Madani disciple held in sex abuse scandal

The Kerala Police on Monday arrested Ajaz alias Backer (27) of Nellikkuzhi, an activist of Islamist Abdul Nasser Madani’s PDP, for sexually abusing a minor girl several times in the infamous scandal that has now come to be known in the State as the Kothamangalam sex scandal. As many as 13 persons have so far been arrested in the case.

According to the police, Ajaz, who had contested in the last civic election as a PDP candidate, is one of the first persons to abuse the 14-year-old girl, a Class 10 student. The case is that about 20 persons, including certain classmates of the girl, had abused her over the past three months. The girl’s father, Muhammadali (48), was arrested on July 3 for conniving with the abusers.

The police had on Sunday issued a lookout notice for Ajaz who belonged to a well-to-do family. Till Monday, he was staying with some relatives but they were rendered unable to help him after the police told them that they too could be included in the case. The police said Ajaz had sexually exploited the girl by taking her to several places in his car many times.

Two classmates of the girl were arrested along with Ajaz on Monday but the police refused to reveal their identities. It is said that these boys were the first to abuse the girl in their classroom during the wait for the school bus after study hours. Since then, the girl had been taken to several places by different men with the knowledge of the father, the police said.

Ajaz, also a distant relative of the girl’s mother, had first abused her at his home during the marriage engagement of his sister, said the police, who also informed that he had already confessed to the crime. It is said that Ajaz was responsible for throwing her into the flesh trade market.

Local people are alleging that the lack of responsibility on the part of the school authorities had played a big role in the incident. The police are also examining the allegation that a teacher of the school was involved in the scandal. Though the list of accused contained 21 names now, there is every possibility that it could get longer, they indicated.

News of the heinous scandal broke after the girl fell unconscious in the school earlier this month. After it was found that the girl was in the third month of her pregnancy, the father insisted on conducting an abortion, which raised suspicion. The case was registered in this background and the police said that the girl had reported of being abused by 15 persons.

Muhammadali has already told the police that he had known of the scandal from the very beginning and also he had taken her to a man once. He also told the police that he knew all those who had abused the girl sexually. However, the girl had said that Muhammadali had not abused her.

Coming close on the heels of the revelation of the infamous Paravur sex scandal, in which a 14-year-old girl was presented to over 100 men in several cities in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for money by her father and through flesh trade agents, the Kothamangalam scandal has given a terrible shock to the Kerala psyche.

About 60 persons, including a middle level leader of the CPI(M), top bureaucrats, police officials, public works contractors and film personalities, have already been arrested in the Paravur sex scandal. The girl’s father, Sudheer, had first forcefully raped the girl several times and then sold her in the flesh market.

Arabs encouraged to pay for sex with women in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Indonesia's vice president said he saw nothing wrong with Arab men paying local women to marry and then divorcing them days or hours later, and suggested the practice -- dismissed by critics as legalized prostitution -- could boost tourism.
Jusuf Kalla made the off-the-cuff remarks at a travel industry seminar on how to attract more Arab visitors to Indonesia. It was not clear whether he was joking, though his comments caused laughter in the audience.

Kalla said that many Arab tourists currently traveled to the hill town of Puncak near Jakarta to enter into short-term marriage contracts with Indonesian women.

"We need different kinds of marketing campaigns, more targeted. At the moment most Arabs go to Puncak. If they go there looking for widows or divorcees, that is not our business, it is not a problem."

"So what if the man goes home, the lady gets a small house that is good isn't it?"

Women activists say the weddings, which are not recognized by the state but are blessed by Islamic clerics for a fee, they are a form of legalized prostitution and encourage poor families to sell their daughters for sex.

Media reports say the practice is common throughout Indonesia, and that most of the grooms are local men.

Puncak is notorious for prostitution, and signs in Arabic at several restaurants and hotels testify to the area's popularity with Arab visitors. But it was unclear on what Kalla was basing his assertion that Arab men were especially involved in short-term marriages.

Kalla was not available for comment Thursday, and he does not have a spokesman.
