Police turn blind eye to rampant kidnapping and rape of Hindu girls in Pak's Sindh province Friday, March 26, 2010,10:42 [IST]
Karachi, Mar.26 (ANI): A 12-year-old Hindu girl, Nandini, is still missing as police officials have failed to recover her even after four months of her being allegedly picked up by an influential individual of the city.
Buzz up!Officials have no information regarding Nandini's whereabouts, who was kidnapped in December last year, and the accused named Younis has not been arrested despite the fact that there is a first information report (FIR) registered against him.
It is not an isolated case where Hindu families have been left with little choice than to lament over their fate, with no help in sight from the authorities.
Several Hindu families, which are at the receiving end of the government's apathy, are awaiting justice for years but there's no one to listen to their plight.
According to Roshni Research and Development Welfare Organisation (RRDWO), a non-government organisation (NGO), a research has shown in majority of cases involving the minority community, police only provide lip service and do not seriously hunt down the criminals.
The NGO's President, Muhammad Ali, cited another case of a 17-year-old Hindu girl, who was kidnapped and raped by four men, in January this year. All the four accused were granted pre-arrest bail by a session court.
"Rape is a non-bail able offence in Pakistan and this is against criminal procedure and the law," The Daily Times quoted Ali, as saying.
Ali said the Asian Human Rights Commission has also expressed its serious concern over the case.
"Instead of giving justice to the victim's family, the police later arrested the victim's father on a false offence, and have obstructed attempts by the family to file an FIR and obtain a medical report," he added.
Ali also disclosed that an 'illegal' tribal court had asked the victim girl to marry her rapist and convert to Islam following which the girl had threatened public self-immolation.
"Not arresting the rapists and rather forcing a Hindu girl, who is a rape victim, to convert to Islam and be the wife of the culprit could be double trauma for the victim. It is another form of further victimising a woman," he said.
Ali also appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to take suo moto notice of the gross human rights violations of the poor and the marginalized minorities in the Sindh province at the hands of police and lower judiciary, who are influenced by the feudal and local elite. SAN’A, YEMEN—Some of Yemen's most influential Islamic leaders, including one the U.S. says mentored Osama bin Laden, have declared supporters of a ban on child brides to be apostates.
The religious decree, issued Sunday, deeply imperils efforts to salvage legislation that would make it illegal for those under the age of 17 to marry.
The practice is widespread in Yemen and has been particularly hard to discourage in part because of the country's gripping poverty — bride-prices in the hundreds of dollars are especially difficult for poor families to pass up.
More than a quarter of Yemen's females marry before age 15, according to a report last year by the Social Affairs Ministry. Tribal custom also plays a role, including the belief that a young bride can be shaped into an obedient wife, bear more children and be kept away from temptation.
A February 2009 law set the minimum age for marriage at 17, but it was repealed and sent back to parliament's constitutional committee for review after some lawmakers called it un-Islamic. The committee is expected to make a final decision on the legislation next month.
Some of the clerics who signed Sunday's decree sit on the committee.
The group behind the declaration also includes Yemen's most influential cleric, Sheik Abdul-Majid al-Zindani, whom the United States has branded a spiritual mentor of bin Laden. Al-Zindani denies being a member of al-Qaida.
In a further challenge to the rights groups pushing for a ban, government officials are reluctant to challenge al-Zindani and other conservative tribal and religious figures whose support they need to hold onto power in the fragile nation.
The religious leaders organized a protest against the legislation on Sunday by a group of women. Hidden behind black face veils and robes, the women carried signs that read "Yes to the Islamic rights of women."
"I was married at 15 and have many children now," said one of the women, Umm Abdul-Rahman. "And I will marry my daughter at the same age if I decide she is ready for it."
The issue of Yemen's child brides vaulted into the headlines three years ago when an 8-year-old girl boldly went by herself to a courtroom and demanded a judge dissolve her marriage to a man in his 30s. She eventually won a divorce, and legislators began looking at ways to curb the practice.
In September, a 12-year-old Yemeni child-bride died after struggling for three days in labour to give birth, a local human rights organization said.
A rights group pushing for a ban planned a protest for Tuesday.
"The government has two options: to give girls in Yemen a chance at life or to condemn them to a death sentence," said Amal Basha, chairwoman of the group, Sisters Arab Forum in Yemen.
Yemen once set 15 as the minimum age for marriage, but parliament annulled that law in the 1990s, saying parents should decide when a daughter marries.

Forced Conversions and Racial Discrimination in Pak: Sikhs protest UN inaction

PATIALA: Sikhs held protests, against United Nations’ inaction to stop continued forced conversion of minorities to Islam and grave abuse of human rights of minorities and women in Pakistan, to coincide with International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination, at Patiala near Dukhniwaran and Singh Sabha Gurudwaras, Monday.
Dr. Manjit Singh Randhawa, President of Sikh Nation Organisation, said that Sikhs appealed to the international community to prevail upon Pakistan to repeal the 'Nizam-e-Adl 2009 Regulation' that has “legitimized and legalized tyranny” by ‘Taliban’, in complete disregard to its international commitments under various UN Conventions, to safeguard Human Rights of its citizens within international borders of Pakistan.
He maintained that without repealing the Regulation it was impossible to save lives, property and Shrines of Minority Sikh and Hindu Communities in Swat Valley and North West Frontier Province in Pakistan that has been placed under ‘Taliban Rule’ by repealing all Pak Laws to maintain law and order.
The Regulation has taken away Human Rights of Women and female Children, whose freedom of conscience has been put to unreasonable restrictions and are subjected to honour killings, whipping, torture, degrading treatment and punishment in Swat Valley and adjoining province, in a country signatory to U.N. Conventions on Human Rights, he added.
Sikhs also appealed the international community to support their demand for ‘Vatican’ like status to ‘Nanakana’ Sahib along with eighteen thousand acres property of the shrine, to develop a “fear free abode for humanity”, without which “personal freedom” and “dignified survival” of Sikhs, Hindus, Christian and other Minority Communities seemed impossible.
They shamed United Nations Human Rights system for its "observed silence" on systematic and undeterred persecution of minorities that stood reduced to negligible level in Pakistan, as a result of “forced conversions, killings and migration” in the Islamic country that is signatory to various U.N. Conventions on Human and Minority Rights and Conservation of diverse Cultural and Religious World Heritage of Humanity.

Porn videos found on imam’s mobile
Saudi Gazette report
JEDDAH – A Saudi primary school teacher and imam and Khateeb of a mosque east of the city has been arrested on charges of indulging in sorcery, according to a Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Hai’a) official, Al-Watan Arabic newspaper reported Monday.
Over 50 pornographic video clips were also found stored in the imam’s mobile phone, the official was quoted as saying.
The imam was also accused of sheltering and having under his sponsorship an Arab national who engaged in sorcery and practiced it inside the mosque.
The imam was arrested with the help of a Sudanese sorcerer whose assistance was sought by the former to “have a married woman divorced”. The imam allegedly made the phone call seeking the help of the Sudanese as the latter was being taken away by the police for his involvement in sorcery.
The Sudanese cooperated and agreed to guide a Hai’a raiding team to the imam who initially offered some resistance but was later overpowered, the newspaper said.
The Hai’a official said the Saudi was imam of a big mosque in a district east of Jeddah and used to practice ruqya – treatment with Qur’anic verses – in the same mosque with an Arab national, who is now out of the country.
Jeddah Police spokesman said the case is now with Al-Jamea Police Station which released the suspect after completing investigations.
The case has now been referred to the Commission for Investigation and Prosecution.

Imam among seven men arrested for homosexual activity
By Ahmed Naish | December 7th, 2009 | Category: Society | 42 comments
A group of men, including an imam, were arrested in Alif Alif atoll Maalhos on Thursday after photos and videos emerged of the seven engaged in homosexual activity.
An islander who spoke on condition of anonymity told Minivan News a group of teenagers from the island came upon the video CDs in the house of one of the suspects. When the CDs began to be circulated in public, the “island elders” alerted police.
“It came as a big shock to everyone on the island to see that [the imam] was one of them. He gives the Friday sermons at the mosque every week,” he said. “He is a well respected person on the island and we saw him as our religious leader.”
Besides the imam, the pornographic videos featured a mosque caretaker, a carpenter and another man the islanders believe to be mentally unstable, the islander claimed.
“He is a deranged person. We have always seen him running around the island naked,” he said.
Of the three men not featured in the video, two were incriminated in photos found along with the videos, he continued, while the third was believed to have filmed the pornography.
Three of the suspects were married with children, the islander said, while one of them included a second, retired imam. The youngest of the seven men was aged 27, while the rest were over 45 years of age, he said.
Miadhu reported other islanders as claiming that two of the seven men consider themselves “as husband and wife.”
Sergeant Ahmed Shiyam from the Maldives Police Service confirmed the arrests were made on Thursday following a report from the islanders. The seven men are currently in police custody. All were residents of Maalhos.
A spokesperson for the Islamic Ministry said they were not yet aware of the case and could not speculate on any measures that could be taken. Meanwhile Abdullah bin Mohamed Ibrahim, President of Islamic NGO Salaf Jamiya, also said he was unable to comment as they did not have complete information on the case.
Under the existing penal provisions, the punishment for sodomy is 19 to 39 lashes, banishment or imprisonment of up to three years.
Another islander from Maalhos who spoke to Minivan News said a group of people had become suspicious of the seven men before the videos came out.
“They have been following them around for a long time now,” he said. “They were suspicious before, and the videos just confirmed it.”

Afghanistan Taliban 'using human shields' - general
US Marines have come under heavy fire in Marjah
Taliban militants are increasingly using civilians as "human shields" as they battle against a joint Afghan-Nato offensive, an Afghan general has said.
Gen Mohiudin Ghori said his soldiers had seen Taliban fighters placing women and children on the roofs of buildings and firing from behind them.
The joint offensive in southern Helmand province has entered its fifth day.
US Marines fighting to take the Taliban haven of Marjah have had to call in air support as they come under heavy fire.
They have faced sustained machine-gun fire from fighters hiding in bunkers and in buildings including homes and mosques.

Moshtarak diary: Day five
Gen Ghori, the senior commander for Afghan troops in the area, accused the Taliban of taking civilians hostage in Marjah and putting them in the line of fire.
"Especially in the south of Marjah, the enemy is fighting from compounds where soldiers can very clearly see women or children on the roof or in a second-floor or third-floor window," he is quoted by Associated Press as saying.
"They are trying to get us to fire on them and kill the civilians."
As a result, his forces were having to make the choice either not to return fire, he said, or to advance much more slowly in order to distinguish militants from civilians.

Civilians die in Kandahar strike
Nato has stressed that the safety of civilians in the areas targeted in the joint Nato and Afghan Operation Moshtarak is its highest priority.
Journalist Jawad Dawari, based in Lashkar Gah, told BBC Pashto that Taliban fighters remained in many residential areas of Marjah and were defending their positions with heavy weapons.
"It is difficult for the Afghan army and Nato to storm Taliban-held areas because to do so may inflict heavy civilian casualties and there are still a lot of civilians in Marjah.
"Whenever they launch an attack, the Taliban take refuge in civilians' homes."
He had spoken to many local people in Marjah, he said, and they had all said the Nato offensive had made little progress since the first day.
An Afghan military official had told reporters that the backbone of the resistance came from foreign fighters - Pakistani and Arab - and that it was feared they might resort to suicide attacks, he added.
ANALYSIS
By Frank Gardner, BBC News, Kandahar
There's a lot of fighting going on in the Marjah area - the estimation of the number of insurgents there varies between 100 and 300. They are not all hardcore Taliban by any means. The US commander there, Brig Gen Larry Nicholson, said he thought about 80% were probably less committed local fighters hired to do this, as opposed to being hardcore, ideological jihadists.
The operation has taken a long time for a number of reasons - it's a big area, 200sq km, and they are having to cope with an unexpectedly large number of these IEDs. A lot of locals are telling the soldiers where the devices are but other IEDs are having to be defused very slowly.
The most senior US general in the south, Brig Gen Ben Hodges, gave the BBC a more upbeat assessment of Marjah, saying locals were coming out to give information on insurgents now that they were confident the forces involved in Operation Moshtarak were not leaving.
He said Afghan units would be staying for at least 30 days and the Marine battalions "for several months".
Speaking to the BBC after visiting Marjah, the commander of British forces in southern Afghanistan, Maj Gen Nick Carter, said the situation was dangerous, but that progress was being made.
He told the BBC's Frank Gardner it could take up to 30 days to clear the insurgents out, depending on when they lost the will to fight.
Troops taking part in the offensive have been having to deal with large numbers of improvised bombs.
American forces have found a so-called "daisy chain" - a long bomb rigged up from mortar bombs, rocket-propelled grenades and a motorbike, our correspondent says.
Nato has said that safeguarding civilians is its top priority
And British engineers have deployed a device called a "python" - a length of explosives designed to set off mines and clear a safe path through them, he says.
Afghan army chief of staff Besmillah Khan told the AFP news agency the threat from improvised bombs meant gains were coming "slowly".
Meanwhile, to the north, British forces have discovered an insurgent cache of stolen Afghan army and police uniforms.
The find suggests the Taliban could have been planning attacks disguised as Afghan security personnel, our correspondent says.
Nato says discussions with the local population on how to bring lasting security to the area are continuing, our correspondent adds.
Gen Hodges said several hundred police had been trained and would go into central Helmand once the situation was deemed appropriate.
British and Afghan troops are reported to be advancing more swiftly in the nearby district of Nad Ali than are their US and Afghan counterparts in Marjah.
Missiles 'on target'
Gen Carter confirmed on Tuesday a missile that struck a house outside Marjah on Sunday killing 12 people, including six children, had hit its intended target.
Afghan troops raise the national flag at a bazaar in Marjah
Gen Carter said the rocket had not malfunctioned and the US system responsible for firing it was back in use. Officials say three Taliban, as well as civilians, were in the house but the Nato soldiers did not know the civilians were there.
Initial Nato reports said the missile had landed about 300m (984ft) off its intended target. Gen Carter blamed these "conflicting" reports on "the fog of war".
Speaking on Tuesday, Dawud Ahmadi - a spokesman for Helmand Governor Gulab Mangal - said that 1,240 families had been displaced and evacuated from Marjah - and all had received aid in the provincial capital, Lashkar Gah.
Operation Moshtarak, meaning "together" in the Dari language, is the biggest coalition attack since the Taliban fell in 2001.
Allied officials have reported only two coalition deaths so far - one American and one Briton killed on Saturday.

Malaysian minister rejects child marriage reform
(AFP) – 13 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia's religion minister on Tuesday defended Islamic laws that allow girls under 16 to marry, amid a controversy over two youngsters who were married off to middle-aged men.
The issue has flared in Malaysia after reports that two girls aged 10 and 11 were wed in the conservative northern state of Kelantan last month. They have now been removed from their husbands.
Rights groups have called for the reform of Islamic laws that allow marriage under the age of 16 if religious officials give their consent. Sharia law runs in parallel with civil law in multi-ethnic Malaysia.
"There is no need to amend the law," Jamil Khir Baharom, a cabinet minister in charge of religious affairs, told reporters.
"The law already exists... marrying someone aged 16 and below requires the consent of the court. The court does not simply grant the consent," he said.
"Maturity is a subjective question. It depends on the development of the person. Maturity is not based on age solely."
Pressure group Sisters in Islam has called for an end to child marriages, saying the practice was "unacceptable" but continued in Malaysia because of a "belief that Muslim girls can be married off once they reach puberty".
"The minimum age of marriage for Muslim girls must be raised to 18 to be in compliance with the Child Act which defines children as those below the age of 18," it said in a statement.
Other citizens in the multicultural country -- where the population is dominated by Muslim Malays -- are not permitted to marry before the age of 18.
Malaysian authorities are investigating the case of the two girls in Kelantan, both linked to a man who is accused of leading an Islamic cult.
He is accused of marrying the 11-year-old girl and giving away his 10-year-old daughter to a family friend.
Sharia court officials told the New Straits Times Tuesday the 11-year-old's marriage was not approved in court.
The girl was found outside a mosque in the nation's capital over the weekend and is now being treated in hospital.
Women, family and community development minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has spoken out against the practice.
"A child of that age does not have the choice or capacity to give her full consent and, as such, child marriage is viewed within the context of force and coercion," she said in a statement to AFP.

SAUDI ARABIA: DEATH SENTENCE FOR LEBANESE MAGICIAN UPHELD
(ANSAmed) - JEDDAH, MARCH 12 - Judges of the General Court of Medina in Saudi Arabia confirmed a death sentence against Lebanese magician Ali Hussein Subat, accused of witchcraft and on trial for about two years. The forty-seven year old Subat was caught in the act of committing the crime in a Medina hotel room, covered with papers with magical symbols, while he was using herbs and amulets for one of his rituals. On December 8, pointed out Arab News' website, the Saudi Arabian Court of Appeals rejected the judges' sentence of first instance from the Medina court. The effects of the sentence were suspended, to give the man - a well-known magician on satellite TV programmes who performed with the name "Scheherazade Magician" - to "show repentance" and to verify the authenticity of the accusations against him. During the two years of the trial, Subat, who was also accused of fraud, admitted to practicing black magic rituals and contributing to the break-up of marriages. According to prosecutors of the general court, Subat allegedly practiced black magic publically on television in front of millions of spectators for years and did not show any remorse. According to the General Court, the death penalty sentence must serve "as a warning and deterrent so that others - foreigners in particular - do not perform sorcery in Saudi Arabia". Now the case will be heard by the Mecca Court of Appeals. (ANSAmed).

‘Sect leader practised witchcraft to marry daughter’
By ZALINAH NOORDIN

KUALA LUMPUR: The mother of the 11-year-old Kelantanese girl who was “married” to a 41-year-old man has claimed that he could have used black magic to fulfil his wish of marrying children.
Siti Sarnan Mat Ail, 42, whose daughter Siti Nur Zubaidah ended up being “married” to the religious sect leader after being abducted by him last month, alleged that he had also used religion to convince his followers that he had an agenda to expand the Prophet’s teachings.
Upset mum: Siti Sarnan talking to the press at the Sungai Buloh Hospital yesterday. Looking on is Shahrizat.
On Saturday, a Malay daily reported that the girl was found in a dazed state outside a mosque in Kepong on Friday, after being abandoned by her “husband”.
The daily reported that the sect leader had also married off his daughter to a middle-aged man.
Siti Sarnan, who met reporters after visiting her daughter with Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil at the Sungai Buloh hospital here yesterday, said her husband was initially talked into signing up their daughter at a religious school by the man.
She said the man, who already has four wives and six children, approached her husband on Feb 19 and convinced him that it would be good to send their daughter to a religious school in Machang.
“He also asked for our daughter to be married to him as she would be put under his care while attending religious school.
“All my husband could do was agree, even though he was not fully aware of what was happening,” claimed Siti Sarnan.
“My husband came back that night and told me to cook lunch the next day as there would be visitors coming to our house in Pasir Mas, Kelantan.
“Nine men came to our house with the man. My daughter was devastated when she learnt that her father had agreed to send her away. She refused to go but relented after my husband persuaded her,” Siti Sarnan said.
She said a police report was lodged on Feb 21 after the man failed to return the girl as promised.
Asked if she knew if the “marriage” was “consummated,” Siti Sarnan declined to comment. She, however, said her daughter was in a state of shock and traumatised by the ordeal.
“My daughter has now expressed her wish to be taken care of by her uncle in Tanah Merah and not by us,” Siti Sarnan said.
Meanwhile, Shahrizat urged the relevant authorities to take action against the man and those involved in the “reckless and irresponsible act”.
Such an act, said Shahrizat, was a contravention of Section 8 of the Kelantan Muslim Family Law Enactment 2002, which stated that any female below 16 was not allowed to enter into marriage, except with written permission from the Syariah Court.

Hounded by cops, caste panchayat, Muslim woman goes into hiding
Sanjay Sharma
Chandigarh: Amid the din about more power to women, a Muslim woman was forced to go into hiding. Her crime: she fell in love and married man from the same religion but a different caste. As a result, she incurred the wrath of a caste panchayat of Muslims and also the UP police.
A gathering of legal luminaries and intellectuals, who assembled here to formulate a strategy against honour killings and honour crimes, was stunned when Shabnam appeared after
a month in hiding and narrated her story. “I am ashamed of being a woman, falling in love and marrying a man from my own religion but a different caste,’’ she said. She said she had nowhere to go as her husband has deserted her. Her parents are also being hounded by the UP police. Her plight prompted legal luminaries to suggest writing to the CJI.
Shabnam said she was a Syyed before marrying a Sheikh. “When the community came to know about it, they forced my husband to retract the marriage. I was framed in a theft case by the Lucknow police and detained at the behest of my husband. He refused to recognize our marriage,’’ she said.
Same-gotra marriage: Khap ostracises family
Bhiwani (Haryana): A community ‘panchayat’ on Sunday asked the family of a man, who it claims had married within the same gotra, to leave its village within a week and sell its property in three months. The Faugat Khap panchayat also asked the villagers of Samaspur to sever all connection with the family of Sri Bhagwan, who married Anita of Makdani from the same gotra. Earlier, the panchayat had ordered the social boycott of Randhir Singh, the father of Bhagwan, and ordered him to leave the village by March 2. AGENCIES

Former legislator says he gave money to Delhi blast suspects
March 11th, 2010 - 11:49 pm ICT (UTC +0700) by IANS -
New Delhi, March 11 (IANS) A former Congress legislator from Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh Thursday admitted that he unwittingly gave money to two Delhi blast suspects after they escaped from the September 2008 Batla House encounter. A Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator, however, denied providing any monetary help to them.
According to Abdus Salam, Junaid alias Haris came to his house in Noida Sector 44 alongwith another friend around 4 p.m. Sep 19, 2008 and asked for some money to buy train tickets.
“I knew Haris as he was the son of a close friend of mine. He asked for some money to buy train tickets to go to Azamgarh and I gave them Rs.1400 to Rs.1500. I did not know that he was involved in Delhi blasts and came to know three days later when his picture appeared in a national daily,” Salam told IANS over phone.
Salam said by seeing the picture of other suspects, he came to know that the youth accompanying Junaid that day was Shahzad, a suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist also involved in Delhi blasts.
Police had earlier said that during interrogation Shahzad told them that a former legislator gave them money to travel to Azamgarh.
According to police sources, Shahzad also claimed SP leader Abu Azmi had helped them. But Azmi denied the allegations.
“I never gave money to them and I don’t know any one of them,” he told a TV channel over phone from London.
Salam denied informing police that Junaid took money from him but said he had asked Junaid’s father to take his son to police.
Five synchronised blasts — two in Connaught Place, two in Greater Kailash and one in a crowded market in Karol Bagh - occurred within a span of 31 minutes on Sep 13, 2008. Twenty-six people were killed and over 150 were injured in those blasts.

Vatican chorister and usher in gay prostitution scandal
One of Pope Benedict's ceremonial ushers and a member of an elite choir in St Peter's Basilica have been implicated in a gay prostitution ring, in the latest sexual scandal to taint the Vatican.

The Vatican Photo: GETTY IMAGES Ghinedu Ehiem, a Nigerian, was dismissed by the Vatican from a prestigious choir after his name appeared in transcripts of police wiretaps.
In the wiretaps, Mr Eheim is allegedly heard negotiating over the procurement of male prostitutes.
After the PR disaster, what does the future hold for Pope Benedict?
Pope launches YouTube channelThe wiretaps were carried out in connection with a probe into corruption in contracts to build public works, including the planned venue in Sardinia of last year's G8 summit.
Among four people arrested last month in the corruption probe was Angelo Balducci, an engineer who is a board member of Italy's public works department and a construction consultant to the Vatican.
Balducci is also a member of an elite group called "Gentlemen of His Holiness" – ushers who are called to serve in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace on major occasions such as when the pope receives heads of state or presides at big events.
Balducci was arrested on corruption charges and the allegations of prostitution emerged only later.
Excerpts of the wiretaps and police documents published in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica showed that Ehiem, 40, had been in regular contact with Balducci before Balducci's arrest last month and the subject of their conversation was gay sex.
A police document prepared for magistrates and published in part by La Repubblica said Balducci was in contact with Ehiem and an Italian who were part of what the police called "an organised network ... to abet male prostitution".
It was not immediately possible to contact Ehiem's lawyer.
A Vatican source said Balducci, who is still in jail, has been dismissed from the elite group of ushers and that his name would not appear in the next edition of the Vatican's directory.
"He obviously can't come back here after being accused of these things," the source told Reuters.
The latest black eye for the Vatican comes on the heels of major paedophilia scandals involving the abuse of children by priests in Ireland, Germany and the United States.
Balducci's lawyer, Franco Coppi, one of Italy's highest profile lawyers, said he had no comment on the newest accusations against his client, saying: "We have much more serious things to be concerned with right now," referring to the corruption charges.

Arif Pathan, a 54-year-old aide of Maharashtra Congress spokesman and MLC Sanjay Dutt, is said to have been detained by police in connection with the German Bakery blast in Pune, his family and friends alleged today.
While official sources confirmed that Pathan had been questioned — and that his name had come up during the probe into the 2008 Jaipur serial blasts — top police officers denied Pathan had been picked up for the attack. They also refused to comment on why the man was missing since being questioned by police on Wednesday as claimed by his family.
For the record, K P Raghuvanshi, chief of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad which is probing the blast, said his force had not picked up Pathan.
Pathan and his brother Feroz own a successful transport business in Kalyan in Thane district and their vehicles are known to mostly transport livestock to Nashik, Ahmednagar, Pune and other cities in the region. He was appointed Dutt’s official personal assistant about three months ago.

At least 500 dead in Nigeria religious attacks
By Aminu Abubakar (AFP) – 4 hours ago
JOS, Nigeria — Nigeria's government sent in troops to the flashpoint Jos region on Monday after machete-wielding gangs attacked Christian villages, killing at least 500 people, officials say.
Police arrested scores of people in the wake of the attacks which came just weeks after another outburst of Muslim-Christian violence, which left hundreds dead.
Newspapers said Muslim residents of the villages had been warned by phone text message to escape two days before the attacks.
Witnesses meanwhile described how the victims of Sunday's three-hour orgy of violence, mainly women and children, were caught in animal traps and fishing nets as they tried to flee their attackers, who hacked them to death.
The official death toll was initially put at a little over 100 but Dan Manjang, an advisor to the Plateau state government, said it had shot up.
"We have been able to make 95 arrests but at the same time over 500 people have been killed in this heinous act," Dan Manjang told AFP.
Government-run radio also reported that 500 people had been slaughtered in a raid on three villages on the fringes of Jos, capital of Plateau state.
Witnesses and local rights activists put the figure at between 200 and 250.
Much of the violence was centred around the village of Dogo Nahawa where gangs from the mainly Muslim Fulani ethnic group set fire to straw-thatched mud huts before embarking on the killing rampage in the early hours of Sunday.
Frank Tatgun, a resident of Dogo Nahawa, said that he had seen two armoured vehicles and three military trucks arrive in the village and scores of troops were now on patrol.
The explosion of violence is the latest between rival ethic and religious groups in the region. In January, 326 people died in clashes in Jos, according to police although rights activists put the overall toll at more than 550.
A curfew which was imposed after January's unrest is supposed to be still in place but Christian leaders said the authorities had done nothing to prevent the bloodshed.
"Shortly after the militants beseiged Dogo Nahawa ...we contacted the soldiers at exactly 1:30am. But we were shocked to find out that the soldiers did not react until about 3:30am after the attackers had finished their job and left," Plateau State Christian Elders Consulatative Forum (PSCEF) said in a statement.
"The attack is yet another jihad and provocation," said it added.
Witnesses said armed gangs had scared the victims out of their homes by firing into the air but most of the killings were as a result of machete attacks.
Survivors said the attackers were able to separate the Fulanis from the Beroms by chanting 'nage', the Fulani word for cattle. Those who failed to respond in the same language were hacked to death. One local paper said the gangs chanted "Allah Akhbar" -- Arabic for "Allah is the greatest", before breaking into homes.
Other residents said the few Muslims in the villages received SMS messages warning them to leave the area before the attack.
Many of the victims in Sunday's attacks were hacked to death as they tried to flee into woodland.
Rights activists said the attack appeared to be in revenge for the January clashe in which mostly Muslims were killed.
"I think it's a reprisal from the Fulanis for the earlier attacks," said activist Shehu Sani.
Locals said the attacks were the result of a spiralling feud between the Fulani and the rival Berom clan which started out with the theft of cattle, then worsened after a deadly revenge attack.
The office of Acting President Goodluck Jonathan said the security services in Plateau and neighbouring states had been placed on red alert to ensure the violence did not spread.

Lover murders pregnant girlfriend in public loo

Tags:Girlfriend|Murder|loverNAGPUR: Tragedy struck Sakhre family of Bhankheda the second time in just over a month. It had lost eldest son Prateek, 28, to illness just five weeks ago. On Sunday when the family was preparing for the ritual after completion of one-and-quarter month of Prateek’s death, the body of their second daughter, 20-year-old Pallavi, was found in community latrine for the women’s, strangled to death by her lover. Initial investigations revealed that Pallavi was fourmonth pregnant.
She was allegedly coaxed into physical intimacy before being strangled inside the congested latrine. Sources from Tehsil police station said that Pallavi was smothered before she was throttled with her own kameez and her partially naked body left. Police have arrested Pallavi’s paramour Mohammed Shamim, alias Shammi, 25, a married man, for the murder. Police have applied the charge of murder (302 of the Indian Penal Code) but are yet to decide on adding rape charge. Pallavi was first year student of arts’ stream in PWS college.
Shamim, a carpenter, was apparently having an amorous relationship with Pallavi for last two years. She had also undergone abortion once in the past. Sources claimed that Pallavi was demanding some money from Shamim to terminate her pregnancy and also wanted him to marry her. She had threatened Shamim, who is married to Rizwana Parveen and has a nine-month-old daughter, that she would go to his house on Sunday. Police said that this led to an altercation between them resulting in violent end. Sources said that Shamim’s wife Rizwana already knew about the affair and was livid about it. Police said that Shammi had called up on Pallavi’s younger sister Rinku’s cellphone at 10 pm on Saturday. He wanted to speak to Pallavi who was sitting outside the home.
“My sister left home after the call,” said Rinku adding that the family was busy preparing for Sunday’s ritual when Pallavi sneaked out of home without speaking to anyone. Family members were worried when she did not return in the night. “We were not sure what to do. This had never happened before. But we did not approach the police,” said Pallavi’s distraught father Yogeshwar. Pallavi’s mother Shardabai, who was sobbing uncontrollably, works with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. The family wanted to resume searching in the morning as relatives and others were expected at the residence for the rituals. In the morning, it was left shocked when a few women from the neighbourhood raised an alarm seeing body of Pallavi inside the latrine.

Dutch anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders makes strong showing in local polls
Geert Wilders, the radical anti-Muslim Dutch politician, was celebrating a symbolic breakthrough on Thursday as his party won control of its first municipality in a show of strength ahead of June's general election.

The PVV came first and second in the only two of 394 municipalities it contested.

Controversial anti-Muslim MP banned from the UK because of public order fearsIt was the strongest party with 21.6 per cent of the vote in Almere, a city of 187,000 people near the capital Amsterdam previously won by the PvdA, and came second in the seat of government, The Hague - the Netherlands' third largest city with 442,000 residents.
"What is possible in The Hague and Almere is possible all over the country," said Mr Wilders, who is awaiting a hate speech trial for calling Islam a fascist religion and likening the Koran to Hitler's Mein Kampf.
Mr Wilders was arrested and deported from Heathrow in February 2009 after the Home Office banned him on the grounds "that his presence in the UK could foster hatred and threaten community harmony in light of his anti-Muslim rhetoric".
This was the first municipal election for the PVV, with its mission of "fighting the Islamisation of the Netherlands".
The Netherlands' two biggest parties, the Christian Democratic Appeal and Labour Party, lost about two and six percentage points respectively with 93 per cent of the vote counted by Thursday morning, two weeks after their governing coalition collapsed at a national level.
The CDA of Jan Peter Balkenende, the outgoing prime minister, had dropped about two percentage points from 16.83 per cent in 2006.
The PvdA, the strongest party in the last round of municipal polls in 2006 with 23.45 per cent of the vote, now stood at about 16 per cent.
The CDA and PvdA had been in government nationally until January 20, when Wouter Bos, then finance minister and vice premier, withdrew his Labour party from the coalition in a spat over extending the Netherlands' military presence in Afghanistan.
Mr Balkenende now leads an interim government until early national elections brought forward to June 9.
Some 12 million Dutch out of a total population of 16.5 million were registered to vote in Wednesday's elections, viewed as a test of political loyalties and far-Right leanings ahead of national polls.

Kidnapped Sikhs were forced to cut hair and convert to Islam
By Deepak Lal
The story of kidnapped Sikhs in Pakistan has had a new revelation, with the two men revealing in their 42 day captivity they were forced to convert to Islam. Once Sarjeet Singh and Gurbinder Singh were kidnapped they were forced to go against their religious values by shaving off their beards and cutting their hair.
The two men were being reported to have been kidnapped by a group of militants from the Tehrik-e-Taliban, in which Jaspal Singh was beheaded on February 20th after his family failed to pay a ransom of Rs 30 million, which was demanded for all three men.
Pakistani forces recovered the two remaining men in the Orakzai and Khyber regions, which border neighbouring Afghanistan. Sarjeet and Gurendal were successfully rescued, but not un-scathed as Sarjeet suffered three bullet wounds in the furious gun-fire exchanges. We are being led to believe that Sarjeet was mistakenly shot because he had no beard or turban, with the Pakistani military not being able to tell the difference between the Sikh detainees and the barbaric Taliban militants.
Doctors at the Combined Military Hospital successfully removed two bullets from the body of Sarjeet Singh; he had been in a stable condition since. Gurendal had been reunited with his family in Peshawar where another Sikh man, Robin Singh has recently been abducted with a ransom of £140,000 being demanded. A five year old British boy has also been kidnapped with a ransom of £100,000 being ordered. Although Sikhs are a minority in Pakistan they have lived in Khyber for over 200 years.
India’s foreign minister, S M Krishna has come out to condemn the ‘barbaric’ attacks by the Taliban: “I rise to strongly condemn the beheading of Sardar Jaspal Singh in the tribal areas of Pakistan. This barbaric and heinous crime is deplorable in the strongest possible terms. His abductors, reportedly the Taliban, committed the grave crime when his family was not able to pay ransom money to the abductors. We express our sincere condolences to the family of the victim,'' said Krishna who is scheduled to visit Golden Temple in Amritsar on Friday. He has also claimed that Pakistan’s president has condemned the attacks also with the government pledging to find those guilty and India will be taking the issuer up with Pakistan.

Imam accused of child sex offences
Wednesday, February 10, 2010, 09:20
THE imam of a Stoke-on-Trent mosque has appeared before a court accused of committing serious sexual offences with two young boys.
Mohammed Hanif Khan, aged 41, is a leader at the Capper Street Mosque, in Tunstall. Yesterday he appeared before North Staffordshire Magistrates' Court, sitting in Fenton, to be charged with five offences.
The defendant is accused of the attempted rape and sexual assault of a 15-year-old boy in Meir last year.
He is further accused of three counts of rape on a boy under the age of 13 last year in Tunstall.
Prior to outlining the prosecution case to the magistrates, prosecutor Paul Moore said: "This is a very sensitive case.
"He is an imam at the Capper Street, Mosque, in Tunstall. He commands enormous power and respect in the community.
"Not only is he a figure of respect in this area, but he is a figure of respect outside this area because of his teachings."
As the charges were read and a brief outline of the facts given to the court, Khan, who wore a white shirt and black suit, listened intently from the dock in court one.
Mr Moore asked the court to remand the defendant, who gave his address as Bardsley Close, Ellesmere Port, in custody.
Emma Wiseman, defending, told the magistrates that the allegations against her client were denied.
She said Khan had been on bail for some considerable time while the matters had been investigated.
Miss Wiseman said the defendant had co-operated with the police and complied with bail conditions.
The case lasted for 35 minutes and Khan was remanded in custody to appear at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court for a preliminary hearing there on February 15.
According to his website, Khan became the first ever full-time Islamic Minister in the history of the British prison service in 2001.
He further progressed in introducing and setting up religious initiatives by becoming the first Muslim and non-Christian multi-faith co-ordinator of the British prison service in 2003.
In 2004 he visited Buckingham Palace to receive a Butlers' Trust Award from Princess Anne for his work in multi-faith and diversity.
He is patron and founder of Hizb ur Rasool (HUR), a charity dealing with youth issues and the propagation of Islam.
In 2008, the imam was among a group of business and community leaders drawn together to transform politics in Stoke-on-Trent.
He was appointed to the Governance Transition Board, a body tasked with making radical changes to the way the city is run.

Tension in Erattupettah; Chicken cooked inside Temples by Jihadis

Erattupettah: Police arrested four Jihadis and a Christian in connection with their attempt to denigrate a Temple.
The Jihadi gang entered Shri Dharma Sastha Temple in Thalanadu Ayyambara and dared to cook Chicken inside the Temple premises.
Based on the complaint filed by Devotees, Police arrested Jihadis - Saif, Naisin, Afsal and Mohammad and a Christian Jiji.
The anti Hindu assailants entered the Temple on Tuesday night and started cooking Chicken in order to desecrate the temples and threatened the few devotees who questioned them.
Following the arrest, Hundreds of Jihadis assembled in front of Police Station demanding the release of terrorists. Kerala Kshetra Samakshana Samithi condemned the incident aimed at destroying the communal harmony.
As expected Temple desecration is not of any news value to our 24 x 7 Channels nor to our Print media. But if pork was cooked inside or near to a mosque then whole state should have been burnt down in flames and our medias will conduct opinion polls and talk shows to establish the key word – ‘Hindutva Terrorism’.

Sikh Diaspora demands Vatican status for ‘Nanakana Sahib’
ANANDPUR SAHIB: While paying homage to two Pak Sikhs who were beheaded last week, continuous roaring of “Bole So Nihal Sat Sri Akal” and resolve to establish lasting “World Peace” by eradicating tyranny and misrule marked concluding day of the ‘Hola-Mohalla’, at Anandpur Sahib, Punjab.
Predominantly wearing traditional ‘Kesri’ headgear on Tuesday, Sikhs assembled from world over to join yearly congregation at the birth place of ‘Khalsa’, lauded the martyrdom of Jaspal Singh and Mehal Singh for keeping the Sikh tradition alive by making supreme sacrifice for refusing forcible conversion to Islam or to pay ‘Jiziya’ in Taliban-Ruled Pak province infested by thousands of heavily armed tyrants.
Sikhs saw a design in imposing the Law of ‘Shariah’ on ‘Vaisakhi’ last year and duly empowered by the ‘Nizam-e-Adl Regulation-2009’, Taliban’s choice to raze Sikh houses in ‘Qasimkhel’ in ‘Aurakzai’, on Martyrdom Day of Sikh General Hari Singh Nalwa of ‘Khalsa-Raj’, who was commander-in-chief of the province in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s time.
Dr. Manjit Singh Randhawa, President of Sikh Nation Organisation said that Sikh congregation appealed to United Nations and international community to prevail upon Pakistan to grant ‘Vatican’ like status to ‘Nanakana’ Sahib along with eighteen thousand acres property of the shrine, to develop a “fear free abode for humanity”, without which “personal freedom” and “dignified survival” of Sikhs, Hindus, Christian and other Minority Communities seemed impossible.
He alleged that all minorities stood reduced to negligible level in Pakistan, from more than 20% to less than 4% as a result of “forced conversions, killings and migration” due to persecution in the Islamic country that is signatory to various U.N. Conventions on Human and Minority Rights and Conservation of diverse Cultural and Religious World Heritage of Humanity.
