Calcutta, Nov. 24: The detective department today arrested Idris Ali, the All India Minority Forum president who led Wednesday’s road blockades that snowballed into street riots.
An embarrassed Congress, whose minority cell Idris once headed, expelled him, having served him with a suspension notice just a day earlier.
The police have so far not acted against the other political face of the rampage, Trinamul Congress general secretary Sultan Ahmed, who had publicly said his “boys” were among the rioters.
Ahmed himself feared he might be arrested in a day or two. “My name has also appeared in newspapers… so I, too, fear arrest,” he said tonight.
Police commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborti merely said: “Investigation is on. So we cannot reveal who are going to be arrested.”
Idris was returning home from an undisclosed place when the police stopped his car on Ripon Street, where he lives, around 6pm. He was bundled into a police car and whisked away to Lalbazar.
“He has been booked under several non-bailable charges, including rioting, causing hurt with dangerous weapons and damage to public and private property. He has been taken to the Lalbazar central lock-up and will be produced in court tomorrow,” Chakrabarti said.
Officials said a medical test had been carried out on Idris.
The lawyer’s sister Husnara Begum, daughters Rupa and Ruma, and son Imran came to Lalbazar to meet him.
“Some people are saying he was in hiding but that’s not true. He was living at home as usual,” Idris’s brother-in-law Firoz Ali said. The Telegraph had spoken to Idris at his home landline number last night.
The police also arrested three Karaya toughs — Mohammed Salauddin, Mohammed Imtiaz and Mohammed Amir — in connection with Wednesday’s mayhem.
A Sealdah court magistrate, however, granted interim bail to 54 people arrested by Beniapukur and Topsia police on the charges of blocking roads, rioting, looting and damaging private and public vehicles.
The state government did not oppose their bail prayers after it was discovered that these men had been arrested before the rampage broke out in earnest.

He also welcomed the recent reservation announced by the state government for Muslims in education and employment.

However, he criticised the Central government accusing it of not fulfilling its promises on providing reservation to Muslims.
"We are giving the Centre time till January to implement the Sachar committee recommendations. If not, we would resort to agaitations", he said.

HEAVILY armed Indian troops patrolled the streets of Kolkata last night after a day of violence in which rampaging Muslim mobs demanded the expulsion from the city of the controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen.
What started as a protest against the long-serving communist government of West Bengal rapidly turned into a violent clash over Nasreen, who lives in a small apartment in the heart of the city of 15 million.
As a dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed, neighbours said they believed Nasreen had been forced to flee for her life as the mobs took to nearby streets, burning cars and attacking shopfronts with stones.
Trouble started when protesters gathered in the West Bengal capital to accuse Communist Party-backed gangs of killing villagers who led a campaign against state government plans to build a petrochemical plant and shipyard on local farmland.
While violent protests by farmers led to the plan being cancelled in March, violence has persisted.
The state's ruling Communist Party of India is allied to the national Government in New Delhi, but has come under fierce attack over the killings, at Nandigram.
Yesterday, protesters attacked party headquarters as anger against the Government spilled across Kolkata.
The mobs switched their focus to Nasreen's presence, rampaging through neighbourhoods near her home, and demanding her expulsion from India.
Police fired tear gas in a vain attempt to control the mobs before the army was deployed.
Nasreen has been the target of repeated fatwas from Muslim extremists in Bangladesh and elsewhere for her views on women and Islam.
In a recent interview with The Australian, she said she felt secure in the city because locals provided her with protection against the extremists.
She is in India on a temporary residence permit that is normally renewed every six months. But last night New Delhi appeared to be under mounting pressure to remove her from the country.

Kolkata / New Delhi: Central Kolkata on Wednesday literally turned into a battlefield after protests over atrocities in Nandigram and Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen's stay in India snowballed into arson and violence.
Armed with lathis and swords, hundreds of agitators belonging to a minority forum clashed with policemen even as the Army stepped in to take charge of the burning city. Many vehicles, including ambulances and state-run buses were set ablaze and so were local offices of the ruling party CPI-M. More than 150 cars were smashed in the city.
Commuters and schoolchildren were the worst hit in the riots as resultant traffic snarls left a large portion of the city choked.
“I got stranded on the roads for over two hours. I have an exam on Thursday but now I am too tired and scared to study,” a worried student said.
Trouble started when a protest programme organised by the All India Minority Forum (AIMF) to block roads over the issue of Nandigram and stay of Taslima Nasreen turned violent.
Thousands of AIMF members had gathered at crossings on major roads such as Sealdah Railway Station, Park Circus, AJC Bose Road, Ripon Street and CIT Road.
The crowd went out of control when the police tried to intervene and stop the protesters from gathering together. The crowd went on a rampage and started throwing stones and soda water bottles at the policemen. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Jawed Shamim was injured when the police tried to lift the blockade on the arterial AJC Bose Road. A CNN-IBN cameraperson was also hurt in the stone pelting.
"The cause of the protest is Nandigram tension and Taslima Nasreen. Without any provocation, the police started beating the protestors. Both Muslims and non-Muslims are on the streets now," Minority Front President Shehenshah Jehangir told CNN-IBN.
The situation is under control for the moment and curfew will be imposed in the trouble- torn areas like Park Circus, Moulali and Ripon Street from 2200 hours IST to 0600 hours IST on Thursday.
“The police have brought the situation under control and the Rapid Action Force has also been deployed. The state government has conveyed to us that the situation is tense but fully under control,” Home Minister Shivraj Patil said.
The Army presence has helped bring the situation under control. Over 700 armed troops have been called in to conduct flag marches in Kolkata essentially to give out a message of law and order. Each Army column is being accompanied by a local magistrate as the troops are not authorised to use force without a written authorisation by the accompanying magistrate.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya called an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation.
West Bengal Home secretary PR Roy said more than 60 people have been arrested for the violence. "There has been no firing. Only tear gas shells were used and mob was lathicharged," he said.
Police offers Taslima Nasreen to move out of Bengal
West Bengal police on Wednesday made an offer to controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen to move her out of the state following outbreak of large-scale violence in Kolkata during a shutdown called by a Muslim outfit demanding that her visa will be cancelled.
Union Home Ministry sources told PTI that the police has suggested to Nasreen that she could be moved out to Gujarat but the author is believed to have turned down the offer.
The visa of the Bangladeshi writer has been extended by the Government till February 17 next year.

Troops have been deployed in the Indian city of Calcutta after protests over a controversial writer turned into riots.
Police using tear gas and baton charges were unable to control crowds calling for Bangladeshi feminist writer Taslima Nasreen to leave India.
Rioters blocked roads and set cars alight. At least 27 people were hurt. More than 100 arrests have been made.
Crowds were also protesting at recent attacks on Muslims in the Nandigram area in the east of West Bengal state.
A number of people have been killed and thousands left homeless in Nandigram after violence over now-abandoned state plans to industrialise farm land in the area.
Roads blocked
Wednesday's trouble in the state capital began after the predominantly Muslim All-India Minority Forum called for blockades on major roads in the city.

The group said Ms Nasreen had "seriously hurt Muslim sentiments". Many Muslims say her writing ridicules Islam.
Police arrived in strength to disperse the demonstrators.
Violence then broke out in Ripon Street in the north of the city and spread to Park Circus, Moulali and many other areas of central Calcutta.
The BBC's Subir Bhaumik in Calcutta says he saw two army columns, one in Park Circus and one in Moulali.
For most of the day, parts of the city centre were a no-go area, with main roads closed to traffic and commuters stranded.
Children spent hours in buses before they could be returned to the safety of their schools.
"The protesters started pelting policemen with brick bats and acid bottles in several places, so we can say the trouble making was planned and co-ordinated," Calcutta police chief Gautam Chakrabarty said.
Idris Ali, a senior leader of the Minority Forum, blamed the state's ruling Communists for the violence.
"They have infiltrated our ranks and sparked the violence. We wanted to protest peacefully but the Marxists are trying to discredit us," Mr Ali told the BBC.
The Marxists denied the charge.
"We had no idea of their plans, they have planned the trouble, they must take the blame for this mayhem," Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Biman Bose said.
'Red terror'
The All-India Minority Forum says Taslima Nasreen's Indian visa should be revoked and she should be forced to leave the country.
Ms Nasreen faced death threats in her homeland
Critics say she called for the Koran to be changed to give women greater rights, but she vehemently denied making the comments.
Ms Nasreen fled Bangladesh in the early 1990s after death threats and has spent the last three years in Calcutta after a long stay in Europe.
India has not granted her citizenship which she has requested but has granted regular visa extensions.
Minority Forum leaders accuse West Bengal's government of "red terror" in the Nandigram enclave, a troubled cluster of villages to the south-west of Calcutta.
The state government denies it has failed to protect the people of the area from attacks by its supporters.

HYDERABAD, Aug. 11: Leader of the Majlis Ittehadul Musilmeen in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, Mr Akbaruddin Owaisi, has said Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen “should learn to behave herself considering that she is a refugee.”
According to the learned leader, whose legislator colleagues led the attack on the author at a public function here a couple of days ago, Nasreen’s “very existence is controversial and provocative.”
“It is very sad that we are focusing so much of our time and energy on a person who is not even a member of this country. The 20 crore Muslims who love this country are hurt by her presence,” Mr Owaisi claimed in an exclusive interview to The Statesman.
“She is in exile. As a refugee she should know how to behave herself. We have Praveen Tagodia who is spreading poison among the people. On top of that, we don’t need people like her. We have an honourable person like the Dalai Lama who is staying in India for decades. Did he ever hurt anyone? Did he ever utter one controversial statement? What is this special status that Nasreen enjoys where she speaks to hurt and then feels proud of it?” he asked.
Asked if he was denying a writer the right to freedom of expression, he countered: “What is her contribution to literature? She has just become a big name by talking and writing against Islam. She thrives on controversies. Her mere existence is controversial and provocative.” He said when renowned artist MF Hussain made controversial paintings of Hindu goddesses, the MIM condemned it and even brought him before a court of law.
“The Communists condemned those paintings. But now they say that Nasreen is entitled to freedom of expression even though she is not an Indian. Is the same freedom of expression not applicable to Hussain?” he asked. “Freedom of expression is not absolute. It’s subject to reservations. Had it not been so, we would not have had defamation laws. She says The Koran should be rewritten and revised. Would it be palatable should anyone say that The Bible or The Mahabharata should be rewritten and revised?” he asked.

“It is very sad that we are focusing so much of our time and energy on a person who is not even a member of this country. The 20 crore Muslims who love this country are hurt by her presence,” Mr Owaisi claimed in an exclusive interview to The Statesman.
“She is in exile. As a refugee she should know how to behave herself. We have Praveen Tagodia who is spreading poison among the people. On top of that, we don’t need people like her. We have an honourable person like the Dalai Lama who is staying in India for decades. Did he ever hurt anyone? Did he ever utter one controversial statement? What is this special status that Nasreen enjoys where she speaks to hurt and then feels proud of it?” he asked.
Asked if he was denying a writer the right to freedom of expression, he countered: “What is her contribution to literature? She has just become a big name by talking and writing against Islam. She thrives on controversies. Her mere existence is controversial and provocative.” He said when renowned artist MF Hussain made controversial paintings of Hindu goddesses, the MIM condemned it and even brought him before a court of law.
“The Communists condemned those paintings. But now they say that Nasreen is entitled to freedom of expression even though she is not an Indian. Is the same freedom of expression not applicable to Hussain?” he asked. “Freedom of expression is not absolute. It’s subject to reservations. Had it not been so, we would not have had defamation laws. She says The Koran should be rewritten and revised. Would it be palatable should anyone say that The Bible or The Mahabharata should be rewritten and revised?” he asked.

But they said they were also seeking permission to arrest the radical Muslim lawmaker who brought the complaint - for saying Nasreen could be killed after the incident.
The assault on the author erupted during the launch of a translation of one of her novels on Thursday in Hyderabad.
Nasreen backed into a corner as middle-aged lawmakers and members of the radical All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party threw a case, flowers and other objects at her head and threatened her with a chair. Some shouted for her death.
The writer suffered a bruised forehead and described the attack as barbaric before being taken to safety by police.
"Taslima is a controversial personality and her writings have always provoked the religious-minded in Hyderabad and elsewhere and hence we have registered a case for provocative literature," said N. Madhusudan Reddy, a senior police officer in Hyderabad.
City police chief Balwinder Singh said police were yet to decide whether to seek a non-bailable warrant against Nasreen, who is hated by some radical Muslims for saying Islam and other religions oppress women.
Police said they had also approached a court for permission to arrest the state lawmaker who brought the complaint against Nasreen, Akbaruddin Owaisi, for saying Nasreen could be killed if she returned to Hyderabad.
"To arrest him ... we need the court's permission," an official said, referring to the legal privileges of a lawmaker. Owaisi was not present at Thursday's incident but made the comment later.
Nasreen fled Bangladesh for the first time in 1994 when a court said she had "deliberately and maliciously" hurt Muslims' religious feelings with her Bengali-language novel "Lajja", or "Shame". The book is about riots between Muslims and Hindus.
Nasreen now lives in Kolkata.
Supporters of another Muslim organisation, the Dasgah-e-Jehad-Shaheed, held a rally against Nasreen in Hyderabad on Saturday, calling for her to leave India.
The protesters, including several veiled Muslim women, also burnt the author's effigy.

தஸ்லிமாவை தாக்கிய எம்.எல்.ஏக்களையும் தொண்டர்களையும் பாராட்டிய எம்.ஐ.எம் கட்சி தலைவர் சுல்தான் சலாஹூதீன் ஓவாய்ஸி, இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் அடி போட்டிருக்கவேண்டும் என்றும் குறைபட்டுக்கொண்டார்.
இதற்கிடையே இன்னொரு இஸ்லாமிய சகோதரர்களது கட்சி ஒன்று மஜ்லிஸ் பச்சாவோ தேஹ்ரீக் கட்சி, தாங்கள் தஸ்லீமாவை கொல்ல திட்டம் போட்டிருந்தபோது, எம்.ஐ.எம் கட்சி உள்ளே புகுந்து அவரை அடித்ததன் மூலம் போலீஸை கொண்டுவந்து அவரை காப்பாற்றிவிட்டது என்று குற்றம் சாட்டியிருக்கிறது.

The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), whose legislators and cadres attacked Taslima Nasreen here, Friday threatened to behead the Bangladeshi author if ever sets foot in the city again.
MIM leader in the Andhra Pradesh assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi said that anyone who commits blasphemy deserved to be beheaded.
'Muslims are proud of what our legislators and workers have done because we can never tolerate any insult to Prophet Mohammed,' said Akbaruddin, whose party has five legislators in 294-member assembly, told reporters.
'If she comes to the city again we will kill her,' added Muqtada Afasr Khan, one of the three MIM legislators who attacked the writer at a book release function at the Press Club.
Nasreen, who lives in exile in Kolkata following death threats from Muslim extremist groups in Bangladesh, was saved by journalists and organisers of the event who later escorted her to the airport.
The three MIM legislators and 15 others arrested and charged with rioting, trespass, criminal intimidation, causing hurt and unlawful assembly were released on bail late Thursday. A large number of party workers greeted them with garlands.
They also got a pat on their back from MIM president and former MP Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi. 'Our partymen deserved a pat on their back for what they have done. I feel we should have done more.'
Adding a fresh twist, MIM's rivals allege that the party allowed the writer to escape unhurt and sabotaged their plan to kill her. 'It was a sabotage of our plans to kill Taslima,' said Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) leader Majeedullah Khan Farhat.
He claimed that his party activists were waiting outside the Press Club to attack her. 'We did not want to attack her in Press Club as this could have caused harm to innocents,' he said.
The journalists' union has urged Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy to disqualify the three legislators involved in the attack and is seeking stern action against the culprits who also damaged property of the Press Club.
The government has got flak from journalists, writers and women's organisations for not booking attempt to murder cases against the legislators. Home Minister K. Jana Reddy said he would look into the issue.
Jana Reddy said police had no prior information about Taslima's visit. 'Had the organisers informed police about her visit they would have made proper security arrangements.'
Nasreen first went into hiding in 1994, following the publication of her first book 'Lajja', and then fled Bangladesh with support from international human rights organisations like PEN and Amnesty International.
She was given asylum in Sweden. Since then she has lived in Germany, France, the US and later Kolkata in India, where she got a tourist visa though her requests for citizenship have been repeatedly turned down by the Indian government.

The government has got flak from journalists, writers and women's organisations for not booking attempt to murder cases against the legislators. Home Minister K. Jana Reddy said he would look into the issue.
Jana Reddy said police had no prior information about Taslima's visit. 'Had the organisers informed police about her visit they would have made proper security arrangements.'
Nasreen first went into hiding in 1994, following the publication of her first book 'Lajja', and then fled Bangladesh with support from international human rights organisations like PEN and Amnesty International.
She was given asylum in Sweden. Since then she has lived in Germany, France, the US and later Kolkata in India, where she got a tourist visa though her requests for citizenship have been repeatedly turned down by the Indian government.

HYDERABAD, AUGUST 9: Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen was attacked today by MLAs and followers of the Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), a Hyderabad-based Muslim political party, during a book release function in the city.
Led by MIM MLAs Afsar Khan, Ahmed Pasha Quadri and Mozam Khan, the protestors stormed the Press Club, where Taslima had gone to release Chellu ku Chellu, the Telugu version of her controversial book Shodh, and began hurling chairs, flower pots, books and whatever else they could lay their hands on.
Taslima, who received minor injuries, was rescued by mediapersons. Police reached the spot and took the attackers, including the MLAs, into custody.
MIM president Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi defended his party MLAs. “When the Bangladesh government has shunted Taslima out of the country, why is the Indian government protecting her?” he asked.
Akbaruddin Owaisi, MIM’s leader in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, said his party was not worried about the case against its MLAs and activists. “She brought disrespect to Islam and we taught her a lesson,” he said.
The attack began as soon as the function got underway. Taken aback, people present there formed a protective cordon around the writer. Escorted out, she later left for Kolkata.
Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy described the attack as “a barbaric act” and said the attackers would be punished.
