Nun pleads to stealing from Neb. diocese

OMAHA, Neb. -- A Roman Catholic nun accused of stealing from the Omaha Archdiocese and gambling much of the money away has pleaded guilty to theft.

An attorney says Sister Barbara Markey pleaded Monday to theft of more than $1,500. Defense attorney J. William Gallup says she also agreed to pay $125,000 in restitution.

Markey faces up to 20 years in prison when she is sentenced in July.

Markey is an internationally known speaker. She was fired in 2006 as director of the archdiocese's family life office after an audit found irregularities.

The audit found that Markey spent $307,545 for her own use or without documentation. Prosecutors say Markey used the money to cover gambling forays, gifts and trips.

Police in Rwamagana are searching for a catholic nun of the Bernadine Family of Sisters, who is believed to have recently defrauded Banque de Kigali - Rwamagana branch, of Frw13.4 million.

Sr. Maria Mamerita Uwompaye, also formerly working as director of Munyaga Health Centre in Munyaga sector, is said to have approached the branch manager François Manege with a false cheque, obtained from one Robert Mutabaruka, surrendering it as guarantee.

Upon receiving the money, Uwompaye went into hiding, sources said.

But police instead arrested Manege and Mutabaruka pending further investigations. Police has confirmed the duo's arrest.

Police sources said it is believed Uwompaye might have fled the country.

The Acting bank manager, who refused to disclose his names, declined to comment on the matter, referring our reporter to Manege who is currently in prison.

When contacted, Sr. Anonciatha Nyiragumiriza, the head of the Bernadine Family of Sisters in Rwanda, declined to comment.

"I don't talk about such matters on phone. I have discussed the issue concerning Sr. Uwompaye with Police for quite long; they know our stand. If I have any case to answer let whoever is concerned bring me summons. I can't tell you more," she said before hanging up.
