New terror e-mail threatens more attacks across Indian cities
Zeenews Bureau
New Delhi, Nov 30: While the nation is still mourning the victims of Mumbai terror attack, yet another terror mail sent by Deccan Mujahideen to a local Gujarati TV channel has sent a chilling reminder to the security agencies about the destructive motives of the terrorists.
The terror e-mail, sent by Deccan Mujahideen, the same group that claimed responsibility for the Mumbai terror attack, has been traced to an IP address in Saudi Arabia.
The mail threatens of further attacks on Delhi’s international airport, Bombay Stock Exchange, schools and colleges.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up across Gujarat and combing operation is being conducted by the state police.
Security has been tightened in the shopping malls, multiplexes and other public places also. The police is keeping a strong vigilance on the people staying in rented houses as well.
The content in the mail also specifies that the group ‘Deccan Mujahideen’ has no connection with Pakistan and are completely Hyderabad based.

Saudi Arabia: Asian immigrant forced to clean mosques for 'skipping prayers'
Riyadh, 18 Nov. (AKI) - A Saudi civil court has ordered an Asian immigrant to clean mosques next month during this year's Hajj pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca after religious police caught him skipping Friday prayers several times, Saudi daily al-Watan reports. The man will have to clean five mosques along the highway into Mecca twice daily for eleven days, the court ruled.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs will be tasked with checking if the immigrant obeys the court order. If he fails to do so, the court has warned that he will be tried before a criminal court.
Instead of handing out custodial sentences, a number of Saudi judges have recently ordered minor offenders to clean buildings and cars, memorise the Koran (the Muslim holy book) or do community work.
Earlier this month, a judge ordered a young man to memorise part of the Koran and 40 sayings of the Prophet Mohammed as a punishment for appearing in public with a woman who was not a relative.
This year's Hajj is taking place in the first half of December. Last year, two million Muslim pilgrims attended.
The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is an obligation for all able-bodied Muslims to attend at least once during their lives, provided they can afford it.

Islamic Slavery
In the Islamic world, however, the situation is very different. The Muslim prophet Muhammad owned slaves, and like the Bible, the Qur’an takes the existence of slavery for granted, even as it enjoins the freeing of slaves under certain circumstances, such as the breaking of an oath: “Allah will not call you to account for what is futile in your oaths, but He will call you to account for your deliberate oaths: for expiation, feed ten indigent persons, on a scale of the average for the food of your families; or clothe them; or give a slave his freedom” (5:89). Jihad theorist Sayyid Qutb adduces this as evidence that in Islam “there is no difference between a prince and a pauper, a seigneur and a slave.” Nevertheless, while the freeing of a slave or two here and there is encouraged, the institution itself is never questioned. The Qur’an even gives a man permission to have sexual relations with his slave girls as well as with his wives: “The believers must (eventually) win through, those who humble themselves in their prayers; who avoid vain talk; who are active in deeds of charity; who abstain from sex, except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess, for (in their case) they are free from blame” (23:1-6). A Muslim is not to have sexual relations with a woman who is married to someone else—except a slave girl: “And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess. It is a decree of Allah for you” (4:24).
Why should such passages be any more troubling to anyone than passages in the Bible such as Exodus 21:7–11, which gives regulations for selling one’s daughter as a slave? Because in Islam there is no equivalent of the Golden Rule, as articulated by Jesus: “So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; for this is the law and the prophets” (Matt. 7:12). The closest Islamic tradition comes to this is one hadith in which Muhammad says, “None of you will have faith till he likes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself.” The parenthetical “Muslim” in that sentence was added by the Saudi translator, and does not appear in the original Arabic; however, “brother” is generally not used in Islamic tradition to refer to anyone but fellow Muslims. Also mitigating against a universal interpretation of this maxim is the sharp distinction between believers and unbelievers that runs through all of Islam. The Qur’an says that the followers of Muhammad are “ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another” (48:29), and that the unbelievers are the “worst of created beings” (98:6). One may exercise the Golden Rule in relation to a fellow Muslim, but according to the worldview presented by such verses and others like them, the same courtesy is not properly to be extended to unbelievers.
That is one principal reason why the primary source of slaves in the Islamic world has been non-Muslims, whether Jews, Christians, Hindus or pagans. Most slaves in Islam were non-Muslims who had been captured during jihad warfare. The pioneering scholar of the treatment of non-Muslims in Islamic societies, Bat Ye’or, explains the system that developed out of jihad conquest:
The jihad slave system included contingents of both sexes delivered annually in conformity with the treaties of submission by sovereigns who were tributaries of the caliph. When Amr conquered Tripoli (Libya) in 643, he forced the Jewish and Christian Berbers to give their wives and children as slaves to the Arab army as part of their jizya [tax on non-Muslims]. From 652 until its conquest in 1276, Nubia was forced to send an annual contingent of slaves to Cairo. Treaties concluded with the towns of Transoxiana, Sijistan, Armenia, and Fezzan (Maghreb) under the Umayyads and Abbasids stipulated an annual dispatch of slaves from both sexes. However, the main sources for the supply of slaves remained the regular raids on villages within the dar-al-harb [House of War, i.e., non-Islamic regions] and the military expeditions which swept more deeply into the infidel lands, emptying towns and provinces of their inhabitants.
Historian Speros Vryonis observes that “since the beginning of the Arab razzias [raids] into the land of Rum [the Byzantine Empire], human booty had come to constitute a very important portion of the spoils.” The Turks, as they steadily conquered more and more of Anatolia, reduced many of the Greeks and other non-Muslims there to slave status: “They enslaved men, women, and children from all major urban centers and from the countryside where the populations were defenseless.” The Indian historian K. S. Lal states that wherever jihadists conquered a territory, “there developed a system of slavery peculiar to the clime, terrain and populace of the place.” When Muslim armies invaded India, “its people began to be enslaved in droves to be sold in foreign lands or employed in various capacities on menial and not-so-menial jobs within the country.”
Slaves faced pressure to convert to Islam. Patricia Crone, in an analysis of Islamic political theories, notes that after a jihad battle was concluded, “male captives might be killed or enslaved…Dispersed in Muslim households, slaves almost always converted, encouraged or pressurized by their masters, driven by a need to bond with others, or slowly, becoming accustomed to seeing things through Muslim eyes even if they tried to resist.” Thomas Pellow, an Englishman who was enslaved in Morocco for twenty-three years after being captured as a cabin boy on a small English vessel in 1716, was tortured until he accepted Islam. For weeks he was beaten and starved, and finally gave in after his torturer resorted to “burning my flesh off my bones by fire, which the tyrant did, by frequent repetitions, after a most cruel manner.”
Slavery was taken for granted throughout Islamic history, as it was, of course, in the West as well up until relatively recent times. Yet while the European and American slave trade get lavish attention from historians (as well as from mau-mauing reparations advocates and their marks, guilt-ridden contemporary politicians), the Islamic slave trade actually lasted longer and brought suffering to a larger number of people. It is exceedingly ironic that Islam has been presented to American blacks as the egalitarian alternative to the “white man’s slave religion” of Christianity, since Islamic slavery operated on a larger scale than did the Western slave trade, and lasted longer. While historians estimate that the transatlantic slave trade, which operated between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, involved around 10.5 million people, the Islamic slave trade in the Sahara, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean areas began in the seventh century and lasted into the nineteenth, and involved 17 million people.
Also, the pressure to end it moved from Christendom into Islam, not the other way around. There was no Muslim Clarkson, Wilberforce, or Garrison. In fact, when the British government in the nineteenth century adopted the view of Wilberforce and the other abolitionists as its own and thereupon began to put pressure on pro-slavery regimes, the Sultan of Morocco was incredulous precisely because of the audacity of the innovation that the British were proposing: “The traffic in slaves,” he noted, “is a matter on which all sects and nations have agreed from the time of the sons of Adam . . . up to this day.” He said that he was “not aware of its being prohibited by the laws of any sect” and that the very idea that anyone would question its morality was absurd: “no one need ask this question, the same being manifest to both high and low and requires no more demonstration than the light of day.”
However, it was not the unanimity of human practice, but the plain words of the Qur’an and Muhammad that were decisive in stifling abolitionist movements within the Islamic world. Slavery was abolished under Western pressure; the Arab Muslim slave trade in Africa was ended by the force of British arms in the nineteenth century.
There is evidence that slavery still continues beneath the surface in some majority-Muslim countries as well—notably Saudi Arabia, which only abolished slavery in 1962, Yemen and Oman, both of which ended legal slavery in 1970, and Niger, which didn’t abolish slavery until 2004. In Niger, the ban is widely ignored, and as many as one million people remain in bondage. Slaves are bred, often raped, and generally treated like animals.
Some of the evidence that Islamic slavery still goes on consists of a spate of slavery cases involving Muslims in the United States. A Saudi named Homaidan Al-Turki was sentenced in September 2006 to 27 years to life in prison, for keeping a woman as a slave in his home in Colorado. For his part, Al-Turki claimed that he was a victim of anti-Muslim bias. He told the judge: “Your honor, I am not here to apologize, for I cannot apologize for things I did not do and for crimes I did not commit. The state has criminalized these basic Muslim behaviors. Attacking traditional Muslim behaviors was the focal point of the prosecution.” The following month, an Egyptian couple living in Southern California received a fine and prison terms, to be followed by deportation, after pleading guilty to holding a ten-year-old girl as a slave. And in January 2007, an attaché of the Kuwaiti embassy in Washington and his wife were charged with keeping three Christian domestic workers from India in slave-like conditions in al-Saleh’s Virginia home. One of the women remarked: “I believed that I had no choice but to continue working for them even though they beat me and treated me worse than a slave.”
Slavery is still practiced openly today in two Muslim countries, Sudan and Mauritania. In line with historical practice, Muslim slavers in the Sudan primarily enslave non-Muslims, and chiefly Christians. According to the Coalition Against Slavery in Mauritania and Sudan (CASMAS), a human rights and abolitionist movement founded in 1995, “The current Khartoum government wants to bring the non-Muslim Black South in line with Sharia law, laid down and interpreted by conservative Muslim clergy. The Black animist and Christian South remembers many years of slave raids by Arabs from the north and east and resists Muslim religious rule and the perceived economic, cultural, and religious expansion behind it.”
One modern-day Sudanese Christian slave, James Pareng Alier, was kidnapped and enslaved when he was twelve years old. Religion was a major element of his ordeal: “I was forced to learn the Koran and re-baptised Ahmed. They told me that Christianity was a bad religion. After a time we were given military training and they told us we would be sent to fight.” Alier has no idea of his family’s whereabouts. The BBC reported in March 2007 that slave raids “were a common feature of Sudan’s 21-year north-south war, which ended in 2005. . . . According to a study by the Kenya-based Rift Valley Institute, some 11,000 young boys and girls were seized and taken across the internal border—many to the states of South Darfur and West Kordofan. . . . Most were forcibly converted to Islam, given Muslim names and told not to speak their mother tongue.” Yet even today, while non-Muslims were enslaved and often forcibly converted to Islam, their conversion does not lead to their freedom. Mauritanian anti-slavery campaigner Boubacar Messaoud explains that “it’s like having sheep or goats. If a woman is a slave, her descendants are slaves.”
Anti-slavery crusaders like Messaoud have great difficulty working against this attitude, because it is rooted in the Qur’an and Muhammad’s example. Particularly when the slaves are non-Muslims, there is no verse of the Qur’an corresponding to Lincoln’s favored Bible verse, Genesis 3:19, that anti-slavery Muslims can invoke against those who continue to approve of and even to practice slavery.
Most Westerners have not troubled to learn this history, and no one is telling them about it. If they did, the entire slavery guiltmongering industry would collapse. And we can’t let that happen, now, can we?

Robert Spencer is the director of Jihad Watch. He is the author of seven books about jihad and Islamic terrorism, including the New York Times bestsellers The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades) and The Truth About Muhammad.

Mosque fire kills imam’s children
Hayat Al-Ghamdi | Arab News
ABHA: A son and a daughter of Sheikh Ahmed Al-Hawashi, imam and khateeb of Noorain Mosque in Khamis Mushayt, died on Tuesday in a fire that broke out at the imam’s residence that was attached to the mosque.
Al-Hawashi has called for an investigation into the fire that killed his two children — Anas, 2, and Tasneem, 4 — while they were preparing to celebrate Eid and injured a Civil Defense officer and four others.
The imam suspected that the fire was a criminal attack on the mosque. He added that there was a similar attempt seven months ago. He ruled out suggestions that an electricity short-circuit might have caused the fire.
Maj. Muhammad Al-Asimi, spokesman of the Civil Defense in Asir province, said the department’s operations room received information about the fire at 9:30 a.m., adding that seven fire-fighting units had been sent to put out the blaze.
He identified the four injured civilians as two Egyptians, a Bangladeshi and a Saudi.
Al-Asimi said security officers have launched an investigation to determine the reasons that caused the fire that had gutted part of the mosque including the imam’s home, prayer hall for women and its library.
Asir Gov. Prince Faisal bin Khaled yesterday visited the home of Sheikh Al-Hawashi and conveyed his condolences on the death of the imam’s two children. He was accompanied by Maj. Gen. Ali Al-Hazmi, director of police in the region, and other senior officials.

Saudi cleric favours one-eye veil
The two-eyed look remains too seductive for Sheikh Habadan
A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye.
Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive.
The question of how much of her face a woman should cover is a controversial topic in many Muslim societies.
The niqab is more common in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, but women in much of the Muslim Middle East wear a headscarf which covers only their hair.
Sheikh Habadan, an ultra-conservative cleric who is said to have wide influence among religious Saudis, was answering questions on the Muslim satellite channel al-Majd.

SAUDI WOMEN BEAT PEEPING-TOMS AT MOSQUE DURING PRAYERS
(ANSAmed) - DUBAI, 23 SEPTEMBER - A pair of peeping-Toms hoping to get an illicit look at a group of women at a mosque in Saudi Arabia got a beating instead, Alarabiya.net reports today. A group of Saudi women beat two young men who sneaked into a mosque in the northwestern city of Hail to watch women praying during the taraweeh, a nightly prayer recited during Ramadan, the Saudi newspaper al-Riyadh reported on Sunday. A woman noticed that two men had sneaked into the women's section of the mosque and were peaking at the women. She called other women praying in the mosque and they pounced on the intruders. The women beat them with their shoes and water bottles. The women said they did not report the male intruders to the mosqués imam because they did not want to interrupt the prayers. The girls then called security. The two men tried to run away but failed and were interrogated. (ANSAmed).

“Libya and Iran financing Al-Qaeda in Yemen”
The Saudi Gazette Really Knows Better
Hassan Al-Haifi (commonsense@yemen.net.ye)
One cannot help but read with awe the gross misrepresentations of the facts by the Saudi press, as it seeks to whitewash the evil doings of the Saudi religious establishment throughout the world. It is not just by trying to disassociate themselves from all terrorist (and safe to say, absolutely non-Islamic, in deed and in concept) activities.
Like last Thursday's (August 21, 2008) article of the Saudi Gazette (link: www.saudigazette.com.sa/index.cfm?method=home.regcon&contentID=2008082114998), and of course acting under directions from their bosses in the Saudi regime, these paid pens of the Saudi regime wish to convince the reader that anyone to their dislike is the torchbearer of all the evil they have unleashed throughout the world over the last three decades. Thus the Saudi Gazette wishes to mislead the world that the Saudis are as innocent of Al-Qaeda and all its doings as the Prophet Joseph was of the seductress that was infatuated with him and demanded that he relieve her from the fire of temptation that had come to overtake her, because of this infatuation.
The fact of the matter is that the international so called "Islamic" terrorism, which has engulfed the Islamic world and brought havoc to the rest of the non-Islamic world, is as Saudi as the light crude oil that provides the source of financing for the propagation of the Wahhabi misguided rendition of Islam. The fact of the matter is that the Wahhabi Establishment, itself a hereditary clerical order (although Islam forbids the existence of a clergy) under the tight control of the descendants of Mohammed Abdul-Wahhab. This establishment is the mentor and financial backer of all these prominent so called "Salafi" movements. Mohammed Abdul Wahhab presumably concocted the divergent and deviant "Wahhabi" creed of Islam over two hundred years ago. One is puzzled why the followers of this gross misrepresentation of Islam in so many ways do not even like to be called Wahhabis, and try to cloud this association by taking on names that associate them with genuine ideological and seminarian associations (such as "Salafi", Moslem "Brotherhood", "Jihadists", "Fundamentalist"). The answer is obvious, as the Wahhabis are viewed by most mainstream Moslems, even the majority of Sunnis, as unorthodox, bloodthirsty highway robbers, as their early history was drowned with the blood of thousands of fellow Moslems, who were the victims of their lust for loot from pilgrims to Mecca and from those who dare dispute their misguided interpretations of Islam.
You will never see, in their revelations of the history of their movement, the hundreds of raids, especially in the earlier part of the past two and a half centuries, which these bandits inflicted on their brethren of the faith, who they actually labeled as "non-believers" or infidels, which makes their blood and their assets sanctified for them.
One is not here trying to smear the glorious bloody past of the Wahhabi Movement. Not that their past should be ignored, but one can state for certain that intra-sectarian bloody conflict between Moslems is virtually non-existent since the Prophet Mohammed's days until the Wahhabis came into being. Sure there was politically related Moslem bloodshed, but never was this fuelled by how long your beard is, or where you place your hands while standing in prayer and some of the other very secondary issues, in which Moslems might differ, which to the Wahhabis can be ground for war or for repression, if you are living in a Wahhabi regime. There have only been two countries that have succumbed to Wahhabi regimes (Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan under the Taliban), and in both cases it was by the use of repressive force. Ironically, there is a suspicious historical collusion between the Wahhabi movement and the British Crown (see Wahhabi Past), but that is a long story and there are enough sources in the internet and elsewhere that covers it.
The point to be made here is that the Saudis are not at all acting responsibly when they seek to disassociate themselves from an evil they have been rearing now for over two hundred years whether with British support or collusion with Masonic or Zionist forces, as so many historical chroniclers wish to point out on many occasions. The obvious incongruity of the accusation that Al-Qaeda is funded by the Iranians, with whom there is a big rift with the Al-Qaeda from a sectarian point of view is somewhat unbelievable and the same is true with the Libyans. On the latter one cannot help but remember how Washington tried to mislead the world into believing that Saddam Hussein was associated with Al-Qaeda (Actually Saddam had his own means of terror, which was more straightforward and down to earth and discernible than the wishy washy form Saudi Arabia has been nurturing and with which the Saudis could never disclaim any sectarian, ideological and even congenial association, as most of the Al-Qaeda elements that have been killed or arrested are actually Saudi citizens (Yemen has just submitted eight of them to the Saudis last week as well).. So it is not hard to tell, who is the real backer of world terrorism, morally and materially?

8 year old Saudi seeks divorce
AFP Published:Aug 24, 2008
Riyadh - A Saudi court will next month hear a plea for divorce from an eight-year-old girl married off by her father to a man in his fifties, the Arabic-language daily Al-Watan reported.
It said the girl’s mother had filed the divorce case with the court at Unayzah 220 kilometres (135 miles) north of Riyadh, and cited lawyer Abdullah Jtili as saying the father had arranged the marriage without telling the girl.
"She doesn’t know yet that she has been married," added Jtili of the girl who is about to begin her fourth year at primary school.
Al-Watan said relatives of the girl had told a Saudi rights group of her plight and urged it to intervene to have the marriage annulled.
But the daily also reported that the husband had refused to renounce the marriage, saying that he had not done anything illegal.
Arranged marriages involving pre-adolescents are occasionally reported in the Arabian Peninsula, including in the ultra-conservative Saudi kingdom where the strict conservative Wahabi version of Sunni Islam holds sway and polygamy is common.
In Yemen in April, another girl aged eight was granted a divorce after her unemployed father forced her to marry a man of 28.

Premarital Tests Reveal 22 AIDS Cases: Al-Manie
Mohammed Rasooldeen, Arab News
RIYADH, 9 June 2008 — In the run-up to the upcoming marriage season, Health Minister Dr. Hamad Al-Manie yesterday called on prospective couples to undergo obligatory premarital medical tests. He said this while pointing out that 22 AIDS cases have been detected during premarital tests.
“The ministry is greatly concerned with the increasing number of post-marital medical problems faced by people in the Kingdom,” Al-Manie said, adding that the tests have found around 6,700 couples incompatible to marry since 2004.
He also said that the ministry spends SR18 million annually to treat HIV and AIDS patients, adding that this is a heavy slice on its budget.
The ministry last month launched a nationwide awareness campaign entitled “Healthy Marriage” to inform people of the health care facilities provided by the government for those who want to marry.
The ministry has 70 laboratories, 31 marriage consultant clinics and 131 genetic centers across the Kingdom where prospective couples can undergo tests. Four more marriage consultant clinics will be set up in Asir, Madinah, Al-Jouf and Al-Ahsa. Mandatory premarital medical tests, which are essential to issue marriage certificates, include a genetic compatibility test.
The minister pointed out that some of the problems faced by couples were hereditary or due to infection. “People should know the consequences of genetic diseases and the impact those diseases have on their children,” he said.
Around four percent of disabled children in the Kingdom were victims of genetic diseases.
Recent statistics show that the highest number of incompatible couples identified were in the Al-Ahsa region, followed by the Eastern Province, Qunfuda, Jizan, Makkah and Madinah.
Dr. Khaled Al-Zahrani, assistant deputy minister of health for preventive medicine, said that the premarital medical test program is being carried out together with the Ministry of Justice, which has issued a ruling clarifying that the tests are not contrary to the teachings of Islam.
He added that those diagnosed with HIV and AIDS are confidentially treated in the Kingdom, and that the ministry gives them special counseling.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health is in the process of setting up Volunteer Counseling and Testing Centers (VCTCs) to fight the spread of HIV and AIDS. “The centers will be established to advise people on the hazards of the disease and guide them to a clinical inspection whenever necessary,” said Dr. Riyadh Abdul Aziz Al-Khlaif, director of the National AIDS Program.
Although the numbers of HIV and AIDS cases are minimal in the Kingdom, Dr. Al-Khlaif said it is necessary on the part of the government to take preventive measures against the deadly disease. Since 1984, 2,000 Saudis and 8,000 non-Saudis have been found with AIDS in the Kingdom.

SAUDI ARABIA: PACT TO RESPECT ALL RELIGIONS REJECTED
(ANSAmed) - NAPLES, MARCH 20 - A resolution calling for the enactment of an international pact to forbid religions from being defamed or insulted as well as their symbols, leaders and prophets has been voted out by the Saudi Shoura (Consultative Council).
A total of 77 members opposed the recommendation while 33 voted in favour, online newspaper Gulf News reports.
According to the opponents, such a pact would force people to recognise religions, which advocate idol worship, and that "would be unacceptable." The rejected resolution stated that "the Ministry of Foreign Affairs shall work in coordination with Arab and Islamic groups and others at the United Nations to draft an international pact for respecting religions, their symbols and leaders." "This recommendation is creating 'much ado'", said Khaleel Al Khaleel, a member of the Shoura.
The recommendation would create a dangerous precedent that may produce a negative impact on Muslims rather than followers of other religions, he added.
"Some consider Buddhism and Qadianism as religions. Can we make it obligatory for Muslims to respect these faiths and avoid criticising them?," he asked.
Mohammad Al Quwaihes, who presented the resolution, told reporters that he had not expected that his move would be defeated in such a way as the overwhelming majority of members were in favour of introducing the resolution for deliberations. (ANSAmed).

Woman Appeals to Governor for Help in Getting Her Divorce
Hayat Al-Ghamdi, Arab News
ABHA, 19 March 2008 — A woman in her 50s from the southern town of Khamis Mushayt is appealing to the region’s governor to intervene to break off her marriage to a man she says has abused her on numerous occasions.
“I have no option but to seek the mercy of the governor after the Shariah court rejected my plea for divorce from my husband who had been torturing me both mentally and physically,” Um Hassan told Arab News yesterday.
The woman claims the judge told her that her only option was “khula,” a form of divorce initiated by women that requires them to reimburse dowry paid to them by their husbands at the time of marriage.
But Um Hassan says that she has given the best years of her life to her husband and shouldn’t have to pay him anything now that he considers her past her prime.
“I told the judge ‘why should I return the dowry while my husband enjoyed all my youth and now that I am old he throws me away as a worn-out piece of cloth?’ It is my right that he protect me or divorce me honorably,” she said.
Um Hassan is currently living with her elderly mother and her husband has not allowed her to see her two daughters since she ran away from him eight months ago. The judge declined her request to see her girls, saying she’ll just have to wait until they’ve grown up and have been married. Um Hassan has a son, too, but she says he is also abusive.
Um Hassan claims that she fled because her husband would beat her. She claims that one of her daughters threatened suicide because of the domestic abuse erupting around her. When she went to the police, she was told that the police could do nothing because she was a woman coming to them without her mahram — her legal male guardian, who is the same person from whom she was seeking protection.
The police, she said, simply told her she had to go directly to the Board of Investigations and Prosecution, the Saudi equivalent of a district attorney’s office.
Hadi Al-Yami, a legal analyst for the governmental Human Rights Commission in Asir, said the commission could not help her until the system to which she is appealing fails to deliver her rights.
“We can help her only if the regulations are not implemented by the authorities or orders are violated,” he said.
Al-Yami said that under Saudi law a woman must complain within three days of the abuse for the case to be valid. He also said that she doesn’t have automatic custody rights because her girls are above seven. In custody disputes, Saudi family law heavily favors fathers once children are over seven years old.
Regarding the unwillingness by the police to help, Al-Yami told Arab News that the cops could not assist with women’s complaints without the women being accompanied by their official male guardian. And in the case where the problem arises with the guardian, the woman must go to higher ups to seek reprieve, which could involve a Shariah court taking custody of her, even in the case of a woman in her 50s.

Top Saudi cleric calls for liberal writers' death
Sat Mar 15, 2008 8:22am EDT
RIYADH, March 15 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's most revered cleric said in a rare fatwa this week that two writers should be tried for apostasy and put to death if they do not repent.
Sheikh Abdul-Rahman al-Barrak was responding to recent articles in al-Riyadh newspaper that questioned the mainstream Sunni Muslim view that adherents of other faiths should be considered unbelievers.
"Anyone who claims this has refuted Islam and should be tried in order to take it back. If not, he should be killed as an apostate from the religion of Islam," said the fatwa, or religious opinion, dated March 14 and published on Barrak's Web site (albarrak.islamlight.net).
"It is disgraceful that articles containing this kind of apostasy should be published in some papers of Saudi Arabia, the land of the two holy shrines," he said, referring to Muslim holy places in Mecca and Medina.
"The rulers should hold these papers to account ... and all those who took part in the publication should know they were involved in the sin of heretical articles." Barrak, who is thought to be around 75, is the leading authority of Saudi Arabia's hardline version of Sunni Islam, often termed Wahhabism.
He said the articles suggested Muslims were free to follow other religions. Rights groups have accused Wahhabism of a xenophobic attitude which demonises other religions.
The two writers, Abdullah bin Bejad al-Otaibi and Yousef Aba al-Khail, were not immediately available for comment.
Saudi Arabia regularly executes drug traffickers, rapists and murderers, but calls for people to be put to death for opinions expressed in public are rare.
Liberal reformers are engaged in a battle with religious hardliners over the direction of the country, a key U.S. ally and the world's biggest oil exporter.
Diplomats say powerful clerics allied to some key members of the Saudi royal family have prevented the government under King Abdullah from moving forward with social and political reforms. (Reporting by Andrew Hammond, editing by Tim Pearce)

Saudi ‘Tribal Codes’ Draw Mixed Response
Ali Al-Zahrani, Arab News
RIYADH, 7 March 2008 — Increasingly, young Saudis are using three-digit numeric codes to indicate their tribal affiliations. Among the codes used by them to identify the tribes they originate from are 511, 505, 502, 707, 711, 501 and 111.
The code is aimed at others who know how the numbers translate.
The numbers indicate the number-bearer’s tribe and, by implication, where his loyalty lies.
These numbers are showing up in school, cars and in graffiti. Some, like Saad Al-Otaibi, an high school student who has seen taunting among students of different tribes, told Arab News such numbers could have a negative impact.
“Sometimes the codes put on notebooks generate arguments and fights in classrooms as pupils take pride in their tribe and make fun of other tribes,” said Al-Otaibi.
“Even though the legitimacy of tribal loyalty as a solid social alliance is unquestionable, the pride has reached an extent where certain people look down on others,” said Muhammad Makdari, an Arabic-language teacher.
Muhammad Al-Zulfa, a member of the Shoura (Consultative) Council, denounced the trend, saying the purpose behind them was not conducive to promoting unity in the Kingdom. “This is a dangerous phenomenon,” he said. “That is why we need to create awareness to unify ourselves under a symbol, which is our leader, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah.”
Others say that the numbers amount to little more than harmless pride in family names, much like allegiance to a sports team.
“The code has a special place in my heart,” said Muhammad Al-Qahtani, an intermediate school student. “It represents strength and loyalty to my tribe.”
Some students claim that the trend started in the Eastern Province when locals distinguished others by their areas of residence inside public housing complexes in Al-Jubail Industrial area. Saudis from a certain tribe would be often found in a certain area with a three-digit code similar to a zip code in the US. The location code then evolved into a code for particular tribes.
“I really do not know where these codes came from. I only learned of it now when I saw the codes glued to the windows of my big brother’s car,” said Al-Qahtani.

Divorces Get on Fast Track With E-Communication
Arab News
RIYADH, 2 March 2008 — Living in a high-tech world, many husbands have opted for new ways of divorcing their wives rather than confronting problems head on through discussion and dialogue.
Jawhara, a divorcee, said that she received a message on her mobile phone from her husband that read, “Pack your things and go to your family before I return, you’re divorced.”
Jawhara promptly telephoned her brother, asking him to pick her up. He, however, asked her to wait for her husband and ask him why he had divorced her. “I stayed and when he came he repeated what he said. I told him that I was off to my family and that he should keep his children,” she said.
A week later, Jawhara’s husband said he wanted to get back together and that he had made a mistake. “It took me time to accept but I did in the end after he admitted to a judge that he had made a mistake,” she said.
Munira Asaad was faced with a similar situation when her husband asked her, through an SMS message, to take their children and leave home. “At first I thought it was a joke. But when he came home he hit me and asked me to leave. I refused to leave the house saying it was mine and my children’s,” said Munira, adding that instead her husband left. A week later he returned and said he wanted to get back together.
“I refused. He made this decision based on wrong information, which he got from his sister-in-law. His actions show that he doesn’t trust me. Why should I take him back?” she said.
Suad woke up one morning to find a text message reading, “I divorce you. Go back to your family.” Suad was left shocked and could not believe what she saw. “There was no problem between us. I called him but he did not answer,” she said.
When her husband returned from his trip, he told her that he divorced her because one of his friends had not accepted an invitation to dinner. He had sworn that he would divorce his wife if his friend did not accept his invitation.
Suad said she went to her room, packed her stuff and left. “I asked my children to come with me. After two weeks he came back and urged me to return. He told me that he hadn’t registered the divorce in court,” said Saud, adding that she agreed to go back after her husband promised to be careful with such issues.
Commenting on the issue, Ahmed Al-Muhaimid, a lawyer, said in a report carried by the Al-Riyadh newspaper that text-message divorces take effect even if a husband does not verbally pronounce his intention. He added that such divorces take place even without the women knowing about it.
He urged couples to be careful while dealing with such a serious issue as divorce. He called on officials to question the conditions for such divorces, the causes and the real intentions who do them.
Al-Muhaimid also said that it was important to ensure messages are actually sent by husband and not by third parties.

Saudi Prince Mohammad Al Abdallah Al Faisal called today, in an interview with Turki El Dakheil, famous host for the popular Saudi Arabian (Arabiya channel) TV talk show Eda’at (Enlightment), for “changing the education philosophy in Saudi Arabia”. Adding “our curriculum produces terrorists”.
Prince Al Faisal was the deputy Minister for education until he resigned in 1983.
“Education in Saudi Arabia suffers from a big problem. One day I went to the Minister of education Hassan El Sheikh, and told him, ‘The religious books we teach are the books of Sheikh Mohamed Ben Abdel Wahab (the founder of - Wahabism) and we should change their interpretations and understanding for the student ” he told Al Dakheil.
He continued, “I am not happy with the level and results of education in the Kingdom, and I personally sent my children after their middle school to study abroad .. Since we realized from experience that our curriculums produced terrorists who went and blew themselves up .. we have to find out how to get our students out of that path”.

Starbucks leads to strip-search for Saudi woman

RIYADH -- Saudi Arabia's religious police detained and strip-searched a woman for sitting in a Starbucks coffeeshop with a male work colleague who is not a member of her family, Arab News reported on Tuesday.
The 40-year-old financial consultant, named only as Yara, told the paper she was arrested on Monday by members of the powerful Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.
She was holding a business meeting with the man in a branch of Starbucks in Riyadh, in a section reserved for families as is the rule in Saudi Arabia where unrelated members of the opposite sex are segregated in public, she said.
Yara said she was taken to a Riyadh prison, strip-searched and forced to sign a confession to having been caught alone with a unrelated man -- an illegal act in the kingdom which enforces a strict Islamic moral code.
"I had no other choice" but to sign, said the married mother of three. "I was scared for my life... I was afraid that they would abuse me or do something to me."
She said the religious police, known as the Muttawa, released her several hours later after her husband, Hatim, intervened. "I look at this as if she had been kidnapped by thugs," said Hatim.
The paper said the man with whom Yara had coffee, an unnamed Syrian financial analyst, was also arrested and remains in custody.
Saudi Arabia's 5,000-strong religious police have been investigated over a number of deaths that occurred while they raided homes or kept people in custody.
The interior ministry issued a decree in May 2006 aimed at reining in the Muttawa by requiring them not to interrogate detained suspects, as they had previously done, but to hand them over to the regular police instead.
A United Nations report released on Friday said that women in the conservative Muslim state are the victims of systematic and pervasive discrimination across all aspects of social life.

Imam Sends Death Threats to Official
Raid Qusti, Arab News
RIYADH, 31 December 2007 — The Kingdom’s Cassation Court (appeals court) will hear the case of a Saudi imam who was jailed by a court in Hail. The imam allegedly threatened to kill the head of the branch of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Hail. The head had suspended the imam from his duties for using anti-Western slogans in his sermons.
The ministry asked the imam several times to refrain from using political slogans but the imam was adamant and refused to obey. He was then summoned to the ministry and removed from his position.
After a quarrel with a ministry official and the failure by others to mediate and have the imam reinstated in his job, the imam sent death threats to the official on his cell phone. The official then filed a lawsuit against the imam at the religious court in Hail.
A reliable source reported that the imam “kept arguing with the judge that it was legitimate in Islam to pray against the governments of certain Western countries.” The source continued: “When the judge asked him whether he was the sender of the death threats, he confessed and did not deny it.” The judge then sentenced the imam to seven months in prison and 150 lashes.
The Cassation Court will either uphold the Hail court’s ruling or ask for a retrial.
Sheikh Abdullah Al-Hammad, head of the branch of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Hail, the receiver of the death threats, said the ministry was firm on monitoring the performance of imams. “Among the large numbers of imams here, you will find some who do not follow guidelines,” he told Arab News.
He said the ministry monitored the performance of imams through committees which submit reports. “If and when an imam is seen to have indulged in any wrongdoing, he is summoned by the ministry. If the mistake is unintentional, he is warned and resumes his job. But if the wrongdoing is intentional, he is punished according to the level of the violation,” Al-Hammad said.
He said punishment was gradual and could lead to the imam’s being removed from his job if he continued to disregard ministry guidelines.
Earlier this month, Interior Minister Prince Naif said that some mosques in the Kingdom were being used to send messages which violated their main purpose. The prince also said that some imams and khateebs (preachers) were not doing enough to discourage militancy among Saudi youth, including discouraging young Saudis from going to Iraq to fight alongside insurgents.
In June, Prince Naif held a meeting with imams and khateebs from all over the country and sought their support in fighting the ideology that had been used to recruit Saudi youth to Al-Qaeda. Asked if he felt there had been any progress since that meeting, the minister said: “No, not at the level I would have hoped for.”
Last year the Ministry of Islamic Affairs announced that 270 officials had been hired to monitor the performance of imams and khateebs. In addition, the ministry said some 203 technical teams regularly check architectural aspects of mosques. The report said there were 58,110 mosques in the Kingdom including 11,806 where Friday prayers are held.

Free Fouad al Farhan
A Saudi blogger, Fouad al Farhan, has been arrested by the government for questioning. You can access his blog, in Arabic, here.
It seems that Mr. Al Farhan, a citizen of the happy kingdom, was not as happy as his last name (which means "the happy one" in Arabic) indicates. Hence, his arrest.

Blogger who dared to expose Saudi corruption is arrested

Published: 03 January 2008
Fouad al-Farhan knew they were coming for him. A few days before Saudi security forces swooped on his offices, he sent a letter to friends telling them he was a wanted man. "They will pick me up any time in the next two weeks," he predicted.
His crime? Writing one of the most widely read blogs in Saudi Arabia.
Mr Farhan, 32, who describes his online mission as "searching for freedom, dignity, justice, equality, public participation and other lost Islamic values", had already broken ground by refusing to hide behind a pen-name as he vented his spleen about the rampant corruption blighting political life. Now he has clocked up another first – the first blogger to be arrested in the kingdom.
The blogger was picked up on 10 December from the offices of his computer company in Jeddah, but it was not until this week that the interior ministry finally confirmed his arrest.
Blogging has seen something of a boom in Saudi Arabia, allowing dissident voices a space in a society were the media is kept on a tight leash and where political parties and public gatherings are banned. There are an estimated 600 bloggers in Saudi Arabia, male and female, conservative and liberal, writing in English and Arabic.
The arrest of Mr Farhan has sent shock waves around internet users in Saudi Arabia. "Although we have seen bloggers in Bahrain, Kuwait and Egypt arrested and jailed, I thought this wouldn't happen here," said Ahmed Al-Omran, 23, a student in Riyadh who blogs under the name Saudi Jeans.
He added: "Saudi Arabia doesn't usually jail journalists (they ban them, but they don't throw them in jail), and I thought those arresting citizens who exercise their right of free speech would be wise enough to choose their battles."
The Saudi interior ministry said Mr Farhan was being held for "interrogation for violating non-security regulations" and declined all further comment. But in the letter he wrote before he was detained, Mr Farhan offers some more specifics: "The issue that caused all of this is because I wrote about the political prisoners here in Saudi Arabia and they think I'm running a online campaign promoting their issue."
A group of 10 academics were arrested by the authorities last February. They were accused of supporting terrorism but have yet to be charged. Their campaigners say that the terrorism story is a charade and the men are being punished for their political activism.
Mr Farhan said he had been asked to issue an apology. "I'm not sure if I'm ready to do that," he said. "An apology for what? Apologising because I said the government is [a] liar when it accused those guys of supporting terrorism?"
His decision to stick to his guns may have cost him his liberty. The Committee to Protect Journalists described his arrest as deplorable. "Detaining writers and holding them for weeks without charge is appalling," said its director, Joel Simon. "We call on Saudi authorities to release him at once."
Until that happens, Mr Farhan will be hoping that people pay attention to the closing words of his pre-arrest letter: "I don't want to be forgotten in jail."
