N.B. priest gets 8 years for sex offences

NEW BRUNSWICK – A former New Brunswick priest was sentenced Friday to eight years in prison for 18 sex-related offences.
Levi Noel, 84, pleaded guilty last October to the charges, including gross indecency and indecent assault. The incidents date back to between 1958 and 1981 while he was a priest on the Acadian Peninsula in the northern part of the province.
The victims, boys between the ages of eight and 16 at the time, are expected to speak at a news conference later Friday.
Robert Talach, an Ontario lawyer who is helping the victims, told the CBC that future legal action against Noel is being considered.
The investigation into the allegations began after one victim broke his silence to police in May 2008. The RCMP investigation continues as more alleged victims have come forward.
Noel retired from the priesthood decades ago.
