Christian girls in Pakistan continue to be kidnapped, abducted and forcibly converted to Islam

London: July 30, 2012. (CLAAS) In the recent months there have several reports about the ongoing persecution, kidnapping and abduction of the Christian women and girls in Pakistan. According to the news, a daughter of Morris Masih from Rawalpindi was kidnapped by Mohammad Abid and Tariq Ali. Morris Masih has asked the police to register a case against Abid and Ali and recover his daughter, but they have refused to register the case. In another case, in Faisalabad Christian Waris Masih’s wife was kidnapped, he has also reported it to the police, but they failed to give him any information about his wife. Also in Chunian, Punjab, the sister of a pastor has been kidnaped raped and forcibly converted to Islam. Muzamal Arif, Pastor Aurangzeb's sister, was kidnapped around a month ago by some Muslim men while returning home from college. She was held for days, suffered sexual abuse, threats and violence. In such a state of terror and exhaustion, first she was coerced into converting to Islam, and then marriage. The girl is now a Muslim and married to Muhammad Nadeem. Her family reported the incident to the police station in Chunian, but no investigations have been conducted and instead her abductors have presented a report to the court attesting to the girl now being Muslim and legally married. Among other things, the girl is a minor and, according to the law, marriage is not permitted to minors. However, according to local Christians, the kidnappers' family is rich and powerful and manages to bypass these legal measures. For the last several years there has been an alarming increase in the kidnapping and false conversion of Christian girls. According to a report from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), last year 1800 Christian and Hindu girls were forcibly converted to Islam. The police hardly registered any cases against the Muslim kidnappers and sometimes even supported them. On some occasions courts even used Islamic laws in favour of the perpetrators. This is a growing problem for Christians and Hindus and CLAAS has raised its concerns with the Pakistani government, but unfortunately it has fallen on deaf ears. Pakistan is becoming an increasingly unsafe place for religious minorities.

Man whipped for drinking water in Iran

Our Persian contact sent this to us this evening. (Thanks Shab) This man was whipped for drinking water during the day during the Muslim month of Ramadan where Muslims are instructed to skip lunch and stuff their faces every morning before sunrise and then again every night after sunset. But they are not allowed to eat or drink during the day and only men over 50 are allowed to have sex during the day. Although I don’t think with each other, I am not 100% clear on how that is supposed to work.

08/01/2012 Nigeria (RNW)-Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamists on Wednesday claimed suicide blasts at two police posts in the country's northwest and a separate attack at a home belonging to Vice President Namadi Sambo.

The statement also warned that Boko Haram would kill those recruited to spy on the group.

Twin bombings on Monday in the city of Sokoto, the historic seat of Islam in the country, killed two people and wounded 30 others. The bombers also died in the blasts.

"We wish to extend our profound gratitude to Almighty Allah for giving us the opportunity to fulfill the promise we made on launching simultaneous attacks in Sokoto," said the statement from purported Boko Haram spokesman Abul Qaqa.

The statement also claimed that Boko Haram gunmen had fired on Sambo's home in the northern town of Zaria on Monday. One civilian was killed in the assault.

"We are responsible for the attacks ... at the residence of Namadi Sambo," said the statement written in Hausa.

In a message released last month, Qaqa said Boko Haram would "continue to hunt for government officials wherever they are; they will have no peace again."

The group has previously targeted government installations.

Police in Kaduna state, where Zaria is a key town, said they had arrested two of the three gunmen suspected of carrying out the attack on Sambo's house.

Boko Haram has been blamed for the deaths of more than 1,000 people since mid-2009.

Washington: Islamist groups in Pakistan are exaggerating the incidences of ill-treatment of Muslims in Myanmar to recruit people for their cause and fund their own agenda, a report has said.

The international community recently raised concerns about human rights abuses against Muslim Rohingyas following their clashes in June with the Buddhist community.

Human rights activists slammed the Burmese government for failing to protect Rohingyas and to stop the violence that left 78 dead.

But on the streets of Pakistan, the rhetoric runs much hotter with protesters claiming ‘thousands’ of Rohingyas are being slaughtered in western Myanmar, The Christian Science Monitor reports.

According to the report, a series of doctored and misidentified photographs are circulating widely in Pakistani social media that show violence against Rohingyas.

It cited one photo posted on a Facebook page originating from Pakistan showing Buddhists dressed in their traditional red robes standing in the middle of two rows of dead bodies, with the caption reading: "Bodies of Muslims killed by Buddhists."

In reality, this picture was from an earthquake incident in China in 2010, where Tibetan monks came to help with the rescue efforts, the report said.

Shahzad Ahmad, the Pakistan country director for the global online activism group called Bytes for All, pointed out that stories of Muslim victimisation around the world are exaggerated in Pakistan by Islamist groups on the Internet.

“They use such campaigns not only to fund themselves but also to gain more political ground and recruit people for their cause,” the paper quoted Ahmad, as saying.

“Our research shows that there are many fake photographs being used to propagate [stories of] atrocities against Muslims on many of the Facebook pages which originate from Pakistan,” he added.

According to the paper, among the groups involved in stirring the activism are Jamat-ud-Dawa, Jamat-e-Islami and Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam, three Islamist groups which hold significant street power in the country.

¶“On July 19, 2012, on my orders an operation was conducted against the enemies of Allah,” the guerrilla fighter, who identified himself as Muhammad, emir of the mujahedeen of Tatarstan, said in a video posted on an Islamist Internet site that focuses on the predominantly Muslim Caucasus region, includingChechnya.

¶In the video, he is shown sitting in the woods, with an automatic rifle propped against one knee. He specifically named the victims of the attack last month: Valiulla Yakupov, the cleric in charge of Islamic education in Tatarstan, who was shot and killed outside his home in Kazan, the regional capital; and Ildus Faizov, the chief mufti in the region, who survived a car-bomb attack less than an hour later.

¶“All praise Allah,” the jihadist, Muhammad, said in the video. “We believe the operation was a success.” He also warned of further violence against Muslim leaders who do not adhere to Shariah, the strict legal code of Islam based on the Koran.

¶“If any of the imams do not want or cannot carry out the points established by Shariah, they should leave their posts,” he said. “That way, you will be protected from the mujahedeen.”

¶Investigators in Tatarstan, who had already detained at least six people as part of the investigation into the attacks, released photographs on Saturday of two suspects whom they described as “extremely dangerous.” The men were identified as Robert R. Valeev, 35, and Rais R. Mingaleev, 36. “These people organized the killing,” officials said.

¶Mr. Valeev bears a resemblance to the man in the video, though the man in the photo is cleanshaven while the man on video has a beard.

¶The motive of the attacks appeared to be efforts by the two Muslim leaders to combat the spread of radical Islam in the region. Tatarstan has long prided itself on the generally peaceful coexistence of moderate Muslims and Christians. But the region, about 500 miles east of Moscow, has been struggling to cope with the rise of radical Islam, which is espoused by rebel fighters in the Caucasus.

¶President Vladimir V. Putin made reference to such radicalism on Thursday in discussing the case of three young women from a punk band called Pussy Riot who are being tried on charges of hooliganism for staging an unauthorized, profane performance on the altar of Moscow’s main Russian Orthodox cathedral.

¶Mr. Putin said he hoped the women would not be punished too harshly but suggested that the Orthodox Church had already shown more compassion under the circumstances than could be expected from other religions, including Islam. “If they had gone to the Caucasus — you don’t have to go far,” he said, “and desecrated some Muslim shrine — we would not even have had time to put them under our protection.”

Al-Qaeda’s Iraqi affiliate, the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), is making a viscous return to terror prominence as it launches a bloody offensive against the Iraqi government, joins the fight in Syria, and threatens to commit terrorist strikes inside the United States.

In a recording posted July 22 on a jihadist website, the ISI announced its official return atop the terrorist totem pole when it unveiled its new strategic terror plan, “Destroying the Walls,” one whose overarching aim is to reestablish the group’s power in Iraq by retaking the territory it had lost during the war.

To achieve that end, ISI leader Abu Bakr El-Baghdadi promised a violent campaign against the Shiite-dominated Iraqi government, one focused on bombing military installations and police posts, assassinating Iraqi judges and prosecutors, and breaking Islamist prisoners out of Iraqi jails

The following day, the promised jihadist blitzkrieg began in earnest as the ISI launched a coordinated series of roadside and car bomb attacks in 19 cities throughout Iraq, a deadly assault which killed over 110 people and wounded more than 250 others.

Days later, the ISI launched a second offensiveof car bombings in the predominantly Sunni provinces of Diyala and Al Anbar — former al-Qaeda strongholds in western Iraq — an onslaught which killed over 40 people, including 12 Iraqi police.

The al-Qaeda-fueled carnage marked the deadliest month in Iraq since American troops withdrew from the country in December 2011. The second deadliest month was in February when the ISI unleashed a coordinated attack against Iraqi security personnel and civilians in 12 separate Iraqi cities, killing 55.

Al-Qaeda’s bloody blitz, unfortunately, is being abetted by a fractured Iraqi government whose Shiite prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, is engaged in a power struggle with his Sunni opposition, a fight that only helps the ISI’s efforts to reignite Sunni fears of a permanent Shiite takeover of Iraq.

As one Iraqi security official in Diyala said, the intense fighting currently being waged by ISI raised serious concerns “about the capacity of Iraqi forces in the face of the growing strength of al-Qaeda.”

That al-Qaeda strength has been steadily growing since 2008 when the ISI was relegated to the terrorist ash heap after suffering a devastating defeat at the combined hands of Sunni tribal militias and US forces, a defeat that saw the terror group firmly ousted from its territorial strongholds in western Iraq.

Prior to that point the ISI had been the most formidable and dreaded insurgent group facing Coalition forces, one whose stock-in-trade specialty was stoking the sectarian flames between Iraq’s Sunni and Shiite populace

Specifically, the Sunni ISI would target Shiite neighborhoods with bombing and gun attacks, hoping to goad Shiite militias into retaliating against Sunni neighborhoods, a tactic that proved so successful that between 2006-2007 thousands of lives were being lost each month in the internecine warfare.

By late 2007, however, the civil strife began to dissipate with the introduction of the American “surge,” which changed America’s mission from a conventional war to a counterinsurgency, a strategy which focused on winning the “hearts and minds” of the local populace.

Not surprisingly, that strategy gained traction with Sunnis who had grown weary of being offered up for slaughter by the ISI. The result was the celebrated Anbar Awakening that drove ISI from its Iraqi strongholds and killed scores of its top leadership, including ISI founder Abu Musab al Zarqawi.

A police officer who paraded a couple, accused of adultery, naked to the police station was suspended on Saturday.

Earlier on July 28, a team of police officials in the town of Gambat, led by Station House Officer (SHO) Khair Mohammad Samejo arrested a man and two women and charged them with intentions of committing adultery.

A video clip on Saturday, however, purportedly revealed that the law enforcers, led by SHO Samejo, paraded the man and one of the women naked while escorting them to the police station. Locals tried to stop this by helping them put their clothes back on, but the police prevented them from doing so.

On July 30, the accused were produced in court and their bail pleas were accepted. After the issue was taken up by the media, action was taken against SHO Samejo who was subsequently reverted and suspended.

According to sources in the area, Mumtaz often invited escorts to his house, despite strong complaints from his neighbours.

The sources also alleged that SHO Samejo is known for adopting notorious measures for punishing the accused.

Corporal punishment: Accused of theft, seminary boy tortured by his teacher

HARIPUR: 

A seminary student was hospitalised after being tortured by his teacher in Tehsil Ghazi on Sunday.

Thirteen-year-old Waqas Khan was allegedly hung from his feet, beaten with sticks, and repeatedly burnt with hot iron rods for two days by his seminary teacher, who accused him of stealing his mobile phone.

The boy’s father, Dilawar Khan, however, has pardoned the perpetrator on request of a local jirga, according to police and family sources.

Khan, a local nanbai of Ghara village, said he was informed by a student of Madressa Jamia Mohsnia Rizviya Ahyaul Uloom on Saturday that his son was being subjected to severe corporal punishment. When Khan reached the seminary he found his son lying unconscious, beaten and bruised. He said the seminary administration was reluctant in allowing him to take his son to the hospital, but ceded when he protested.

Waqas was admitted to Tehsil Headquarter Hospital, where doctors confirmed that the boy was physical tortured. The hospital’s medical officer, Dr Ayaz, said the boy carries burn marks and bruise all over his body.

When Waqas regained consciousness, he narrated his ordeal, saying that his seminary teacher lost his temper after losing his mobile phone and began accusing him of stealing it. He said his teacher disrobed him and hung him upside down, and repeatedly punched him, beat him sticks and metal bars, and burnt him with hot iron rods trying to make him confess to a crime he did not commit. He said he told the teacher that he did not steal his phone but the teacher was adamant on holding him responsible, he said sobbingly. He vowed never to resume his studies at the seminary.

The boy was tortured for two days before one of his classmates informed his brother-in-law, who then told his father. The accused was arrested but later released by Senior House Officer of Ghazi police station on grounds that the family did not register a criminal case against him.

Human rights activist, Advocate Khursheed Khan, condemned the incident and demanded legal action against the seminary teacher. He alleged that the boy’s poor family was forced into pardoning the perpetrator under pressure and called for probing the incident.

When the boy’s father was asked why he pardoned the teacher, he said, “What else could I have done when everybody was out to support the influential teacher”.

The woman went to a police station to complain about her husband who was maltreating her and beating her for no reason. When the investigating officer asked the woman for the marriage contract she said she does not have one.
She added she got married to the man through ‘urfi’ (Urfi is a kind of Muslim marriage similar to the nikah ceremony but without an official contract. Couples repeat the words, ‘We got married’ and pledge commitment before God. Usually a paper, stating that the two are married, is written and two witnesses sign it) which is considered ‘illegal’ in Kuwait.
It is said most Muslim countries do not recognize urfi marriages and no partner can get a ‘legal’ divorce.

Religious intolerance: Hindu temple vandalised in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: In a brazen act of vandalism, unidentified men sneaked into a Hindu temple in the capital city of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, smashed a holy figurine and burnt down scriptures and images of deities.

“We opened the temple around 6pm and found all holy scriptures and images burnt down. A statuette of Lord Shiva was also smashed to pieces,” Ramesh Lal, a priest at Guru Gorakhnath temple, told The Express Tribune.

The temple is situated in the Gorgathri neighbourhood inside the walled city.

Peshawar, which is believed to be one of the oldest living cities of South Asia, houses dozens of monuments and structures from the Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh and British eras.

The priest said that the community had reported the incident to the local police who gave them the customary cold-shoulder.

“Vandals smashed a statuette of Lord Shiva to pieces and burnt down the holy Gita as well as several images of our deities,” Lal said. The temple, according to him, did not have armed guards because the government pays scant attention to the security needs of a Hindu place of worship.

According to Lal, the 160-year-old temple was named after a Hindu pontiff Guru Goraknath. The local Hindu community had abandoned the temple following the 1947 partition of the subcontinent. For decades no ritual was undertaken within the temple ground until the Peshawar High Court handed over its custody to the Hindu community a few months ago.

“This desecration and vandalism has hurt the religious sentiments of our community. Lack of cooperation from police and administration has added insult to the injury,” Lal said and added that the police were reluctant to concede that the temple had holy images and figurines.

“When the temple was reopened [after the PHC verdict] after almost six decades, we imported a figurine from India which cost us hundreds of thousands of rupees,” Lal claimed.

Haroon Sarblal, a representative of the Hindu community, condemned the incident as ‘unacceptable’. He called upon the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government to arrest the vandals and provide security guards for the temple.

“If the government wants the Hindu community to remain calm, it should arrest the vandals and punish them accordingly,” Sarblal toldThe Express Tribune.

These acts of vandalism and desecration  are a deliberate attempt to create communal tension in the city, he said. However, he vowed that the Hindu community would remain calm and record its protest peacefully.

No group has claimed responsibility for the vandalism – but past attacks on the shrines of Muslim Sufi saints and spiritual figures have been blamed on Taliban insurgents.

Four people, including a young boy, were killed and four others sustained bullet wounds when the parents and relatives of two boys indulged in an armed clash over the theft of a pair of slippers from a mosque after Friday prayers in the Sharafi Goth police limits.

Fazal Mehmood Khan, 52, Sheraz Khan, 40, Dawa Sher, 35 and Hayat Muhammad Khan, 13, were killed, while Zakaullah, Riasat Bibi,

sustained bullet wounds in the clash between two groups near Bilal Masjid situated in Mansehra Colony.

After the incident, the law enforcement agencies personnel rushed to the scene and apprehended six suspects from the spot.

All the dead and the injured were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

According to the SHO Sharafi Goth police station, some children started quarrelling at Bilal Masjid after Friday prayers over the stealing of a pair of slippers and their elders soon got involved in the dispute and resorted to free use of firearms. The clash claimed the lives of four people and left four others injured.

The dispute started

when a boy stole the slippers of his friend from the mosque and during the search one of his neighbours told him the name of the child who did it.

The boy immediately went to his friend’s house and started beating him. Upon coming to know about the incident the elders of the two boys reached the place, took out weapons and targeted the opponents.

Police detained six people from both the sides but no FIR was lodged till the filing of this report.

Fifteen people were killed or injured in tribal fighting in Yemen after a male donkey chased an ass and raped it just near the house of its owner.

Newspapers in Yemen said the owner of the ass got mad after he saw the donkey attacking his animal, prompting him to chase the donkey and hit it.

The attack infuriated the donkey owner, who called his armed tribe men and asked them to take revenge.

“The problem snowballed into an armed fight between Makabis tribe, which owns the donkey, and Bani Abbas which owns the ass…15 people were either killed or injured in the battle,” the Saudi Arabic language daily Aleqtisadiah said, quoting newspapers in Yemen.

A large police force intervened and stopped the fighting at a village in the southwestern province of Abb, newspapers said, adding that police had arrested eight persons involved in the conflict.
