Yogis descend on HK for first major Asia conference

By John Ruwitch
HONG KONG (Reuters Life!) - U.S.-based yogi David Swenson started his afternoon class on the final day of a four-day yoga conference in Hong Kong with a question.
"How many of you are tired?" he asked.
Hands shot up, nearly one for each of the 70-plus people sitting on mats in rows for the three-hour yoga session.
"You have to be careful sometimes when you go to these conferences," said the renowned yoga teacher. "It's a little bit like a buffet ... then you can have a yoga hangover."
His warning is one more and more people in this region may have to heed as the fitness trend that has exploded in popularity in the West rapidly gains ground on its home turf - Asia.
At the Evolution Asia Yoga Conference, the first of its kind in the region, 32 yoga experts from around the world taught scores of classes. More than 1,600 attendees sat in on an average of six classes each, according to the organisers.
In a conference and exhibition centre in the heart of Hong Kong, yoga products, from the basic rubber mats and spandex capris, to sandalwood soap and mother-baby DVDs were available.
Pairs of limber people did "acroyoga" demonstrations, combining acrobatics and yoga.
Toned women and men, most in flip-flops and yoga gear, toted their rolled up mats to and fro. Conference rooms normally lined with exhibition stalls or rows of chairs were emptied and the air conditioning turned off for the meet.
THE NEXT LEVEL
Yoga conferences are common in the West. In the United States the Indian health and spiritual trend now has more than 16 million followers.
But in some parts of Asia, it is just starting to take off.
Colin Grant, organiser of the conference and CEO of the Pure Group, which runs what he said is the biggest yoga studio in the world at 35,000 sq ft, estimates that 1 to 2 percent of Hong Kong's 7 million people are now into yoga, but the number is growing.
Five years ago there were about five studios; now there are about 60, he said. It has also been growing in popularity in Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.
"What we wanted to do was to take it to the next level, which was to show to all the students in Hong Kong and the region that there's way more to yoga," said Grant.
"This is the first time it's happened in Asia. Two-thirds of the people that ended up coming have never been to a yoga conference before."
Will Senn Lau, a sinewy 40-year-old television commercial producer who plans to become a yoga instructor, got into yoga to lose weight five years ago. "Now, the whole thing is turning inward," he said.
Lau said the conference was a good way to find new students and meet top teachers, like Swenson.
"In the yoga world, they are like rock stars," he said.
South Korean studio owner Christina Choe, 32, brought eight of her teachers to Hong Kong for the conference.
"When you are teaching all the time and you are in your own little world, it's good to see other teachers and become reinvigorated," she said.
"You bring that energy back to your students."

Jeremy Irons lends support to prison yoga program

Actor Jeremy Irons says his work as an actor enabled him to connect with the prisoners he wants to help as part of a program that encourages inmates to meditate and practice yoga.
"I live on the edge," Irons told CTV's Canada AM. "I play characters who live on the edge and I like that. I'm very aware that it's a very thin line between being inside jail and being outside jail."
The actor is involved in Freeing the Human Spirit, a program that helps prisoners deal with their anger and stay out of jail through the practice of yoga and meditation.
Irons -- who has won an Oscar, an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Tony -- became involved with the program through 83-year-old Moncton, N.B.-born Catholic nun and Zen master Elaine MacInnes.
MacInnes has been teaching meditation to prisoners since 1980. She received the Order of Canada in 1999 for her work in the area.
According to The Globe and Mail, Irons met MacInnes while she was living in England in the mid-nineties while he was taking one of her Zen classes.
"She's an extraordinary woman," Irons told The Globe. "Sadly, she's now 80-something, although you wouldn't know it.
"I wish she was 30-something because she has so much to give to life. I've only met four or five amazing people in my life, and she is one."
Irons has been involved as a hands-on participant with the Freeing the Human Spirit program for the past 12 years. The Freeing the Human Spirit organization and some prisons are located near his Oxford home.
"The idea is not only to help prisoners while they're in prison, but to prepare them for when they get out," Irons told Canada AM. "Because when they get out, they haven't got a house, they haven't got a job, their wife's probably left them.
"It's tough and unless you've got some sort of calm and centre for yourself, it's really difficult not to reoffend and go back in. So, it seemed to me to be a fantastic organization."
The program has been running in Canada for around four years, according to Irons. It is accepted in 27 prisons in the country and is currently being practiced in 14 correctional facilities. The program can make a genuine difference in the lives of the incarcerated, Irons said.
"When you're banged up in prison, as Paris (Hilton) will find out, I suppose, you're stuck in a cell on your own, a very negative experience," Irons told Canada AM. "But if you can turn that cell into an ashram, if you can learn to meditate and do yoga, exercise your mind and exercise your body -- then it becomes a positive experience."

Another Christian church attacked in Bandung
Yuli Tri Suwarni, The Jakarta Post, Bandung
After yet another attack against a Christian church this week in Bandung, West Java -- UK human rights movement Christian Solidarity Worldwide's (CSW) research showing West Java is the launching pad for Indonesia's anti-Christian movement has once again been confirmed.
In light of the growing number of attacks on Christian churches in West Java, CSW recently warned Indonesia that international concern was on the rise.
In the most recent attack, dozens of unidentified people Sunday broke into Sidang Jemaat Allah church at Gading Tutuka complex in Soreang, Bandung forcing church-goers, including 15 children, to stop their religious activities, which they have conducted weekly since 2000.
The attackers allegedly forced their way into the church at 9.30am Sunday, hit the Reverend's wife over the head with a bible and forced the children's Sunday School activity to stop.
Church-goer Lidia said the attackers claimed they were from the Anti-apostate Movement Alliance (AGAP).
Sunday's incident shows the suppression of religious freedom in this predominantly Muslim nation continues in West Java, where dozens of churches and places of worship have been forcibly closed by Muslim extremists over the past few months.
The number of churches forcibly closed in West Java alone since September 2004 is reported to be more than 30.
Dozens of other churches have been also forced to close in other provinces.
Under the revised joint decree issued by Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni, the establishment of a house of worship must gain the approval of at least 60 local residents and have a minimum of 90 followers.
Shouting Allahu Akbar (God is Great), the attackers forced their way into the church and destroyed at least four glass pictures of Jesus Christ.
"They knocked on the church door, damaged it and forced themselves into to our school room," Lidia said.
"They said (Sunday School) was an act of apostate."
After picking up a bible in the church, one of the attackers hit Reverend Robby Elisa's wife, Moni over the head, Lidia said.
Ani, another church-goer, said the Sunday attack was the second to have taken place at the church where the attackers demanded the church be closed.
Last time the attackers said the church was not equipped with the necessary licenses, Ani said.
Church-goers however received permission from local neighborhood communities more than seven years ago to hold their religious activities, she said.
At the time of the first attack, a new head of the local neighborhood community questioned the existence of the church and later demanded the church be closed.
But Ani said, "We are here to serve our church followers because it's impossible for us to go into town to attend church activities -- transportation costs are very high".
Rev. Robby Elisa was away at the time of the attack and AGAP representatives have denied any involvement.
Moni was until Sunday evening questioned about her attack by the Katapang police station.
Muhammad Mukmin, head of AGAP, denied his group was behind the attack.
"In the case of any attack, we usually inform in advance," Mukmim said.
I was at home the whole day because I had attended the funeral of my father and we were still discussing the distribution of the heritage (of the family)."
Hedi Muhammad from the Anti-Apostate Division of the Islamic Ulema Forum (FUUI), an organization in support of AGAP, also denied any involvement in the attack.
"Usually when there is a kind of mass movement, we have coordination," Hedi said.
"We don't know at all from which groups they (the attackers) come from."

Minister backs brief marriages to curb illicit sex
Agencies
Tehran: Iran's interior minister faced criticism from women activists on Saturday after advocating the practice of temporary marriage as a way to meet the needs of
young people in the Islamic state, which bans extramarital sex.
"Is it possible that Islam is indifferent to a 15-year-old
youth into whom God has put lust?" newspapers quoted Interior Minister Mostafa Pourmohammadi, who is also a cleric, as telling a religious seminar this week.
Temporary marriage, or sigha, is an agreement between a manand a women to get married for a specified time, even for just afew days. It has long been practised by Shiite Muslims, who are dominant in Iran, even though it is unclear how common it is.
Sunni Muslims say it is illegal and akin to prostitution,
but some Shiites scholars say it reflects the reality of human
nature and provides for the rights and responsibilities of both
the man and the woman.
"Although temporary marriage has always existed in our law,
it is considered improper by Iranian culture," Shadi Sadr, an
Iranian activist for women rights, told the ISNA news agency.
Pourmohammadi spoke on Thursday in Qom, Iran's religious
centre, and his comments were carried mainly by reformist
dailies on Saturday. They also published reaction, mostly from opponents of the practice but also from some clerical backers.
"Islam is a comprehensive and complete religion and has a
solution for every behaviour and need and temporary marriage is one of its solutions for the needs of the youth," Pourmohammadi said according to the Sharq daily.
"For fulfilling the sexual desires of the youth who do not
have the possibility to get married a decision should be taken."
A temporary marriage is easy to arrange. A couple will agree
on how long they will get married - it's usually anywhere from
a day to months - and on financial matters.
Couples often go to a Shiite cleric for approval of the
contract. The practice is believed to have pre-dated Islam among the tribes of the Arabian peninsula.
"A great number of women who agree to have temporary
marriage do it because of their problems and financial need,"
another women activist, Fatemeh Sadeghi, told ISNA.
The Ham Mihan daily quoted a receptionist at a hotel in
Tehran as saying it accepted couples with documents showing they were temporarily married and that it had about 100 such guests per week. "Our clients are young men with older women," he said.
Both Sunni and Shiite scholars agree that the Prophet
Mohammad (PBUH) did at certain times allow it. But Sunni scholars say the Prophet later banned it. Most Shi'ites say he didn't.
"In this kind of marriage there is no force, therefore we
can not say it is violating women's rights," one Iranian cleric,
Hojjatoleslam Ahmad Ghabel, told Sharq.
But a female former parliamentary deputy, Fatemeh Rakei,
suggested that entering into a temporary marriage made it
difficult for young women to later find permanent husbands and also expressed concern about the future of children from such marriages.
"We should expect violations and repercussions if we do not practically respond to young people's sexual needs," the centrist Kargozaran daily quoted Interior Minister Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi as saying.
Seminary study
Pourmohammadi said Iran should seek to promote the practice with "boldness" and urged seminary scholars to study the matter and come up with ways to "execute God's command in society".
"We should not be afraid of promoting temporary marriages in a nation that is being governed by the rule of God."
Critics condemn 'sigha' as tantamount to prostitution, but clerics argue it is merely a more spiritual way of addressing basic human urges.
Sixty per cent of Iran's population is under 30 years of age and the average age of marriage has risen to 30 for men and 26 for women, according to unofficial estimates.

Four executed in Pakistani tribal region for alleged illicit relations
The Associated PressPublished: June 4, 2007
PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Tribesmen shot four people to death in a public execution in northwestern Pakistan Monday, after a council of elders found them guilty of adultery, an official said.
Residents seized the three men and a woman at a house in Alam Gudar, a villager in the Khyber tribal region near the Afghan border on Monday morning, said Purdil Khan, a local government official.
The four confessed under questioning by a hastily convened jirga, or council, of tribal elders, who sentenced them to death, Khan said.
Tribesmen shot them in the street in front of a large crowd of residents, Khan said.
Haji Jan Gul, a local elder, confirmed that the four were executed "according to tribal tradition."

Executions for adultery are regularly reported from remote, conservative areas of Pakistan, drawing criticism from domestic and international rights groups.
Some occur in the semiautonomous tribal belt, where the federal government has limited jurisdiction and a harsh tribal justice prevails.
However, there have also been cases further east, despite President Gen. Pervez Musharraf's calls for the practice to stop.

A 1794 BC stone tablet established that the Sumerian-Assyrian culture had its roots in Andhra Pradesh
Samyuktha Koonaiah
CHENNAI: In a path-breaking revelation, a young research scholar of Potti Sriramulu Telugu University has come out with recorded evidence linking Telugus and Israelis on the basis of Telugu words found in Hebrew literature.
The disclosure was made by Samyuktha Koonaiah in her presentation at a seminar on `Telugu History and Culture' on the concluding day of the three-day All India Telugu Conference here on Sunday. She quoted epigraphic evidence traced from Bahrain in support of her argument.
Ms. Samyuktha, who is doing her research on `Andhra Pradesh - The missing link - Tilmun language and Telugu', said a 1794 BC stone tablet established that the Sumerian-Assyrian culture had its roots in Andhra Pradesh.
Interesting revelations
In fact, an article titled `The Seafaring Merchants of Ur' published in the American Oriental Society in1954 by A. L. Oppenheim contains several Telugu words to prove that Abraham migrated from the `land of darkness', the `Andhaka Desa' as the Andhra region was known in the past, she said.
Research findings suggest that `Barbar' or `Barbaras', a native tribe living in the south of the Vindhyas was a common name in Assyrian culture. An earliest instance of calling children `Bullutu' was similar to that of the Telugu usage Bulli, Bullodu etc, she said. Another `provincial spelling' in Telmun literature and references to Sumero-Akkadian vocabularies contain this sentence `ni imta ha-is' similar to that of `nee intiki vachchi' (come to my home).
Letter on tablet
A stone tablet also contained a letter from a seafarer to a local trader demanding to know why he did not sell a particular commodity at a price agreed upon and why it was not weighed properly too.
Old Babylonian legal documents which were unearthed by archaeologists contain evidence of this letter belonging to one member of the Guild of Dilmun, Ea-Nasir. One of its lines when pronounced in Telugu becomes "ayya adhi annakimmani, tusi (tuchi) immani, maaki antundhi" (something to the effect `I have asked you to give it to my brother after weighing'. It was a deal about copper ingots.
Telling proof
Quoting several such examples Ms. Samyuktha said there was sufficient proof to link those Sumerian cultures with the Telugus. Hebrew, Sumerian and Assyrian records abound in such descriptions and suggest that the present Israelis belonged to Andhra Pradesh.
Ms. Samyuktha argues that Kamakur village in Balayapalli mandal of Nellore district still has 21 Jewish families. Only they are not even aware that they are Jews. She is one among them and her first name Kooniah could be found in Hebrew as Koni, she says.

Malegaon moulvis in deal with Sena
4 Jun, 2007 l 0156 hrs ISTlMateen Hafeez/TIMES NEWS NETWORK
MUMBAI: In a two-hour closed-door meeting at Shivneri Bhavan in Malegaon on Saturday night, the office bearers of the Indian Muslim Congress Party (IMCP) and the Shiv Sena agreed to a sharing arrangement for the mayor and deputy mayor posts in the Malegaon Municipal Corporation. While the mayor would be from IMCP, the saffron party would get the post of deputy mayor.
This means that the cleric-led IMCP, which as the Third Front substantially dented the Congress and JD(S) votebanks in the May 27 civic elections, is a step closer to staking its claim to rule the powerloom town's civic corporation along with the Sena.
While a 37-seat majority is needed to rule the 72-seat civic House, the IMCP has 26 seats and the Sena seven. An independent candidate has offered them support. Meanwhile, Congress and JD (S), which are joining hands, have 15 and 12 seats respectively. An independent has also offered the JD (S) support.
The Malegaon House will vote for the mayor on June 13. A delegation of the Third Front is likely to come to Mumbai to meet Sena supremo Bal Thackeray and executive president Uddhav Thackeray to finalise the deal. A decision on meeting the Thackerays is yet to be taken. No Sena office-bearer in Malegaon was available for comment.
The Malegaon meeting was attended by the Shiv Sena's Malegaon (Camp) MLA, Dada Bhuse, taluka pramukh Sanjay Dusane and IMCP office-bearers Maulana Ayyub Qasmi, Ateeque Mahendra and others. Several Sena leaders from Thane and Nashik were also present at the meeting and offered support to the IMCP.
It is learnt that deputy chief minister R R Patil on Saturday spoke to IMCP president Mufti Mohammed Ismail via telephone and assured him of the NCP's support if the Front did not join hands with the Sena. Sources said that Patil even said that he would speak to chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh to get Congress support for the Front. However, the Front declined Patil's offer, saying the Congress has ruined the city and hampered its development.
In the twin powerloom township of Bhiwandi, which held its civic polls last week, the prospects of the secular parties are a shade brighter. Although the front-line Bhiwandi Vikas Aghadi has threatened to join Sena-BJP if the Samajwadi Party doesn't get off its high horse, a secular alliance may eventually emerge to rule the Bhiwandi-Nizampura Municipal Corporation, said political observers.
Aghadi president Javed Dalvi said that he was in talks with the Congress and Samajwadi Party to settle the issue of mayorship. However, refusing to rule out a Sena tilt, Dalvi said, "Rajniti mein kal ka dushman aaj ka dost ban jata hai (In politics, yesterday's foes are today's friends)."

Gaza Kindergarten Kids Get 'A" for Jihad
by Hana Levi Julian
(IsraelNN.com) Palestinian Authority kindergarten children demonstrated in a graduation ceremony how well they had learned their lessons this year.
A video clip of the ceremony, televised on Hamas’ Al-Aksa TV, was distributed Friday by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).
The little boys in the video march in formation and then drop to the floor, crawl on their bellies and vow to become terrorists when they grow up.
In the last minute of the clip, the boys in the televised ceremony shout “Allah Hu Akbar!” (Allah is great!).
“Who is your role model?” they are asked. “The Prophet,” they chant.
“What is your path?” demands the leader. “Jihad!” they cry, in their little camouflage uniforms and black masks, brandishing toy guns and waving green Hamas flags.
“What is your most lofty aspiration?”
“Death for the sake of Allah!”
The kindergarten is run by the same group that spawned the Hamas terrorist organization – the Islamic Association in Gaza.
This is not the first time that the Hamas terrorist entity has used little children as bait, indoctrinating them to hate Israel, Israelis and Jews and train them from infancy to become suicide bombers.
A significant number of suicide bombings have been carried out by PA adolescents and young adults.
Hamas recently used a look-alike of the Disney character, Mickey Mouse, in a television program promoting Islamic conquest of the world.
Known as a benevolent social services organization among the PA’s poor, Hamas continues to call for the destruction of the State of Israel.
Teaching the children to carry out terrorist attacks against Israel is a direct violation of the the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement in 2005. The Palestinian Authority (PA), headed by Fatah leader and PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, agreed to halt incitement against Israel.
Hamas has said it is not bound by the pact, but the European Union (EU) and United States have declared it will not recognize the new Hamas-Fatah unity agreement if both factions do not accept previous agreements.

Burglaries on the Rise, Riyadh Residents Complain
M. Ghazanfar Ali Khan, Arab News
RIYADH, 13 May 2007 — Several thefts and burglaries have been reported this month in the Riyadh region, including three this week alone when burglars stole large amounts of cash and jewelry from the house of a local resident.
Burglars robbed the home of Saqavath Ali, a Saudi Investment Bank (SAIB) employee. Speaking to Arab News, Ali said that he had filed a complaint with local police but recovery of his belongings — including gold jewelry, a computer, a gas cylinder and other household items — looks remote.
“On returning home at 10.45 p.m., I found the main door broken and all household items strewn across the bedrooms and drawing room. ... I have lodged a complaint at the Malaz Police Station, but no breakthrough has been achieved so far,” he said, adding that he was dissatisfied at the way reports of theft and robberies are handled by local police.
The daylight robbery of the home of another expatriate couple in the fashionable Rawda district of the city has triggered a new debate on the need to check the growing incidence of burglaries in the capital. Gold jewelry worth SR30,000 was stolen from the house of Samiullah and Renu Ali.
The thieves are still at large. The caretaker of the building was briefly detained by police for questioning.
In another case, an expatriate woman said her housemaid was alone when her home was burgled. The maid claims that the burglars tied her to a pillar, stole valuables and fled in a getaway car parked outside. The case remains unsolved.
“They took away all the valuables including jewelry, home appliances and the music system,” said the woman, who did not want to be identified.
Cases like these have become common in Riyadh nowadays. Amanullah, an engineer, said that he was roughed up only last week by a group of Arab boys, who snatched some valuables from him including a cell phone. Amanullah was returning home from prayers at a nearby mosque. The districts of Malaz, Haiul Wazarat, Batha, Al-Suwedi and other old areas of the capital have become notorious for thefts and muggings.
An average of 10 cell phones are either snatched forcibly or stolen from these areas everyday. In all of these cases, local police have largely failed to recover stolen valuables or arrest the culprits. Although the Ministry of Interior has implemented a security patrolling system to stem instances of crime, a well-organized gang of thieves seems to be on the prowl.
According to an official report published recently, the Riyadh region tops the list of recorded theft cases in the Kingdom. Of the 27,140 thefts and burglaries reported Kingdomwide last year, more than 12,500 cases were in the Riyadh region. Prince Ahmad, deputy minister of interior, said efforts are being made by the ministry to stop thefts.
A number of surveillance cameras have been installed in compounds and public places to detect crimes. Municipal officials have also been instructed to illuminate streets and residential quarters to discourage thieves from operating under the cover of darkness.
The prince attributed the rise in crime rate to the population growth, an increasing number of illegal residents and drug addiction among youngsters. Crime also seems to increase during the summer holidays.

Asia’s Islamic extremists add beheadings to their arsenal
By Associated Press
Friday, June 1, 2007 - Updated: 11:40 AM EST
NA PRADU, Thailand - It took two days for the young Muslim assassin to calm his nerves before the slaying.
Then, Mohama Waekaji says, he walked one cool morning to a rice mill, carrying a knife and following orders from a guerrilla commander to behead the 72-year-old Buddhist owner.
He asked the elderly man, Juan Kaewtongprakam, for some rice husks. As he turned to collect them, Waekaji says, he slashed the blade through the man’s neck.
"I didn’t dare to disobey," the 23-year-old Waekaji said in an interview with The Associated Press _ the first time a Thai militant accused of a beheading has spoken to the Western media. "I knew they would come after me if I did not do what I was told."
The killing in February was one in a spate of beheadings that has shocked Thailand, a nation with no past history of the practice, and fueled fears that the brutal terrorist tactics of the Middle East are spreading in Asia.
Twenty-five beheadings _ including 10 already this year _ have been reported in southern Thailand since an Islamic-inspired insurgency erupted in 2004, claiming more than 2,200 lives. Militants in the heavily Muslim region seek independence from mostly Buddhist Thailand.
"Beheadings are certainly on the rise outside of the Middle East proper," said Timothy Furnish, professor of Middle Eastern history at Georgia Perimeter College. "These groups do take their cues from ... hardcore Islamic thought coming out of the Arab world. Beheading infidels not only shocks, but also demonstrates Islamic bona fides to other groups."
Thai authorities say jihad videos from the Middle East, captured from rebel training camps, may be inspiring young men like Waekaji. One clip said to have come from Iraq shows a woman lying on her side on a patch of grass as a man slowly cuts her throat with a long knife. Blood spurts from the wound, the screaming finally stops and her head is completely severed.
"The inspiration is clearly coming across the Internet or through DVDs clips," said Zachary Abuza, an expert on terrorism in Southeast Asia at Simmons College in Boston.
"Islamist militants in Southeast Asia are very frustrated that the region is considered the Islamic periphery," Abuza added. "... Militants of the region are actively trying to pull the region into the Islamic core. They want people to understand that their jihad is a part of the global jihad."
Beheadings have been linked to other militants across Asia, including groups in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indian-held Kashmir and Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation. In the mostly Roman Catholic Philippines, at least 37 people have been decapitated in the last decade by the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf.
Beheadings are not solely a tool of guerrillas. Its imposed as punishment under some strict interpretations of Islamic law such as in Saudi Arabia and under the former Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
Waekaji’s account of his journey _ from quiet, average student to a confessed killer _ offers insights into how young Muslims fall under the influence of militant Islamic thinking.
He was attending a private Islamic school in Pattani province when a school buddy persuaded him to join a religious event at a mosque. There "ustad," or teachers, told him about an organization to liberate southern Thailand, asking him to take an oath to become a servant of Allah, obey the teachers and take the secrets of the organization to his grave.
Although confused and with little knowledge of politics, he took the oath and began secret training at age 19.
His teachers stressed the sufferings of Muslims in Palestine and Afghanistan and also in Thailand, where many Muslims feel they are second-class citizens in a Buddhist-dominated land.
The teachers detailed the Tak Bai tragedy of 2004 when Thai security forces confronted Muslim protesters, resulting in the deaths of 85. The victims died of suffocation when authorities arrested 1,300 people and stacked them on top of each other in trucks.
"I was shaken when I heard the story. I was revengeful and I did hate them, those who did this to us Muslims," Waekaji said at the prison in Na Pradu, about 680 miles south of Bangkok.
His story could not be independently confirmed, but Waekaji has made a formal written confession and the police have filed a case against him in criminal court.
During rigorous training, he learned how to do knuckle push-ups, wield knives, swords and guns and how to take a life by squeezing an opponent’s Adam’s apple with his hands or breaking a victim’s neck.
After two years, he was sent out to burn tires and spread nails on roads to puncture tires and distract police before attacks staged by his comrades.
"They recruit responsible, tight-lipped and trouble-free teenagers ... people who can carry out orders and who don’t attract attention to themselves," said Thai army Col. Shinawat Mandej. "They train their minds before training their bodies. They get them at the most vulnerable age when they need something to believe in and turn them into cold-blooded killers."
When the order came to slay the mill owner _ a person he had seen but didn’t know _ Waekaji said he was frightened, both by the orders and what his leaders would do to him if he failed.
"It was too late to want out," he said, his eyes closed and his head downcast. "It was either me or him."
Police found the man’s headless body at the rice mill and his head in a nearby field that separates Muslim and Buddhist villages. Waekaji was arrested and charged with the killing about two months later.
Leaflets left in mailboxes and motorcycle baskets in Pattani the day of the beheading warned: "We will give Thai Buddhists three days to leave our land. Otherwise, we will kill you and burn your houses. ... Thai Buddhists will never live peacefully. You will be killed cruelly."

Catholic priest shot dead in IraqFrom correspondents in Mosul

A CHALDAEAN Catholic priest and three of his assistants were shot dead overnight outside a church in northern Iraq, the local police commander said.
Brigadier-General Mohammed al-Wagaa, police chief in the divided northern city of Mosul, said the cleric and his colleagues had been shot dead outside the Holy Spirit church in the Nur district.
"They finished mass ... and the four of them got into the priest's car to drive away. After they had gone about 100m a car cut them off. Four armed men got out and shot them dead," he said.
The Catholic news agency Asianews identified the victims as 31-year-old Father Ragheed Ganni and his three assistants.
Last month, the leaders of Iraq's Christian minority called on the country's beleaguered government to protect their community from attacks by al-Qaeda-inspired Muslim extremists.
In a joint statement, Patriarch Mar Dinka IV of the Assyrian Church of the East and the Chaldaean Catholic Patriarch Emmanuel Delly of Babylon said Baghdad's remaining Christians were facing persecution.
They blamed the so-called Islamic State of Iraq, an alliance of Islamist insurgent groups that serves as an al-Qaeda front, for much of the violence.
"Christians in a number of Iraqi regions, especially those under the control of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq, have faced blackmail, kidnapping and displacement," the May 10 statement said.
Before the US-led invasion of March 2003, there were estimated to be about 800,000 Christians in Iraq, about three per cent of the otherwise largely Muslim population, living mainly in urban centres such as Baghdad.
Although there were some attacks on churches in the immediate aftermath of the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, Iraq's Christians were not especially targeted while rival Sunni and Shiite Muslim factions went to war.
As a relatively wealthy community, however, many Christians fell prey to kidnap and ransom gangs and many - probably more than half - of them have fled the country or moved to the relative safety of Iraqi Kurdistan.
Now there are reports that Salafist groups such as al-Qaeda, fundamentalists who believe Islam can be renewed by returning to the values of the era of the Prophet Mohammed, are targeting Christians on purely sectarian grounds.
The US Commission on International Religious Freedom, an independent bipartisan government agency, last month voiced concern at the deteriorating situation for freedom of religion and belief in Iraq.
Christian communities now face the threat of eradication in their historic homelands in Iraq under pervasive and severe violence and discrimination at the hands of both government and non-government actors, it warned.

Female TV broadcasters threatened
Associated Press
Sunday, June 3, 2007 (Gaza City)
A Muslim extremist group threatened to behead female TV broadcasters if they don't don strict Islamic dress, leaving the women terrified and marking a further downward spiral in Gaza's anarchy.
The threat to ''cut throats from vein to vein'' was delivered by the Swords of Truth, a fanatical group that has previously claimed responsibility for bombing Internet cafes and music shops.
The new threat was the first time the organization targeted a specific group of people, and adds to
a growing climate of extremism, fear and suspicion in Gaza.
In many parts of the Muslim world, religious conservative policies keep women out of TV nchoring positions or only let them take the jobs if they wear headscarves. But in some countries scarves are uncommon, like Lebanon and Jordan, and Egypt even keeps newscasters who wear them off its TV stations.
The influence of Islamic groups in the Gaza Strip has grown over the past three decades, especially as poverty rose since fighting with Israel began in 2000.
Now, it is more common to see women with their faces covered with veils than to see women without their hair covered.
இவர்கள் வன்முறை வழியை விட்டு அமைதி வழியை பின்பற்ற நாமும் முயற்சி எடுக்க வேண்டும்

Five people, including a senior political official and a tribal journalist, were killed in a bomb blast on Saturday in Tehsil Salarzai of Bajaur Agency, bordering Afghanistan.
The political authorities of Bajaur Agency confirmed that the blast took place at Tehsil Salarzai, where unknown militants planted a remote control bomb on the roadside.
An official said Tehsildar Wisal Khan, tribal chief Malik Muhammad Hayat, his son Perviez, Khassadar Hassan and a local journalist who is also the vice president of the tribal union of journalists Noor-ul-Hakeem were killed in the blast.
Tehsildar and his companions went to the Mullasaid area of Bajaur Agency to attend a jirga. After attending the jirga, the officials, in compliance with a jirga decision, then took part in demolishing the house of an alleged criminal.
The jirga was convened to decide the fate of the criminal who was allegedly involved in the killing of tribal doctor Abdul Ghani. The slain doctor was working with the polio control program of the Bajaur Agency when he was killed by a remote control bomb early this year.
Official sources said it was a targeted killing by the Taliban, who are gaining strength in the northern agency along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. They said further that Tehsildar had also served in Waziristan and had survived a similar attack last year in the restive northern district.
Local journalists of Bajaur Agency said the Taliban are also making headway in other northern tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.
The Taliban had threatened staff of the polio control program earlier and when Ghani declined to follow the advice, he was killed.

Saudi Government to Demolish Prophet Muhammed’s home
Farzan Mahmood
August 20, 2005
Saudi Royals destroying home of Muhammed says an op-ed piece in the the Toronto Star by
Tarek Fatah. Please save Prophet Muhammad's home echoes an editorial in the Daily Times by Najam Sethi. Both report that the Prophet Muhammed's house in Mecca will be demolished to make way for the Jabal Omar Scheme, a project consisting of a parking lot, two 50-story hotel towers and seven 35-storey apartment blocks. This news was first reported on August 6, in 2005 The destruction of Mecca: Saudi hardliners are wiping out their own heritage By Daniel Howden in The Independent.
Despite this terrible outrage, there has been very little coverage in the press in the Muslim world about this decision. I am sure that if the news is leaked to the public, there would be strong protest from multiple quarters in the Muslim world to stop this thoughtless act. Dr Sami Angawi, a Saudi architect, is the only voice so far that has opposed this idea in public, in the original article in The Independent.
Saudi Arabia is home to Wahhabism, an ultra-orthodox sect with a long history of destruction of religious and cultural sites. In the 1920's, when the Wahhabis conquered Mecca, they destroyed the "Jannat al-Baqi" graveyard which contains the graves of the Prophet Muhammed's family and companions. They also looted the Grand Mosque in Medina and destroyed Prophet Muhammed's house where he received the Revelations. Over a year ago, in June (2004) Stephen Schwartz reported in Daily Standard that "the city planning authorities in Medina, known for their Wahhabi extremism, have ordered the leveling of five of seven mosques built in the city by Muhammad`s daughter and four of his companions. These structures are the Mosque of Sayyida Fatima bint Rasulillah, Salman al-Farsi Mosque, Abu Bakr Mosque, Umar ibn al-Khattab Mosque, and Mosque of Ali ibn Abi Talib." It has been reported that a majority of 1,000 year or older buildings in Mecca have been demolished for commercial development.
These were all immeasurable and irreplaceable religious and cultural losses to all Muslims worldwide. It is sad that Saudi Arabia has destroyed and continues to destroy the historical, religious and cultural assets of the entire Muslim community for their short term commercial gains.
I am asking the Chowk community to help verify the details of the news of the demolition of the Prophet's house. If verified, this is an inexcusable outrage and I would request you to spread the word to ask the Saudi government to stop this heinous act.

Democracy stuns Polish coma man

Story Highlights• Polish railway worker wakes after 19 year coma
• Surprised to find communism is over in East European country
• Remembers country of rationing and lines at gas stations
WARSAW, Poland (Reuters) -- A 65-year-old railwayman who fell into a coma following an accident in communist Poland regained consciousness 19 years later to find democracy and a market economy, Polish media reported on Saturday.
Wheelchair-bound Jan Grzebski, whom doctors had given only two or three years to live following his 1988 accident, credited his caring wife Gertruda with his revival.
"It was Gertruda that saved me, and I'll never forget it," Grzebski told news channel TVN24.
"For 19 years Mrs Grzebska did the job of an experienced intensive care team, changing her comatose husband's position every hour to prevent bed-sore infections," Super Express reported Dr Boguslaw Poniatowski as saying.
"When I went into a coma there was only tea and vinegar in the shops, meat was rationed and huge petrol lines were everywhere," Grzebski told TVN24, describing his recollections of the communist system's economic collapse.
"Now I see people on the streets with cell phones and there are so many goods in the shops it makes my head spin."
Grzebski awoke to find his four children had all married and produced 11 grandchildren during his years in hospital.
He said he vaguely recalled the family gatherings he was taken to while in a coma and his wife and children trying to communicate with him.

Sources: Suspects were planning to bring explosives at New York facility
Updated: 10 minutes ago
NEW YORK - Federal investigators have arrested four suspects in an alleged terror plot on John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, WNBC-TV reported Saturday.

Malaysian Muslim woman pleads for government help to convert to Hinduism
2007-06-01 12:11:48 -
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - A Malaysian woman pleaded for the government to help her renounce Islam and become a Hindu, saying Friday she was trapped into becoming a Muslim by a twist of fate at birth.
The plea by the 26-year-old ethnic Indian, who asked to be identified only as Jamaliah, came two days after
the country's top civil court ruled against Lina Joy, who had wanted the court to sanction her conversion from Islam to Christianity.
Jamaliah told reporters she was crushed by the Federal Court ruling that only Malaysia's Islamic Shariah court can legally sanction a Muslim's conversion _ highly unlikely given that apostasy among Muslims is a crime in Malaysia.
«I don't want to be a Muslim. All this while I've been living life as a Hindu and I only want to marry a Hindu man,» Jamaliah said. «I want to change my religion but the court's ruling in Lina Joy's case has shattered my hopes for a future.»
She said she tried to commit suicide last week after her Hindu boyfriend of six years tried to break off their relationship because there was little chance of them marrying. He must convert to Islam to legally wed Jamaliah as marriage between Muslims and non-Muslims is not allowed.
Jamaliah said her boyfriend finally broke up with her on Thursday after hearing the verdict in Joy's case, which was seen as the ultimate test of how much freedom Muslims of Malaysia have to leave their faith.
She said she feared reprisals from Islamic authorities for publicly declaring her desire to leave Islam, which could include detention in a prison-like rehabilitation center.
Jamaliah's life is bound by a series of coincidences. Her father converted from Hinduism to Islam so that he could take a second wife, a Muslim. Jamaliah was born to his first wife, a Hindu, in 1981 after her father's conversion.
She was abandoned by her mother shortly after birth and was brought up by her father and Muslim stepmother. For that reason, she was registered as a Muslim, although she began practicing Hinduism when she was old enough to pray.
Her stepmother supports her desire to become a Hindu, said Jamaliah, who also goes by the Hindu name Priya.
Although the Malaysian Constitution allows freedom of faith, it says Islam is the official religion.
It also follows a dual justice system _ the Shariah courts administer the family and personal affairs of Muslims, who are 60 percent of the 26 million people, while civil courts handle the affairs of the Hindu, Christian, Buddhist and Sikh minorities.
In cases of religious disputes, the civil judiciary has mostly bowed to the Shariah courts even though the Constitution does not say which has the higher authority.

‘Hyderabad blast a conspiracy to break Muslim unity’

Lucknow : Muslim Forum for National Integration founder president and Muslim community leader Iqbal Qureshi apprehends the hand of Israeli lobby in the May 18 Makkah Masjid blast in Hyderabad which to him aimed at creating hatred for Saudi Arabia among the Indian Muslims.
In a telephonic conversation with Tasneem Qidwai of Urdu daily Hindustan Express published Friday, Qureshi demanded the Andhra Pradesh government include Capt (Retd.) Bharat Verma's statement made during a discussion on Janmat news channel soon after the blast, in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) enquiry into the blast.
During the Janmat discussion, Defence publications specialist Lancer's chief executive Bharat Verma, who retired as a captain in the Indian army, had made a sensitive revelation, within four hours of the blast, that the Makkah Masjid blast could well have been the planned attack made by the forces that are eager to establish Khilafat via the medium of Wahhabism not only in India but in the entire world.
Qureshi emphasised that the anti-Islam Zionist mentality is quite apparent in the said statement of Bharat Verma. "By presenting this far-fetched theory Bharat Verma made the Makkah Masjid blast an internal affair of the Muslims. It aimed at giving way to strife and bloodshed among Muslims by fanning sectarian differences among the community members and thus at breaking the unity of Muslims," he said without mincing any word and added that the theory of establishing Khilafat via the medium of Wahhabism was hatched by the Zionists.
Qureshi urged the Muslim leaders to exert pressure on the Government of India as well as the Government of Andhra Pradesh to include the said statement of Bharat Verma in the CBI enquiry into the Makkah Masjid blast and to grill Verma to know on what basis he made such a sensational statement and what is the source of his theory.

Suicide bombing in Iraq seen as sign of spreading power struggle
Residents, militants fighting al-Qaida throughout country
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
BAGHDAD
An al-Qaida-linked suicide bomber attacked a safehouse occupied by an insurgent group that has turned against the terror network. Yesterday’s attack northeast of Baghdad killed two other militants, police said, the latest sign that an internal Sunni power struggle is spreading.
The explosion in Baqouba came as Iraqi and U.S. forces fanned out in the Sunni stronghold of Amariyah in the capital, enforcing an indefinite curfew after heavily armed residents clashed with al-Qaida in Iraq fighters, apparently fed up with the group’s brutal tactics.
“Al-Qaida fighters and leaders have completely destroyed Amariyah,” said Abu Ahmed, a Sunni who said he joined in the clashes. “No one can venture out, and all the businesses are closed. They kill everyone who criticizes them and is against their acts even if they are Sunnis.”
Other residents said that the clashes began after al-Qaida militants abducted and tortured Sunnis from the area. That prompted a large number of residents, including many members of the rival Islamic Army, to rise up against the terror network. U.S. forces joined them in the fighting Wednesday and Thursday.
U.S. and Iraqi officials have claimed recent success in the effort to isolate al-Qaida, particularly in the western Anbar province, where many Sunni tribes have banded together to fight the terror network.
A growing number of Sunni tribes have been turning against al-Qaida elsewhere, as well, repelled by its brutality and religious extremism.
The extremists also are competing with nationalist groups for influence and control over diminishing territory in the face of U.S. assaults, a situation exacerbated by the influx of Sunni fighters to areas outside the capital as they flee a nearly four-month-old security crackdown.
Official casualty figures from the fighting in Amariyah were not available. But a local council member, who declined to be identified, said that at least 31 people, including six al-Qaida militants, were killed and 45 other fighters were detained in the clashes. The council member also said that an indefinite curfew was imposed starting at 6 a.m. yesterday.
The explosion in Baqouba came as residents said that al-Qaida was trying to regain control of the Tahrir neighborhood from the 1920 Revolution Brigades, a group of officials and soldiers from the ousted regime who have allied themselves with security forces against al-Qaida.
Local police said that at least two members of the rival insurgent group were killed. The bomber was affiliated with al-Qaida in Iraq, according to police who would not be named because they feared retribution.

Violence rising in Saudi schools
Sat, 02 Jun 2007 02:29:02
Violence in schools is a growing problem in Saudi Arabia and news about pupils attacking teachers feature prominently in the local media.
An English teacher was recently filmed and photographed being beaten black and blue until he fell unconscious after refusing to increase his pupils' examination marks, a local paper reported Friday.
Another schoolteacher had a gun put to his head and was forced to helplessly watch his car being torched after reporting two of his pupils joyriding outside the school where he teaches.
Teachers in the kingdom are horrified by what is happening and are calling on the authorities to provide them with protection.
A recent study conducted by two students under the supervision of Khadija Kaj Itani, an assistant professor at Effat College, showed that aggressive behavior is present at both intermediate and secondary schools, regardless of whether the schools are government-run, private or international.
The survey also showed that international schools tend to be the most violent, followed by government schools and then private schools. Victims include fellow pupils, schoolteachers, administration personnel, security guards and tea boys.
The study, which was conducted in Jeddah, added that in smaller towns and villages, violence tends to stem from tribal differences. Itani expressed concern at the findings and said that if the material taught at schools is beyond the grasp of pupils then this can cause them to react violently.
“Pupils in this day and age are strong but unwise. They can react violently especially when their parents play a minimal role in their lives,” he said.
Itani added that children copy their parents. “If parents stop yelling then children will also. The parenting style must teach children how to behave well with other people and how to become acceptable members of society. Teachers should also become more understanding of opposing views and open channels of communication with them,” she said.
According to her, low self-esteem and jealousy are also contributing factors. “The type of media that children, especially teenagers, are exposed to affects their behavior. From an early age, children are exposed to a lot of violence,” she said and added that this type of exposure messes up children's minds and emotions.

Pro-Taliban militants kill 13 in Pakistan
2007/6/1
By Ishtiaq Mahsud DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan, AP
About 100 suspected pro Taliban militants attacked the house of a government official in northwestern Pakistan before dawn Thursday with a hail of gunfire, rockets and grenades, killing 13 people, police said.
Sanaullah Khan, an area police chief, said another two people were injured in the attack near the village of Guman, 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Dera Ismail Khan and 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the troubled down of Tank.
"The attackers fired rockets, threw hand grenades and used guns" for about 30 minutes before fleeing, he said.
The dead included six members of the same family and seven guests. Among the slain were Pir Aurangzeb Khan, the brother of Ameerud Din, the top administrator of the Khyber Tribal region in North West Frontier Province, bordering Afghanistan.
Another police official said the family had recently received threats.
Tank lies in a swath of territory near the Afghan border where Islamic militants have challenged the government's authority with increasing success over the past year. The area has been the site of several deadly attacks over the past week.
It is also not far from the South Waziristan tribal region where remnants of the Taliban and al-Qaida are believed to be hiding, and where the military has carried out scores of operations against foreign and local militants.
Analysts say pro-Taliban groups are extending their influence from the semiautonomous tribal region next to the Afghan border. The area is considered a haven for Taliban guerrillas fighting foreign troops in Afghanistan as well as a possible hiding place for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.
The government also faces militancy in the southwestern region of Baluchistan.
In the latest incident there, an assailant on a motorcycle hurled a grenade at the offices of a state-run gas company in the provincial capital, Quetta, killing a security guard, police said Monday.

Kenya jails pastor's wife in "miracle baby" case
Thu 31 May 2007, 5:39 GMT
[-] Text [+] NAIROBI (Reuters) - A Kenyan court sentenced the wife of a British-based evangelical preacher to two years in jail on Wednesday for stealing a child in an ongoing saga of missing infants said to be "miracle babies" produced by prayer.
Mary Deya, and two other women including a British citizen, were convicted of snatching a baby from a maternity hospital in Kenya in 2004.
"I find the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubts. ... I therefore convict each to two years imprisonment," Nairobi High Court principal magistrate Teresia Ngugi said in her ruling.
Deya, who denied the charges and plans to appeal, has two more similar cases pending. The two jailed with her were fellow Kenyan Rose Kiserem and a British citizen Miriam Nykeo.
Kenyan authorities also want to extradite Deya's husband, Gilbert Deya, on charges of abducting six children between 1999 and 2004. Deya and his church deny the charges, saying their prayers enable infertile women to give birth.
Kenyan police suspect the pastor, whose ministry is based in south-east London, may have been involved in the disappearance of as many as 20 children, selling some of them to childless couples in Britain.
Gilbert Deya promotes himself as archbishop in the Gilbert Deya Ministries which, according to its Web site, is "the fastest growing ministry in the UK and worldwide with a membership of over 34,000 in the UK alone."

Yemen clashes
More SANAA, May 31 (Reuters) - At least six people were killed and 10 wounded when an artillery shell hit a petrol station in the north of Yemen where government forces have been battling Shi'ite rebels since January, residents said on Thursday.
A source close to the government said the shell might have been fired by the rebels.
"The blast is believed to be the result of a shell like the type used by the rebels. It fell on a petrol station leading to an explosion on Wednesday," said a local source close to the government. He said all those killed and wounded were civilians.
But a tribal source said the army could have fired the shell at the petrol station in the town of Sehar "by mistake".
A source close to the rebels said he had no information on the incident. The rebels oppose Yemen's close alliance with the United States. Yemeni officials say the group wants to reinstall the Islamic rule that was overthrown in 1962.
A government source said about 80 soldiers and 60 rebels had been killed in the battles over the past two weeks. Sources close to the rebels did not have figures.
Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands have fled their homes due to the heavy clashes.
Sporadic but fierce fighting between the rebels, led by Abdul-Malik al-Houthi and the state forces erupted last year after the group attacked government installations in the northern province of Saada, triggering a security crackdown.
Yemen, the ancestral homeland of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, joined the U.S.-led war on terrorism after the Sept. 11 attacks on U.S. cities. The rebels are not linked to al Qaeda.

Pakistan Militants Kidnapping School Children for Jihad
District council demands action against Jihadi outfits

PESHAWAR -- Parents in the northern districts of Upper Dir of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province (NWFP) accused Jihad outfits for abducting their children from schools for jihad.
A doctor and a radio mechanic accused militants for kidnapping their children to train them for jihad in the training camps. They later recovered their children from the militants and brought the issue into the notice of the district council.
Islamic religious groups have great influence in the NWFP northern districts from where around 10,000 volunteers on the call of Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Muhammadia (TNSM), a religious organization working for establishment of Sharia in the area, Chief Sufi Muhammad went for jihad against the U.S. when the latter attacked Afghanistan.
Many of these volunteers were killed or captured by the U.S. and Afghan forces during the fight. Some of them were released from the Northern Alliance forces in Afghanistan by paying hefty amount while the whereabouts of a large number of these activists are still unknown. The TNSM leader came back to Pakistan but was arrested by security forces and he is still in jail on charges of instigating thousands of persons for jihad in Afghanistan.
A meeting of the district council of Upper Dir condemned the act of the militants of sending school boys for jihadi training without the consent of their parents. The council asked the provincial government to take stern action against the militants involved in the kidnapping of school students.
A member of the council, Hasham Hussain, raised the issue of schoolchildren's abduction by jihadi organizations from a private school and told the council that parents were unaware that jihadis had taken their children for jihad. Two students of a private school, one the son of a doctor and the other the son of a radio mechanic, were abducted for jihad training without their parents' consent.
"Schoolchildren from private schools are taken for jihad without their parents' permission... this practice is un-Islamic, unlawful and immoral. The district administration knows that jihadis are ruining children’s lives in the name of jihad but no action is being taken," Hussain was quoted as saying.
District Nazim Sahibzada Tariqullah said the parents of the two children should have report the incident to the police and inform him, the district coordination officer and senior police officials.
During the discussion some member of the council warned NGOs working in the district to abandon their activities and leave the area. They accused NGOs of spreading obscenity and vulgarity instead of carrying out developmental work.

Pakistani Christian sentenced to death over blasphemy charges
Posted May 31st, 2007 by TariqueMuslim World News By DPA
Islamabad : A Pakistan court has sentenced a Christian to death on blasphemy charges in a video trial in the central city of Lahore, media reported Thursday.
Police registered a case against Younis Masih in September 2005, two days after he allegedly made derogatory remarks about the Prophet Mohammed, the Daily Times newspaper said.
Masih was also fined 100,000 rupees (about 1,600 US dollars) in the judgement Wednesday after a trial in which he was only seen via video link, owing to death threats issued by Islamic extremists.
Defence attorney Pervez Chaudhry, who also received similar warnings, said the verdict would be challenged in a higher court.
Human rights groups have strongly criticized Pakistan's blasphemy laws as these have been misused by Islamic fundamentalists to persecute religious minorities.
Ordinary citizens have also publicly accused rivals of blasphemy to settle personal scores.
Generally, death sentences for the crime are commuted to a long period of incarceration.
