A trial has been set for an Urbandale imam accused of abusing a mother and daughter during a religious ritual.
Nermin Spahic, 40, was charged with third-degree sexual abuse and two counts of sexual exploitation by a clergy. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
A judge set a pre-trial conference for Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. and the trial is scheduled for Dec. 2 at 9 a.m.
Johnston police arrested Spahic Aug. 12. A woman told police she had called Spahic to her home to give guidance on a “personal issue” her 18-year-old daughter was going through.
Spahic serves as an imam at the Des Moines Islamic and Cultural Center Bosniak.
The women told officers Spahic had sexually assaulted them both.
He admitted to police he performed the ritual but denied any inappropriate contact.
