GENEVA - Some 12,000 people from Sudan’s Darfur region have crossed the border into neighbouring Chad after heavy bombardments and armed attacks by the Janjawid militia, the United Nations (UN) refugee agency said today.

The refugees have fled to the Birak region of southeastern Chad after attacks on Friday and Saturday by the Sudanese army and the Janjawid militia, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokeswoman Helene Caux told AFP.

Eastern Chad remains highly volatile after recent fighting between Chadian government and rebel forces, which led the UNHCR to evacuate staff from the country and thousands of Chadians to cross to neighbouring Cameroon, she said.

However, the fresh refugees from Darfur “have been through the worst already,” she added.

Her colleague Catherine Huck, who runs UNHCR’s operations in the Chadian eastern town of Abeche, stressed the difficulties that recent unrest in Chad itself have created for aid workers.

Last weekend saw rebels enter Njdamena and surround the presidential palace before retreating, leaving at least 160 people dead.

“We are already operating in an environment where security is spiralling downwards, where the supply line from NDjamena is cut after recent fighting, and where our field offices are running short of fuel,” Huck said in a statement.

“Getting newly arrived refugees away from the border into camps, is a real challenge,” she added.

The UNHCR is sending an assessment team to the region and hopes to move people by truck to existing camps for Darfur refugees today or tomorrow, she said.

Some 30,000 Darfur refugees already live in two camps in the Guereda area in eastern Chad, while a further 58,000 refugees are in three camps around Iriba.

Once safely in the camps, the newly arrived refugees will be given sleeping mats, blankets, jerry cans and kitchen sets, the UNHCR said.

The Sudanese army on Saturday confirmed its troops had carried out military operations in western Darfur and regained control of three communities, pushing out rebels to Chad.

“Army forces carried out large-scale operations combing the areas of Abu Suruj, Serba and Salia,” army spokesman Othman Mohammed al-Agbash told the official news agency SUNA, referring to areas in western Darfur.

The Justice and Equality Movement rebels said that Sudanese troops backed by Janjaweed militia had attacked the three communities north of Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, killing dozens of civilians on Friday.

JEM commander Abdel Aziz Nur al-Asher told AFP by telephone then that soldiers with 65 vehicles, backed by air support, launched the first attack alongside 600 Janjaweed fighters on camels.

He later said Sirba and Salia, also north of Geneina, had also come under attack, with Antonov fixed wing aircraft and combat helicopters taking part.

The latest unrest comes after a senior UN official warned on Friday that a reported proxy war between Sudan and Chad through rebel groups on each side of their border threatened to destabilise the region and lead to a wider conflict.

U.N. Envoy: Darfur Faces New Dangers Amid Chad Unrest

U.N. special envoy to Darfur Jan Eliasson painted a bleak picture of the war-torn Sudanese region Friday, warning that rebel groups had made only limited progress toward peace talks. In an interview, Eliasson details the latest developments in Darfur and explains how unrest in neighboring Chad may further inflame the crisis.

JIM LEHRER: Finally tonight, an update on Darfur, and to Margaret Warner.

MARGARET WARNER: It's been out of the headlines of late, but the conflict in the Darfur region of western Sudan continues to rage.

The toll: at least 200,000 dead, and 2.5 million forced from their homes.

Five years of fighting has pitted local black villagers and rebel commanders against Sudanese government forces and their proxy fighters, the mostly Arab Janjaweed militias.

The victims have been primarily civilians, driven from their villages, then intimidated -- and the women raped -- whenever they venture outside their refugee camps. The U.S. has called the killings of civilians "genocide."

The situation is now further complicated by a civil war in neighboring Chad, where hundreds of thousands of Darfurians are in refugee camps.

Today, the U.N. Security Council received an update from its special envoy for Darfur, veteran Swedish diplomat and former U.N. General Assembly President Jan Eliasson. He joins us from the U.N.

And, Mr. Ambassador, thank you for being with us.

JAN ELIASSON, U.N. Special Envoy to Darfur: Thank you for inviting me.

MARGARET WARNER: The update you presented today to the Security Council was pretty grim. You said at one point the situation is "veering out of control." How so?

JAN ELIASSON: Well, we have made some progress in getting the movements to consolidate. There were maybe anywhere between 10 and 20 movements to deal with earlier. Now we have five groupings.

MARGARET WARNER: These are the rebels?

JAN ELIASSON: Of the rebels, right, of the movements, resistance movements. But now the latest development on the ground has led to a very deteriorating security situation. And, of course, the events in Chad are also complicating our work severely.

MARGARET WARNER: Well, today, there was, of course, this attack that seemed to follow the old pattern. It was in western Darfur on two towns. According to witnesses, you had the Sudanese government helicopters and the Janjaweed militias on the ground working together to drive these people out.

But in general, have those systematic atrocities continued at the same pace? Or are the deaths now more attributed to malnutrition and other conditions like that?

Jan Eliasson
U.N. Special Envoy, Darfur

The problems of today are tribal clashes. And the problem of today is the anger, frustration, and desperation in the camps, with two million people in the camps waiting to go back to their homes.

Tribal clashes
JAN ELIASSON: The mass killings of 2003 to 2005 are behind us. These matters have to be pursued in different other ways.

The problems of today are tribal clashes. And the problem of today is the anger, frustration, and desperation in the camps, with two million people in the camps waiting to go back to their homes, and, lastly, the fact that many of the villages are taken over by people who do not own this land.

So we have, I would say, great dangers ahead if we don't deal with the political issues and deal with the root causes.

But what is today's most troubling matter is the fact that you have not only the fighting in western Darfur that you just referred to, but you also have, ever since November, incursions across the border of Chad and Sudan, and that has a direct effect on the whole climate in this area.

MARGARET WARNER: Now, how does the Chad, Sudan -- how do those tensions exacerbate the situation in Darfur? Explain that.

JAN ELIASSON: If you look at the borderline between Chad and Sudan, it's just one line. It's drawn up in Berlin, 1885. It doesn't take into account the fact that the tribal and ethnic lines go across those borders.

That means that the so-called Zaghawa tribe also has a great part of their population in Chad. And there have been competition and rivalry and negative developments in the relationship between Chad and Sudan.

And this means that you always -- you have had very destabilizing factor all the time at the borderline. And I have come to the conclusion, and so has Salim Salim, my co-negotiator from African Union, that you will not have peace in Darfur without a normalization between Chad and Sudan.

Jan Eliasson
U.N. Special Envoy, Darfur

If the people of Darfur see that the police come into the camps, if they see that their villages will have protection, then they will be able to return. Then they will see that the international community is on their side.

Political stalemate?
MARGARET WARNER: Now, let's go back to the brief you've been carrying, which is to try to get a political agreement within Darfur. You said today the prospects for that look quite dim, at least in the near or medium term. Explain why.

JAN ELIASSON: We want to have the unity among the movements, perhaps in terms of -- not in terms of them unifying as organizations, but at least unifying on the positions for the talks and identifying a negotiation team.

Out of the five movements with whom we are dealing, two are ready to go, but three are in doubt, and one or two has very serious reservations about the process.

For them to come to the negotiation table without a unified position is, of course, very, very difficult.

MARGARET WARNER: Now, the U.N. last July had authorized a peacekeeping force of some 26,000, yet, by your own account, there are still only 9,000 on the ground. What is the hang-up there?

JAN ELIASSON: Well, I am very sorry to see that this deployment is so slow. There have been several difficulties, and we now have only, as you said, 9,000 and expect to have 20,000 soldiers, peacekeepers, deployed this year, plus, which is very important, 5,000 police.

We need those forces on the ground very soon. We want all the nations now to really use their influence to make sure that we get a quick deployment and that these peacekeepers are in place, because they also provide to the population of Darfur a sense of security.

If the people of Darfur see that the police come into the camps, if they see that their villages will have protection, then they will be able to return. Then they will see that the international community is on their side.

So for me and Salim Salim, to put it very simply, we are waiting as impatiently as many people in the rest of the world do.

MARGARET WARNER: So is the problem that the international community isn't contributing the forces and the equipment that's needed or that the Sudanese government won't let them in?

JAN ELIASSON: It's been a combination of two, of the different factors. One, that certain nationalities have not been accepted, and I feel that is very deplorable, since once you are part of a U.N. or African Union force, you should forget about nationality.

But, secondly, also, some powers, some countries have been reluctant in contributing, particularly we need aerial transport capacity. We need helicopters, and these have not come forward.

So it's a combination of different factors, plus, of course, to move so many people to Darfur with very little infrastructure, roads, and places to stay and the need for water, it's a very difficult exercise.

But we have to speed it up, because it's politically extremely significant and, from a human perspective, absolutely necessary.

Jan Eliasson
U.N. Special Envoy, Darfur

All nations have to use their influence, and hopefully the governments themselves will draw the conclusion that it is in their enlightened self-interest to normalize relations.

Immediate peace needed
MARGARET WARNER: Now, you've laid out what all the problems are. What's the single most important thing that the U.N. should do right now if the parties aren't really ready to talk?

JAN ELIASSON: Well, I think we have to put the emphasis now on creating an environment, a climate which is conducive, which is positive for the talks. And that means we have to deal with this very, very difficult situation around Chad and Sudan.

I think all nations have to use their influence, and hopefully the governments themselves will draw the conclusion that it is in their enlightened self-interest to normalize relations. It's very damaging to both of them to have these ongoing incursions and hostility between Chad and Sudan.

Secondly, I think we need to have a cessation of hostilities immediately. What is going on now in western Darfur while we speak is horrible, and the situation can easily run out of control.

Once we then have the increasing deployment of peacekeepers on the ground, we can instill a sense of security among the population, a belief in the international presence and belief in the negotiations that we aim to start.

But I must admit it's a pretty dim picture now.

MARGARET WARNER: Are you going to stick with this?

JAN ELIASSON: Well, we will have to -- we have to do everything to bring about peace in Darfur. I was out there just three weeks ago. And normally I've seen the horrible conditions in the camps. That was bad enough.

But this time I went to areas which were under control of movements, and I was extremely depressed. You know, the women had to go two to three hours to get water, and it's typical it was the women who had to carry it.

The children had gray faces. And the school where I went, they had 12 or 13 books for the whole school, for 300 children. The market had only onions, no food that I could see. Horrible conditions, abject poverty.

And we have to understand that this peace is need for the development of Darfur. It has been a neglected province of the Sudan, and they have to get back on the road. They have gone through the most horrible nightmares.

And we have to, all of us, do everything we can to bring back normalcy and peace to the people of Darfur.

MARGARET WARNER: Ambassador Jan Eliasson, thank you so much.

JAN ELIASSON: Thank you.

JIM LEHRER: Ambassador Eliasson will take your questions about all of this in our online Insider Forum. To participate, just go to our Web site at PBS.org.

First church in Qatar since coming of Islam
"Worship allowed by Tradition of the Prophet"by Omar Elkeddi and Michel Hoebink

08-02-2008

The Arab emirate of Qatar witnesses the building of the first church since the coming of Islam. Conservative Muslims are furious, but the reform-minded emir of Qatar thinks it is time to show that Islam is a tolerant religion.

"If all goes well, we will celebrate Easter in our new church", says father Yashun of the almost completed church of the Virgin in the Qatari capital Doha. The Catholic church, which will open next month, is the first church to be built in Qatar since the coming of Islam 14 centuries ago.

Like other countries in the Arabian peninsula, Qatar does not have an indigenous non-Muslim minority, but among the guest-workers that have come there in the past decades are many Christians. The new church will serve no less than a hundred thousand Catholics residing in the tiny emirate, most of whom are from the Philippines, India and Lebanon. A Protestant church is also under construction.

Reform-minded
"A few years ago, opening a church in Qatar was sort of impossible", the Italian ambassador in Doha, Ignatio Di Pashi, recently told a local Qatari newspaper. "But Qatar has changed since the coming of the new emir."

Prince Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani is a reform-minded man who, when he came to power in 1995, decided it was time to show the tolerant face of Islam and to accommodate the new Christian minority in his country.

Since 2001, a yearly 'Conference of the 3 Religions" is held in Qatar during which representatives of Judaism, Christianity and Islam engage in dialogue. Dialogue between Muslims and Christians is rather common in the Arab world, but a religious dialogue including Jews is revolutionary.

And in 2005, the emir announced that churches would be built for the Christians in Qatar, who until today have to conduct their religious services in private homes or schools.

Wahhabi
The building of the church has shocked conservative Muslims of Qatar and has led to heated debates in the local media. Most Qatari Muslims belong to the Wahhabi sect, one of the most conservative currents in Islam and the state-doctrine in neighbouring Saudi Arabia.

Opponents of the church quote a Tradition attributed to the prophet Mohammed which reads: "There shall be no two religions in the Arabian peninsula." Alluding to this Tradition, articles have appeared in the local press bearing titles such as "No cross shall be raised under the sky of Qatar and no church-bell shall ring!"

Basic right
But advocates of the church, too, support their views with religious arguments. One of them is Dr Abdelhamid al-Ansari, former dean of the Qatari shari'a college. "Establishing places of worship for different religions", he writes in one of his articles in favour of the building of churches in his country, "is a basic right guaranteed to all human beings by the Koran and the Tradition of the prophet." Dr Ansari also recognizes the prophetic Tradition quoted by his opponents, but says it only applies to the Hijaz, the province of the two holy cities of Islam Macca and Medina.

Another Qatari shaykh, Ali al-Qardaghi, went even further by assuring a French reporter that Islam does not prohibit the building of churches "nor any other places of worship." His statement is significant because traditional Islam indeed explicitly grants all kinds of rights to Christians and Jews - the so-called 'people of the Book' - but has great difficulty in recognizing the beliefs of Hindus and Buddhists as 'religious.' And after all a large section of the guest workers in Qatar are not Christians but Hindus from India.

No cross
The church, which costs 18 million dollars, will contain a conference hall, a library, accommodation for clerics and a café. But it will have no cross on the outside and the catholic cardinal heading it had to promise the authorities that he will not engage in missionary activities.

Exclusivism--The Mind Virus From Hell

Exclusivism and just how to perpetuate that specialness is a hallmark mindset and goal of most religious faiths. It is a mind virus that seems to be rearing it's rather ugly head again. One way, one belief, easily defined rights and wrongs, one law, and one common acceptable mind virus will provide all the comfort and security we need. The Bible in our culture is often misread and misapplied to perpetuate more harm than good. It's what exclusivists do best.

Most religions, denominations and even rival churches of the same denomination but with slightly different practices, teach that they are the one true path to salvation and all others will simply suffer the fates. I live and work close to Bob Jones University, where being consigned to hell for non compliance is an art form. Around here it is not uncommon to read "Love Jesus, or burn forever in Hell." Try that one one on your kids. "Love Daddy, or I will kill you." That's child abuse isn't it??? Ask a Bob Jones student what they believe and it usually comes out in some form of "whatever they say."

When intolerant fundamentalists. who are infected with exlusivism speak, the goal is to spread the virus and get others to agree and support it's propagation. Once you are in, everyone not in, is out, and the virus then endeavors to become immune from attack through bluster, fear, shame and guilt. I recently tried to read a copy of the Philadelphia Trumpet, but gave up and opted for chewing ground glass which felt ever so much more pleasant.

Tell one of God's chosen they are biblically ignorant and watch what happens. So many sincerely misguided Christians and ministers are piously convicted, to be sure, but marginally informed in their education and perspectives.

While preaching exclusivism, they tend to leave out the being ignorant of the bible part. Tell one of God's chosen they are biblically ignorant and watch what happens. Too bad the being more like Jesus and less like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Malachi, Elijah and Paul never really caught on in the many prophecy motivated and obcessed churches and denominations. The "we only" mentality is responsible for much of the division in Christianity today. Christianity seems to thrive on division for multiplication.

So how does exclusivism work? What must happen for it to be successful?

First of all it must do two things. It must ensure it can take up a long term residence in the host (Membership or maybe Meme-bership). A meme is an idea that is passed on from one human generation to another. It's the cultural equivalent of a gene, the basic element of biological inheritance. The term was coined in 1976 by Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene. Secondly, it must bring about the proper conditions for spreading itself (Evangelism).

This is how it is done:

1. Promise reward for the effort, position, power, inside knowledge and specialness. It's better if the reward is "some day."

2. Threaten punishment for failure to grow, or pay, pray, stay and obey. This can take place almost any time now and/or in the future.

3. Convince them they are the chosen, exclusive and special people. Teach them that all others are false and there is only ONE right way to think or faith to express. Teach them that right way just happens be where they are.

4. Disable their ability to challenge or disbelieve the information given. Lower their immunity. Faith is superior to reason. "The wisdom of man is foolishness with God."

5. Establish a library of true literature and correct answers, for the faithful and discourage reading outside of this one true source, usually provided by the chief virus and his team of pathogens.

Once the parasite has been injected into the host, it will need to propagate itself or the virus will die. Follow these steps.

1. Emotionally, spiritually, psychologically or literally kill all immune persons. If you can't infect them, eliminate them.

2. Those you can't kill... intimidate and discriminate against. In religion, this is being disfellowshipped, demoted, censored or made to bring the watermelon to the picnic. Isolate them because such people, if not held in isolation can pass on immunity and resistance to the virus.

3. Encourage true believers to breed faster than false ones. Evangelism is a great tool for this.

4. Censor incoming information and remember to repeat "the wisdom of man is foolishness with God."..often, along with a lot of other scriptures that promote blind obedience. Most of these will be found in the Epistles of Paul.

5. Be prepared to give out disinformation and spread lies about your rivals. Demonise them. And remember, the bigger the lies, the louder you shout it at church and the more seriously concerned you appear for the welfare of the members, the more successful you will be.

Exclusivism is really a rather evil mind set. Us vs. them, Me vs. You, Chosen vs. unchosen, Christian vs. Pagan, True vs. False as defined by one government, organization or person over another, is never going to turn out right.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The images in the Basra police file are nauseating: Page after page of women killed in brutal fashion -- some strangled to death, their faces disfigured; others beheaded. All bear signs of torture.

Police chief Gen. Abdul Jalil Khalaf holds a book cataloging the dead.

1 of 3 The women are killed, police say, because they failed to wear a headscarf or because they ignored other "rules" that secretive fundamentalist groups want to enforce.

"Fear, fear is always there," says 30-year-old Safana, an artist and university professor. "We don't know who to be afraid of. Maybe it's a friend or a student you teach. There is no break, no security. I don't know who to be afraid of."

Her fear is justified. Iraq's second-largest city, Basra, is a stronghold of conservative Shia groups. As many as 133 women were killed in Basra last year -- 79 for violation of "Islamic teachings" and 47 for so-called honor killings, according to IRIN, the news branch of the U.N.'s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

One glance through the police file is enough to understand the consequences. Basra's police chief, Gen. Abdul Jalil Khalaf, flips through the file, pointing to one unsolved case after another. Watch Khalaf show evidence of the brutality »

"I think so far, we have been unable to tackle this problem properly," he says. "There are many motives for these crimes and parties involved in killing women, by strangling, beheading, chopping off their hands, legs, heads."

"When I came to Basra a year ago," he says, "two women were killed in front of their kids. Their blood was flowing in front of their kids, they were crying. Another woman was killed in front of her 6-year-old son, another in front of her 11-year-old child, and yet another who was pregnant."

The killers enforcing their own version of Islamic justice are rarely caught, while women live in fear.

Boldly splattered in red paint just outside the main downtown market, a chilling sign reads: "We warn against not wearing a headscarf and wearing makeup. Those who do not abide by this will be punished. God is our witness, we have notified you."

The attacks on the women of Basra have intensified since British forces withdrew to their base at the airport back in September, police say. Iraqi security forces took over after British troops pulled back, but are heavily infiltrated by militias.

And tracking the perpetrators of these crimes is nearly impossible, Khalaf says, adding that he doesn't have control of the thousands of policemen and officers.

"We're trying to trace crimes carried out by an anonymous enemy," he says.

Amnesty International has raised concern about the increasing violence toward women in Iraq, saying abductions, rapes and "honor killings" are on the rise.

"Politically active women, those who did not follow a strict dress code, and women [who are] human rights defenders were increasingly at risk of abuses, including by armed groups and religious extremists," Amnesty said in a 2007 report.

Sometimes, it's just the color of a woman's headscarf that can draw unwanted attention.

"One time, one of my female colleagues commented on the color of my headscarf," Safana says. "She said it would draw attention ... [and I should] avoid it and stick to colors like gray, brown and black."

This extremist ideology enrages many secular Muslim women, who say it's a misrepresentation of Islam.

Sawsan, another woman who works at a university, says the message from the radicals to women is simple: "They seem to be sending us a message to stay at home and keep your mouth shut."

After the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, Sawsan says, the situation was "the best." But now, she says, it's "the worst."

"We thought there would be freedom and democracy and women would have their rights. But all the things we were promised have not come true. There is only fear and horror." E-mail to a friend

Three killed in riots over Mohammed's caricature: police

Three persons including a police officer were killed after Muslim students rioted over a caricature of Prophet Mohammed by their Christian colleagues, police and teachers said Friday.

Students of Government Secondary School Sumaila, some 76 kilometres (47 miles) south of the northern city of Kano, went on the rampage late Thursday, after a Christian student suspended for two weeks returned to the school.

He had been suspended for having drawn a caricature of the Prophet and posted it on a wall inside the school.

"Two people and a police inspector have been killed in the violence while the divisional police station and everything inside including ammunition have been burnt by the rioters", Kano police chief Aminu Yesufu told reporters outside the burnt police station.

He said aAbout 20 others were badly wounded, including the divisional police officer, who suffered a deep machete cut to the head.

Police had arrested 25 people and opened an investigation, he added.

"The students began chanting Allahu Akbar (God is the greatest) when the Christian student returned and pursued him to lynch him", Sadiq Haruna, a teacher at the school, told an AFP reporter who visited the town on Friday.

"The Christian escaped in taking refuge in the local police station but hundreds of angry Muslim students attacked and set on fire the premises after the police refused to hand him over," Haruna said.

The whereabouts of the christian student were still not known.

This is the second time in a week in the mainly Muslim northern Nigeria that an allegation of blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed has sparked violent protests and an attack on the police.

On Thursday last week police shot dead one rioter during rioting irate Muslim youth in the city of Yana (Bauchi state) over alleged blasphemy by a Christian woman.

According to Bauchi police chief, Adnan Tolman Gaya, Yana police shot into the crowd to disperse a mob that calling for the lynching of the women who besieged and burnt the police station. The woman escaped unhurt.

After the death of the youth, the other rioters went on rampage and looted houses of policemen in town and burnt shops belonging to christians.

The police station was also burned down during the unrest. Officers arrested 44 people.

The tension between the Christian and Muslim communities is particularly high in the north of Nigeria and periodically flares up into violence.

In a message to his son Vikas Amte, the governor said that Baba Amte belonged to the shining traditions of Vidarbha's social reformers and saints that included Rashtra Sant Tukdoji Maharaj and Sant Gadge Baba among others.

Baba Amte dedicated his entire life to the cause of restoring dignity to leprosy victims and enabled them to earn their own livelihood.

Islamic fanatic 'wanted to groom his three-year-old daughter to marry a terrorist'
Last updated at 16:28pm on 7th February 2008

Parviz Khan allegedly hoped his three-year-old daughter would marry a terrorist
The fanatic who plotted to kidnap and behead a British soldier wanted his three-year-old daughter to marry a jihadi terrorist, a court heard.

Terrorist cell leader Parviz Khan, 37, was secretly recorded in his home telling friend Zahoor Iqbal how the toddler talked about cooking food for the "men in the mountains" .

Khan added: "Inshallah (God willing) - she'll marry into them and give birth to them".

But Iqbal, who is on trial accused of helping Khan send equipment to be used by extremists in Afghanistan, denied Khan was talking about Mujahideen insurgents.

Nigel Rumfitt, QC, prosecuting, told him: "That is as sick as it gets.

"He wants his three-year-old daughter to marry Mujahideen terrorists and give birth to more of them.

"That is what he is training her to want by asking her what she will cook for them in the mountains."

But Iqbal told the jury at Leicester Crown Court that Khan meant he wanted his daughter to marry an Afghan mountain villager.

Iqbal added that he never suspected Khan was sending equipment to Al-Qaeda terrorists fighting coalition forces and instead thought the shipments were for earthquake relief.

"All I saw were fleeces and thermals .l never saw any radar detectors or night vision equipment," he claimed. Iqbal also told the jury that he did not take Khan seriously when he talked about terrorism.

"I thought he was a fantasist," Iqbal said, "His mindset and mental state had changed.

"It was just him talking and I went along with it."

Khan has admitted being the mastermind behind an "evil" plot to abduct a Muslim British soldier and behead him "like a pig" in a lock-up garage.

He planned to snatch his intended victim with the help of drug-dealers as the target was enjoying an night out before murdering him on film.

Footage of the "ghastly" killing would then be released "to spread fear among the armed forces and public", the jury has been told.

Khan was the "hub" of a cell whose main purpose was to send supplies to Pakistan for use by terrorists fighting coalition forces in Afghanistan.

But he concocted his plot to kidnap a squaddie from the streets of Birmingham because he was "enraged" that there were Muslims in the British army.

The plan was scuppered when police and members of the security services swooped on Khan last January after secretly bugging his terraced home.

Zahoor Iqbal denies helping Khan with his plot
The jury has been told Khan has admitted engaging in conduct with the intention to commit acts of terrorism between April 2006 and February 2007.

He also admits supplying equipment for use in terrorism and possessing a document likely to be useful in committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

Iqbal, Perry Barr, Birmingham, denies engaging in conduct with the intention of assisting in the commission of acts of terrorism.

The 30-year-old also denies possessing a document or record likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

Khan, Alum Rock, Birmingham, allegedly enlisted two other men, Amjad Mahmood and Basiru Gassam, to identify a soldier for his plot.

Shopworker Mahmood, denies a charge of failing to disclose information relating to an act of terrorism.

The 32-year-old, who worked near Khan's home, also denies engaging in conduct with the intention of assisting in the commission of acts of terrorism.

Gassama, 30,of Hodge Hill, Birmingham, has pleaded guilty to failing to disclose information relating to an act of terrorism.

Two other Muslim men who are alleged to have been members of Khan's terrorist cell were also charged with terrorism-related offences.

Hamid Elasmar, 44, Edgbaston, Birmingham, has admitted engaging in conduct with the intention of assisting in acts of terrorism.

The jury has been told 31-year-old Mohammed Irfan, of Ward End, Birmingham, has also pleaded guilty to the same charge.

Egyptian FM threatens to break Palestinians' legs if they breach border again
The Associated PressPublished: February 7, 2008

CAIRO, Egypt: Egypt's foreign minister said that no further violations of its borders would be tolerated in the wake of a 12-day breach of its frontier with Gaza and said anyone daring to cross would have their legs broken, the state news agency reported.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit also met on Thursday with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State David Welch and discussed the situation in Gaza and efforts to push forward the peace talks.

Welch said that the border crisis was not Egypt's fault and a system had to be instituted to get the situation under control and avoid a repetition of the recent problems.

The earlier, uncharacteristically assertive, remarks by Aboul Gheit came during a late night Wednesday interview on state television, in which he criticized both Israel and the militant Hamas movement for creating the unstable situation on Egypt's border.

"Anyone who violates Egypt's borders will get his leg broken," Aboul Gheit was quoted as saying. He added that Egypt only allowed the Palestinians to cross the border after Hamas blew up the wall because of fears over the humanitarian situation resulting from Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip.

He blamed Israel for the humanitarian crisis and hardship that Gaza is experiencing, and for "responding to the Palestinian (Hamas) missiles with collective punishment."

He also criticized Hamas for launching those missile attacks, describing the confrontation as a "laughable caricature" resulting in self-inflicted wounds.

"After Hamas's take over of Gaza, it has decided to clash with Israel, though this clash seems to be a laughable caricature, because clashing with an opponent in battle is supposed to mean damaging them," he said. "You do not go into battle just to damage yourself."

He noted that Hamas' missiles either fall back in Gaza and injure Palestinians or give the Israelis a pretext to attack them.

The Egyptian's remarks drew a quick response from a Hamas' leader in Gaza, Sami Abu Zuhri, who called them "inappropriate" and said he did not believe they reflected the official Egyptian stance.

"All we want is an open border crossing," Abu Zuhri said. "Instead of making these threats against the Palestinian people, he (Aboul Gheit) should voice his anger against the Israeli occupation, which is what is closing the border crossings between Gaza and Egypt."

After 12 days during which Palestinians stocked up on food fuel and consumer products, Egypt re-closed the border pending a return to the 2005 international monitoring agreement involving Israeli and EU monitors.

Hamas rejects the agreement and has called for a role in controlling the border. Since the closure, Palestinians have clashed with Egyptian border guards.

Apparently seeking to cast a more favorable light on the strained relations between Egypt and the militant Gaza rulers, Abu Zuhri said Hamas was "in daily contact with the Egyptian brothers in order to find a solution for the problem of the border crossing."

Hamas: We’re Allowed to Lie

(IsraelNN.com) Hamas leaders spoke to the Arabic language Ash-Sharq il-Awsat newspaper recently and explained that as Muslims, they are allowed to lie. In an interview printed on Thursday, senior Hamas terrorists explained, “A Muslim is permitted to say things that oppose his beliefs in order to prevent damages or to be saved from death.”

This approach, known in Arabic as “taqiyya,” was behind several Hamas leaders’ recent public expression of support for Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, they explained. Senior Hamas terrorists in Samaria, who were recently released from jail, publicly expressed disapproval with the Hamas takeover of Gaza and said they supported the PA forces. The sources quoted in Ash-Sharq il-Awsat explained that the Samarian terrorists’ announcement was not a sign of dissent within Hamas ranks, but rather a permitted use of “taqiyya” to deceive Abbas and avoid prison sentences.

NDF behind CPI(M) activist murder : DIG

KANNUR: DIG of Kerala Police confirmed the hand of NDF terrorists behind the murder of CPI(M) activist Jijesh last week at Thallassery. Senior police officials in Kannur had already disclosed that the RSS and BJP had no role in the murder of Jijesh and that it was the handiwork of NDF fundamentalists.

BJP state president P K Krishnadas has said that Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and the Kannur district secretary of the CPM, P Sasi should make a public apology to the people for placing the RSS on the dock in the murder of their party worker Jijesh, in the wake of the revelation made by the DIG that it was the NDF behind the murder.

It has now become a common practice to blame Hindu organisations for any murder or crime committed by Communist criminals and NDF Terrorists. This dirty game to tarnish the image of Sangh Pariwar will act back as a catalyst for the resurgence of Hindutva. Thumping Support Sangh receives from Hindus in Communist forts are pointing towards this fact.

BJP hartal in Palakkad passes off in full measure

Pioneer News Service | Palakkad

The 24-hour hartal called by the BJP in Palakkad was complete and went off barring two untoward incidents. Stones were pelted at some interstate lorries damaging some and injuring two persons.

The hartal was called by the BJP following the Home Department's decision to foster cases under Goonda Act against BJP and RSS workers following the recent killings of two CPI-M men allegedly at the hands of the BJP workers.

The BJP leaders claimed that the Home Department is behaving as an offshoot of the CPI-M district committee and that false cases are being fabricated against the BJP leaders and workers in connection with the murders.

The names were cleared from the CPI-M local offices.

The hartal which was called for 24 hours was total and complete. While the party had announced that essential services will be let off from the hartal, there were not much vehicles seen plying on the roads.

The BJP leaders took out processions in the city following the hartal call and leaders also addressed the gathering and thanked the people for the success of the strike.

BJP leaders said that the people of the district has given a fitting warning to the Government over its over indulgence in foisting cases against political opponents and added that the party would be forced to move ahead with other agitation programmes if the Home Department is not going back on its move to charge the BJP and RSS leaders with false cases and framing charges to put the leaders under the Goonda Acts.

The BJP which has strong political presence in the district and took this extreme step following the police atrocities and the torture of the party workers and local leaders with false cases registered against them.

Four Islamic student association activists held in Kannur

Pioneer News Service | Kannur

The Police arrested four youths who were trying to destroy the flex boards hosted in connection with the festival of a local temple near Bekal in Kasargod district .On interrogation the youths revealed that they were members of the Islamic Student association which is an organization not having much activity in the state Intelligence sources revealed that the Islamic student organization or ISA is an off shoot of a Kashmir based organization and that the youths may have received training from across the border

The Pioneer had reported earlier that some Islamic camps are functioning in the Kerala -Karnataka border near to Coorg and the recent arrest of Mohammed Ghouse from another Islamic camp in Hubli and his revelations have given sleepless nights for the forces in the four southern states.

The police are tight lipped on the identity of the youths but highly placed sources told The Pioneer that a thorough investigation is on to extract the details of these youths and the clandestine activities in which they were possibly involved.

The youths are all in their early twenties and the interrogation is on to extract as to whether they have received the four layer of training which is mandatory for the hardline Jihadis.

The arrest of Pakistani citizen Fahad from Mysore and his revelations that he had stayed in Kozhikode as the guest of his fathers relatives had sent shock waves across the spine of the state police .The Police is still not in a position to ascertain as to how much damage he had committed in the state during his stay in Kozhikode

The police is also baffled at the growth of an Islamist organization which is amassing wealth and is in the process of acquiring prime properties for spreading their work and there are reports of the presence of some hardliners in this organization who have some connections which should be probed deeply by the Indian Intelligence agencies

The Police is also interrogating some former activists of a banned Islamic organization and sources in the force revealed that these are routine questioning to ascertain whether these youths had any contact with these people .These youths are not in touch with the Islamist groups of late as they feel that they are of the feeling that over indulgence in such cases would lead to them jeopardizing their student carriers.

While most of the youths who are indoctrinated into the terror getaway are from ordinary ,poor or middle class backgrounds recently the police was taken by surporse on the presence of some filthy rich youths who wanted to loose their lives for some causes which they find would match the aspirations of their souls.

The state police is also on a sticky wicket as far as the sophisticated modern day investigations are concerned .The police is now in the process of modernization and it seems that the plans to total computerization of all the police stations using the GPS facility in place would give added advantage to the state police in tackling crime.

Iran: Two sisters face execution by stoning
Posted: 07 February 2008

Amnesty International today warned that two sisters, Zohreh and Azar Kabiri-niat are facing execution by stoning, for "adultery', in Iran. Amnesty International members in the UK and around the world are calling on the authorities to commute the sentences of death by stoning immediately.

The women were arrested on 4 February 2007 after Zohreh Kabiri-niat's husband filed a complaint against her and her sisters, Azar and Azzam, and also Azar's husband, Mohammadreza Bodaghi, and another man. He claimed that they had had 'illicit relations' and submitted as evidence video footage from a camera he had secretly installed in his house, which reportedly showed the two women with another man.

The five were tried in March 2007 and sentenced to flogging for "having illicit relations"; Zohreh also received five years' imprisonment for forming 'a centre of corruption'. But after the floggings were carried out, fresh charges of "committing adultery while being married" were brought against Zohreh and Azar Kabiri-niat. On 6 August 2007. Both were found guilty and were sentenced to death by stoning.

The charge of "adultery" was substantiated solely by the judge's 'knowledge', based on the video evidence and statements the sisters had made during their interrogation. Zohreh Kabiri-niat later said, "I do not accept my 'confessions' under interrogations, and I deny whatever it is that they claim I said."

Zohreh and Azar Kabiri-niat lodged an appeal but the Supreme Court judges rejected their lawyer's defence that the women denied the offence, that the video evidence did not actually show the women having sex, and that they had not confessed four times before the judge as is required by Islamic law. The court confirmed the initial verdict of stoning to death, and ruled that it be sent to the appropriate authorities for implementation.

A new lawyer representing the women told journalist Marjan Lagha'i that, "the case has fundamental problems, since a person can not be tried twice for the same crime. Yet these two sisters have been tried twice in the same case, and two sentences have been issued for them... the circumstances that are required to prove adultery - confession by the accused on four different occasions that can be corroborated by the testimony of four eyewitnesses to the alleged crime - are entirely absent, and there is absolutely no legal document in this case that a judge can use to issue a stoning sentence... Given that I view this sentence to be against the principles of Sharia, as well as the criminal laws [of Iran], I have filed an official objection, and I have asked that the Head of Judiciary review the case once again."

Background
Amnesty International welcomes moves in Iran towards reforming the law on stoning, but urges that any new legislation permits neither stoning nor any other form of execution for "adultery while being married".

A moratorium on execution by stoning was ordered by the Head of the Judiciary, Ayatollah Shahroudi, in December 2002. Despite this, sentences of death by stoning in Iran are still being passed and, on occasion, carried out.

Anti-stoning campaigners have reported that the first stonings since the moratorium was imposed took place in May 2006, when a woman, Mahboubeh, and a man, Abbas, were stoned to death in a cemetery in the city of Mashhad for murdering Mahboubeh's husband, and for "adultery". Part of the cemetery was cordoned off from the public, and more than 100 members of the Revolutionary Guard, and members of the Basij Forces were among those who stoned the couple to death. In July 2007, a man, Ja'far Kiani, was stoned to death in Aghcheh-kand; the authorities later said this was a 'mistake'. Mokarremeh Ebrahimi, with whom he had two children and who was sentenced with him, is still under sentence of death by stoning.

In mid-2006, a group of Iranian human rights defenders began a campaign to abolish stoning. Since the Stop Stoning Forever campaign began, five people have been saved from stoning. Others have been granted stays of execution, and some of the cases are being reviewed or re-tried. Eleven women (including Zohreh and Azar Kabiri-niat) and two men are known to be under sentence of death by stoning. Activists in the campaign have faced persecution.

A new version of the Iranian Penal Code is currently under consideration by the Majles, which, if passed, would appear to allow for stoning sentences to be changed to execution by other means or flogging.

Ayatollah focuses on family advice
By BORZOU DARAGAHILos Angeles Times

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- The ayatollah has a simple piece of advice for any Muslim woman being abused by her husband: Hit him back.

"A woman can respond to physical violence inflicted on her by a man with counter-violence as a self-defense measure," wrote Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, Lebanon's most senior Shiite cleric, in a fatwa late in 2007 that shocked conservative Muslims around the world.
Fadlallah long has been considered a leader of the most radical faction of Shiite Muslims in Lebanon. He endorsed Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's Islamic Revolution in Iran and was accused of ordering, or at least encouraging, the 1983 bombings of the U.S. Marines barracks here, a charge that he and his supporters have denied.

He issued fatwas, or religious edicts, calling on the faithful to resist the U.S. and urged Muslims to boycott American products.

But the 72-year-old cleric, who agreed to an interview recently in his South Beirut compound, has toned down his rhetoric in recent years. Instead, he espouses a more modest vision for the faithful than the ambitious agenda set forth by Iran, which considers itself the patron of Shiites worldwide.

"I don't see there is a unity in the situation of Shiites in the world," Fadlallah said.

He focuses on issues of concern to his followers, such as parenting.

"One of the general principles in raising children is that parents should not consider their child as part of their possessions," he wrote in a ruling translated and placed on the English section of his Web site, english.bayynat.org.lb.

"Instead, they should consider him God's trust that Allah...has put in their hands. This is done by loving the child, listening to him and respecting his mind."

Grand ayatollahs have the right to interpret primary religious texts and serve as "marja," or source of emulation, for their millions of followers. Khomeini espoused a highly politicized version of Islam; Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani in Iraq advocates piety, modesty and good deeds.

Fadlallah's fatwas and statements seem more like daytime talk-show fodder.

On gender issues, he takes positions that raise eyebrows among his conservative counterparts, such as questioning the conventional Islamic prohibition on female judges and challenging the traditional view that a woman's place is in the house and the man's in the workplace.

"The belief that it is disgraceful for the man to manage household tasks is derived from the social culture and not from Islam," according to a statement on his Web site.

A statement from Fadlallah's office said he opposed a man "using any sort of violence against a woman, even in the form of insults and harsh words."

"Mostly his fatwas are on the side of modernity and progress," said Fawwaz Traboulsi, a Lebanese historian. "He's very influential and he's got a lot of money."

Fadlallah's most liberal rulings and attempts to distance Lebanese Shiites from Iran's policies have angered some Shiite clerics close to the Islamic militant group Hezbollah and its leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah. Fadlallah was once Hezbollah's spiritual leader, but now the two camps compete for donations from wealthy Shiites.

Fadlallah appears to have eased his anti-American stances. He is strongly critical of the Bush administration, but takes pains to underscore that he's not anti-American. But Fadlallah remains a staunch critic of Israel, once describing the Jewish state as "a conglomerate of people who come from all parts of the world to live in Palestine on the ruins of another people."

Starbucks leads to strip-search for Saudi woman
Agence France-Presse
First Posted 21:13:00 02/05/2008

RIYADH -- Saudi Arabia's religious police detained and strip-searched a woman for sitting in a Starbucks coffeeshop with a male work colleague who is not a member of her family, Arab News reported on Tuesday.

The 40-year-old financial consultant, named only as Yara, told the paper she was arrested on Monday by members of the powerful Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

She was holding a business meeting with the man in a branch of Starbucks in Riyadh, in a section reserved for families as is the rule in Saudi Arabia where unrelated members of the opposite sex are segregated in public, she said.

Yara said she was taken to a Riyadh prison, strip-searched and forced to sign a confession to having been caught alone with a unrelated man -- an illegal act in the kingdom which enforces a strict Islamic moral code.

"I had no other choice" but to sign, said the married mother of three. "I was scared for my life... I was afraid that they would abuse me or do something to me."

She said the religious police, known as the Muttawa, released her several hours later after her husband, Hatim, intervened. "I look at this as if she had been kidnapped by thugs," said Hatim.

The paper said the man with whom Yara had coffee, an unnamed Syrian financial analyst, was also arrested and remains in custody.

Saudi Arabia's 5,000-strong religious police have been investigated over a number of deaths that occurred while they raided homes or kept people in custody.

The interior ministry issued a decree in May 2006 aimed at reining in the Muttawa by requiring them not to interrogate detained suspects, as they had previously done, but to hand them over to the regular police instead.

A United Nations report released on Friday said that women in the conservative Muslim state are the victims of systematic and pervasive discrimination across all aspects of social life.

Maharashtra govt. should take action: BJP
Mumbai (PTI): Lashing out at the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for triggering violence in the city for "political gains", the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday asked the Congress-led Maharashtra government to take stern steps to stop it.

"The attacks on people from specific community is meant to gain electoral advantage which the BJP would not allow at any cost," said Mumbai BJP President Prakash Mehta.

Both the Samajwadi Party as well as the MNS are trying to incite people for their own gains. In this process if the law and order situation deteriorates, the responsibility rests solely on the SP, MNS and the Democratic front government.

He said the BJP condemns the clashes and demands strong action against the perpetrators.

YEMEN: Hear Our Voices: "I hate my classmates calling me a servant"
05 Nov 2006 13:59:37 GMT
Source: IRIN

SANAA, 5 November (IRIN) - Akhdam [servants in Arabic] are, as the rest of Yemen's population, Arabic-speaking Muslims but because they do not belong to any of the three main Arab tribes that make up traditional Yemeni society, they are the lowest social caste in the country. They are marginalised and face economic hardship although the government says that it does not discriminate against them. Most of them live in mud-straw houses, tents, tin shacks and some are homeless. The majority are illiterate and are unemployed in the poverty-stricken country.

In most cases, Akhdam men, women and children survive by begging. Those with jobs work as road sweepers, porters, cobblers and shoe polishers.

Mainstream Yemeni society see them as slaves. According to legend, they are the descendants of Ethiopian invaders who briefly occupied Yemen some 1,500 years ago. With the abolition of slavery in Yemen in 1962, the Akhdam [singular khadem] are now all free but face widespread discrimination. It is estimated that there are some 500,000 Akhdam in Yemen [total population about 21.5 million]. Some 100,000 of Akhdam live on the outskirts of Sana'a.

IRIN spoke to three people from the Akhdam community who live in what is called "Akhdam City" in Sana'a, Yemen's capital.

Ahmed Yousof Mohammed Ali, 31. "I am married with three children. But I don't have a job. I live in poverty, and everyday I look for a job. If I find one, it is always to sweep the streets, or clean a house or office. I have to get any job so I can get food for my family. People have a bad image of us as we live isolated as if in a nest. We really need free education for our children as well as free medical services. If I don't have money, I can't go to hospital for medical treatment. The government should give us jobs as well.

Sharifa Ahmed ,60. "Every year, the General People's Congress [Yemen's ruling party in Yemen] gives us basic food. But this year the party hasn't offered us any support. Food is our main need. Our new house is better than the one we used to live in, but the situation now is worse than before. We have no water, no electricity and no food.

These three basic needs require money which we lack. At the end of each month, we have to pay water and electricity bills which we can't afford. Should we pay the [water and electricity] bills or should we pay for a visit to doctor, for textbooks, or above all, for a loaf of bread? We have had no water or electricity for three months as they have been cut off. Even charitable associations are no longer supporting us. How then can my husband and I maintain our 12 children?"

Fawaz Abdu Abdullah ,13. "The most difficult problem for me is when my classmates call me khadem [a servant]. I hate this the most and I hate them only for that very reason. I know they call me so deliberately to pick a quarrel with me, or provoke me or both.

Actually, we [the children of Akhdam community] don't have many friends.

I need a good education. Textbooks are not free. So far, the school administration has not given me any textbooks. Even our education is marginalised."

1) Dorothea Mission:

2) Fellowship Recording World Gospel:

Irrigation Department engineer detained for terror links
Special Correspondent
He is suspected to have financed Asif and two other terror suspects

Firearms originating from Pakistan were supplied to the arrested youths
Nasir had plans to target software firms in Bangalore

BANGALORE: The police detained for interrogation an Assistant Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department in Koppal district on Monday on suspicion of having contacts with three suspected terrorists arrested by Davangere and Hubli police recently.

Sources in the State Police told The Hindu that on the information given by Mohammed Asif, a final year MBBS student of Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hubli, who was arrested recently, a police team from Hubli detained the engineer in Munirabad in Koppal district.

The man, working in the Tungabhadra project, is suspected to have financed Asif and two other terror suspects Riyazuddin Nasir and Asadulla Abubaker, who were arrested by Davangere police. Asadulla is a resident of Hospet taluk in Bellary district, which is a few kilometres away from Munirabad.

Firearms

The investigators have learnt that a consignment of firearms originating from Pakistan and reaching Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh was supplied to the arrested youths. The weapons, which were said to be in Asif’s possession, were shifted to an as yet undisclosed destination after the medico learnt that Nasir and Asadulla had been arrested in Honnali in Davangere district. The police are now on the search for these weapons, which they suspect include AK-47 rifles.

The police suspect that Asif had handed over the arms consignment to Aznan of Bijapur, a former regional convenor of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). The police are now on the lookout for Aznan.

The sources said that soon after they were apprehended by the police, Asadulla is said to have called Asif on his mobile phone and informed him that he had been caught. The police are also on the lookout for two accomplices of Asif, one of whom has been identified as Jehangir.

The police are also probing the Afghanistan links of the arrested youths and their connections with terror modules in Kerala.

Terror plans

Riyazuddin Nasir had reportedly planned to trigger explosions at the Andhra Pradesh State police headquarters in Hyderabad.

During the interrogation by the Karnataka police, Nasir (22) has reportedly claimed that his handlers in Pakistan had assigned him the plan to execute. His claims have still to be confirmed and investigations are on by the Karnataka and Hyderabad police to do this. The police are also investigating Nasir’s other claims: that he had planned to attack American software companies in Bangalore. He mentioned Microsoft and IBM as among his targets, highly placed sources in the State police told The Hindu on Monday.

Nasir, a native of Hyderabad, told the investigators that he could not carry out the attack on the DGP’s office in Hyderabad as he did not receive the arms and ammunition from the terrorist outfit on time after sneaking into India through Bangladesh and Nepal last August, after undergoing arms training in Pakistan.

According to the sources, Nasir has claimed that his plan to attack the DGP’s office could not take off as his mentor and Harkat-ul-Jihadi (HuJi) commander Abdul Shahid, a fellow Hyderabadi, was shot dead in Pakistan. As he could not complete his assignment, his handlers had asked him to return to Pakistan, he said during the interrogation. However, he decided to stay back in India and shift base to Karnataka as the Hyderabad police were on the lookout for him.

After the twin explosions at Lumbini Park and Gokul Chats in Hyderabad, Indian authorities had urged Pakistan to hand over Shahid to India as he was suspected to have plotted a series of blasts in Andhra Pradesh. Shahid was later shot dead by unidentified men while he was riding a motorcycle in a Pakistani town, the sources said.

Meanwhile, participating in a national seminar on “Terrorism Disasters” here on Monday, P.K.H. Tharakan, Adviser to the Karnataka Governor and former chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), said a “major incident” had been averted with Nasir’s arrest, although he did not specify the incident.

The sources said the investigation of Nasir and his two arrested accomplices strongly suggests a network spread across several cities in Karnataka, including Bangalore.

Nasir and Asadullah Abubakar, a first year Ayurveda medicine student of a college in Hubli, were arrested last month while they were riding a motorcycle in a Davangere village. Subsequently, the police arrested their accomplice Mohammed Asif, a final year MBBS student of Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences in Hubli.

On information given by Asif, the police confirmed that Nasir had organised an arms training camp in a forest area near Hubli. It also emerged that Asif was connected with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and he was propagating the cause of “jihad,” the sources said.
