Woman tortured, raped and paraded naked in Mian Channu

MIAN CHANNU: Seven armed men gang raped and paraded a 35 year old mother of two in Mian Channu.

According to eyewitnesses, seven armed men stormed the house of an electrician in village 34/15-L, in Mian Channu where they first tortured cotton-picker Shaheen* and later raped her.

Shaheen’s sister-in-law, Afia* said that Shaheen was in the fields working along with the other members of the family when armed men grabbed her off the field and took her into her house where they beat her up. Afia said that she and her family members pleaded with the attackers to let Shaheen go, however, the attackers resorted to aerial firing to harass the family members and others in the neighbourhood as they carried out their act.

Afia added that the aerial firing had prompted the people to flee the scene, even forcing back those who attempted to rescue Shaheen.

After they beat her, Shaheen was paraded naked through the village, being made to walk shorn of her clothes for almost two kilometres before her attackers took her to another house in the village where they gang raped her.

Another witness to the event, Allah Bakhsh, a lower ranking government official, said that the culprits managed to flee before the police arrived. Another witness, Nadeem said that the incident had something to do with Shaheen’s husband, Abdul Majeed who ran an electrical supplies store in the village.

He said that one of the criminals involved, Ashraf, had a daughter who used to frequent the road in front of Majeed’s store travelling to and from her college. Nadeem alleged that Majeed used to ogle Ashraf’s daughter, and despite numerous warnings, Majeed had not stopped this behaviour. The allegation was denied by Majeed.

Station house officer of the Mian Channu precinct said that they had registered a case under sections 365B/376, 337 H2/148 and 149 against the culprits and were raiding different locations to locate the attackers. He added that the sections under which the case had been filed were non-bailable, hence there would not be any relief for the attackers once they are arrested.

A DNA sample from the victim had been collected and sent to Lahore for analysis.

The victim, Shaheen has appealed to the Chief Minister of Punjab and the Chief Justice of Supreme Court for justice.

Pakistani police on Thursday arresteda woman they say killed her husband and was attempting to cook his body parts, after he planned to take a second wife without her permission.
According to family law in Islamic Pakistan, a man must get permission from his first wife before his second marriage, but the law is rarely observed.
Police arrested Zainab Bibi, 32, and her nephew Zaheer, 22, in the Shah Faisal colony of Pakistan's southern metropolis of Karachi, local police commander Nadeem Baig said.
"They killed Ahmad Abbas, Zainab's husband, and chopped his body into pieces and were about to cook the flesh in a bowl," he told AFP. Baig added both a bowl containing the husband’s diced flesh and knife used in the murder were recovered.
Television networks reportedly showed gruesome footage of the human flesh in a bowl ready for the stove.
A neighbor alerted the police to the crime and investigations were ongoing, said Baig.
"There could be two factors behind her intention to cook the husband. One is to destroy the evidence and the other could be her immense hatred against him for seeking a second wife," he said.

Prosecution tells tribunal about his links to war crimes

Delawar Hossain Sayedee along with other collaborators kept a Hindu girl confined to her father's house at Parerhat in Pirojpur and raped her day after day during the Liberation War, the International Crimes Tribunal was told yesterday.

The victim, Bhanu Shaha, daughter of Bipod Shaha, left the country after liberation out of fear of public humiliation. She still lives in India, said Syed Rezaur Rahman, a senior prosecutor, while placing the opening statement against Sayedee.

In the tribunal's first trial since its formation on March 25 last year, the prosecution on Sunday got through 61 pages of the statement in court.

Yesterday, Rezaur read out the remaining 27 pages before the three-member panel of judges headed by Nizamul Huq.

On October 3, Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Sayedee, one of the seven Jamaat-BNP leaders detained over war crimes links, was charged with 20 counts of crimes. The charges include genocide, murder, rape, arson, abduction and torture of civilians.

The tribunal will start taking depositions of witnesses on December 7.

Rezaur described the crimes against humanity allegedly committed by Sayedee in 1971 and also the background of the case.

He told the tribunal that Sayedee had led a 50-member team of the Razakar Bahini, an anti-liberation force, in attacking Hindu Para of Hoglabunia under Pirojpur.

Sensing the presence of the miscreants, members of the Hindu community had managed to flee.

The razakars, however, got hold of Shefali Gharami, wife of Madhusudan Gharami, and raped her.

Shefali gave birth to a baby girl after the war but, like Bhanu Shaha, she had to leave for India.

On May 5, 1971, Saif Mizanur Rahman, deputy magistrate of then Pirojpur Sub-Division; Foyezur Rahman Ahmed, sub-divisional police officer and father of famed writer Humayun Ahmed and noted educationalist-writer Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, and Abdur Razzak, SDO in charge of Pirojpur, were taken to the Baleshwar river bank and shot to death.

Sayedee as a member of the killing squad was present there.

Under his pressure, some 100-150 Hindus of Parerhat and other villages converted to Islam and had to go to a mosque, said the prosecutor.

He oversaw the creation of a fund with cash and other property looted by the razakars from the locals, mainly Hindu families. He also issued a Fatwa (religious edict) legalising war booty, said the prosecutor.

He also succeeded in allying himself with the Pakistan army, as he had a good command of Arabic and Urdu.

Sayedee went into hiding after the war but returned to his home district of Pirojpur in 1986. In the guise of an Islamic scholar, he began addressing waz mahfils or religious gatherings to hide his past, Rezaur said.

Idol worshipper arrested in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s religious police arrested an African man after he was accused of worshipping an idol placed inside his shop, a newspaper said on Sunday.

Members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice raided the shop in the western town of Taif after receiving complaints from local residents that the African bows and kneels for the idol god.

“They found the idol placed in corner of the shop…they impounded the idol and arrested the man,” Alsaudi Arabic language daily said.

Like many other Bengalis, eminent sculptor Ferdousy Priyabhashini is happy to see those accused of mass murder and rape during Bangladesh's 1971 independence war finally stand trial.

Ms Priyabhashini was 23 at that time, when a group of Pakistani soldiers and their Bangladeshi associates stormed into her house and dragged her away. Her husband and three children watched helplessly as she was bundled into an army jeep.

For seven months, she was repeatedly raped and tortured at an army camp in the capital Dhaka, she says.

"I was subjected to extreme physical and mental torture. They had no mercy. Many of my friends and relatives were killed in front of me," she said.

"It is heartening to see, 40 years after those atrocities, that some of those responsible for those gruesome acts are in the dock," Ms Priyabhashini said.

Violent birth

Bangladesh is yet to come to terms with its violent birth in 1971, after the Pakistani government sent in its army to stop was what was then East Pakistan from becoming independent.

Suspected collaborators were sometimes killed by their captors.

It is not exactly clear how many people died, but official figures estimate that more than three million people were killed and hundreds of thousands of women raped during the nine-month bloody battle.

The minority Hindu community was particularly targeted. Many Hindus were even forcibly converted to Islam.

The war ended with the surrender of Pakistani forces to India, which intervened after millions of refugees flooded its eastern states to escape the brutality.

Soon after the war, there were demands from the victims and human rights groups to try those responsible for the slaughter, rape and looting.

However, Delhi, Dhaka and Islamabad agreed not to pursue war-crimes charges against the Pakistani soldiers, who were allowed to go back to their country.

Collaborators pursued

Despite various attempts, efforts to try those Bangladeshis who allegedly collaborated with the Pakistani forces did not materialise until last year.

In 2010, for the first time, the Awami League-led government set up the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to try those Bangladeshis accused of collaborating with Pakistani forces and committing atrocities.

So far seven people, including two from the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and five from the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party, have been arrested and are facing trial in Dhaka. All of them deny the charges.

The Jamaat-e-Islami is the country's largest Islamist party and it opposed Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan at that time. Some of its members allegedly fought alongside the Pakistani army.

However, the two opposition parties accuse the government of carrying out a vendetta and trying to use the trial to curb their political activities.

"The trial will be transparent and independent. International observers will be allowed to come and watch the trial. The accused will be given full opportunity to defend their case," said the Bangladeshi law minister, Shafique Ahmed.

Despite the overwhelming public opinion in support of the trial, there are some bottlenecks.

Fair trial doubts

The leader of Jamaat-e-Islami is accused of more than 50 killings during the war.

First of all, this tribunal is almost a domestic set-up and the three judges sitting on the tribunal are from Bangladesh. The United Nations and other international agencies do not have any major role to play.

Human rights groups said some of the rules were not consistent with international standards, as followed by war crimes tribunals in Rwanda or Cambodia.

"Bangladesh has promised to meet international standards in these trials, but it has some way to go to meet this commitment," Human Rights Watch said in a statement issued earlier this year.

Defence counsels also complained about a lack of time for their team to prepare for the case. They also argued that Bangladesh didn't have the expertise to try war crimes, so the trials could not be fair.

"Both prosecution and defence do not have sufficient training in a trial of this magnitude," argued Abdur Razaaq, a senior lawyer for the accused and also a leader of the Jamaat.

"Our legal infrastructure is also not adequate to handle this case. So, how we can expect a fair trial?"

'Culture of impunity'

However, the government vehemently argued that it had enough legal expertise and manpower to conduct the trial. It promised that there would not be any political interference or revenge.

Despite the debate over whether or not the tribunal meets international standards, there is broad agreement in the country that the trial is long overdue. The consequences are likely to be severe if it doesn't go ahead this time.

"The trial will put an end to the culture of impunity, said Aly Zaker, an eminent writer and director.

"If not, the peace and harmony which the people of Bangladesh are trying to practise can be totally destroyed. So this trial is very important for our country and our people," he said.

(ANSAmed) - AMMAN, NOVEMBER 16 - A man from the southern city of Tafilah killed his sister in public by slitting her throat for being involved in a romantic relation, police sources said on Wednesday.

The 18 year old man attacked his sister in the main bus station of the town, before being arrested, said the sources.

Eye witnesses said medics arrived when the girl was making her last breath as investigation continued to determine other culprits in the brutal attack.

The killer told police he wanted to kill his sister to cleanse the family honour after the victim admitted involvement with a man who wanted to marry her, said the police sources.

The death brings number of women killed in the name of honour to nearly 15 since the start of the year, say officials.

The government promised to adopt an iron fist policy with such cases following campaigns from human rights groups.

But activists say strict social habits make it difficult to eradicate such phenomena.

Killers are often handed a sentence between six months to one year for the murder, say activists.

Manama: Around three quarters of Arab youth want to migrate to countries out of their region due to rising unemployment in Arab states, an Arab League official said.

"Due to their poor participation in society and politics and to rising joblessness, 70 per cent of the Arab youth want to migrate out of the region," Khalid Al Wahishi, director of Population Policy and Immigration at Arab League, said.

Empower the youth

"We at Arab League have been warning member states at all our meetings to empower the youth. Unemployment, alarmingly high at 26 per cent, poor participation of youth and illiteracy are major hindrances to population policy development and implementation," Al Wahishi told delegates at a gathering of population experts from member-countries in Qatar.

The ratio of youth in the population of Arab countries is very high and requires efforts to empower them and raise their participation in politics, he said.

"The changes taking place in some Arab countries clearly show that it is the youth of these states who have played a leading role in the reforms movement," he said, quoted by Qatari daily The Peninsula on Tuesday.

Unemployment

According to the official, the Arab League has been arguing for several years that there was an urgent need to tackle the problems of unemployment in member-states and to empower the youth and raise their participation in society and politics.

The 13th meeting of the heads of national councils and committees of the population in Arab countries in Doha, opened on Monday, is bringing together delegates from Arab League and global agencies concerned with population to review the outcome of political and social developments, population and youth issues in Arab states.

The delegates will also discuss the demographic situation in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and review the activities of national population councils and committees in 2010.
