MADINAH, (Arab News): A 19th century mosque in Madinah's Al-Zahidiah district that was the subject of a dispute lasting several years has finally been demolished and is to be rebuilt 200 meters away from its original location, Al-Madinah newspaper reported.
â€The , ‬built by Sharif Muhammad bin Ali Al-Sanusi Al-Kabir around 1834â€, ‬has been demolished following deliberations lasting several yearsâ€.‬
The mosque was thought to be standing over or close to the grave of a famous Companion of the Prophet Muhammad†(‬peace be upon himâ€), ‬Sayyiduna Ra'fi bin Malik Al-Zurqi†(‬may Allah be pleased with himâ€).‬
In May 2006â€, ‬the mosqueâ€, ‬along with other old buildings leading to Quba Mosqueâ€, ‬was marked for demolition as part of a regeneration project to improve the Central Zoneâ€, ‬the area around the Holy Mosque. ‬Howeverâ€, ‬local residents protested and asked Madinah Gov. ‬Prince Abdul Aziz bin Majed†‬to investigate the matter and suspend the decisionâ€. ‬A committee was subsequently set up to verify the claimsâ€.‬Muhammad Al-Khatriâ€, ‬director of Islamic Affairs and Endowments in Madinahâ€, ‬said the committee did not find any evidence to support the view that Sayyiduna Ra'fi bin Malik Al-Zurqi†(‬may Allah be please with himâ€) ‬is buried in the mosque's vicinityâ€.‬Howeverâ€, ‬Anwar Al-Bakriâ€, ‬a former professor of history at Taibah University and a member of the city's municipal councilâ€, ‬said he has documents and books confirming that the Companion's remains were buried at the side of the mosqueâ€. "‬Neverthelessâ€, ‬excavations carried out by the committee failed to show signs of a bodyâ€," ‬he addedâ€.‬
Reference to the mosque is mentioned in an epistle written by Ali bin Musa in 1885†‬that describes Madinah's historic sitesâ€.‬
Not everyone is sure if the Companion is buried in Al-Katibiyyah Mosqueâ€. ‬Some say he was laid to rest in the northern section of the mosqueâ€, ‬while others claim he was buried elsewhere in the cityâ€, ‬citing historical texts to support their claimsâ€.‬
A third group believes the mosque should have remained as it is a house of God and that doubts remain on the exact location of the Companion's final resting placeâ€. ‬They also say the surrounding area is in need of a mosque and that the mosque was built in the 19th century in a distinct architectural style that makes it a historical landmarkâ€.‬
Sayyiduna Ra'fi bin Malik Al-Ansari Al-Khazraji Al-Zurqi fought alongside the Prophet (pbuh) in the Battle of Badr and was subsequently martyred in the Battle of Uhud in the third year of Hijrah†(‬625†‬ADâ€). ‬He belonged to the tribe of Al-Zuraiq whose homes historically extended from Bab Al-Anbariyyah to the Holy Mosqueâ€.‬
Sayyiduna Ra'fi was an early revert to Islam and was among those who first welcomed the Prophet (pbuh) when he migrated from Makkah to Madinah.‬
