"Women Are Being Beheaded for Taking Their Veil Off": Honor Killings On Rise in Iraq
By Terri Judd, Independent UK. Posted April 30, 2008.
At first glance Shawbo Ali Rauf appears to be slumbering on the grass, her pale brown curls framing her face, her summer skirt spread about her. But the awkward position of her limbs and the splattered blood reveal the true horror of the scene.
The 19-year-old Iraqi was, according to her father, murdered by her own in-laws, who took her to a picnic area in Dokan and shot her seven times. Her crime was to have an unknown number on her mobile phone. Her "honor killing" is just one in a grotesque series emerging from Iraq, where activists speak of a "genocide" against women in the name of religion.
In the latest such case, it was reported yesterday that a 17-year-old girl, Rand Abdel-Qader, was stabbed to death last month by her father for becoming infatuated with a British soldier serving in southern Iraq.
In Basra alone, police acknowledge that 15 women a month are murdered for breaching Islamic dress codes. Campaigners insist it is a conservative figure.
Violence against women is rampant, rising every day with the power of the militias. Beheadings, rapes, beatings, suicides through self-immolation, genital mutilation, trafficking and child abuse masquerading as marriage of girls as young as nine are all on the increase.
Du'a Khalil Aswad, 17, from Nineveh, was executed by stoning in front of mob of 2,000 men for falling in love with a boy outside her Yazidi tribe. Mobile phone images of her broken body transmitted on the internet led to sectarian violence, international outrage and calls for reform. Her father, Khalil Aswad, speaking one year after her death in April last year, has revealed that none of those responsible had been prosecuted and his family remained "outcasts" in their own tribe.
"My daughter did nothing wrong," he said. "She fell in love with a Muslim and there is nothing wrong with that. I couldn't protect her because I got threats from my brother, the whole tribe. They insisted they were gong to kill us all, not only Du'a, if she was not killed. She was mutilated, her body dumped like rubbish.
"I want those who committed this act to be punished but so far they have not, they are free. Honor killing is murder. This is a barbaric act."
Despite the outrage, recent calls by the Kurdish MP Narmin Osman to outlaw honour killings have been blocked by fundamentalists. "Honor killings are not actually a crime in the eyes of the government," said Houzan Mahmoud, who has had a fatwa on her head since raising a petition against the introduction of sharia law in Kurdistan. "If before there was one dictator persecuting people, now almost everyone is persecuting women.
"In the past five years it is has got [much] worse. It is difficult to described how terrible it is, how badly we have been pushed back to the dark ages. Women are being beheaded for taking their veil off. Self immolation is rising -- women are left with no choice. There is no government body or institution to provide any sort of support. Sharia law is being used to underpin government rule, denying women their most basic human rights."
In August last year, the body of 11-year-old Sara Jaffar Nimat was found in Khanaqin, Kurdistan, after she had been stoned and burnt to death. Earlier this month, two brothers and a sister were kidnapped from their home near Kirkuk by gunmen in police uniforms. The brothers were beaten to death and the woman left in a critical condition after being informed that she must obey the rules of an "Islamic state". One week ago, a journalist, Begard Huseein, was murdered in her home in Arbil, northern Iraq. Her husband, Mohammed Mustafa, stabbed her because she was in love with another man, according to local reports.
The stoning death of Ms. Aswad led to the establishment of an Internal Ministry unit in Kurdistan to combat violence against women. It reported that last year in Sulaymaniyah, a city of 1 million people, there were 407 reported offences, beheadings, beatings, deaths through "family problems", and threats of honor killings. Rape is not included as most women are too fearful to report it for fear of retribution. Nevertheless, police in Karbala recently revealed 25 reports of rape.
The new Iraqi constitution, according to Mrs. Mahmoud, is a mass of confusing contradictions. While it states that men and women are equal under law it also decrees that sharia law -- which considers one male witness worth two females -- must be observed. The days when women could hold down key jobs or enjoy any freedom of movement are long gone. The fundamentalists have sent out too many chilling messages. In Mosul two years ago, eight women were beheaded in a terror campaign.
"It was really, really horrifying," said Mrs. Mahmoud. "Honor killings and murder are widespread. Thousands [of people] … have become victims of murder, violence and rape -- all backed by laws, tribal customs and religious rules. We urge the international community, the government to condemn this barbaric practice, and help the women of Iraq."

EGYPT: CALL FOR UNIFIED UNIFORM TO AVOID VEILED NURSES
(ANSAmed) - CAIRO, NOVEMBER 16 - For the past three years the number of nurses wearing "niqab" a veil which covers the face, worn by some Muslim women, has been on the increase, prompting the Minister of Health and Population to impose a law that unifies the nurses uniform starting next February. According to Rose al Yousif magazine, this new phenomenon in nurses' dress emerged in governmental hospitals located in the Delta governates of Egypt. However, this new trend is stiring a lot of controversy. Some claim that niqab will prevent nurses from doing their job and it is the patient's right to see the face of the person who is giving him his medication at least for identifying purposes. It could be a man under the facial cover. Numerous nurses rush to wearing the niqab immediately after their hiring saying that their jobs require the using of their hands only and there is has nothing to do with showing their faces. Also, they claim that they faced no objections from the hospital's administration. "It's important that my nurse would look me in the face because humanitarianism in treatment is part of the patient's recovery," said one patient. "I find difficulty in differentiating between colleagues who cover their face at work," said one nurse who doesn't wear the veil.

Women in hijabs 'need sunlight or risk illness'
18.07.07

The traditional hijab could be preventing some women from receiving enough sunlight on their skin
Muslim women who wear the hijab are at risk of serious illness because they do not get enough sun, doctors have warned.
They said an alarming number of women who cover their skin are suffering bone deficiencies over a lack of vitamin D.
Most of the body's vitamin D - which prevents rickets - is obtained through sunlight acting on the skin. Only a little comes from food.
Doctors told a London conference today that people with dark pigment are at risk because of "cultural reasons" and because they are less efficient at producing the vitamin.
The bone disorder rickets has now broken out in young Muslim children as babies are not getting enough calcium from mothers' breast milk.
The National Health Service is launching a campaign aimed at Muslim women, particularly Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Somalis, to encourage them to increase their vitamin D intake.
A Department of Health spokesman said: "For ethnic groups there is an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency as people with dark and pigmented skin are less efficient at making vitamin D in their skin.
"They need to spend longer outside to make similar amounts and those who wear concealing clothing are unlikely to make enough.
"Studies have shown low vitamin D levels in Asian women in the UK - particularly among those who cover most of their skin for cultural reasons."
The problem first came to light in Bradford, which has one of the highest Muslim populations in Britain.
Community leaders and doctors will today warn a conference in Acton that women in London are also in danger of passing vitamin deficiencies to their children. The Department of Health project - called Healthy Start - comes after studies show Muslim children lack vitamin D.
Officials are concerned it is driven by mothers who are not getting enough of the vitamin because they are fully covered by the hijab.
This is because vitamin D helps calcium get absorbed from the intestine and pushes the calcium into the bone.
The Government is calling on community leaders to warn Muslims they need more sunlight and better diets. Pregnant women are also advised to take vitamin D supplements and folic acid.
A spokeswoman said: "People may be at risk if they are South Asian, African or African-Caribbean and have low exposure to sunlight, for example if they observe Hijab or do not spend much time outside."
She said a poor diet or restricted diet such as veganism, also posed dangers. "Breastfeeding is recommended for all babies, however a baby may be at risk if breast-fed and the mother has a low vitamin D level herself."
Through the Healthy Start scheme qualifying families and pregnant women will be given vouchers for fruit and vegetables as well as milk and infant formula, plus free vitamin supplements.
One official said: "We are not interfering in a Muslim woman's right to wear the hijab, but we are stressing that we all need sunlight on our skins. If you have your head and skin covered, then you risk stopping these natural rays from topping up vital vitamins."

Sex clothes anger Kenyan Muslims
By John Nene
BBC News, Mombasa
Prostitutes are known for their skimpy attire, but Kenya's coastal port of Mombasa is witnessing a controversial fashion makeover.
The twilight ladies, as the city's residents refer to the sex workers, have traded their revealing outfits for the more austere buibui - a loose, floor-length gown and head covering favoured by Muslim women.
Walking along the city's main red-light streets at night, one comes across many of the buibui-clad prostitutes.
The buibui has lost its respect. I feel so embarrassed
Mariam Salma
Mombasa resident
Although most shy away from speaking to the press, a few are willing to talk.
"I'm better off wearing the buibui so I look respectable. I can avoid arrest. I am just trying to get some money to live on," one says.
Another claims she wears her buibui to hide her identity.
"I know I am sinning, but I'm forced to because I am looking for my livelihood. So to me, it's acceptable," she says.
Most of her customers are local men, not tourists. She says wearing a buibui helped them to more easily pick out women from the region.
But the phenomenon is causing a stir in the predominantly Muslim city where religious women are required to cover their bodies from head to toe.
Some female residents say it is a big disgrace.
"I feel so embarrassed that sometimes I contemplate removing my buibui and throwing it away. The buibui has lost its respect," Mariam Salma says.
Another resident, Asha Hussein, claims the sex workers are not native to Mombasa.
"They are not Muslims. Most are from Somalia and Ethiopia. They wear it to avoid public humiliation," she says.
Crackdown
Wearing the buibui not only allows prostitutes to mingle freely with other women, black buibuis allow them to hide under the cover of darkness.
When night falls it is even easier for Mombasa's prostitutes to hide
City authorities have mounted numerous operations over the years to get prostitutes off the streets, with limited success.
After the crackdowns, the prostitutes go underground for a while, creating the impression that the operation has succeeded, only to emerge later.
The newly adopted attire has ensured their trade is not disrupted.
However, it is not the first time the prostitutes have used this tactic.
It was popular in the 1990s until a religious vigilante organisation illegally rounded up the prostitutes hiding under buibuis and flogged them publicly.
The uniform of prostitutes is well known. They should stick to their disgraceful attire
Sheikh Muhammad Khalifa
Council of Imams of Kenya
Religious leaders are now urging the government to take action.
"We cannot arrest any of these women; it is the government's responsibility," says the organising secretary of the Council of Imams of Kenya, Sheikh Muhammad Khalifa.
"We are saddened because the government is ignoring the problem."
If the trend continues, police are likely to mistake respectable women for prostitutes, he says.
"For God's sake, if one has decided to join this profession, the uniform of prostitutes is well known.
"They should stick to their disgraceful attire."

Wilders presents anti-burqa bill
12 July 2007
THE HAGUE (AP) - A right-wing Dutch lawmaker wants women jailed for wearing the head-to-toe Islamic robe known as a burqa, calling it a ''symbol of oppression.''
Geert Wilders, whose Freedom Party has nine lawmakers in the 150-seat lower house of Dutch parliament, filed a proposed law change Thursday that would make wearing a burqa in public a crime punishable by up to 12 days jail.
''The burqa and niqab are a symbol of oppression of women,'' Wilders told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. He said burqas and the niqab - a full-faced veil with only a slit for the eyes - hindered integration of Muslim women into Dutch society and also were a security risk.
''If you want to wear a burqa, you should do it somewhere other than the Netherlands,'' Wilders added.
A prominent spokesman for the Dutch Islamic community, Ayhan Tonca, called Wilders' proposal ''totally out of proportion'' and accused Wilders of seeking to broaden a rift between Muslims and the rest of Dutch society.
Last November, the Dutch government said it was drawing up legislation to ban burqas, but that administration was defeated in elections the same month and the new centrist coalition of Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende has no plans to implement a burqa ban, meaning Wilders' proposal has little chance of becoming law.
However, because Wilders has submitted the proposal, it will have to be debated in Parliament and could help solidify his support among right-wing voters. He said he expected that to happen by the end of the year.
Only a handful of women wear the burqa in the Netherlands, but the debate over whether to outlaw it underscores a drift away from traditional Dutch tolerance and unease with the growing influence of Islam in the country.
About 6 percent of the Dutch population of 16 million is Muslim and Wilders accuses many Muslims of failing to integrate.
He said that a burqa ban would help women who wear the robe to find work and make Dutch friends. ''Nobody is going to employ somebody wearing a burqa,'' he added.
Wilders is well-known for his anti-Islam outbursts and is constantly under protection from Dutch security.
During last year's election campaign, he warned that the Netherlands was threatened by a ''tsunami'' of radical Islam and said Muslims should tear up half of the Quran if they wish to belong to Dutch society.
Security and intelligence services have warned Wilders that his comments risk fanning anti-Dutch sentiment in Islamic countries, but he refuses to rein in his rhetoric.
''This is not a law for Saudi Arabia, this is a law for the Netherlands,'' he said. ''I couldn't care less what people in the Middle East think about it.''
Muslim spokesman Tonca accused Wilders of attacking his faith. ''He is just involved in anti-Islamic politics,'' he said.
''This is totally out of proportion,'' Tonca added. ''He is taking on a problem that is not a problem, There are only a few people in the Netherlands who wear the burqa.''

Over a period of four months six girls aged between 17 and 20 robbed fourteen elderly women in the Tensta, Rinkeby, Sundbyberg and Hässelby suburbs of Stockholm. On Friday four of the girls were jailed by Solna district court, reported Aftonbladet.
A 19 year old was given a two month prison sentence and further probation for robbery and falsification of documents. Three 17 year olds were sentenced to youth detention of between two years and two and a half years.
The other two girls were given suspended sentences.
During the attacks the girls hid their faces behind veils. In one incident, a 71 year old woman was pushed down a staircase after three of the girls snatched her handbag.
Prosecutor Viktor Carlberg said that he was largely satisfied with the verdict.
"It was serious and repeated crime," he told Aftonbladet.

Afghan criticizes militants for hiding under burqas
(AP)
11 July 2007
KABUL, Afghanistan -Calling militant attacks cowardly work,’ Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday deplored a suicide bombing that killed 12 school children and accused militants of running from battle by donning women’s clothing.
Speaking in a measured tone, Karzai said the bravery’ of militant fighters was killing innocent people and children.’
Whenever there is pressure on them they escape under a woman’s burqa,’ said Karzai.
He did not explain that comment but could have been referring to past reports of Taleban militants in Afghanistan wearing the all-encompassing burqa to flee detection. Also, more recently, Abdul Aziz, the leader of a besieged mosque in Pakistan, was captured last week trying to slip out dressed in a burqa and high heels.
Karzai called reporters to the presidential palace to condemn Tuesday’s suicide bombing in Uruzgan province that killed at least 17 people, including 12 students. The attack in a crowded market wounded more than 30 people, including eight Dutch soldiers whom the attacker apparently had targeted.
I pray to God that Afghanistan is soon freed from all this suffering,’ Karzai said, noting that mass battles between Western militaries and Taleban militants were down this year but that suicide and roadside bombings were up.
Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry spokesman said it is easy for Taleban fighters to falsely claim that civilians were killed by Western or Afghan military action and that militants are forcing locals to lie to journalists.
The enemy is threatening the local people to lie to the media,’ Gen. Zahir Azimi said. They even give them telephone numbers of the different agencies to call them and tell them that, for example, 100 civilians were killed in an airstrike by the coalition or NATO.’
Azimi said if civilians don’t do as ordered, the Taleban fighters will kill them. He said in one case in Sangin district of Helmand province airstrikes destroyed two Taleban trucks but that media reports later said 40 civilians were killed.
Karzai has repeatedly deplored civilian deaths caused by NATO or US military action, saying more must be done to prevent such casualties. But military officials have recently begun claiming that some reports are nothing but information warfare planted by the Taleban. That tactic could be an attempt to lower support for NATO’s mission in European capitals.
Tribal elders over the weekend claimed 108 civilians were killed in a bombing in Farah province, but no officials have backed up those claims. However, the governor of Kunar province said 27 civilians were killed by NATO military action late last week in his northeastern province.
In violence, a joint Afghan-US convoy came under attack in Paktia province on Wednesday, sparking a fight that killed two police and four Taleban, said Ghulam Dastager, deputy provincial police chief.
In Helmand province, Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces killed eight suspected Taleban on Tuesday, the Ministry of Interior said.
Violence has spiked in Afghanistan the last six weeks. More than 3,200 people, mostly militants, have died in insurgency-related violence this year, according a count by The Associated Press based on numbers from Afghan and Western officials.

BAGHDAD, Nissrin Muhammad, 19, an economics student, says she is desperate and does not know what to do with her two-month-old brother, Abdul-Aziz, after her mother was killed a few weeks ago for not wearing a veil.
Being the oldest daughter and with a handicapped father (he lost an arm years ago in an industrial accident), Nissrin was forced to leave college to look after her youngest brother and their home. She depends on her other two younger brothers, aged 14 and 16, to work and bring food to the family. One works as a cleaner and the other sells things in the streets.
“My mother was killed leaving my infant brother without milk. I really don’t know what to do as he won’t take powdered milk and we cannot move around our neighbourhood to look for a woman who could breast-feed him.
“I stay awake all night crying because I lost my mother for such an idiotic thing.
“One day she went out to buy some stuff for him and she left him with me at home. She went out as she always used to and extremists just shot her dead in the middle of the street. According to witnesses, they were shouting that this would be the fate of all women that don’t wear a veil.
“It was a shock to my whole family. No one expected that this lovely woman would one day die for such a foolish thing, that she would lose such a beautiful life because of a piece of cloth.
“Since my mother was killed on 18 June, my father left his job as a cook in a restaurant. He just stays at home crying for my mother and drinking alcohol, things he never did before.
“The extremists have destroyed our life. My brothers and I had to stop studying, my father quit work and Abdul-Aziz is suffering from malnutrition because he won’t take powdered milk.
“I hope I can find a woman who can breast feed my brother and keep him alive. I would give him to someone to stop him dying.”

Men disguised as Muslim women rob bank Tue Jul 3, 9:39 AM ET
SARAJEVO (Reuters) - Two armed men disguised as Muslim women in burqas held up a bank in Sarajevo and got away with some $40,000, Bosnian police said on Tuesday.
They said the pair entered a Union bank branch in the capital wearing head-to-toe black dresses and veils typical of women adhering to the orthodox Islamic code and trained guns on customers. They then made customers lie on the floor while the emptied the tills, police added.
"Everything happened in a moment. Two persons in black niqabs (burqas) came into the bank. I thought they were ladies," the Sarajevo daily Oslobodjenje quoted bank customer Mehmedalija Komarac as saying.
Women in burqas and men with long beards have become a common sight in the Bosnian capital in recent years.

JAIPUR:
Rajasthan Governor and UPA Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil on Sunday left historians and Muslim social activists astounded by her remarks that the purdah (veil) system was introduced in India to protect women from Mughal aggressors.
Addressing a function marking the 467th birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap at the Nagar Parishad Auditorium in Udaipur, Ms. Patil said though Indian culture always respected women, the veil system began during the Mughal rule to "save women from Mughal invaders."
Ms. Patil said: "Today we are citizens of free India. There is need to put a stop to such practices. That alone will ensure real respect for women. When women are progressing in every field, it is our duty to discontinue such practices."
Historians said the veil system was prevalent much before the Mughal invasion. "There is evidence of construction of separate `zanana' chambers for women in the Chittaurgarh fort in the 11th century," said Varsha Joshi of the Institute of Rajasthan Studies.
Dr. Joshi said women were not allowed to take part in the coronation ceremonies of Rajput rulers, and they were mostly confined to home. "To argue that purdah started because of Mughals amounts to taking a very narrow view of history."
State president of Jamat-e-Islami Hind Mohammed Salim said the opinion that women adopted the veil because of the fear of Mughal rulers reflected the distorted view of history taken by the Sangh Parivar. "It is unfortunate that Ms. Patil found the communal forces' views convincing enough to incorporate them in her address."
"Factually incorrect"
The State secretary of the All-India Milli Council, Abdul Qayoom Akhtar, said Ms. Patil's remarks were "factually incorrect and historically untenable."
"We have been listening to such comments in the false propaganda of Sangh Parivar earlier. It is surprising that Ms. Patil has chosen to agree with the Sangh's line of thinking," he said.
However, Congress spokesperson Param Navdeep, contacted by The Hindu, defended Ms. Patil's remarks, saying they should be seen in the light of the life and times of the erstwhile Mewar ruler. "There should be no controversy about it. It is an established fact that women were the target of aggression during the Mughal rule," she said.
