Hounded by cops, caste panchayat, Muslim woman goes into hiding

Chandigarh: Amid the din about more power to women, a Muslim woman was forced to go into hiding. Her crime: she fell in love and married man from the same religion but a different caste. As a result, she incurred the wrath of a caste panchayat of Muslims and also the UP police.
A gathering of legal luminaries and intellectuals, who assembled here to formulate a strategy against honour killings and honour crimes, was stunned when Shabnam appeared after
a month in hiding and narrated her story. “I am ashamed of being a woman, falling in love and marrying a man from my own religion but a different caste,’’ she said. She said she had nowhere to go as her husband has deserted her. Her parents are also being hounded by the UP police. Her plight prompted legal luminaries to suggest writing to the CJI.
Shabnam said she was a Syyed before marrying a Sheikh. “When the community came to know about it, they forced my husband to retract the marriage. I was framed in a theft case by the Lucknow police and detained at the behest of my husband. He refused to recognize our marriage,’’ she said.
Same-gotra marriage: Khap ostracises family
Bhiwani (Haryana): A community ‘panchayat’ on Sunday asked the family of a man, who it claims had married within the same gotra, to leave its village within a week and sell its property in three months. The Faugat Khap panchayat also asked the villagers of Samaspur to sever all connection with the family of Sri Bhagwan, who married Anita of Makdani from the same gotra. Earlier, the panchayat had ordered the social boycott of Randhir Singh, the father of Bhagwan, and ordered him to leave the village by March 2. AGENCIES
