A WOMAN who tried to smuggle drugs with a street value of more than £18,000 into a Leeds prison in her knickers has been jailed for four years.
Atia Ashraf, 24, of Trinity Mount, Blackburn, Lancashire, was stopped by police in Armley Prison in April on her way to visit an inmate.
Ashraf, who was described in court as well-educated and a strict Muslim, had already passed through one set ofADVERTISEMENTprison checks when she was subjected to a second search by West Yorkshire Police officers.
A jury at Leeds Crown Court heard last month how they found 13.2 grammes of heroin, 6.63 grammes of crack cocaine and 0.5 grammes of cannabis with an estimated street value of £18,200.
The drugs were found in a sausage-shaped package hidden in the elastic of her pants.
During her trial, Ashraf claimed she thought the packet was a mobile phone.
Her barrister, Amanda Johnson, said she had been led on by one of the inmates, known as Naz.
Sentencing Ashraf in a brief hearing, Judge Alistair McCallum said four years was the least possible sentence he could give her "in order to dissuade other people minded to do what you tried to do".
Ashraf had been found guilty by a jury last month of two counts of possession of class A drugs with intent to supply and one of possession of class C drugs with intent to supply.
The court was told that she had no previous convictions apart from in relation to driving offences.

TWO women have told a court that they were sexually abused by a teacher at a mosque when they were children.
The pair – now both 19 – claimed they were regularly attacked by Mahmood Qadri at Edinburgh's Polwarth Mosque while learning the Koran.
One of them alleged she was indecently assaulted "every day" she was in Qadri's company.
The 60-year-old, a prisoner at Saughton, is on trial accused of abusing one woman, referred to as Miss X, between January 1, 1995 and September 30, 1998.
He is also charged with abusing another, Miss Y, between January 16, 1997 and September 30, 1998.
Miss X told the High Court in Glasgow that Qadri attacked her in a bedroom at the mosque. She denied lying about him, although she did admit that when she told a teacher at her school about the alleged abuse, she initially claimed to have been raped.
Miss Y later claimed she was also abused in the bedroom.

A link between terrorism plots and hardcore child pornography is becoming clear after a string of police raids in Britain and across the Continent, an investigation by The Times has discovered. Images of child abuse have been found during Scotland Yard antiterrorism swoops and in big inquiries in Italy and Spain.
Secret coded messages are being embedded into child pornographic images, and paedophile websites are being exploited as a secure way of passing information between terrorists.
British security services are also aware of the trend and believe that it requires further investigation to improve understanding of terrorists’ methods and mindsets. Concerns within the Metropolitan Police led to a plan to run a pilot research project exploring the nature of the link. One source familiar with the proposal said that this could eventually lead to the training of child welfare experts to identify signs of terrorist involvement as they monitor pornographic sites.
Concerns have already been expressed at Cabinet minister level about the risk of vulnerable Muslim youths being exploited by older men.

Officers have noted that child sex abuse images have been found during investigations into some of the most advanced suspected plots. However, it is understood that the proposed research project was never implemented because the AntiTerrorism Branch was overwhelmed by the sheer number of cases it was having to deal with.
It is not clear whether the terrorists were more interested in the material for personal gratification or were drawn to child porn networks as a secure means of sending messages. In one case fewer than a dozen images were found; in another, 40,000.
British security sources confirmed that such a link had been discovered in several cases. They noted the contradiction between people supposedly devoted to theocracy and Islamic fundamentalism and their use of child pornography. “It shows that these people are very confused,” a source said. “Here they are hating Western decadence but actually making use of it and finding that they enjoy this stuff.”
Baroness Neville-Jones, Conservative security spokeswoman and former chairwoman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, said: “The information about a possible link between extremism and child pornography potentially provides useful insight into three things: the methods that extremists use to communicate; the methods they use to target vulnerable people in society; and the techniques they seek to use to conceal their online activities.” She added: “There is no doubt that these possible linkages should merit further research.”
Andrew Dismore, the Labour MP and chairman of the parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights, said: “This is an important development. We have to do more than just the police work. It needs child protection, criminological and psychological work. It could become a very important weapon in the fight against terrorism.” He urged researchers to review cases where terrorists had been convicted to look for this link.
The first British suspicions of a link between child sex abuse and jihadis emerged in London in 2006 when antiterrorism police in two unrelated investigations were shocked to find computerised images of hardcore child pornography. The key case that tipped off the security services to a plausible link involved the “White-chapel Rapist”, Abdul Makim Khalisadar. A former Mujahidin and a preacher at the East London Mosque, he was being examined for his links to a hardcore Islamic militant who was later convicted of terrorism. Khalisadar was never convicted of terrorist offences. The other investigation involved a young religiously observant Muslim.
The Times has learnt that a criminal investigation also found child pornography on computers after a raid in 2001 at a mosque run by an al-Qaeda recruiter in Milan. Italian police believe that the images were encoded with messages. At a forthcoming terrorism trial in Spain, the alleged mastermind of a Muslim cell has also been accused of downloading hundreds of child sex abuse pictures and videos.
Meanwhile, police uncovered a right-wing terrorist plot when they raided a home after being tipped off about pornographic images. This June, the Nazi sympathiser Martyn Gilleard was jailed for 16 years after being found guilty of terrorism. Police found 39,000 indecent images of children at his flat in Yorkshire.
Invisible ink for the internet age
— Messages may be concealed within digital images and audio, video or other files. The method is called steganography, derived from the Greek for “covered writing”
— Although the average person will not be able to detect the hidden messages by either listening to or viewing a file, the intended recipients can use applications to reverse the steganography process and gain access to the information
— Experts say that the advancement in encryption technology is outpacing the authorities’ abilities to monitor suspected terrorists and paedophiles
— Italian authorities uncovered files of child abuse images that had been manipulated by a terrorist cell after a raid on the Via Quaranta mosque in Milan in November 2001. Investigators claimed that the terrorist cell encoded the images before sending them to each other

LONDON (AP) — Two doctors charged with trying to bomb a Glasgow airport and London's West End will be portrayed by prosecutors as terrorists in thrall to a fundamental form of Islam, a jury in London heard Wednesday.
Justice Colin Mackay also instructed jurors to set aside their prejudices and prepare for "an interesting case."
Bilal Abdulla, 29, and Mohammed Asha, 28, have been in jail awaiting trial since the abortive June 2007 attacks. The Iraqi-raised Abdulla and Asha, a Jordanian, had worked in British hospitals since 2004.
Two poorly designed car bombs abandoned outside West End night spots on June 29, 2007, failed to detonate. They were discovered only accidentally — one when paramedics spotted it emitting smoke, the other after it had been towed away by traffic enforcement officials. Police said both contained drums of fuel, packs of nails, timers and detonators.
The following day, an attempted suicide car-bomb attack on Glasgow International Airport caused only one death — that of attacker Kafeel Ahmed, who suffered lethal burns while trying to ignite a propane-based bomb on board his vehicle.
Indian-born Ahmed was the alleged driver of the sports-utility vehicle that rammed into security barriers outside the airport, while Abdulla was the alleged passenger. Police suspect that Abdulla and Ahmed also delivered the West End car bombs.
Asha was arrested hours after the Glasgow attack while driving with his wife on an English highway, and police subsequently identified him as a likely ringleader based on cell-phone and other electronic records.
Abdulla and Asha face identical charges of conspiring to commit murder and cause explosions from January 2006 to July 2007. Both deny the charges.
Asha's father and brother, who live in Amman, Jordan, have rejected police descriptions of him as a Muslim extremist, and insist he was a political and religious moderate hoping to pursue a career in Britain as a neurosurgeon.
But Mackay told jurors at Woolwich Crown Court in southeast London that prosecutors would characterize Abdulla and Asha as "terrorists motivated by their belief in a fundamental form of Islam." The prosecutors' opening statement is scheduled for Thursday.
The judge warned the jury to reach its verdict "based solely on the evidence it hears as it is given in this court, and not based on any prejudices, beliefs or personal opinions." He predicted that the jurors "will find it an interesting case to try."
The case is expected to run for eight to 10 weeks.
So far, only one person — Ahmed's younger brother Sabeel, also a doctor practicing in Britain — has been convicted in relation to the June 2007 threats. He served half of an 18-month sentence after pleading guilty to concealing information about the attacks and was deported to India in April.
During his trial, Sabeel Ahmed admitted that he received an e-mail from his brother but claimed he did not see it until the day after his brother had suffered horrific burns at the airport terminal.
"This is the project that I was working on for some time now. Everything else was a lie," Kafeel Ahmed's e-mail read. "It's about time that we give up our lives and our families for the sake of Islam to please Allah."

Muslim prison gangs are trying to force other inmates to sign up to Islamic radicalism, prison officers said.
Extremists at high security HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire were pushing a "strict and extreme" interpretation of Islamic practice, inspectors were told.
Chief Inspector of Prisons Anne Owers said: "There was a perception among officers that some Muslim prisoners operated as a gang and put pressures on non-Muslim prisoners to convert, and on other Muslim prisoners to conform to a strict and extreme interpretation of Islamic practice.
She found staff were reluctant to tackle "inappropriate behaviour" and was told Muslim prisoners were able to "police themselves".
She was told: "The new gang are the Muslims. The Muslim group is a big group and others are looking for protection.
"Those who are isolated are looking for protection and so are the ones converting as they won't get help from screws."
Earlier this week an EU-commissioned report warned urgent action was required to stop brainwashing by jailed extremists.
Dr Peter Neumann from King's College London said governments across Europe should observe prisons more closely in the future as they were likely to become "major hubs" for terrorist recruitment.
He suggested creating "jihadist prisons" in which to isolate Islamist militants.
Phil Wheatley, Director General of the National Offender Management Service, said: "The Chief Inspector is right to highlight the challenges and risks Whitemoor is facing. It is also important to recognise the action being taken to manage challenging prisoner profiles.
"A more sophisticated approach to addressing bullying and the management of bullies and their victims is now in place and is bringing improvements.
"Work to improve the relationships between staff and prisoners is a priority and measures have been implemented to tackle this, including training to develop staff understanding of the growing Muslim population."

The crisis over child sex abuse in the Roman Catholic Church has cost the organisation both in terms of levels of public trust and compensation payouts.
When American bishops decided in 2002 to conduct an audit of the scale of the problem, their initiative was given a cautious welcome by survivors of sexual abuse.
But one part of the church was not part of the audit.
Nuns, officially known as "women religious", do not always fall under the authority of their local bishop.
This meant they stood outside the remit of the study, even though there are documented cases where Catholic nuns have committed child sexual abuse.
'Resistance'
In Portland, Oregon, there are six new lawsuits against the Catholic Church. Two are in relation to accusations made against nuns.

Kelly Clark is a lawyer who specialises in sexual abuse cases in the state.
He said: "I have more resistance these days from religious orders involving nuns, more denial, than I have from any archdiocese or any religious order involving priests."
He says that nuns are 10 to 15 years behind the rest of the church in their attitude to dealing with accusations of abuse.
One campaigner who agrees is Steve Theisen. He was abused over a three-year period by a nun who was a teacher at his school.
His view is: "I don't think they've even taken a first step on this."
Mr Theisen now runs a network for those who have been abused by Catholic leaders.
His research has uncovered more than 60 cases of abuse committed by nuns.
No audit
The Leadership Conference for Women Religious is the umbrella group for women's religious orders in the US.
Its executive director, Sister Carole Shinnick, says that her members have worked hard to make sure there are proper policies in place to ensure the protection of children.
But she admits that, unlike the steps taken by bishops to establish the scale of the abuse problem among priests, no audit has been carried out to determine how many nuns have abused children.
"We haven't done an audit... but the fact of the matter is it isn't something we've been asked to do," she said.
And knowing the scale of the problem does not necessarily lead to a solution.
Transparency
The bishops in the US have now adopted a "zero tolerance" strategy to sexual abuse, which means that priests found to have acted inappropriately must leave the church.
In Silver Spring, Maryland, the St Luke Institute exists to help priests and nuns with psychological problems, including sexual disorders.
The institute was once a major centre for the treatment of priests who had been found guilty of sexually abusing children.
But as a result of the zero tolerance policy, such priests no longer tend to receive treatment within the church - they are simply expelled from the priesthood.
As the director of the centre, the Rev Stephen Rossetti, explains: "Once we throw them out of the priesthood we no longer have a supervisory role - they're gone from our structure.
"They can still be members of the church but they're unsupervised... but where do they go?"
Few would suggest that the scale of the sex abuse problem among nuns will ever reach the rate seen among abusive priests.
But the lessons for the church - about the value of transparency - are the same, and victims of abuse by nuns believe the church has a long way to go to reassure them.

Three charged in Islamic novel attack

Cops have charged three Muslim men who petrol bombed the home and office of publishers about to print a book about the Prophet Muhammad.
Ali Beheshti, 40, Abrar Mirza, 22 and Abbas Taj, 30, will appear at Westminster Magistrates' today accused of conspiring without lawful excuse to damage the premises... intending to destroy or damage property and with intent to endanger life and conspiring without lawful excuse to damage the premises... intending to destroy or damage property and being reckless as to whether the life of another would thereby be endangered.
Mr Beheshti was also charged with possessing a weapon designed or adapted for the discharge of a noxious liquid or gas.
Anti terror police on alert
The Saturday morning attack of the publisher Gibson Square in Islington has resulted anti-terror police stepping up its efforts to prevent any further incidents.
Gibson was to release The Jewel of Medina this month - they have since cancelled the publication, a victory for the small minded perpetrators who attacked freedom of speech.
The book by American author Sherry Jones followed the story of Muhammad and his child bride was cancelled in the US in August by publisher Random House who feared this sort of reaction.
British Muslim reaction
The Ramadan Foundation has condemned the "violence and terrorism" on Saturday and called on peaceful protest of the book but were "disgusted at this novel."
Mr. Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Foundation commented that:
“...attacking the central figures of Islam under the guise of freedom of speech is patronising and the world sees their attempt to belittle our faith."
“I also strongly condemn the thugs that used terrorism against the publishing house; they do not represent Islam or Muslims and violence in any form cannot be justified and we urge the Publishers to withdraw publication.”
Satanic Verses
The attack was a hark back to the violent protests that greeted Salmand Rushdie’s 1988 book, the Satanic Verses.
Then Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Supreme Leader of Iran issued a fatwa calling on all good Muslims to kill Rushdie and his publishers, or to point him out to those who can kill him if they cannot themselves.
Following the fatwa, Rushdie was put under police protection by the British government. Despite a conciliatory statement by Iran in 1998, and Rushdie's declaration that he would stop living in hiding, the Iranian state news agency reported in 2006 that the fatwa will remain in place permanently since fatwa’s can only be rescinded by the person who first issued them and Ayatollah Khomeini is no longer alive.
As of early 2008 he has not been physically harmed, but others connected with the book have suffered violent attacks. Hitoshi Igarashi, the Japanese language translator of the book, was stabbed to death on July 11, 1991; Ettore Capriolo, the Italian language translator, was seriously injured in a stabbing the same month; William Nygaard, the publisher in Norway, barely survived an attempted assassination in Oslo in October 1993, and Aziz Nesin, the Turkish language translator, was the intended target in the events that led to the Sivas massacre, which resulted in the deaths of 37 people.

It had taken months for the Rev Yvonne Hobson to feel secure enough to return to her beloved church in the picturesque Cornish parish of Paul. She had stayed away from it after falling victim to a vicious hate-letter campaign, which culminated with arson attacks on her home and car.
Nothing that happened early on14 September suggested her torment would begin again. She arrived at St Pol de Leon church and helped to oversee holy communion, which passed off as normal. But, as she began to clean the church in readiness for parish communion later that morning, a new chapter in her ordeal began. As she picked up a small Bible, placed in front of her favourite seat in church's stalls, a small, folded postcard fell out. A short message to her was scrawled on it and gave clear instructions, "Leave the church or your life will be in danger".
Although she closed the card before helping to oversee the communion, Mrs Hobson has not been seen by her congregation since the message was found. She is again staying away from the church and considering whether she can continue under such intimidation.
The new threat against Mrs Hobson has come as a shock to the close-knit community near Penzance. Everyone in the parish had thought the campaign against their reverend, seemingly from someone with a vendetta against female priests, would finally disappear.
"We had all hoped the threats and attacks would stop, so this new message has come as a real shock," said John George, a regular worshipper at St Pol de Leon. "We can only hope the message had lain undiscovered in the Bible for a long time and was part of a previous vendetta against her. It would be awful for Yvonne and the church for the attacks on her to start again.
"Ours is a happy and popular church, and it is sad that these events have made the church make the headlines for the wrong reasons."
Mrs Hobson, 54, arrived in Paul as its curate in 2006. She received her calling to the Church late in life, completing a theology degree at Exeter University before being ordained in 2003. Problems did not start straight away. In fact, the new curate had almost a year of happiness in the parish.
It was when she began to take sermons in the summer of 2007, after the the parish vicar, the Rev Gordon Hansford, retired that the vendetta against her began. Poison-pen notes began to arrive at the church. They also appeared at the vicarage and at Mrs Hobson's home in Penzance, which she shares with her husband, Donald.
One letter was placed in a private church room which was left unlocked. Mrs Hobson was given a particular fright when she stumbled upon the letter, realising that the perpetrator had crept in to leave it.
The contents of the messages were at times confused, but they seemed to express sentiments against the ordination of women priests. One was so vicious that it prompted the Bishop of Truro to make a plea for help from the pulpit of St Pol de Leon.
For a while, his intervention seemed to have worked – the letters stopped appearing and everyone began to hope the cloud that was hanging over theirvillage would finally be lifted. But then, in November, the campaign against Mrs Hobson became more serious. Two symbolic arson attacks were carried out on her home and car.
First, a candle was left to burn in a basket of logs in her front porch last November. Firefighters had to put it out before too much damage was caused to the £350,000 property. The window of her Mercedes was also forced open and a burning candle dropped inside, while Mrs Hobson was in the church taking choir practice.
For Mrs Hobson, the escalation of the attacks against her was more than she could bear. She stepped down from her church duties in December to recover, and the letters and attacks stopped. After months away from the church, she slowly began to take a role at St Pol de Leon again in June, with the arrival of a new and very supportive vicar, the Rev Tim Heaney. But the latest death threat has rekindled fears that the campaign against her may resurface. The community has rallied around the curate, who has always refused to talk about threats made against her. The Bishop of St Germans, The Rt Rev Roy Screech, has also offered his support.
Despite the concerted campaign of intimidation against Mrs Hobson, now spanning more than a year, police are not close to tracking down the person, or persons, behind it. Some in the community believe the culprit must come from outside the area. "I cannot believe it is anyone in the church's congregation or the wider Paul community," said one villager. It has also upset Mr Heaney, who had seen Mrs Hobson's role in his church increase since the summer. "It was something we hoped was behind us. It is a baffling attack," he said.
"The community has clubbed together with what has happened here. While we are all of course upset for Yvonne, we are determined that the actions of this person will not stop us from carrying on the church's good name and work here. We believe in a loving God and whatever one's thoughts about how we should run his church, he would never condone actions like this. It is a point I repeat in my sermons."
A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "An item described as a postcard, which had a threatening message on it, fell out of a Bible when Reverend Hobson picked it up.
"The message has been sent for forensic examination. We are currently investigating the threat but have no named subjects at this point."
Members of the congregation said the new vicar had been offering prayers for Mrs Hobson, as well as for the person responsible for the vendetta against her.
"We must all remember that whoever is doing this may need help in some way – we have to be sure to see it in every possible light," said John George. "That's why we pray for him, too."

Pervert priest jailed for six years

A priest who sexually abused a number of boys at a Catholic school over the course of 20 years has been jailed.
William Green, aged 67, of Cale Lane, Aspull, pleaded guilty to 27 counts of historic sexual abuse when he appeared at Manchester Crown Square Court on Friday, August 15.
Today he was jailed for six years.
Green was a teacher at St Bedes College in Alexandra Park, Manchester, from 1973 to 1991. He abused seven victims aged between nine and 16-years-old during the 1970s and early 1980s.
Some of the counts refer to abuse that took place at St Margaret Mary's Primary School in New Moston in the 1960s where Green worked as a physical education teacher.
Greater Manchester Police were first contacted in late 2007 by a victim who had been abused by Green during the 1970s.
Further inquiries by the force's Public Protection Investigation Unit revealed other victims.
On each occasion, he would make excuses to see them alone in either his room or the church dormitory where he indecently assaulted them.
In 1991, Green left St Bedes and took up a priesthood at the Holy Family Roman Church in Wigan, and Greater Manchester Police would like to stress that there is no evidence of any abuse while Green was in this post.
The investigation has been carried out with the full support and co-operation of the Salford Diocese Child Protection Commission, St Bedes College and Manchester City Council.
Superintendent Nadeem Butt, from Greater Manchester Police, said: "Thanks to the courage of the victims who were prepared to come forward after years of living with the knowledge they had been abused, we have been able to bring Green to justice.
"This investigation has never been about the institutions where Green worked, and I would like to praise St Bedes, the church and Manchester City Council for their openness and the way they have helped us throughout our inquiries.
"No one can be held responsible for the actions of Green but Green himself, and the support we were given has been greatly appreciated.
"This verdict should act as a warning to those who commit these dreadful acts. It does not matter how long ago they took place, we will investigate all reports of historic sexual abuse very seriously and if found guilty offenders face harsh punishments.
"In Green's case, a significant jail sentence was the only option given the level of abuse he committed over such a sustained period of time.
"He repeatedly abused his position of trust and indecently assaulted a number of young boys, leaving them with emotional scars they will carry for the rest of their lives.
"I hope today's sentence gives them some peace of mind and they can carry on with their lives."

A Catholic priest who sexually abused seven girls 30 years ago and was finally caught when two of the victims swapped memories of him on the Friends Reunited website was jailed for a year yesterday.
Peter Carr, 73, sponged stage paint on to the naked bodies of girls taking part in plays at a school where he taught in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
He was brought to justice when two women now in their 40s, one a solicitor, the other a singer, met on Friends Reunited and talked of their experiences.
They complained to police, who found that other girls had also been abused by Carr, who taught at a school in Gloucestershire.
Jailing Carr at Gloucester crown court, Judge Martin Picton told him that he had left his victims feeling "degraded and humiliated" and had done the church "much damage".
Carr, of Battersea, south London, was convicted of 10 counts of indecent assault on the seven girls. He was involved in the production of two plays, Sinbad the Sailor and Tom Thumb, at the boys' school.
The girls, who were from another school, were invited to take part in the plays and Carr told them they needed to wear full body makeup. He smeared paint over their naked bodies, helped clean it off afterwards and told them not to tell anyone.
One of the victims who chatted about the abuse on the website, and is now a 49-year-old singer, said Carr had become a "monster in her mind". She said: "When my marriage broke up, I went to counselling and she told me that it was all down to this. I thought about going to the police in my 20s but I thought because it was just me, that no one would believe me."
The woman said he applied the make-up with a sponge and used his hands to smooth it around her stomach, chest and back. "He bathed me and told me not to enjoy it, because you shouldn't enjoy things like that," she added.
Ian Dixey, prosecuting, said the girls had been "torn between desire to take part in productions which they enjoyed and the discomfort of having to be totally naked before a strange man."
After reports of the case appeared last week three other women had come forward making identical complaints, Dixey added, but no further charges would follow.
Noel Lucas, defending, said Carr was ashamed. But he added: "The plays were a huge success. The girls loved being in the plays and returned year on year. They inspired many of them in later life."
Picton paid tribute to the courage of the women who came forward.
He told Carr: "What you did to your victims all those years ago was very wrong. I hope it is of some comfort to your victims that you at last have had to admit that you abused and humiliated these children out of a sexual motive.
"The shows should have been the high points of their childhoods but the pleasure is for ever tainted by the abuse they suffered at your hands."

The women realised that the priest had made them both strip off their clothes before applying body paint with a sponge to intimate areas of their bodies. Afterwards he had helped to wash it off and told them not to say anything to their friends or families.
The women, one a lawyer and the other a professional singer, reported Carr to his Catholic order, the Salesians. It began an inquiry that led to five other victims coming forward.
Carr was convicted of eight charges of indecent assault against six women after a trial in December that could not be reported until now. Yesterday he pleaded guilty to two further charges against a seventh victim. Carr, from Battersea, southwest London, will be sentenced on October 2.
Gloucester Crown Court heard that pupils were molested at the Salesian School in Blaisdon, Gloucestershire, in 1969 and 1970. The women were 11 and 12 at the time. One woman said Carr’s actions had led to the breakdown of her marriage years later.
Ian Dixie, prosecuting, said: “They were at a Catholic school and priests were viewed as God’s messengers on Earth. You did not question something you were asked to do by a priest.”
He said the women had established contact on Friends Reunited: “One of the first subjects that came up was Father Peter Carr. Both of them felt he had behaved very wrongly towards them.” Carr told the jury he never had sexual motives when he applied the make-up and washed it off afterwards.

THOUSANDS of Hindus are expected at the fourth Ganapati Visarjan ceremony being staged on Shoebury’s East Beach.
Saturday’s ceremony marks Ananta Chaturdashi, the birthday of the Hindu god of fortune, Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed god.
His birthday is one of Hinduism’s most sacred events and is India’s largest public celebration.
John Lamb, Southend councillor responsible for enterprise, tourism and regeneration, said: “I am delighted to welcome our Hindu guests to Southend.
“Southend’s Hindu community has pulled out all the stops to make sure it will be as vibrant as any of the festivals held in India.”
Organised by the Shree Jalaram Seva Trust, the celebration is thought to be the largest outside India.
Up to 4,000 people will be dressed in brightly coloured clothes and take part in traditional dancing.
Members of the trust will play drums and other instruments while a prayer tent will provide some space for anyone who wishes to pray or join in with religious chanting.
The free festival starts at 11am and lasts until around 4.30pm, but many idols, including one portraying Lord Ganesh, will be dipped in the sea at high tide, expected at 6pm.
The festival is open to people of all faiths, and families are particularly welcome.

The Krishna-Avanti primary in Harrow, north London, is already heavily over-subscribed.
It will have its own temple, vegetarian catering facilities, and lessons in Sanskrit and yoga.
The school - opening for reception pupils on September 15 - was originally aimed at strictly-vegetarian families, but it provoked claims that it would rule out most of the estimated 15,000 Hindu children living in the borough. The requirement was later ditched, with admissions now being devolved to local temples.
The opening is expected to be the first of many following a Government recommendation that more faith schools should be created where local demand exists.
At the moment, there are 4,621 Anglican schools in England, 2,027 Roman Catholic schools and 26 Methodist schools. A further 38 are classed as Jewish, nine are Muslim and three Sikh.
In total, around a third of all Government-funded schools in England are linked to religious groups.
Critics claim the move risks dividing communities along faith and racial lines.
This week, Accord, a new coalition of secular groups and religious leaders, was formed to lobby the Government to strip schools of the power to select pupils on the basis of faith alone.
But Nitesh Gor, chairman of the new Hindu school's governing body, said: "If we are going to continue to have faith schooling in this country it is unreasonable and discriminatory to deny just a handful of Hindu parents the choice that is already available to much larger numbers of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and others.
Faith schools have an excellent record of providing high-quality education and outperforming comparable non-faith schools."

The trusted manager of a Muslim community centre has been locked up after he stole more than £16,000 and “frittered it away” on cars, drink and nights out with his friends.
Sajid Karim was employed by Sandwell Council to run Tipton Muslim Community Centre, in Wellington Road, from 2001 to 2006.
The 33-year-old, who was jailed for nine months at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday, was in charge of the centre’s accounts and cheque book. The court heard how the father of three was responsible for managing the finances of groups that used the centre and entrusted to pass the payments on to the council.
Miss Rhiannon Jones, prosecuting, said Karim received two cheques from Bangladeshi Women’s Association in March 2004 and instead of passing them on to the council, paid them into the centre’s account, which he later raided. Between June 2004 and January 2005, Karim, of Wilson Street, Tipton, stole a total of £16,850.
His theft was uncovered following a review of the accounts in 2006 and he was dismissed from his post.
Miss Jones said: “He said he would pay the money back and had £6,000 to give but nearly two years later he hasn’t repaid any money. He said he spent it on cars, drinking and going out with friends.”
Karim, who is married and has three children aged under 10, pleaded guilty to theft at Warley Magistrates Court on August 4.
Mr Jas Mann, defending, said his client had previously worked as a waiter and was thrust into the role of manager untrained as he was a well-known volunteer and his father was a respected trustee at the local mosque.
Mr Mann said: “For a significant period of time, he was a good servant. Now he is doomed to work in modestly-paid jobs.
“The money was squandered and frittered away, the suggestion of repayment was a pipe dream. The trust has been eroded in his family and he is ashamed.”
Karim is now working for Parcel Line, Mr Mann added.
Judge John Warner described the crime as a “gross and repeated breach of trust”.
“This was deliberate dishonesty and you were not subject to financial pressures, you can’t have that as any sort of excuse,” he said.
“This was simply dishonest greed and you took advantage of the people that put trust in you.”

A Shia Muslim was convicted of child cruelty yesterday after he forced two boys to flog themselves during a religious ritual.
Syed Mustafa Zaidi, a warehouse supervisor, told the boys, aged 13 and 15, to beat themselves with a zanjeer zani, a wooden-handled implement containing five curved blades used when commemorating the death of Hussain, grandson of Muhammad and one of the most important figures in Shia Islam. Zaidi is due to be sentenced on September 24.
Manchester crown court heard how Zaidi, 44, flagellated himself at an event held in January in Manchester until his back was bloody and cut. Others at the event also flogged themselves. Some of those present, fearing Zaidi would seriously harm himself, asked him to calm down. Zaidi agreed, only to turn his attention to the two boys.
The 14-year-old, who was 13 at the time, told the jury that neither he nor the other boy wanted to injure themselves. He said Zaidi was insistent with the older boy, "pulling him and pushing him, 'keep doing it', telling people 'this is a sad moment and look, he's not doing it'.
"He goes, 'I don't want to do it, I don't want to do it'. He kept pressuring him, make him do the knife thing, pulling him, trying to get his T-shirt off, pulling and pushing him. He was saying, 'just do it, just do it'." He said the 15-year-old "swung it once or twice and said 'I don't want to do it any more'." The older boy was then pulled away by another man.
After the ceremony, the boys went home to their mother, who noticed several deep wounds on their backs and multiple slash wounds. She took them to Manchester Royal infirmary and the matter was reported to the police.
The boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted they wanted to beat themselves, but not under duress and not using Zaidi's zanjeer zani. They also said they had flogged themselves with a smaller zanjeer zani from the age of six in Pakistan.
Carol Jackson, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said the prosecution was not an attack upon the practices or ceremonies of Shia Muslims, adding that the prosecution relied partly on evidence given by the president of the local Shia community centre. It was the first case of its kind to be prosecuted by the CPS.
For Shia Muslims the death of Hussain is a period of intense mourning, leading some to beat and whip themselves. The practice is not compulsory and some Shia authorities prohibit it, while others say it should be done only if certain conditions are met.
Safdar Zia, general secretary of the Jaffria Islamic Centre, said Shia Muslims in Manchester would now try to work with the police and the CPS towards a code of practice: "We are not above the law."

A Shia Muslim was convicted of child cruelty yesterday after he forced two boys to flog themselves during a religious ritual.
Syed Mustafa Zaidi, a warehouse supervisor, told the boys, aged 13 and 15, to beat themselves with a zanjeer zani, a wooden-handled implement containing five curved blades used when commemorating the death of Hussain, grandson of Muhammad and one of the most important figures in Shia Islam. Zaidi is due to be sentenced on September 24.
Manchester crown court heard how Zaidi, 44, flagellated himself at an event held in January in Manchester until his back was bloody and cut. Others at the event also flogged themselves. Some of those present, fearing Zaidi would seriously harm himself, asked him to calm down. Zaidi agreed, only to turn his attention to the two boys.
The 14-year-old, who was 13 at the time, told the jury that neither he nor the other boy wanted to injure themselves. He said Zaidi was insistent with the older boy, "pulling him and pushing him, 'keep doing it', telling people 'this is a sad moment and look, he's not doing it'.
"He goes, 'I don't want to do it, I don't want to do it'. He kept pressuring him, make him do the knife thing, pulling him, trying to get his T-shirt off, pulling and pushing him. He was saying, 'just do it, just do it'." He said the 15-year-old "swung it once or twice and said 'I don't want to do it any more'." The older boy was then pulled away by another man.
After the ceremony, the boys went home to their mother, who noticed several deep wounds on their backs and multiple slash wounds. She took them to Manchester Royal infirmary and the matter was reported to the police.
The boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted they wanted to beat themselves, but not under duress and not using Zaidi's zanjeer zani. They also said they had flogged themselves with a smaller zanjeer zani from the age of six in Pakistan.
Carol Jackson, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said the prosecution was not an attack upon the practices or ceremonies of Shia Muslims, adding that the prosecution relied partly on evidence given by the president of the local Shia community centre. It was the first case of its kind to be prosecuted by the CPS.
For Shia Muslims the death of Hussain is a period of intense mourning, leading some to beat and whip themselves. The practice is not compulsory and some Shia authorities prohibit it, while others say it should be done only if certain conditions are met.
Safdar Zia, general secretary of the Jaffria Islamic Centre, said Shia Muslims in Manchester would now try to work with the police and the CPS towards a code of practice: "We are not above the law."

THE News of the World has smashed an evil gang working inside MOSQUES to sell fake passports to potential terrorists.
The cocky crooks were convinced they were untouchable, knowing police raids could inflame racial tension.
But after our three-month undercover investigation the gangsters haven’t a prayer. Acting on our damning evidence, cops this week shut the scam down.
Earlier we watched a Bangladeshi Mr Big’s team of fixers tout for business, offering genuine Bulgarian passports doctored with fake IDs for £2,500 a time among devout worshippers the East London Mosque in Whitechapel.
Across the city at the Central Mosque in Regent’s Park another crew of henchman was peddling the same service.
When we met the gang boss face to face, posing as zealots on the run from the police, he was unfazed and bragged he had helped more than 50 illegals into the UK, adding:
“These are genuine documents. Nobody can challenge you. Just give me your photographs and choose a name, in four weeks you’ll have a new identity.
“Because Bulgaria’s in the European community you have full rights in this country. You can live here legally, take advantage of the free NHS, everything. And no one can stop you travelling.”
We launched our covert operation when a whistleblower from the East London mosque contacted us. Mr Big had tried to recruit the man to his dodgy sales team.
Beneath the mosque’s landmark gold dome and minarets our bearded source told us quietly: “The boss offered me £100 commission for every customer.
“He said it’s easy to find buyers—especially on Fridays at the main Jumma prayers when the mosque is packed.He then handed me a passport and asked me to deliver to a Bangladeshi who’s here illegally.
“I was so furious I came straight to the News of the World. Not only is it against our religion to commit fraud, these documents could be used by extremists.”
The passport he had was issued in the Bulgarian capital Sofia and numbered 33849711.
The photo and signature were covered with tamper- proof plastic embedded with official logos and holograms.
We tracked down Mr Big through one of his touts. By phone our investigator spun him the yarn that he was an Islamic extremist seeking travel documents for a cell of Muslim radicals trying to evade capture by the law.
The 29-year-old boss was still happy to do business and said: “I can help. We can make as many passports as you want.”
He arranged to meet us at the Nagina cafe just minutes from his home in Ilford, on the London/Essex border. He arrived in a flash BMW with personal number plate and listened calmly as our man again claimed to be a wanted terrorist.
Unconcerned, Mr Big tucked into kebabs and samosas as he told us: “These are 100 per cent genuine passports. I know a Bulgarian who has a connection in the Home Office over there. That’s how I get them. I charge £2,500 but as you will want more I can do them for £2,000 a piece.”
At a second meeting the crook eagerly took our order, carefully counted our £600 deposit, shoved it in his pocket and cynically murmured: “Allah will help us.” As he swaggered off he vowed: “Just wait for my call. Everything will be sorted.”
And it was. After our tip-off police raided Mr Big’s home at dawn on Wednesday and arrested him. In another swoop on a flat in Benfleet, Essex, a second man was detained.
Cops found images of underage children on a computer, along with binoculars on a window sill overlooking a junior school.
A man appeared before magistrates on Wednesday, charged with with making false identity documents. He was remanded in custody to await trial. Another man, arrested on suspicion of child porn offences, was released on police bail.

Three months after Dispatches: Undercover Mosque won a police apology and libel damages, Channel 4 has announced it is returning to the subject in Undercover Mosque: The Return.
Earlier this year West Midlands police and the Crown Prosecution Service paid out a six-figure sum to Channel 4 and Undercover Mosque Hardcash, the independent producer responsible for the documentary, after falsely accusing the programme of misleading viewers.
The documentary, an undercover investigation into extremism in mainstream British mosques, featured preachers calling for homosexuals to be killed, espousing male supremacy, condemning non-Muslims and predicting jihad.
Last August, West Midlands police referred the critically acclaimed programme to media regulator Ofcom and, in conjunction with the CPS, issued a statement saying the words of three preachers featured had been "heavily edited" so their meaning was "completely distorted".
However, Ofcom cleared Channel 4 and Hardcash of any TV fakery and ruled they "dealt with the subject matter responsibly and in context".
The two companies subsequently launched their libel action.
It has now emerged that the same Hardcash production team have revisited the subject to "see whether extremist beliefs continue to be promoted in certain key British Muslim institutions".
In the new documentary, a female reporter attends prayer meetings at an important British mosque which claims to be dedicated to moderation and "dialogue with other faiths".
According to Channel 4, "she secretly films sermons given to the women-only congregation in which female preachers recite extremist and intolerant beliefs".
In one scene, as hundreds of women and some children come to pray, a preacher calls for adulterers, homosexuals, women who act like men and Muslim converts to other faiths to be killed, saying: "Kill him, kill him. You have to kill him, you understand. This is Islam."
Channel 4 also said that in the same mosque, "the reporter visits the bookshop and discovers books and DVDs still on sale, promoting extremist, anti-Semitic, misogynistic and intolerant messages".
The undercover reporter also "films inside a key Saudi-funded Muslim organisation, which claims to promote tolerance and integration yet distributes literature which promotes intolerance for non-Muslims, an extreme version of sharia law and teachings which support discrimination against women".
In addition, Undercover Mosque: The Return also "investigates the role of the Saudi Arabian religious establishment in spreading a hard-line, fundamentalist Islamic ideology in the UK - the very ideology the government claims to be tackling".
A former Foreign Office minister tells Dispatches he thinks the government should take a stronger line on the issue.
The film also includes interviews with Islamic academics who condemn messages of intolerance and segregation and warn of the impact they will have on British society.
Dispatches: Undercover Mosque: The Return will air on Channel 4 on September 1 at 8pm.

A GIRL of 15 was tricked into a "telephone marriage" ceremony to a Sheffield man with a mental age of five in a ceremony recognised by sharia (Islamic law).
When the girl arrived from Pakistan expecting to meet the handsome man she had been shown in a photograph, she found that he was 40 years old, unemployed and disabled.
To make matters worse, her mother-in-law decided to exploit her attractive looks by forcing her into prostitution.
The family invited men to the family home to rape her before she managed to escape to the police by bolting through the front door. She was taken into care and now lives in a refuge.
The case is highlighted in a report by the Centre for Social Cohesion, which has found that policemen, councillors and taxi drivers are turning a blind eye or even conniving in enforcing the Asian community's strict "moral code" on young women.
The girl's marriage last April was not recognised by the Home Office but was approved by the Islamic Sharia Council in Britain. She is typical of the runaway brides at risk of an "honour killing". According to official figures, 10 to 12 women are murdered in Britain in honour killings each year, but the government has been warned by MPs that this is a serious underestimate. Police often record the deaths as cases of domestic violence, while other girls are driven to suicide or taken away to their family's country of origin and never seen again. Many Asian parents would rather resort to violence against their children than see their reputation tarnished by the perceived dishonour of allowing them to become "westernised".
The report, Crimes of the Community, claims the problem is no longer an issue of first-generation migrants importing attitudes from "back home" but is "indigenous and self-perpetuating" because it is sustained by third and fourth-generation immigrants.
The study reveals the case of Saamiya, a 16-year-old girl from Birmingham, whose parents were so angry when they discovered she had a boyfriend that they flew her to Pakistan and told her they had arranged a marriage two hours before the ceremony.
"During the Islamic ceremony my dad was standing behind me with one hand on my shoulder and with his other hand he had a gun which was pointed at my back so that I didn't say 'no'," Saamiya said.
"To everyone else it looked natural — he was just standing there stroking my shoulder — but just before he had told me that he would shoot me if I didn't go through with it."
She was rescued from Pakistan by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's forced marriage unit and now lives in a refuge in the Midlands, but has been told that she will be murdered by her brothers. The girl told investigators: "I haven't been back home since then. My brothers say that they want to take me back to Pakistan so they can kill me basically. They'll just pay the police there to keep quiet... I don't want to be killed. I'm only 16. I want to live my life."
The think-tank's report comes after Gordon Brown, the prime minister, said last week that he was extremely concerned that too little was being done to prevent honour crimes.
The study criticises the police and schools for failing to take action in a misguided attempt to avoid offending cultural sensibilities.
Karma Nirvana, a support group in Derby, claims it asked local schools last year to display warning posters produced by the forced marriage unit. It said the schools refused.
Derby council last week denied that the group had made the requests, but the prime minister has pledged to investigate reports that the government unit cannot get its advice posters into schools for fear of upsetting local opinion.
According to the report, women who go to the authorities to seek protection have been tracked down through their mobile phones or even by leaks of confidential information from government databases.
Jasvinder Sanghera, director of Karma Nirvana, said that police who find girls who have escaped from their families often simply return them to their parents where they face further abuse, with some Asian officers actually colluding in crimes. Sanghera is taking a case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission of a girl who fled her family but was kidnapped by relatives and held prisoner. She claims that a police officer tipped off the family where the girl was staying.
"Police have a long way to go before they get on top of honour crime. There is a lingering fear among officers of being dubbed racist for probing cultural issues. We've got to shake off that myth," she said.

"During the Islamic ceremony my dad was standing behind me with one hand on my shoulder and with his other hand he had a gun which was pointed at my back so that I didn't say 'no'," Saamiya said.
"To everyone else it looked natural — he was just standing there stroking my shoulder — but just before he had told me that he would shoot me if I didn't go through with it."
She was rescued from Pakistan by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's forced marriage unit and now lives in a refuge in the Midlands, but has been told that she will be murdered by her brothers. The girl told investigators: "I haven't been back home since then. My brothers say that they want to take me back to Pakistan so they can kill me basically. They'll just pay the police there to keep quiet... I don't want to be killed. I'm only 16. I want to live my life."
The think-tank's report comes after Gordon Brown, the prime minister, said last week that he was extremely concerned that too little was being done to prevent honour crimes.
The study criticises the police and schools for failing to take action in a misguided attempt to avoid offending cultural sensibilities.
Karma Nirvana, a support group in Derby, claims it asked local schools last year to display warning posters produced by the forced marriage unit. It said the schools refused.
Derby council last week denied that the group had made the requests, but the prime minister has pledged to investigate reports that the government unit cannot get its advice posters into schools for fear of upsetting local opinion.
According to the report, women who go to the authorities to seek protection have been tracked down through their mobile phones or even by leaks of confidential information from government databases.
Jasvinder Sanghera, director of Karma Nirvana, said that police who find girls who have escaped from their families often simply return them to their parents where they face further abuse, with some Asian officers actually colluding in crimes. Sanghera is taking a case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission of a girl who fled her family but was kidnapped by relatives and held prisoner. She claims that a police officer tipped off the family where the girl was staying.
"Police have a long way to go before they get on top of honour crime. There is a lingering fear among officers of being dubbed racist for probing cultural issues. We've got to shake off that myth," she said.

London, 5. Dec. (AKI/Asian Age) - A Hindu temple has been voted as the most popular attraction in London and is a place that makes Londoners feel most proud, according to an online poll.
The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, also known as the Neasden temple, in Brent was voted pick of the poll in London and nationwide.
Nine local authorities across London took part in the Pride of Place poll by inviting visitors to click and vote for one of 10 locally nominated top spots on their websites. In all, 36,800 people went online to vote for their favourite place in this first national council-led poll.
The temple, run by Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, is the first traditional Hindu mandir to be constructed in Europe. It has been constructed from 2,000 tonnes of Italian marble and 3,000 tonnes of Bulgarian limestone.
A spokesman for the temple board of trustees said: "We are delighted that the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir has won the UK Pride of Place Award."
"When His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader who inspired the mandir, consecrated it in August 1995, he envisaged it as not only a place of worship for Hindus, but as a place of learning, spirituality and peace for all people. This award is a tribute to all the residents of this wonderful borough."
In the London vote, Firepower - the visitor attraction at the Royal Artillery Museum in Greenwich - and the Horniman Museum at Forest Hill in Lewisham, came in close second and third spots behind the Neasden Temple.
The most popular attractions in London, according to the online poll, are: 1. Neasden Temple (BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir), Brent.
2. Firepower Museum, Greenwich.
3. Barking Abbey, Barking & Dagenham.
4. Forest Hill and the Horniman Museum, Lewisham.

AN Imam who beat an 11-year-old boy with a mop handle for talking during a lesson at a mosque has been convicted of assault.
Religious leader Guhlam Mustapha Hazarvi, 42, dragged the frightened boy into the corner of a classroom and beat him.
The boy suffered `horrific' bruising following the assault at the Newton Street mosque, off Penny Meadow, Ashton-under-Lyne.
Forty children go to the mosque every evening from 4.30pm to 6.30pm to study the Koran.
During a lesson in May, the boy's friend leant over and asked him to help with a word he couldn't understand. The innocent chatter sent Hazarvi into a rage.
Jon Savage, prosecuting, said: "He took exception and grabbed the boy by the collar, dragging him into the corner. He hit him with the stick several times.
"After the lesson, the boy went home and kept quiet but his brother confessed to their father what had happened.
Severe bruising
"The boy showed him the bruising. It was so severe, the youngster even found it uncomfortable to sit down."
The boy's father was so upset he took him round to confront the Imam. Hazarvi showed no remorse and told him he had `disciplined' and `punished' the boy for speaking in class.
The following morning, the boy's father spoke to staff at his son's primary school in Ashton. Teachers were so horrified by the injuries they took photographs and urged him to contact police.
Concerned about the impact on his community, the boy's father wrestled with his conscience until June 2 when he finally contacted detectives.
Three days later, police arrested the Imam at his home in St Albans Avenue, Ashton under Lyne. He was taken in for questioning and later charged.
Hazarvi admitted assault causing actual bodily harm at Bolton Crown Court.
Married with four children, Hazarvi arrived in Britain seven years ago. The highly-educated imam can reportedly recite the Koran word for word.
In mitigation Saul Brody said: "He is a well respected community leader who has made a positive contribution to the Muslim community.
"He accepts, and feels keenly, the shame he's brought upon himself.
Frustration
"It was an unpleasant incident, committed out of frustration - but he should have controlled himself.
"There is no excuse for assaulting a child in his care and he does not seek to rely on any cultural justification for his actions."
After learning Hazarvi had remained in place at the mosque, Judge Brian Appleby told him: "If this was a school you would be out of a job, however, in actual fact, the community have stood by you.
"The boy was in your care and you were his teacher. You have not put forward the cultural excuse that you were able to reprimand the child in this way. Under English law you cannot."
The judge said that Hazarvi could be jailed for the offence but decided to sentence him to a 12-month community order with six months supervision and ordered him to carry out 80 hours unpaid work.
Judge Appleby said: "Given your previous good character, I feel unpaid work will be a humiliating experience and therefore a greater punishment.
"I hear deportation papers have been served on you as a result but I think that would be quite wrong for those steps to be taken."
