செஞ்சி, ஜூலை 22: சாலை விரிவாக்கம் என்ற பெயரில் கோயில்கள் இடிக்கப்படுவதை கண்டித்து இந்து மக்கள் கட்சி சார்பில் போராட்டம் நடத்தப்படும் என்று அக் கட்சியின் தலைவர் அர்ஜுன் சம்பத் கூறினார்.
விழுப்புரம் மாவட்டம் செஞ்சி வட்டம் மேல்மலையனூரில் புகழ்பெற்ற அங்களாம்மன் கோயில் உள்ளது. இக் கோயிலுக்கு அர்ஜுன்சம்பத் புதன்கிழமை வருகைபுரிந்து அம்மனை வழிபட்டார். பின்னர் அருகே உள்ள வடவெட்டியில் நடைபெற்ற மகாசாந்தி யாகத்தில் கலந்து கொண்டு அம்மனை வழிபட்டார்.
பின்னர் செய்தியாளர்களிடம் அவர் கூறியது: மேல்மலையனூர் சரித்திரப் புகழ்பெற்ற இடம். தமிழகத்தில் லட்சக்கணக்கான மக்களுக்கு குலதெய்வமாக மேல்மலையனூர் அங்களாம்மன் விளங்குகிறார். ஆனால் இங்கு அடிப்படை வசதிகள் செய்துதரப்படவில்லை.
மேல்மலையனூர் ஊராட்சி மூலம் சாலை, குடிநீர், தங்கும் வசதி உள்ளிட்டவை செய்து தரப்படவில்லை. இந்து அறநிலையத் துறை இதில் கவனம் செலுத்தி உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும். வடவெட்டி அங்காளம்மன் இங்கு புதியதாக எழுந்தருளியுள்ளது. இங்கு மன நிறைவை பெற்றுள்ளேன். இந்த இடத்தில் தெய்வீகம் உள்ளது. மக்கள் நம்பிக்கை வைத்துள்ளனர். ஆனால் இந்த இடத்தை வருவாய்த் துறையினர் அகற்ற முயல்வதாக பொது மக்கள் தெரிவித்தனர். இது பக்தர்களின் உணர்வுகளை புண்படுத்துவதாக அமையும். இந்த இடத்தை அரசு மேம்படுத்த முயற்சிக்க வேண்டும்.
தமிழக அரசு சாலை விரிவாக்கம் என்ற பெயரில் பழம்பெருமை வாய்ந்த கோயில்களை இடித்து வருகிறது. சென்னையில் மட்டும் 32 கோயில்கள் இடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இது பக்தர்களை அவமதிக்கும் செயலாகும். உரிய மாற்று இடத்தில் முறையாக பூஜைகள் நடத்தி கோயில்களை அமைக்க வேண்டும். செம்மொழி மாநாட்டுக்காக கோவையில் 22 கோயில்கள் இடிக்கப்பட்டன. மதுரையில் 100 கோயில்கள் இடிக்கப்பட்டன. அரசின் இச் செயலை கண்டித்து தமிழகம் முழுவதும் இந்து மக்கள் கட்சி போராட்டம் நடத்த உள்ளது என்றார்.

Mariamman originated as an ancient village goddess related to fertility and rain.

The Hindu Temple serves Indian families who live in HCMC, but most of the devotees worshiping the goddess are Saigonese non-Hindus who believe in the power of Mariamman. Located at 45 Truong Dinh Street in HCMC’s District 3, the temple is regarded as a holy site and attracts thousands of people every week.

On the right is a statue of a goddess named Pechiamnan, a deity that destroys the devils. And on the left is a statue of a god named Madurai Veeran who is believed to be one of the great warriors of the southern kingdom of India who successfully fought against the enemy thanks to his bravery and talent, a man identified as Ba told me when I paid a visit to the temple.

Every devotee who comes to the temple buys offerings for the deities to show their gratitude to these gods. After finishing praying, the temple’s guardians will give manna, or so called gift of the gods. It may be a coconut, a small bag of green beans, a small bag of glutinous rice or a small bag of petals of jasmine, rose or marigold. People respect the manna as good luck that Mariamman brought to them.

Surrounding the outer walls of the temple are about twenty statues of gods such as Mahavishinu, Kaliyamman, Birman and Paramasivam. Also in District 1, there are two other Hindu Temples, Sri Thendayutthapani Temple and Sunbramaniar Temple. These enrich the city with a glimpse of Indian features in the spiritual life of Saigonese. The temple remains open to visitors from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and every Friday holds a ritual from morning to late evening.

Court questions rail surcharge on Kumbh pilgrims

Lucknow, Jan 28 : Citing the subsidy given to Haj pilgrims, a recently floated Hindu Personal Law Board has moved the Allahabad High Court seeking its intervention in getting free rail passes for poor pilgrims and a 50 percent concession to all others going to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela that is on in Haridwar now.

"The present policy of the government is discriminatory and in violation of the provisions of the Indian Constitution which disallows any discrimination on religious lines," the board's counsel Ashok Pandey said.

A division bench of the court here directed the railway administration to submit the circular whereby the surcharge was being levied by the Indian Railways on pilgrims travelling to Haridwar for the Maha Kumbh Mela.

According to the pubic interest litigation (PIL) moved Wednesday: "The railway administration are charging a surcharge ranging from Rs.3 to Rs.15 per ticket from every rail traveller going to Haridwar during the Kumbh Mela period."

Board secretary V.L. Misra told reporters here Thursday: "Since the local railway administration refused to provide us a copy of the circular, we urged the honourable court to direct them to submit a copy directly to the court."

The Court has fixed Feb 3 for the next hearing.

Madurai, Dec 31: The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court has directed the Sivaganga District police to provide protection to a Muslim woman and her Hindu husband, who reportedly received threats after their recent marriage.
When the case came up for hearing yesterday, the couple Murugan and Ariffa, told the court that both of them were above 18 years of age and had married as they were in love with each other.

Justices R S Ramanathan and T S Sivagnanam observed that the court could not interfere in the matter as they were were above 18 years and directed the police to give them protection, if they sought it.

The judges were disposing off a petition filed by Manickam, father of Murugan, who alleged that that his son was facing threats after marrying Ariffa.

Ariffa had reportedly converted to Hinduism after her marriage.

Joint operation begins against Kuki militants


SILCHAR, Nov 17: Sonai Police arrested 75-year-old village headman Seikhulian Singsong suspecting that he had links with Kuki militants who had allegedly attacked the 15th Indian Reserve Police (IRP) battalion outpost at Checkerchum recently. Police sources indicated that Kuki militants in collusion with some local residents of adjacent Kuki villages had attacked the Checkerchum outpost.

The militants sneaked into Cachar and attacked the 15th IRP battalion outpost and looted 26 sophisticated firearms and a huge quantity of ammunition from the jawans. Singsong was produced in Silchar court today and was later sent to police custody for three days.

A State police official said cadres of new Kuki militant organizations of Manipur have undergone training in Myanmar and Bangladesh. Militants who attacked the Checkerchum outpost had left some packets of food items bearing Burmese words on their labels, the police official said.

On the other hand, a new tension is brewing in the Bhuban Hills where Kuki and Hmar militants of the Christian community are planning to flush out Hindu Reang tribals living there. The militants have been continuously forcing the Hindu tribals to convert to Christianity, sources said. The Viswa Hindu Parishad had also alerted the district administration about it.

Local residents said one Lulun Kuki, who used to teach in a missionary school at Checkerchum, led the militants who attacked the Checkerchum outpost. Meanwhile, police, CRPF and the Army have launched a joint operation towards Mastul Hill where these militants are reportedly hiding with the arms they had looted from the outpost at Checkerchum.
A 30-member quick action force has already been sent to Checkerchum. The team will continue its operation throughout the area. Police sources said that the militants might sell the looted arms to Manipuri militant outfits.

President requests ruling on non-Muslim worship

Ahmed NaishPresident Mohamed Nasheed said yesterday he would seek advice from religious scholars on Islam’s position on allowing non-Muslims to worship in an Islamic community.

In his radio weekly address, the president said the constitution was "very clear" that laws contrary to Islam could not be made or enacted.

"It has become very important for me to find out what Islamic sharia says about not allowing foreigners who want to worship other religions in the Maldives," he said.

"When this bill comes from the People's Majlis for the president to ratify, the question before me will be what is the ruling in Islamic sharia on people of other religions living in an Islamic community to worship?"

The president said he needed an answer to the question before ratifying the bill. "When I know, it will be easier for me to make a decision on ratify the bill before it becomes law," he said.

Banned

Last week, a bill proposed by independent MP Ibrahim Muttalib Fares-Maathoda on outlawing places of worship for non-Muslims was sent to committee for further review with unanimous consent of all MPs who participated in the vote.

At the sitting, Muttalib said he learned that inquiries had been made with the government on establishing places of worship for expatriates and there was no law to forbid it.

“The other thing we have to think about today is that the government is considering establishing wedding tourism in the country and this will indirectly set up churches in the country,” he said.



While the bill states that foreigners or expatriates will be allowed to worship in the privacy of their homes, involving Maldivians or encouraging them to participate will be an offence.

The bill specifies a jail term of three to five years or a fine of between Rf36,000 (US$2,800) and Rf60,000 (US$4,669) for those in violation of the law.

Several MPs called for longer jail terms and higher fines, while others said foreigners in violation of the law should be deported.

But, some MPs argued the law was unnecessary as the constitution states that Islam shall be the basis of all laws and non-Muslims cannot be citizens.

Most MPs said laws were needed to seal off all avenues to freedom of religion being established in the Maldives.

Rights for Muslims

Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, state minister for Islamic affairs, told Minivan News today the president's office had not officially asked for the ministry’s advice.

"But the matter has been sent to the Fiqh academy and they will issue a decree on it," he said. Shaheem said he believed laws should be made to protect Islam and strengthen Maldivians' faith.

"Right now, Muslims aren't getting their rights," he said. "For example, there's no way for students to pray at schools, you can't get some jobs if you wear the burqa and there are some jobs where you can't grow beards."

He added the ministry had drafted regulations under the Religious Unity Act of 1994 together with the police and sent it to the president's office.

The regulations will be published in the government gazette next week, he continued, and would provide a legal framework to protect Islam.

Speaking to Minivan News today, Abdullah bin Mohamed Ibrahim, president of religious NGO Salaf Jamiyya, said he believed the bill was necessary to safeguard Islam.

"What the president said doesn't match what was in the bill," he said. "The bill is about making it illegal to build places of worship for non-Muslims. It doesn't make it illegal for foreigners to pray in their rooms or houses."

Abdullah said the association had information that Christian missionaries were trying to infiltrate the country and proselytize in the Maldives.

"I believe the bill is essential because the constitution does not forbid building places of worship," he said

GEORGE TOWN (Nov 19, 2009) : She was only seven when she was told to take an oath to embrace Islam and renounce her original faith.

Siti Hasnah Vangarama Abdullah, now 27, was in a government welfare home, Rumah Kanak-kanak in Taman Bakti, Kepala Batas, when she and several other children, some of whom were Chinese, were told by Perkim and the Penang Muslim Affairs Council to take the oath and renounce her original Hindu faith.

Born Banggarma Subramaniam, she practised Islam in the welfare home until the age of 15.

"I was more mature and realised what had happened, and started practising Hinduism again," she said in a press conference yesterday to highlight her plight.

Banggarma said ran away from the welfare home three years later, unable to cope with the stress of living in the home.

She married S. Sockalingam, 31, according to Hindu rites, but could not register the marriage as, according to the National Registration Department, she was a Muslim.

She also could not name Sockalingam as father of their two children, Kanagaraj, 8 and Hisyanthini, 2, in their birth certificates due to this.

"When I went back to the home in 2001 to collect my documents I was told that I was still a Muslim," she said.

Banggarma tried to change her name in her MyKad to her original name, but failed.

She and Sockalingam, who are residing in Tanjung Piandang, Perak, approached the relevant authorities to help her to revert to Hinduism, but their efforts were in vain.

They then turned to PKR Kedah's Deputy Youth chief Gooi Hsiao Leung for help.

Gooi, a lawyer, said no minor is capable of giving free consent to renounce his or her own religion and embrace Islam.

"At the age of seven, she would not have understood nor appreciated the meaning of the words in the oath. She could hardly even write and spell her own name," he told the press yesterday.

Gooi said the welfare home should have left Banggarma's original religion alone until she was old enough to decide for herself.

He said he would refer her case to the relevant authorities, and if necessary, take the issue to court.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Friday sought the Jammu and Kashmir government’s stand on a lawsuit seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the custodial death of a Jammu-based Hindu boy, Rajneesh Sharma who married a Muslim girl, Anchal Sharma, alias Amina Yousuf.

Rajneesh Sharma was allegedly tortured to death by state police in October this year at the behest of his father-in-law, a police inspector.

A bench of Justices Altmas Kabir and Cyriac Joseph sought the state government’s stand on the lawsuit filed by Rajneesh’s widow, Anchal Sharma, who was Amina Yousuf before she got married and converted to Hinduism.

The lawsuit was jointly filed by Anchal and Rajneesh’s mother and brothers, who fled Jammu apprehending danger to their lives and are hiding in the national capital.

The bench issued notice to the state government, seeking its reply by Nov 27. The bench also ordered Delhi Police to provide security to the girl and her in-laws.

Asking for an independent CBI probe into Rajneesh’s custodial death, Anchal and her in-laws have said he was tortured to death by station house officers (SHOs) and other officials of the Musnshi Bagh and Bakshi Nagar police station in Srinagar at the behest of the girl’s father in the first week of October.
The lawsuit said the couple got married against the wishes of her father and brother on July 21 this year after she had converted to Hinduism and left Jammu on a honeymoon tour to various places in northern and southern parts of the country.

Bangladesh Cabinet approves law to return confiscated property of Hindus

The Bangladesh cabinet on Monday approved a proposed law to return Hindu properties which were confiscated during the 1965 Indo-Pak war, when the country was eastern wing of Pakistan, ending a major violation of the rights of minorities in the country.

“The cabinet meeting (chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina) approved the Vested Property Return (Amendment) Act 2009 . . . it (proposed law) will now be placed to parliament for enactment,” prime minister’s deputy press secretary Mahbubul Haque Shakil told reporters.

The proposed law is meant to redress the long-disputed law of the Pakistani era, which was widely criticised as a major violation of the minority rights. During the Pakistan period, the law was called as Enemy Property Act.

The then Pakistani regime enacted the law to confiscate the property of the Hindu families who fled the country when the India-Pakistan war broke out in 1965 while the post independent Bangladesh government renamed it as the Vested Property Act 1974.

The final cabinet approval for the law came after some amendments were made to it in line with the cabinet directives two months ago.

Officials familiar with the process said under the amended proposal, the government would publish lists of “returnable and non-returnable vested property” within a certain period of times while the claimants could also seek review about “non returnable” property.

Under the law, government committees at district and upazila or sub-district levels would settle disputes regarding the disputed property.

Awami League had enacted the law to return the minority property at the fag end of its previous 1996-2001 tenure setting a two-year implementation deadline but the subsequent Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) sat on it exposing it to a natural death.

The past military-backed interim government, however, enacted another ordinance under emergency rules with identical objectives of settling the long-standing issue but it too faced a natural death as the incumbent Awami League decided not to ratify it in parliament.

A parliamentary watchdog on March 11 this year asked the land ministry to draft the new Vested Property Return Act restoring the six-month deadline for local authorities to compile a list of land seized under the law.

Many Hindus were unable to recover landholdings lost because of discrimination under the now-defunct Vested Property Act, an East Pakistan-era law that allowed the Government to expropriate “enemy”, in practice Hindu, lands.

The then Pakistani government had seized approximately 2.5 million acres of land from Hindus, affecting nearly 10 million Hindus in the country until parliament scrapped it in April 2001.

The 2001 law stipulated that land that was seized under the be returned to its original owners, provided that the original owners or their heirs remained resident citizens.

AHMEDABAD: A city-based Christian boy, who wanted to divorce his Hindu wife, was horrified to find that his marriage with her did not stand at all!


Nilesh Narin married Kashmira Banker as per Hindu rituals in April 2002 and they were blessed with a child the following year. However, Kashmira deserted Nilesh in 2006, which made him approach the Ahmedabad family court claiming that his wife was married to one Ashish Surti in 1998 which was still valid when he married Kashmira. Therefore, the court should declare his marriage with Kashmira void. To his surprise, the court held that their marriage was not legal at all and there was no question of declaring it void on grounds that Nilesh gave.
Kashmira contested the case and proved in court that she had already divorced her first husband before marrying Nilesh. But at the end of the case, Nilesh came out of the court in March this year dejected, when the judge concluded that the court cannot declare the marriage void the way he wanted. The family court judge held that the marriage could not be considered legal and valid as per Hindu Marriage Act, because one of them was not a Hindu during marriage.

Nilesh then moved Gujarat High Court to declare his marriage void.

His counsel cited an Andhra Pradesh High Court’s order holding that a marriage between a Christian and a Hindu taken place as per Hindu rituals is ‘void ab initio’ and therefore a nullity, which was also upheld by the Supreme Court.

After hearing the case, a division Bench of Justice RM Doshit and Justice SD Dave observed that such a marriage is void as per law and the family court should have declared it annulled. The High Court finally declared the marriage as void.

Some 325 people came together last week to celebrate two important events: the

Inauguration of the Hindu Temple of Charleston, and Deepavali, the Hindu Festival of Lights.

The temple, located on College Park Road in Ladson next to the Harvest Center Church, is the first Hindu Temple in the Lowcountry and one of five in the state. It will serve as a place of worship, education, and cultural promotion for some 400 families in this area, said executive committee member Peyush Dwivedi.

Worshippers of all ages and backgrounds gathered about 3:30 p.m. for the ceremonies, which included a cultural presentation done by some of the children, prayers, a celebratory dinner, and fireworks.

“This is a very important holiday for us,” Dwivedi said.

“We have finally secured a place where we can carry out our religious and cultural functions,” noted Dr. Shikhar Mehrotrah, a member of the executive committee. He also noted that the temple could only thrive if everyone becomes involved.

“This is your temple now,” Mehrotrah said. “To make it successful, we need you. Our mission is to promote our Hindu values and culture. The onus is now on the Hindu community to get things moving forward.”

A number of guests delivered welcoming remarks, including Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler, Dr. David Cohen, Dean of the College of Charleston’s School of Languages, Culture, and World Affairs, and Father Rufus Small of Harvest Center Church.

Deepawali Pooja performed the Goddess of Wealth and all devotees participated in the prayer, which lasted two hours. Sikh prayer was also performed to bless the devotees.

The temple will serve a number of purposes and goals, with the first and foremost to pass on the 5,000 year old culture to the next generations, Dwivedi said.

The Hindu Temple or Mandir is a place of worship where God can be approached and divine knowledge be achieved, Dwivedi explained.

“All aspects of Temple are about enlightenment and liberation and is achieved by its basic principle of alignment, design, decorations and rituals performed,” he said. “As an example, the alignment of Temple is on east west direction conforming to recommendations in Vedas and Shastras (ancient Indian religious books).”

The temple also has a “wall of Gods and Saints which represent beliefs of all communities of India,” he added.

“This Temple brings Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists together to one place of worship, fulfilling our goal of uniting the community in Charleston,” he said. “This temple serves a large diverse section of the Indian community in greater Charleston speaking 13 different languages.”

To that end, the temple will offer a number of free educational opportunities -- such as regional language education and Yoga -- for the children of its members, he said.

Those who attended were clearly very excited and gratified with the establishment of the temple.

"I am very happy that we could establish the first Indian temple here in the Lowcountry area,” noted Leena Karambelkar, who lives in Goose Creek. “Diversity is the soul of India. We have people who speak different languages, have different traditions and have different beliefs.

“The Charleston area has a very interesting blend of various communities. We all learn from each other. There are many people who are interested in knowing more about the Indian traditions and culture. This Temple will provide various opportunities to learn and get involved in the Indian community.”

Karambelkar’s daughter, Nerita, who emceed the children’s cultural presentation, also expressed her appreciation and excitement.

“"Kids can learn more about their heritage, traditions and cultural background here at the Temple,” Nerita said. “I am really looking forward to attending all the events."

THANE: A group of 6,000 persons from various remote parts of Thane district will be brought back to Hindu religion from their present Christianity at a function to be held in Thane tomorrow.

Spokesman of Swami Narendra Maharaj group today told reporters that with this, the goal of bringing back one lakh people to their original Hinduism from Christian community will be completed.

He said that various organisations have helped to identify these hapless people, who were forced to convert into Christianity by several appeasements. "So far, we have already completed conversion of 94,000 Christians into Hindus and one lakh number will be achieved in a two-year period, at the grand function tomorrow.

These people were originally in the Hindu community, but preferred to convert into Christianity as they found the grass green on the other side. Now, they are being brought back to Hinduism on their own without any force or any assurance," he said.

The function will be held with all Hindu rites. He added that for this special process, more than half a dozen pandits have been called and arrived from Ayodya. They are senior Gurus who are Shankaracharyas specially coming down for the purpose.

The 94,000 persons, brought back to Hinduisam, include those in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnatka, and Andhra Pradesh. Of the 94,000, around 40,000 are from Maharashtra, he added.

JAISALMER: In the past four years, some 5,000 Hindus may have crossed over from Pakistan, never to return. It has not been easy abandoning their
homes, sometimes even their families, but they say they had no choice: they had to flee the Taliban.

It started as a trickle in 2006, the year the Thar Express was flagged off. The weekly train starts from Karachi, enters India at Munabao, a border town in Barmer, and runs up to Jodhpur. In the first year, 392 Hindus crossed over.

This grew to 880 in 2007. The next year, the number was 1,240, and this year, till August, over 1,000 have crossed over. They just keep extending their visas and hope to become Indian citizens.

Incidentally, these are official figures. Sources say there are many more who cross over and melt in the local milieu. And officials have a soft corner for these people, most of whom have harrowing stories to tell.

Ranaram, who used to live in the Rahimyar district of Pakistan’s Punjab, says he fell prey to the Taliban. His wife was kidnapped, raped and forcibly converted to Islam. His two daughters were also forcibly converted. Ranaram, too, had to accept Islam for fear of his life. He thought it best to flee with his two daughters; his wife was untraceable.

Dungaram, another migrant, says atrocities against Hindus in Pakistan have increased in the past two years after the ouster of Musharraf. "We won't get permanent jobs unless we convert to Islam."

Hindu Singh Sodha, president of Seemant Lok Sangathan, a group working for the refugees in Barmer and Jaisalmer, says there's unfortunately no proper refugee policy in India even though people from Pakistan reach here in large numbers.

He said in 2004-05, over 135 families were given Indian citizenship but the rest are still living illegally in the country and are often tortured by police because they don't have proper citizenship certificates. "In December 2008, over 200 Hindus were converted to Islam in Mirpur Khas town of Pakistan. But there are several others who want to stick to their religion but there’s no safety for them in Pakistan."

Immigration officer at Munabao railway station, Hetudan Charan, says the arrival of Hindu migrants had suddenly increased as over 15 to 16 families were reaching India every week. “None of them admit they are to settle here but seeing their baggage, we easily understand,’’ he said.

Ravi Kumar, who was Barmer collector till his transfer two days back, said the government in 2007 had given permanent citizenship to a few Pakistani immigrants.

Annadurai told newsmen that he and his supporters were on their way to Katchatheevu to celebrate the festival but police arrested them at the railway station here when they arrived with an idol of Lord Ganesh.

He claimed that Hindu Makkal Katchi activists were taken into preventive custody following their decision to celebrate the festival at Katchatheevu.

The activists are demanding that Katchatheevu, ceded to Sri Lanka by India under a 1974 agreement, be retrieved to ensure the rights of Tamil Nadu fishermen.

Parade to install Hindu statues
Hundreds of people have paraded through the streets of Derby as part of a religious ceremony to install statues at a Hindu temple.

Fourteen marble icons were unveiled at the Geeta Bhawan temple in Pear Tree on Sunday.

Prem Shukla, an executive member at the temple, said he was proud that the building is being used by Hindus from different backgrounds.

He said: "I will be dancing barefoot come rain, snow or whatever."

He added: " It will will be something different like you've never seen in your life.

Hindu temple allegedly occupied by land-grabbers

KARACHI: The caretaker of the seven centuries old Shiva Temple in Gujarat Colony, near Islamia College on Jail Chorangi Road, Jamshed town, has alleged that influential builders have occupied the temple’s land.

Ashok Kumar, the young caretaker of the Shiva Temple, said that, in the past, the temple was spread over two acres of land, which was now occupied by influential builders, leaving just a small piece of land for the temple.

Elderly Baalchand Kangrani, a pundit of the temple said that he shifted to the temple with his family in 1999. “The temple was in a deplorable condition as an angry mob had attacked it in reaction to the demolishing of the Babri Masjid in India by Hindu extremists in 1992,” said Kangrani, adding that the local Hindus donated for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the temple.

The temple’s records reveals that it was built in the late 1930s and the foundation stone on the main gate states that in 1943, a famous jeweler of the city, Seth Shivjibhai Thakursibhai and his son Soni Hirjibhai Shivjibhai JP sponsored a compound wall and the tiles of the temple.

The temple has a vast courtyard which the Hindus use for worship and religious programmes. According to Kumar, the temple committee has approached different ministers for help in reclaiming the temple’s land but even the Hindu ministers refused to help. The caretaker claimed that the builders have occupied the temple’s land with the support of Provincial Minister for Excise and Taxation Mukesh Kumar Chawla’s father and former politician Bhagwandas Chawla.

“In the past, we requested Bhagwandas to help the temple committee so that the temple’s land could be saved. We even gave him the necessary details and documents, however, since then we have not seen him and later heard that an influential builder paid him a heavy sum of money for permission to use the land,” said Kumar.

When this scribe contacted the excise minister to get his version of the story, he rejected the allegation. “It is a false and baseless allegation and if the caretaker can prove the allegations I will personally help obtain the land,” said Chawla.

PANAJI: "Frame a temple protection law", was the demand echoed by nearly 70,000 Hindus gathered at the SAG ground at Campal on Saturday for a
meeting of the Goa Akhil Mandir Suraksha Samitti.

Over 20 bus loads of members of various Hindu organisations descended on SAG ground to hear their leaders condemn the recent series of temple desecrations in the state.

As huge crowds blocked roads that led to the ground, some buses had to be diverted.

The resolution passed at the end of the meeting also demanded that the miscreants who desecrated the temples should be arrested immediately. The leaders also warned artists not to resort to distortion of figures of Hindu gods and goddesses.

The meeting also demanded that the government ban killing of cows all over Goa and that all grants to Haj pilgrims should be stopped. The demands also included reinstatement policemen who were transferred after they arrested persons from a madrassa in Vasco.

The Goa Akhil Mandir Suraksha Samitti also asked for a new law to stop conversions. Shankaracharya Shree Vidyanarmishmabarathi Swami while addressing the crowd said that Hindus should not vote in exchange for money but only support those candidates who are willing to provide Hindus their support.

He said that Hindus will be strong only if they unite and urged the community to cast 100% of their votes.

He also called upon Hindus to follow the age old Hindu vaitik dharma. Shree Acharya Dharamendraji said, "Governments do not work if they are dealt with paper work. They have to be shown muscle power." He said that every Hindu should visit a temple at least once in 24 hours. He further said that Muslims who do not consider India their country should be isolated.

Swami Brahmeshanand of Goa said that Hindus should work towards strengthening temples.

Among the leaders present were Karveer Pithadish Jagatguru Shankaracharya Shree Vidyanarmishmabarathi Swami, Shree Acharya Dharamendraji Maharaj Swami (Jaipur Panchapithadish), Shree Vishweshthirtha (Pejawarpith Udupi) and Shree Bhrameshanand Swami (Tapobhumi pithadish).

Others present at the convention were Vishwa Hindu Parishad international vice-president Ashok Chowgule; Goa Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh head Subhash Velingkar; Hindu JanJagruti convenor Jayesh Thali; Hindu Suraksha Samitti convenor Rajendra Velingkar; Bajrang Dal convenor Vinayak Chari and presidents of other mandir samitis.
