnating evil thoughts in the mind of villagers.
In true Taliban style, the Lashkar men also pasted a pamphlet on the boundary wall of a mosque.
Security forces in the area describe the Lashkar's latest act as one of frustration and desperation. Television being a powerful medium of information and the only window to the world has always been on the target of the terrorists.

Nigeria police raid Muslim sect
Last Updated: Sunday, 16 August 2009, 8:55 GMT Previous Page
Nigerian police have raided an isolated Muslim community in the western state of Niger, taking more than 600 people into custody.
A team of 1,000 officers took part in the Saturday morning raid on the Darul Islam community, local media say.
Police say no weapons were found and there was no resistance to the arrests.
The raid comes in the aftermath of the violent uprising of the Boko Haram Islamist group last month in which hundreds of people died.
A BBC correspondent says the authorities may be taking this opportunity to disperse the Darul Islam (or House of Islam) community.
The settlement was established in the early 1990s to live according to strict Islamic principles, away from what they see as western decadence.
After the recent bloodshed involving Boko Haram in the northern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, Darul Islam came under official scrutiny.
One of the men taken away by the police told the BBC Hausa service they were being questioned at a secondary school in Makwa, the nearest town.
He said: "We have not eaten anything since we were brought here and we have women and children among us."
"It was a team of security officers including policemen and immigration officers, operating under the instruction of the federal police command, who came to our village."
The inclusion of immigration officers is important, according to Mannir Dan-Ali, editor-in-chief of the Nigerian newspaper Daily Trust.
"The authorities are trying to establish the identity and nationality of the members of the Darul Islam community," he says.
Mr Dan-Ali says those found not be from Niger state may be asked to return to their home states within Nigeria.
"Although the group have not been found to be engaged in anything against the law, the authorities appear to be keen to take this opportunity to disperse the community," he told the BBC.

Hamas crushes challenge by al-Qaida-inspired group
By IBRAHIM BARZAK (AP) – 1 day ago
RAFAH, Gaza Strip — The leader of an al-Qaida-inspired group in the Gaza Strip blew himself up during a shootout Saturday with Hamas security forces, ending hours of violence sparked by a rebellious sermon at a mosque near the Egyptian border.
At least 24 people were killed in clashes with the shadowy group, which posed one of the biggest challenges to Hamas since the militant group seized power in Gaza two years ago.
The fighting broke out Friday when Hamas security men surrounded a mosque in the southern Gaza town of Rafah on the Egyptian border where about 100 members of Jund Ansar Allah, or the Soldiers of the Companions of God, were holed up.
Flares lit up the sky overnight as Hamas machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades slammed into the mosque. The militants inside returned fire with automatic weapons and grenades of their own.
The head of the radical Islamic group, Abdel-Latif Moussa, detonated an explosives vest he was wearing when fighting resumed after dawn Saturday, said Ihab Ghussein, a Hamas Interior Ministry spokesman.
"The so-called Moussa has committed suicide ... killing a mediator who had been sent to him to persuade him and his followers to hand themselves over to the government," Ghussein said.
He said the fighting ended later in the morning.
Dr. Moaiya Hassanain of the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza said a total of 24 people, including six Hamas police officers and an 11-year-old girl, were killed and 150 were wounded.
The group's Web site vowed revenge: "We swear to God to avenge the martyrs' blood and we will turn their women into widows."
Hamas also confirmed the death in the fighting of one of its high-level commanders, Abu Jibril Shimali, whom Israel said orchestrated the capture three years ago of Sgt. Gilad Schalit, an Israeli soldier who is still being held by Hamas.
The fighting appeared to confirm Hamas' iron rule in Gaza despite a punishing Israeli and Egyptian blockade that keeps all but basic humanitarian supplies from entering the impoverished seaside territory.
It also underscored the group's determination not to allow opponents with differing ideologies to gain a foothold in Gaza. The Gaza Strip and the West Bank are together supposed to make up a future Palestinian state, but Hamas' bloody seizure of Gaza in 2007 created rival governments in the two territories — located on opposite sides of Israel — that are complicating Palestinian efforts to gain independence.
Jund Ansar Allah claims inspiration from al-Qaida's ultraconservative brand of Islam but no direct links have been confirmed.
The confrontation was triggered when the leader of the group defied Gaza's Hamas rulers by declaring in a Friday prayer sermon that the territory was an Islamic emirate.
Jund Ansar Allah and a number of other small radical groups seek to enforce an even stricter version of Islamic law in Gaza than that advocated by Hamas.
These groups are also upset that the Hamas regime has honored a cease-fire with Israel for the past seven months.
Hamas says it does not impose its religious views on others, but only seeks to set a pious example for people to follow.
Radical splinter groups such as Jund Ansar Allah call for a global jihad against the entire Western world, while Hamas maintains its struggle is only against the Israeli occupation.
"They are inspired by unbalanced ideologies and in the past they carried out a number of explosions targeting Internet cafes and wedding parties," said Ghussein, adding that the groups do not have any external ties.
The hard-line groups are perhaps the most serious opposition Hamas has faced since it seized control of Gaza and ousted its rivals in the Fatah movement in a five-day civil war in June 2007.
Hamas security blocked all roads to Rafah and declared the town a closed military zone. They said they have arrested about 40 members of the group so far.
Hamas is also investigating the launching of 11 homemade rockets from Gaza into Egypt on Friday. Only five of the rockets detonated, injuring a young girl, said Egyptian security forces.
Saeb Erekat, a senior peace negotiator with Israel and a member of the rival Fatah group in the West Bank, described the situation in Gaza as "alarming."
"Gaza is going down the drain in chaos and lawlessness," he told the AP.
Jund Ansar Allah first came to public attention in June after it claimed responsibility for a failed attempt to attack Israel from Gaza on horseback.
In July, three Muslim extremists from the group holed themselves up in a building in southern Gaza, surrendering to Hamas police only after a lengthy standoff.
It is unclear how many adherents Jund Ansar Allah or other similar extremist groups have in Gaza.

Jubilant Swatis say no to Taliban
Friday, August 14, 2009
Daud Khattak
MINGORA: Though seemed a figment of the imagination, it was reality as hundreds of jubilant Swatis, dancing, clapping and chanting slogans in support of the government and country’s armed forces converged at the Nishat Chowk not only to mark the Independence Day celebrations, but the routing of Taliban and return to their paradise after living for more than three months in camps.
A further boost to the confidence of the dwellers was observed when elected members of the NWFP assembly from Swat, though under strict police security, joined the people and responded to their slogans.
This is the first time in the past three years that the people were seen celebrating the Independence Day in such a befitting manner despite bitterly bruised by the presence of Taliban and their harsh tactics of violence during that period.
Green Chowk, the area once known as Khoony or bloody Chowk, where Taliban used to slaughter people and even did not spare women in their killing spree, was massed by hundreds of young and old men and even children to mark their celebrations over the return of peace in this city once known for its calm and peace all over the country.
This was the first time in the past several months that curfew relaxation was extended up to 11 pm. Though many people did not know about the relaxation and they got back to their houses before dusk. However, crowds of people were seen returning to the city main market from far-off areas till late night to join the celebrations.
Rallies of youth on foot, in cars, pick-up trucks and on motorbikes were seen marching through the streets of the city with playing music in loud voice while others dancing at the thump of drums fitted on the vehicles.
“We have many reasons to celebrate,” said a middle-aged man holding a six-year-old boy on his shoulders. “God rid of Taliban, we returned to our areas and curfew is relaxed. All these have added to our happiness of the Independence Day,” he added.
Almost all the important buildings, both government and private, were decorated with colourful lights and people at shops and in vehicles were playing music in loud voice.
Once turned into a dreaded city because of the presence of Taliban, Mingora was presenting a look of some area outside Pakistan. Army and police personnel were patrolling in their vehicles and waving to the people to join their celebrations.
Nishat Chowk, where thousands of people gathered to chant slogans in support of peace and against violence, were decorated with colourful lights. Groups of youth were coming from each side of the city and merge into the crowd to join the chorus ‘Pakistan Zindabad.’
“We can’t imagine this. This is the courage of the people who are coming out in such a large number and with such zeal and fervour despite seeing hundreds of beheadings, slaughtering and killing of innocent people,” said Usman Khan, resident of Gul Kada area of Mingora City.
“It is terrible....It is unbelievable,” said Abdullah, a medical student hailing from the same city. He said Mingora people used to celebrate the country’s Independence Day in befitting manners, “but this is the first time that I’m seeing such a zeal and fervour among the people.”
Locals said they did not celebrate the day in the past three years. To Abdullah, this is another independence, but this time from militants, who were out to impose their brand of Islam on the people of Swat.
The main function of the Independence Day celebrations will be held at the Wadudia Hall at the Wali-era Jehanzeb College. Ministers, MNAs, MPAs and dignitaries from all the four provinces are expected to join the ceremony.
Children of different schools will present national songs. It would be followed by a musical concert. A hockey match between Swat Green and Swat Red will be played at the Grassy Ground to mark the I-Day celebrations.
Officials said the chief minister NWFP and President Asif Ali Zardari are also expected to join the ceremony which is the grand function of the Independence Day.
Jubilant Swatis say no to Taliban

AHMEDABAD: A court in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar has preferred the sharia to the Criminal Procedure Code while sending a married Muslim girl to a remand
home to keep her away from her Hindu boyfriend. A higher court struck down the order within days.
Magistrate N P Saiyed said Shabana Rathod, 21, should spend time in a remand home for women as per the ‘‘Mohammedan law’’ of observing ‘iddat’ — a period of four months and ten days following a divorce or death of her husband, when a woman has to keep herself in isolation and not meet any man except her sons, brother or father.
Shabana got married to Altaf Hussain Saiyed, a resident of Vallabhipur in June, but left him for Jitendra alias Kano Bariaya after two months. Altaf filed a complaint of kidnapping but Shabana came to Vallabhipur police station within days, along with Jitendra, and promptly secured a divorce.
Soon after, Shabana’s mother Mumtaz filed a complaint saying her daughter was not following ‘iddat’. On July 29, the magistrate in an interim order asked Shabana to be kept at a Nari Sanrakshan Gruh for the period of ‘iddat’, turning down Shabana’s plea that since her marriage with Altaf was not consummated, ‘iddat’ was not applicable, as per sharia. Shabana filed a revision petition in Bhavnagar district court, saying her confinement was ‘‘illegal’’ and violative of Section 97 of CrPC. The sessions judge then stayed magistrate Saiyed’s order, observing that it was against the provisions of CrPC and Shabana was released on Tuesday after a two-week stay in the remand home.
The case will now be heard at Ahmedabad HC on September 1.

Arabs of Jewish Descent in Israel
by Hillel Fendel

(IsraelNN.com) Up to 85 percent of Arabs in greater Israel stem from Jewish ancestors, it is estimated. Some of them want to become fully Jewish, but most are scared to even talk about it.
“In our search for the lost Ten Tribes in India and Afghanistan, we seem to have forgotten to look for their descendants in our very own backyard.” So says the narrator in a new film about the efforts of a former hi-tech pioneer named Tzvi MiSinai to search out the Jewish roots of Israel's Arab enemies – and to inform them of their Judaic heritage.
Email readers please click here to see the video footage.
MiSinai has spent about a half-million shekels, he estimates, on these efforts. They include visiting dangerous places deep inside Palestinian Authority-controlled territory, hearing the stories of Arabs who remember observing Jewish customs, and distributing literature to Jews and Arabs alike.
One Arab says his father told him the secret of his family’s Jewishness on his deathbed, while another one, on the backdrop of a photo of the saintly Cabalistic sage Rabbi Abuchatzeira on his wall, says their roots have been known in his family for generations. Wrapping what apparently used to be kosher tefillin on his arm, he says, “My father used to do this, and he taught us to do it whenever someone was sick or in trouble.”
The Jews Who Didn't Leave
It is generally accepted that most Jews left the Land of Israel after the failed Bar Kokhba revolt in 135 CE. Yet many remained, and of these, many are still here, after having been forced to convert to Islam. “It turns out that a large part of the Arabs of the Land of Israel are actually descendants of forced converts to Islam over the years,” says Rabbi Dov Stein of the nascent Sanhedrin rabbinical council. “There are some studies that say that 85 percent of the Arabs in Israel are descended from Jews; others say there are fewer.”
Ben-Gurion Agrees
The claims are not new. Early Zionist leaders David Ben-Gurion and Yitzchak Ben-Tzvi wrote in a book 100 years ago: “If we investigate the origins of the Felahim, there is no doubt that much Jewish blood runs in their veins.” The authors implied that these Jews loved the Land so much that they were willing to give up their religion. The reference is probably to an edict in the year 1012 by Caliph el-Hakim, who ordered the non-Muslims to either convert or leave the Land of Israel. It is estimated that 90 percent of the Jews chose the former, though many continued to practice Judaism in secret. The decree was revoked 32 years later - apparently too late for about 75 percent of the converts.
Tzvi MiSinai continues to convince Arabs in Judea and Samaria that they are likely Jewish. The film shows him passing through the Gush Etzion checkpoint and distributing pamphlets both to Israeli soldiers – “so that you’ll know who you’re checking here” – and to the Arabs waiting there – “so that you’ll know who the majority of you are.” Asked by an Arab if he is from the peace movement, MiSinai answers, “Yes, yes, peace, so that we can live together as one nation.”
The Sawarka Bedouin Jews
One place where MiSinai has apparently found very strong Jewish roots is in the Bedouin tribe known as the Sawarka. There are about 3-4,000 of them throughout the Sinai and the Negev, and they “are all Jewish,” says a tribal leader in perfect Hebrew. With his face camouflaged for the cameras, the Bedouin says, “They had no choice but to convert; this was centuries ago… I remember my mother and grandmother wouldn’t light fire on Sabbath, and they had a special mikveh…”
Others, in a Bedouin village east of Hebron, also remember burning a small piece of dough (reminiscent of the Biblical command to separate a small piece of dough when baking bread), lighting candles at graves, and tearing clothes and sitting shiva for seven days, and not three as is Muslim practice.
Even today, ritual circumcisions are carried out after the seventh day of birth. Many homes in some of the Arab villages have doorpost indentations for a Mezuzah, with a scroll placed in some of them.
In another village just south of Hevron, Muhammed Amsalem – a descendant of Spanish Jews - told Aharon Granot of Mishpacha magazine that everyone in town knows he and his clan are Jews: “Our elders tell us that our forefathers came to this land during the [15th century] Spanish Inquisition, via Morocco. They settled in Ramle. Then the Mamluks forced them to convert to Islam, and they moved to the South Hevron area.”
Amsalem says they decided to reveal their Jewish roots after the 1967 Six Day War when they learned that a Jewish community had been reestablished in Hevron. “But the Jews saw we had no knowledge of their religious practices and refused to accept us… If the Jewish community would be willing to receive us today, we would join them with great enthusiasm.”
In the area of the South Hevron Hills, half of the Arabs are aware of the Jewish origins. They used to talk about it openly, though no longer. One man who recently publicized a silver Chanukah menorah that had been passed down to him from his father and previous generations was hung by terrorists by his feet for six weeks, leaving him with permanent injuries.
Genetic Studies Back Claims
At the Hadassah Medical School labs, Prof. Ariela Oppenheim of Hebrew University performed an international genetic study that backs up conclusions of Jewish-Arab genetic similarities. “We found that despite the dispersion of Jews around the world for 2,000 years, they essentially kept their Jewish continuity,” Oppenheim said. “In addition, we found that the Jewish population is surprisingly close, genetically, to the Arabs living here in Israel.”
She said that the study shows that both the Arabs of Israel and the Jews are descended from the Kurds of Aram in Babylon – the birthplace of the Patriarch Abraham.
“It’s clear that we’re all from the same family,” Oppenheim concludes. “Most unfortunately, however, there are conflicts even within families, and sometimes brothers fight as well. I wish this is what will bring the Redemption, but I’m very sad to say that I don’t think so.”
Some Want to Return to Observant Judaism
South of Hevron, in Yatta, there is a large formerly-Jewish presence – and some even want to return to active Judaism. It is widely known there that half the residents are of the originally-Jewish Mahamra clan – a name that means “winemaker,” a trade that is forbidden according to Islam. “The people in these areas converted to Islam later in history,” MiSinai says, “and therefore more customs and knowledge and artifacts have been preserved.” These include Jewish stars over the entrances to homes, while in at least one house, the family has hidden a mezuzah and tefillin in creative hiding spots. One man pulled out a small Hebrew booklet of Psalms and Tanya with which he says he continues to secretly pray.
Miro Cohen, a Jew from Tekoa, in eastern Gush Etzion, is very friendly with the Arabs in a nearby village known as Kawazbe – a name that he and they agree is merely a corruption of Kuzeiba, the original name of the famous Bar Kokhba.
“These people are the descendants of Bar Kokhba,” Cohen declares. One Arab sitting with him can count his ancestors eight generations back, ending with a grandfather named Kawazbeh. Another village elder says openly that his grandfather was a Jew who converted to Islam. Some of the residents want to return to Judaism; they don’t call it converting, because they are “already Jewish.” On the other hand, Arabs with the name Kawazbeh have been arrested for terrorist activity against Israel.
Other areas where Arabs of Jewish descent reside are Kfar Anzah in Samaria, Samoa in southern Judea, villages in the Tel Arad area, and more. Rabbi Stein says, “We know that up to about 200 years ago, the Galilee village of Sakhnin was a Jewish town, with an active synagogue. The Turks pressured them to convert to Islam, but the people there know that they are of Jewish origins.”

JEDDAH, 3 March 2007 — Another case of tribal incompatibility as a basis for intervening in a marriage and forcing the couple to divorce against their will has come to light.
This time, an Eastern Province couple, who go by the initials H.M. and A.O. to protect their identities, have been receiving harassing phone calls and threats from the family of A.O., led by an elder who firmly believes marriages must remain within the tribe.
“It was a daily nightmare,” said A.O., the wife who works as a public health specialist for a leading company. “No one stood by us.”
The couple have complained to police about intimidation, harassment and outright death threats by tribal members in Al-Hassa, led by a tribal elder.
The case is complicated by the fact that H.M. followed standard cultural procedures that included obtaining permission from A.O.’s legal guardian — her brother — and the wife’s mother (her father has passed away). Women of any age in Saudi Arabia require a legal male guardian who must be a family member.
Shortly after their marriage in December, the tribal elder in Al-Hassa appeared and objected to the marriage, claiming that all members of the tribe must marry inside the tribe. A.O. says she and her branch of the tribe had not heard from this man in years.
Still, this elder took action, filing an objection to the marriage at the Eastern Province municipality. Alkhobar authorities tried to resolve the conflict amicably, but the elder was insistent on the annulment of the marriage, which H.M. refused.
Then the threats began. Members of the tribe living in distant parts of the country began phoning threats. It appeared to be some kind of campaign organized by the tribal elder to threaten, harass and intimidate the couple. H.M., who works as the general manager of a large company in Alkhobar, said tribe members visited him at his workplace to make threats. Other members of A.O.’s family were also targeted with threats.
“These people had every intention of harming my wife and her brother and they made that very clear,” said H.M., who pointed out that some of the people making the threats and vulgar, highly offensive comments to A.O.’s mother are prominent government workers and college professors.
The couple have filed complaints regarding these harassments with police in Al-Hassa, but little has been done.
“We want to know who have been calling and sending those text messages because this is chaos and complete disrespect of the law,” said A.O.
They saved all the phone numbers and text messages, most of which were made through calling cards. But some were also made from home phones or mobiles. They submitted a list of suspected names behind these threats.
Meanwhile, A.O.’s mother’s health has been deteriorating and the couple decided the only way to stop the harassment of the mother was to file for divorce. H.M. signed the divorce papers in January.
“The main reason I decided to divorce is for the sake of my wife’s mother,” said H.M. to Arab News. “They were under so much pressure and it was taking a toll on her health and I was really starting to get concerned about them and if something happened to any of them I would never be able to forgive myself.”
The couple are now examining their options for seeking justice through the courts. However, recent reports of other high profile forced-divorce cases have given the couple little hope.
“I feared that the chances of winning a case are slim given that in similar cases the outcome was unfavorable. There is no clear and consistent ruling in these cases,” H.M. said.
H.M. was referring to the controversial Jan. 21 Court of Cassation (appeals court) ruling that upheld the decision of a lower court that forcibly divorced Fatima and Mansour Al-Timani at the request of Fatima’s half brothers. In that case, the divorce was sought based on tribal incompatibility.
Fatima’s family claims Al-Timani deceived them on his tribal background. They were divorced in absentia last year then later arrested for co-habiting outside of marriage.
Fatima languishes in an Eastern Province prison, unwilling to return to the custody of the family members who forced the divorce.
The couple have two children — one in prison with the mother and the other in custody with the father
