52 dead in two days of Karachi violence

KARACHI — At least 52 people have been killed in a wave of street violence between rival ethnic groups and criminal gangs in Pakistan's financial capital of Karachi, police said Friday.

The mounting death toll over the past 48 hours in the country's biggest city comes despite the deployment of hundreds of additional police and paramilitary troops last month to deal with Karachi's worst unrest in 16 years.

"At least 31 people were killed on Thursday and four more this morning," city police chief Saud Mirza told AFP.

"Some 17 people had been killed on Wednesday, taking the toll to 52," he said.

A security official speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed the latest toll and blamed criminal gangs for most of the violence.

Underscoring the brutality of the violence, another security official said the bodies of most of those kidnapped and killed on Thursday had been stuffed in sacks before being dumped in various parts of the city.

He also said that the bullet-riddled bodies of four young men who worked for a mobile phone company had been found in a van with their hands and feet trussed up in the impoverished Shershah neighbourhood.

"At least 20 killed on Thursday were kidnapped and tortured by armed gangsters. Their bodies were later stuffed in sacks and thrown away in different areas," the security official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Notes had been left inside the pockets of clothes worn by some of the victims that read "Want more bodies?", the official said.

The federal and the provincial governments have struggled to quell the unrest, which this year has been at its deadliest in years.

A former MP for the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Waja Karimdad, was among those killed in the most recent bout of violence.

Independent economist A.B. Shahid estimated that 20 percent of the city's business was shut down Thursday with markets closed in southern neighbourhoods to protest against extortion money demanded by criminal gangs.

Karachi is used by NATO to ship the bulk of its supplies to troops fighting in Afghanistan and accounts for around a fifth of the country's GDP.

Regular bouts of unrest, mainly in the form of gunfights and assassinations, has been linked to ethnic tensions between the Mohajirs, the Urdu-speaking majority represented by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), and Pashtun migrants affiliated to the Awami National Party (ANP).

Karachi, currently a city of 18 million and the economic powerhouse of the country, has seen its population explode since independence in 1947.

Its neighbourhoods have been swollen by a huge influx of migrants from across the country, but particularly the deprived, Pashtun northwest, looking for jobs and more recently to escape Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked violence.

Most of the killings have been reported in the southern Lyari neighbourhood, a PPP stronghold infested by powerful criminal gangs.

Mohammad Akram, a spokesman for the country's largest charity, Edhi Foundation, said that many people had visited their morgue in search of missing relatives.

Karachi's worst-affected areas are impoverished and heavily populated neighbourhoods where most of the criminal gangs are believed to be hiding.

The independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said 800 people have been killed in Karachi so far this year, compared with 748 in 2010.

Aug 19 (Reuters) - A teenage suicide bomber blew himself up among worshippers offering Friday prayers at a mosque in northwest Pakistan, killing at least 47 people and wounding more than 70, a top government official said.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack in Jamrud, a main town in Khyber, but officials suspected Taliban militants who have been active for past years in the tribal region that shares border with Afghanistan.

Officials earlier said 34 people had been killed.

"Many of the wounded succumbed to their injuries, adding to the toll that may rise further as there are still people in critical condition," region's top government administrator Mutahir Zeb said.

Zeb said the attack was carried out by a teenage boy who struck when worshippers were offering prayers.

The mosque is located in an area inhabited by Kokikhel tribesmen, who are opposed to Taliban activity and have been fighting to push them out of their region. "The blast could be a reaction to that," Zeb said.

Earlier, another senior official said about 20 bodies were brought to two hospitals, while relatives took others directly to their homes.

A witness, Haji Zarmeen, said he helped removed at least 12 bodies from the rubble.

TV footage showed blood on the walls and ceiling of the mosque as people collected clothes and sandals scattered by the blast.

Pakistan has seen a wave of violence in recent years in which thousands of people have been killed.

There have been several bomb attacks since U.S. special forces killed al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in a secret raid in a Pakistani town in May.

Al Qaeda-linked militants have vowed to avenge bin Laden's death.

Pakistani troops have carried out several operations against the militants, but they have shown resilience and have responded with a campaign of suicide and bomb attacks across the country.

Since bin Laden's death, Washington has stepped up pressure on Pakistan to go after militants, using its border sanctuaries to attack U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

It has also intensified its campaign of drone attacks in Pakistan's northwest.

A U.S. drone fired two missiles at a house in the South Waziristan tribal region on the Afghan border, killing four suspected militants on Friday, local intelligence officials said.

Drone strikes have been a major source of friction between the United States and Pakistan. Ties have deteriorated since the death of bin Laden in the attacks which Pakistan sees as a violation of its sovereignty.

Pakistan's largest city and commercial hub Karachi also suffered from violence, with criminal, political and ethnic mayhem entering a third day. At least 55 people have been killed since Wednesday, police said.

Seven people were killed on Friday in violence that started as gang warfare, but has since expanded to include political and ethnic clashes -- a phenomenon that has long plagued the city of more than 18 million.

Members of a Scarborough mosque have expressed shock and disbelief that their “nice” and “humble” religious leader has been charged with a string of sexual assaults.

Mohammad Masroor, the imam at the Baitul Mukarram Islamic Society on Danforth Ave., faces 13 charges involving sexual offences and death threats relating to five alleged victims.

Police said Masroor, 48, travelled the world before settling in Toronto in 2008, and believe there could be more victims, here and abroad.

Abdur Rouf Tarafdar was one of more than a dozen people who vouched for Masroor’s pious character as he left afternoon prayer on Wednesday.

“I know him. Behind him I pray,” he said.

Abdul Fattah Aboud, an imam at the Baitul Aman Masjid mosque a few blocks away, said the father of five used to wave as he passed by on his way to prayer.

“Is it possible? Someone like him?” he said. “He’s a very well respected person in the community.”

Det. Const. Karen Armstrong said Masroor used his position of leadership “to his advantage.” She said Masroor, who teaches in the mosque as well as in private homes, knew the alleged victims.

Masroor was arrested Aug. 10 after a three-week investigation that is still ongoing. The assaults allegedly occurred between Nov. 1, 2008 and July 28, 2011.

“The victims are both male and female,” Armstrong said. “We believe there are other victims as (the accused) has lived and worked worldwide.”

Masroor taught in Florida, Michigan and Bangladesh before coming to Canada, according to police. He has also lived and taught in Germany, France, Hungary, Singapore and Sri Lanka but police said the investigation is not limited to those areas.

Toronto investigators have yet to speak with foreign police forces about the case, Armstrong said.

Members of the mosque were especially upset that the allegations come during the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims fast during daylight hours.

“For a Muslim, this is very shameful. We really condemn it,” said Muti Mughal. “I still don’t believe it.”

Police said Masroor is being held in custody, and that a publication ban is in place

18.01.2009 ஞாயிறு அன்று காவல்துறை அனுமதியுடன் சேலம் சூரமங்களம், அம்மாபாளையம் மெயின் ரோட்டில் தமிழ்நாடு தவ்ஹீத் ஜமாஅத் சார்பாக பொதுக்கூட்டம் நடந்தது. இஸ்லாத்தின் அடிப்படை விஷயங்களை தமிழ்நாடு தவ்ஹீத் ஜமாஅத்தின் மாநிலத் துணைத் தலைவர் ஃபக்கீர் முஹம்மத் அல்தாஃபி உரையாற்றினார். மக்கள் பெரும்திரளாக ஆர்வத்துடன் வந்து கலந்துகொண்டனர். கூட்டம் அமைதியாக முடிந்தது.

ஆனால் ஓரிறைக் கொள்கையின் வளர்ச்சியை பிடிக்காத அந்த பகுதியைச் சார்ந்த சக்கரவர்த்தி ஹாரூன், தமீமுல் அன்சாரி 'என்பவர்கள் தலமையில் நூற்றுக்கு மேற்பட்ட கும்பல் தவ்ஹீத் கல்லூரியில் உருட்டுக் கட்டையுடன் (மதுவில் மிதந்து) வந்து தொழுது கொண்டிருந்த மாணவர்களையும் ஆசிரியர்களை தாக்கியது.

படுகாயம் அடைந்த மாணவர்கள், ஆசிரியர்கள் சேலம் அரசு பொது மருத்துமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

மேலும் கல்லூரியின் அலுவலக அறை, மின் விளக்குகள், தொழுகை கால அட்டவணை, கல்லூரியின் முகப்பில் இருந்த கல்லூரி முகவரி பேனர்கள் என்று கையில் கிடைத்ததை எல்லாம் கண்மூடித்தனமாக தாக்கினர். மேலும் கல்லூரியை குண்டுவைத்து தகர்த்துவிடுவோம் என்று கொக்கரித்து சென்றுள்ளனர்.

புதிதாக இஸ்லாத்தை தழுவியவர்கள் என்றும் கூறியும் அவர்களையும் சரமாரியாக தாக்கியது அந்த கும்பல், இதில் இன்னும் கொடுமையாக சரியாக பேசத்தெரியாத புதிதாக இஸ்லாத்தை தழுவி மாணவரை படிக்கட்டில் தள்ளிவிட்டு கீழே விழுந்த மாணவரை மேலும் பலர் சேர்ந்து அடித்து நெருக்கியுள்ளனர்.

பள்ளிவாசல் நுழைவாயில்களில் மாணவர்களின் இரத்தம் படிந்திருந்தது. கல்லூரியின் நுழைவாயில்களின் மின்விளக்குகள், இருக்கைகள் என்று அனைத்தும் நெருக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது.

தாக்குதல் சம்பவம் கேள்விபட்டு இடத்திற்கு வந்த ஜங்சன் கிளைத் தலைவர் சிராஜ் அவர்களை அத்தனை குண்டர்ககளும் சேர்ந்து கொண்டு வெறித்தனமாக தாக்கினர்.

இதைப் போன்று தாக்குதல் சம்பவம் கேள்விபட்டு தம் மனைவியுடன் வந்த சேலம் மாவட்டம் துணைச் செயலாளர் பக்கீர் ஓலிஅவர்களை நோக்கி "இவனை அடிங்கடா, இவன் மனைவியை ரேப் பண்ணுங்கடா" என்று கத்திய கும்பல் அவரதுமனைவியின் சேலையை பிடித்து இழுத்தது.

மேலும் அவர் தலையில் போட்டிருந்த தூண்டை இழுத்தது சென்றது. இவ்வாறு அவர்களின் வெறியாட்டம் கணக்கில்லாமல் தொடர்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தது.

இது தொடர்பாக காவல்துறைக்கு தகவல் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது. காவல்துறை வந்தவுடன் அந்த கும்பல் தப்பிச் சென்றது. உருட்டுக்கட்டையுடன் இருந்த இரண்டு குண்டர்களை மாணவர்கள் பிடித்துக் கொடுத்தனர். அவர்களை கொண்டு சென்ற காவல்துறை அவர்களையும் விட்டுவிட்டது.

இதற்கு காரணமானவர்களையும் தாக்கிய குண்டர்களையும் இதுவரை கைது செய்யவில்லை.

மேலும் தாக்குதல் நடந்த இடத்திற்கு வந்த காவல்துறை தாக்கப்பட்ட ஆசிரியர் இர்ஷாத் அவர்களை காவல்துறை கைது செய்து சென்ற போது மக்கள் கொதிக்கப்படைந்ததால் அவரை காவல் துறை விடுவித்தது.

மேலும் பெண்கள் பகுதிக்கு சென்று கதவை உடைக்க முயன்ற குண்டர்கள், எழுத கூசும் வார்த்தைகளால் கடுமையாகி திட்டிச் சென்றுள்ளனர்.

இவ்வளவு வெறியாட்டமும் நடந்து முடிந்தும் காவல்துறை ஒரு துரும்பைக்கூட நகர்த்தாமல் இந்தா அந்தா என்று படம் காட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. கல்லூரிக்கு வருவதும் போவதும் என்ற செயலைத் தவிர வேறெதையும் காவல்துறை செய்யவில்லை.

முதல் தகவல் அறிக்கை பதிவு செய்வதைக்கூட இழுத்தடித்து கடுமையான நிர்பந்தம் செய்த பின்னர் 147, 148, 324, 448, 427, 204 (இ), 506 (ஒஒ) ஆகிய பிரிவுகளில் வழக்கு பதிவு செய்த காவல்துறை இதுவரை யாரையும் கைது செய்யவில்லை.

கல்லூரி தாக்கப்பட்ட செய்தி கேட்டு திரண்ட மக்கள் கடும் கோபத்தில் உள்ளனர். காவல்துறை சரியான நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கவில்லை எனில் இன்னும் நிலை மோசமாகும்.

LAGOS — The fear of attacks by Islamic militants in Nigeria is spreading South to the nation’s commercial capital, Lagos, where city buses are being checked for bombs.

This followed a text message purportedly sent by the group warning people not to take government buses because they are a target.

Managing Director of Lagos Bus Service, LAGBUS, Mr Yemi Odubela, was quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, as saying the firm was aware of the threat and was asking passengers to remain vigilant and cooperate with spot checks of their bags.

The report noted that at the Eko roundabout bus stop on Victoria Island, a passenger said her bags were checked when she boarded the bus.

She said: “They checked us before we entered at Leventis. They checked us to see if anybody was carrying any equipment inside their bags. So they checked us before we entered. mencheck Men. Women check Women.”

Asked if the new measures made her to feel safer, she said: “Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.  We are afraid.  We are afraid. Everybody is afraid to enter, you see that blue bus and this red one.  We are afraid. They checked under all the seats before we entered.

So maybe there is something they hide under the seats but there was nothing under  the seats.”
However, another man getting off the LAGBUS number 55, said he did not believe the Boko Haram threat.

He said: “They have been operating. Even when they have been bombing, have they been giving warnings?  No. They have not been giving warnings. They do it. So I want to believe that people are just trying to use that to cause confusion.”
Another woman passenger said she had to take the bus, despite the threat.

“I have no choice,” she said. “Because of the rain, I have no other transport means to get to this place.” This passenger says Boko Haram will find it far harder to operate in the south. “We will continue to take the bus because there is security in Lagos,” said the passenger.”I don’t believe they will come to this place. I just call it a threat. They can’t come down to the south.

We will check them here. LAGBUS is even better because at LAGBUS you queue. So you can check anybody who enters that LAGBUS. So if it just an ordinary bus like this one that everybody jumps inside it is a different thing.”

A group that says it is fighting for a separate Islamic state is thought responsible for a series of attacks across the north. Bomb attacks and ambushes in the northern city of Maiduguri have indefinitely closed the university there and led to an exodus of civilians, some of whom are newly unemployed motorbike taxi drivers after all motorbikes were banned in Maiduguri because Islamic militants were using them to throw bombs.

The Islamic sect Boko Haram recognizes neither Nigeria’s constitution nor the federal government and says it is fighting for a separate nation in the north, ruled by Islamic law.

The group bombed the police force headquarters in Abuja and a church just outside the capital, which is now under a limited curfew with all bars and movie theaters closed by 10 p.m. President Goodluck Jonathan has offered to open talks with the group, but Boko Haram leaders have so far refused, saying they cannot meet with security forces that are trying to destroy them.

ABUJA — In the wake of concerns over collaboration between the Boko Haram sect and foreign Islamic insurgents, the Federal Government has deported 3,185 foreigners.

Public Relations Officer of Nigerian Immigration Service, Mr Joachim Olumba, who disclosed this to Vanguard, weekend, said the foreign nationals were deported after rigorous and enhanced screening at the nation’s legal entry points, noting that the deportees included those whose presence in Nigeria was found to be inimical to national security.

He said 31 Somalis and 382 Sudanese had been screened and had been established to be legal residents in Nigeria and legally engaged in the country as well.

Meanwhile, the eight ex-militants who were ordered repatriated from Sri Lanka by the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Chief Executive of the Amnesty Pogramme, Hon. Kingsley Kuku, for indiscipline would be handed over to the State Security Service when they returned home this week.

The Amnesty Office said in a statement by the Head of Media and Communications, Mr. Henry Ugbolue, that Kuku had to take a firm action against indiscipline among the ex-militants to ensure objectives of the amnesty programmes were achieved.

The ex-militants were expelled from a vocational training centre in Sri Lanka for offences ranging from fighting to wilful destruction of training equipment.

The statement read in part:

“The six trainees were expelled from a vocational training centre in Sri Lanka for offences ranging from fighting to wilful destruction of training equipment.

“The Six trainees who travelled out to Topher Zhang Maritime Vocational Centre Sri Lanka just a month ago to commence vocational training in either undersea welding or boat building are due back in the country this week and shall be immediately handed over to the Department of State Services (SSS) for proper profiling and possible prosecution.

“Further, Hon. Kuku has instructed the Accounts Department of the Amnesty Office to stop forthwith the remittances of monthly stipends to the accounts of the affected trainees. The Federal Government will no longer condone serial cases of indiscipline among Amnesty Programme’s trainees posted to vocational or skills acquisition centres both within the country and abroad. Indeed Hon. Kuku says the Amnesty Office is considering outright expulsion of unruly trainees from the Programme”.

The list of the indicted trainees were: Chinese Igoli, Weri Kingdom, Ekankumor Ogosi, Prince Jonathan Omie, Brinimugha Orunisiede, Elvis Oto, Agbabo Suama, Sinclear Thursday.
