MADINAH, (Arab News): A 19th century mosque in Madinah's Al-Zahidiah district that was the subject of a dispute lasting several years has finally been demolished and is to be rebuilt 200 meters away from its original location, Al-Madinah newspaper reported.

‭The , ‬built by Sharif Muhammad bin Ali Al-Sanusi Al-Kabir around 1834‭, ‬has been demolished following deliberations lasting several years‭.‬

The mosque was thought to be standing over or close to the grave of a famous Companion of the Prophet Muhammad‭ (‬peace be upon him‭), ‬Sayyiduna Ra'fi bin Malik Al-Zurqi‭ (‬may Allah be pleased with him‭).‬
In May 2006‭, ‬the mosque‭, ‬along with other old buildings leading to Quba Mosque‭, ‬was marked for demolition as part of a regeneration project to improve the Central Zone‭, ‬the area around the Holy Mosque. ‬However‭, ‬local residents protested and asked Madinah Gov. ‬Prince Abdul Aziz bin Majed‭ ‬to investigate the matter and suspend the decision‭. ‬A committee was subsequently set up to verify the claims‭.‬Muhammad Al-Khatri‭, ‬director of Islamic Affairs and Endowments in Madinah‭, ‬said the committee did not find any evidence to support the view that Sayyiduna Ra'fi bin Malik Al-Zurqi‭ (‬may Allah be please with him‭) ‬is buried in the mosque's vicinity‭.‬However‭, ‬Anwar Al-Bakri‭, ‬a former professor of history at Taibah University and a member of the city's municipal council‭, ‬said he has documents and books confirming that the Companion's remains were buried at the side of the mosque‭. "‬Nevertheless‭, ‬excavations carried out by the committee failed to show signs of a body‭," ‬he added‭.‬

Reference to the mosque is mentioned in an epistle written by Ali bin Musa in 1885‭ ‬that describes Madinah's historic sites‭.‬

Not everyone is sure if the Companion is buried in Al-Katibiyyah Mosque‭. ‬Some say he was laid to rest in the northern section of the mosque‭, ‬while others claim he was buried elsewhere in the city‭, ‬citing historical texts to support their claims‭.‬

A third group believes the mosque should have remained as it is a house of God and that doubts remain on the exact location of the Companion's final resting place‭. ‬They also say the surrounding area is in need of a mosque and that the mosque was built in the 19th century in a distinct architectural style that makes it a historical landmark‭.‬

Sayyiduna Ra'fi bin Malik Al-Ansari Al-Khazraji Al-Zurqi fought alongside the Prophet (pbuh) in the Battle of Badr and was subsequently martyred in the Battle of Uhud in the third year of Hijrah‭ (‬625‭ ‬AD‭). ‬He belonged to the tribe of Al-Zuraiq whose homes historically extended from Bab Al-Anbariyyah to the Holy Mosque‭.‬

Sayyiduna Ra'fi was an early revert to Islam and was among those who first welcomed the Prophet (pbuh) when he migrated from Makkah to Madinah.‬
