HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Parishoners are in utter disbelief after hearing their priest was arrested, caught in an undercover sting at an adult book store. The priest was arrested Wednesday night at the Big City Adult Book Store along the Gulf Freeway.

Parishoners are using words like "unbelievable" and "unfortunate" to describe the priest's arrest. He's charged with a misdemeanor sex crime and is out of custody in lieu of $1,000 bond.
On Wednesday at about 10:30pm, Houston police say they were conducting an undercover operation at the Big City Adult Book Store off the Gulf Freeway. They arrested Alberto Maullon, 52. Only later did they discover Maullon was pastor at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Nassau Bay.

An undercover police officer told Eyewitness News, "A brief conversation took place which became sexual in nature, leading to the suspect exposing himself to the officer."

The undercover sergeant says an officer had come into contact with Maullon in the video arcade area of the store and that the two moved into a viewing room.

He added, "The door leading to this specific viewing area and this viewing room was open during the entire investigation and the suspect was arrested without incident."

Police wouldn't give further details but court documents indicate the priest is charged with public lewdness for "masturbation in a public place."

Leroy Evans, who lives near the church, said, "It's more troubling to me than anything else that a priest would do something like that."

Parishoner's at St. Paul's are stunned.

"He's a very good guy," said parishioner Julio Acquino-Adayde. "He's a nice guy."

Some, like Acquino-Adayde, want to hear Maullon's side of the story. They want to reserve judgment until then.

He said, "Give him the benefit of the doubt."

A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Galveson-Houston said, "Father Maullon has expressed deep sorrow for any pain or hurt caused by this event and has requested and been granted a leave of absence from his ministerial duties."

Archdiocese Statement Cardinal Daniel Dinardo added, "I ask you to join me in praying for St. Paul Parish and for Father Maullon as he addresses these very personal challenges with his priesthood. May the healing power of God be with all those impacted by this news."

A 49-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old boy in a mosque in Dukathole, Germiston, East Rand police said on Thursday.

The man, who had been with the Dukathole mosque for three months, was arrested at 2am, said Captain Steady Nawa.

The boy was attending a religious lecture on Islam when he was asked to sleep over by the man on August 25, Nawa said.

"During the night the man allegedly raped the boy and promised him R20 for his silence. The boy reported the incident to his mother, who then alerted the police," said Nawa.

The police say that they have arrested a Mullah Imam (a religious cleric who leads the prayers) in connection with the rape of two women in the Imam Sahib District of Kunduz Province.

Police chief of Imam Sahib District, Abdul Qayum Ibrahimi stated the culprit’s name as Mullah Rahmatullah and told PAN that he was an Imam in the mosque of the Baika village and had been arrested two days back as he thought to be involved in the rape of two women.

The police chief said that Mullah Rahmatullah was one of the relatives of Commander Sarbaz, an ex-commander of Junbish-e-Milli and Mohammad Azam, the husband of one of the raped women who also believes that Mullah Rahmatullah is involved in the rape case.

Mohammad Azam had told PAN three days back that a total of four armed men of Commander Sarbaz had raped his and his brother’s wife.

A resident of the Baika Village, he said that these men had knocked on their door at ten at night and after they had not opened the door, one of them jumped inside and broke the lock with the gun butt to let in the other three.

According to him, these men had beat them (he and his brother) with their gun butts, kicked and punched them, tied them up in another room and then raped their wives.

Mohammad Azam’s sister-in-law cried with her baby in her lap and claimed that one of the armed men had put the gun barrel in her mouth and a total of four men had raped her and her brother-in-law’s wife.

The family of the victim claimed that Commander Sarbaz had been appointed as an unofficial commander (referred to local people who are not officially in the government but fight against the government’s opponents in return for money and arms from the government) in Imam Sahib some time back and demanded punishment for the people involved.

Malem Juma Khan, district chief of Imam Sahib said that one of the relatives of Commander Sarbaz and three other men had raped two women but he didn’t name them.

Commander Sarbaz accepted that these women had been raped but refused that his men had been involved. He said he is ready to face the accusers in whatever organization they appeal in and defend his men.

Also Mahboobullah Saidi, spokesperson of the governor of Kunduz, said that they are trying to find the other three men. He assured that the attorney and security forces are working separately to find and arrest the accused and hand them over to the law.

Dhaka (AsiaNews) – A ten-year-old girl was brutally raped on Saturday in Chittagong by Mohammad Moinuddin, the imam of the Chittagong Government Muslim High School. The 42-year-old man said that Satan led him to commit the deed at his shop at Yakubnagar in Firingibazar. The girl was taken to Chittagong’s Medical College Hospital for tests.

Kotwali Police Chief Abul Kalam Azad told AsiaNews that around 6 pm, the imam called the girl as she walked home from school. He then took her to a quiet place where he raped her.

The girl ran home bleeding and told everything to her parents. Her father ran to the place of the crime to apprehend the rapist, who was arrested right after police was informed of the incident.

“My daughter is just ten-years-old,” the father said. “Every time I pray, I cannot but think about what happened. I cannot believe that an imam, a man who learnt from the holy religion of Islam, a man who teaches others, is the same man who raped by daughter. I want justice.”

Deputy police inspector Naznin Sultana Juthee said that the girl’s mother has already filed rape charges against the imam.

Local human rights activists condemned the rape.

"முன்னர் இந்து மதம் உட்பட ஏனைய மதங்களுக்கும் தனித்தனி அமைச்சுகள் இருந்தன. எனது கணவர் (ரி.மகேஸ்வரன்) உட்பட பலரும் இந்து கலாசார அமைச்சுப் பதவியை வகித்திருக்கின்றனர்.

இந்து கலாசார அமைச்சராக இருந்தபோது எனது கணவன் இந்துமதம் தொடர்பிலான பல விடயங்களை செய்திருக்கிறார். எனினும் தற்போது அனைத்து மத அலுவல்களும் ஒரே அமைச்சின் கீழ் கொண்டு வரப்பட்டு விட்டன.

ஆகவே, இந்து மத அலுவல்களுக்கு தனியானதொரு அமைச்சு ஏற்படுத்தப்பட வேண்டும். அப்போது தான் இந்து கலாசாரம் தொடர்பில் நிறைய பணிகளை செய்ய முடியும். இந்து கலாசாரத் திணைக்களத்துக்கும் வசதிகள் ஏற்படுத்திக் கொடுக்கப்பட வேண்டும்.

¶ Her death was confirmed by Lauren Landress, a spokeswoman for the group, the Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India, which is based in what once was an elegant hotel on Mount Washington in Los Angeles.

¶ From 1955 until her death, Sri Daya Mata — her name means “true mother of compassion” in Sanskrit — was the society’s president and spiritual leader. In her flowing ocher sari, she presided over an organization that now has more than 600 temples, centers and retreats in 60 countries, about half of them in the United States. Ms. Landress estimated that the society had “hundreds of thousands” of followers, but said she could not be more specific.

¶ The society, whose monks and nuns adopt Indian names, teaches that there is a unifying truth behind all religious experience, and the group encourages its members to honor their roots in other faiths. Most members follow a vegetarian diet, practice yoga, chant and meditate.

¶ Meditation, Sri Daya Mata said, is a universal balm: “If we turn our consciousness within, in deep meditation, communing with God even a little bit every day, we begin gradually to experience that love which is our real nature.

¶ “Feeling love within ourselves, it is very easy to give it to others.”

¶ The Self-Realization Fellowship was founded in 1920 by the Indian yoga master Paramahansa Yogananda soon after he arrived in the United States as a delegate to the International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston. He became well known as the author of “Autobiography of a Yogi,” which was first published in 1946.

¶ Catherine Wessinger, a professor of the history of religions at Loyola University New Orleans, said on Thursday that Sri Yogananda was “the most significant teacher to popularize Hindu ideas and practices in the United States after the initial one, Swami Vivekananda,” who came to the United States in 1893.

¶ “Of course, in the 1960s, numerous gurus immigrated to the United States,” Dr. Wessinger said, “but the S.R.F. remains influential.”

¶ Sri Daya Mata, who was born Faye Wright in Salt Lake City on Jan. 31, 1914, was a daughter of Clarence and Rachel Wright, who were Mormons. Her grandfather Abraham Reister Wright was an architect of the Mormon Tabernacle.

¶ Faye was 15 when she picked up a copy of the Bhagavad-Gita, a sacred Hindu scripture. Two years later, in 1931, she attended a lecture by Sri Yogananda in Salt Lake City.

¶ Soon after, with her mother’s blessing, she moved to Los Angeles and joined the society. She took her vows in 1932, becoming one of the first nuns of the Self-Realization Fellowship order. Her mother, sister and two brothers later became members of the society as well.

¶ For more than 20 years, Sri Daya Mata was one of Sri Yogananda’s closest disciples, serving as his secretary and helping compile the detailed instructions on yoga meditation that the society distributed by mail order.

¶ In 1955, three years after Sri Yogananda died, she succeeded the Rajarsi Janakananda as president of the society. As a spiritual successor to Sri Yogananda, she supervised the training of disciples who resided in ashrams around the world and the administration of the society’s humanitarian services.

¶ Besides its headquarters, the society owns a 10-acre sanctuary in the Pacific Palisades, near Malibu, Calif., where a temple crowned by a golden lotus was built in 1966 under Sri Daya Mata’s guidance. Followers come from around the country to meditate.

¶ J. Gordon Melton, director of the Institute for the Study of American Religion in Santa Barbara, Calif., who has compiled a census of Hindu groups in the United States, said that while the Self-Realization Fellowship’s “strength still is in Southern California, Daya Mata built a following that it is now a much more substantial national movement.”

திணைக்களத்தின் அழைப்பையேற்று தமிழ்நாடு திருவிடைமருதூர் சைவ சித்தாந்த பயிற்சி மைய ஆதீனப்புலவர், பேராசிரியர் சு.குஞ்சிதபாதம் இவ்வாண்டு வகுப்புகளை நடாத்துவதற்கு வருகை தரவுள்ளார். இவ்வகுப்புகள் தினமும் காலை 9 மணி முதல் நண்பகல் 12 மணி வரையிலும் மாலை நேர வகுப்புகள் தினமும் பிற்பகல் 3 மணி தொடங்கி மாலை 5.30 மணிவரையிலும் நடத்தப்படவுள்ளன.பேராசிரியர் சு.குஞ்சிதபாதம் பல்வேறு நாடுகளுக்கும் சென்றும் சைவசித்தாந்த விரிவுரைகளை நடத்தியுள்ளார். சுமார் நாலாயிரம் பேர் வரை இவரது சைவசித்தாந்த வகுப்புகளில் கலந்து பயன் பெற்றுள்ளமை குறிப்பிடத்தக்கதாகும்.

தொடர்ச்சியாகப் பத்து நாட்கள் நடைபெறவிருக்கும் இந்த சைவசித்தாந்த வகுப்புகளில் ஆர்வலர்கள் அனைவரும் கலந்து கொண்டு பயன்பெற வேண்டுமென திணைக்களம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

இந்து மதத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பூரா பிரஜாபதி என்பவரை திருமணம் செய்துவைக்குமாறு மவைத்தகுரான் கிராமத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ரெஹனா பர்வீன் தனது தந்தையை வலியுறுத்தியதால் அவர் பர்வீனை கழுத்தை நெரித்துக் கொன்றதாக போலீசார் தெரிவித்தனர்.
மவைத்தகுரான் கிராமம் மொரதாபாத் மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ளது. பிரஜாபதியும், பர்வீனும் அந்த கிராமத்துக்கு வெளியே உள்ள வயல்வெளியில் தினமும் சந்தித்து வந்துள்ளனர். ஆனால் சில நாட்களாக பர்வீன் அங்கு வராததால் அவருக்கு ஏதோ ஆபத்து என சந்தேகித்து பிரஜாபதி போலீசை அணுகியுள்ளார். போலீசார் முஸ்தாகீனின் வீட்டை சோதனையிட்டு, அங்கு பூட்டிய அறைக்குள் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த பர்வீனின் உடலை மீட்டனர்.

இந்து முன்னணி நிறுவன அமைப்பாளர் ராம.கோபாலனுக்கு கொலை மிரட்டல் கடிதம் வந்துள்ளதாகவும், அதுதொடர்பாக விசாரித்து உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் போலீஸ் கமிஷனரிடம் புகார் கொடுக்கப்பட்டது.

இந்து முன்னணியின் சென்னை மாவட்ட பொதுச்செயலாளர் இளங்கோ நேற்று சென்னை நகர போலீஸ் கமிஷனர் ராஜேந்திரனை சந்தித்து புகார் மனு ஒன்றை கொடுத்தார். அந்த புகார் மனுவில் கூறியிருப்பதாவது:-

சென்னை சிந்தாதிரிப்பேட்டையில் உள்ள இந்து முன்னணியின் மாநில தலைமை அலுவலகத்துக்கு கடந்த புதன்கிழமை அன்று மர்ம கடிதம் ஒன்று வந்தது. அந்த கடிதத்தில், இந்து முன்னணி மாநில நிறுவன அமைப்பாளர் ராம.கோபாலனுக்கு கொலை மிரட்டல் விடுக்கும் வாசகங்கள் இருந்தன. அதோடு மதக்கலவரம் ஏற்படும் என்றும், குண்டுகள் வெடிக்கும் என்றும், இதனால் கட்டிடங்கள் சிதறும் என்றும் வாசகங்கள் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன.

இதுபோல ஏற்கனவே பல மிரட்டல் கடிதங்கள் வந்துள்ளன. இதுபற்றி புகாரும் அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. தற்போது வந்துள்ள கடிதம் குறித்து உரிய விசாரணை நடத்தி நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்றும், உரிய பாதுகாப்பு ஏற்பாடுகளையும் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்றும் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறேன்.

இவ்வாறு மனுவில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இந்த புகார் மனு மீது விசாரணை நடத்தும்படி உளவுப்பிரிவு போலீசாருக்கு கமிஷனர் ராஜேந்திரன் உத்தரவிட்டார்.

எழுதியவர் பெயர் இல்லை

பின்னர் இந்த மிரட்டல் கடிதம் தொடர்பாக புகார் கொடுத்த இளங்கோ நிருபர்களுக்கு அளித்த பேட்டியில், `மிரட்டல் கடிதம் தமிழில் எழுதப்பட்டிருந்ததாகவும், அதை எழுதியவரின் பெயரும், முகவரியும் இல்லை என்றும், ஆனால் அண்ணா சாலை தபால் அலுவலகத்தில் அந்த மிரட்டல் கடிதம் போஸ்ட் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது என்றும் தெரிவித்தார்.

இந்த கடிதத்தை சாதாரணமாக கருதாமல் போலீசார் உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும்' என்றும் அவர் தனது பேட்டியில் கேட்டுக் கொண்டார்.

இலங்கையில் 4000 இந்து மதகுருமார்கள் உள்ள நிலையில் பௌத்த மத குருமார்களுக்கு கொடுக்கப்படும் சலுகைகள், கௌரவம் எதுவுமே இவர்களுக்கு வழங்கப்படுவதில்லையெனக் குற்றம்சாட்டிய தமிழ்த் தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்பின் மட்டக்களப்பு மாவட்ட எம்.பி.யோகேஸ்வரன், தொல்பொருள் திணைக்களத்தில் அதிகாரி தரத்தில் ஒரு இந்து கூட இல்லையென்றும் கூறினார்.

பாராளுமன்றத்தில் செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை இடம்பெற்ற வரவுசெலவுத் திட்டம் மீதான குழுநிலை விவாதத்தில் உரையாற்றுகையிலேயே இவ்வாறு தெரிவித்த அவர் மேலும் கூறியதாவது; இலங்கை ஒரு இந்து நாடு. ஆனால், இவர்கள் பௌத்த நாடு என்று கூறுகின்றனர். இவர்கள் புத்தராக வழிபடுபவர்கள் ஒரு இந்துவாகப் பிறந்தவர்தான். இதுதான் வரலாறு. இதைத்தான் மகாவம்சம் கூறுகின்றது.

முன்னைய காலத்தில் இந்து மன்னர்கள் பௌத்த மதத்தையும் பௌத்த மன்னர்கள் இந்து மதத்தையும் வளர்த்தனர். ஆனால், அந்த நிலைமை தற்போது மாறிவருகின்றது. இந்து ஆலயங்கள் இடித்தழிக்கப்பட்டு விகாரைகள் அமைக்கப்படுகின்றன. தொல்பொருள் என்ற பேரில் தமிழ் மக்களின் கலாசார சின்னங்கள் உள்ள இடங்கள் ஆக்கிரமிக்கப்படுகின்றன. இதனால் எதிர்காலத்தில் மதப் பிரச்சினைகள் ஏற்பட்டுவிடுமோ என்ற அச்சம் எமக்கு ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது.

வடக்கு, கிழக்கு மாகாணங்களில் இடம்பெறும் இந்து ஆலய அழிப்புகள், கலாசார இட ஆக்கிரமிப்புகளில் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட வர்க்கத்தினரே ஈடுபட்டுள்ளார்கள். தொல்பொருள் திணைக்களத்தில் ஒரு தமிழர் கூட இல்லை. எனவே இத்திணைக்களத்தில் இந்துக்களையும் அதிகாரிகளாக நியமிக்க வேண்டும். வடக்கு, கிழக்கில் நடந்த யுத்தத்தினால் பல ஆலயங்கள் சேதமடைந்துள்ளன. அழிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. அவற்றை புனரமைக்க ஒதுக்கப்பட்ட நிதி போதாத நிலையுள்ளதனால் நிதி ஒதுக்கீட்டை அதிகரிக்க வேண்டும்.

1516 இந்து அறநெறிப் பாடசாலைகள் 8130 அறிநெறி ஆசிரியர்களுடன் இயங்கிவருகின்றன. இந்த ஆசிரியர்களுக்கு வேதனம் இல்லை. அவர்கள் தமது பணியை சேவையாகச் செய்து வருகின்றார்கள். ஆனாலும் நீண்ட காலமாகவே இவர்கள் சேவையாற்றி வருவதால் அவர்களுக்கு வேதனம் வழங்க நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும். அத்துடன் அவர்களுக்கு அரச நியமனம் வழங்கவும் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க அரசு முன்வரவேண்டும்.

ஆலயப் புனரமைப்புகளுக்கென நிதி ஒதுக்கப்பட்டாலும் அந்த நிதி பிரதேச செயலகங்களுக்கே வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. அவர்கள் கிராம அபிவிருத்தி சங்கத்திடம் வழங்குகின்றனர். அவர்கள் ஆலய புனரமைப்பை முடியுங்கள் தருகின்றோம் என்கிறார்கள். இதனால் பல சிக்கல்கள், தாமங்கள் ஏற்படுகின்றன. எனவே ஆலய புனரமைப்புகளுக்கென ஒதுக்கப்படும் நிதியை நேரடியாக ஆலயத்திடமே வழங்க நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படவேண்டும்.

இலங்கையில் 4000 க்கு மேற்பட்ட இந்த மதகுருமார் உள்ளனர். ஆனால், பௌத்த மத குருமார்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்படுகின்ற கௌரவம், வழங்கப்படுகின்ற சலுகைகள் எதுவும் கிடைப்பதில்லை. நீதிமன்றங்கள், பஸ்கள், ரயில்கள், பொது இடங்கள், வைத்தியசாலைகளில் பௌத்த குருமார்களுக்கு பல சலுகைகள் வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. ஆனால் இவை எதுவும் இந்து மதகுருமார்களுக்கு வழங்கப்படுவதில்லை. இது தொடர்பில் அரசு கவனம் செலுத்துவதில்லை.

யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் உள்ள வரலாற்றுப் பெருமை பெற்ற யாழ்.சிவன் கோயில், நாச்சிமார் கோவில் ஆகியன வீதி அபிவிருத்தி என்ற பெயரில் பாதிக்கப்படப்போகின்றன. இதற்கு அனுமதிக்க முடியாது. வீதி அபிவிருத்தித் திட்டத்துக்கு முன்பாகவே அக்கோயில்கள் தோற்றம் பெற்றன.

எமது ஆலய நிர்மாணப்பணிகளில் ஈடுபட இந்திய கலைஞர்கள் ஆர்வமாகவுள்ளனர். அதற்கான ஏற்பாடுகளை அரசு செய்யவேண்டும்.

எமது சில இந்து ஆலயங்களில் உயிர்ப்பலிகள் கொடுக்கப்படுகின்றன. இதனை ஒருபோதும் அனுமதிக்க முடியாது. எனவே இந்த உயிர்ப்பலி முறையை தடுக்க அரசு உடனடியாக சட்டம் ஒன்றைக் கொண்டு வரவேண்டும்.

JAMMU: Twenty-eight children from Ladakh, including four girls, were rescued by the police from a Jammu hostel run by an NGO. Five members of Jammu-based NGO, Youth Movement for Peace (YMP), were arrested after parents complained that the children had been kidnapped.

The children are victims of flash floods in August following a cloudburst in Leh. A police team will take them to their houses in Ladakh. According to a senior police officer, ''The children will be handed over to their parents and the Ladakh Buddhist Council.'' Till then, the police have arranged for their stay in Ladakh-Kargil House near Jammu railway station.

According to police, YMP had visited Leh after the disaster to distribute aid and relief material like blankets. YMP members promised the children a better life and brought them to Jammu after the disaster, said police. They were kept in a rented accommodation in Jammu's Dogra Hall. Some parents complained to the police that the children had been taken away by YMP without their consent.

During a late night raid on Friday at YMP headquarters at Reshamgarh Colony and Dogra Hall, the children were rescued. Five YMP members, including its chairman Vikas Sharma, general secretary Gagandeep Singh and his wife Meenakshi who is a manager at YMP, were arrested.

According to sources, the children were probably brought to Jammu for religious conversion. Earlier, YMP had been accused of conversion and its funding had come under scanner. A police team led by DIG Farooq Khan had begun investigation. During the probe, YMP failed to give satisfactory reasons for bringing the Ladakh children to Jammu, said sources.

AHMEDABAD/NEW DELHI: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s attempts to endear himself to the minorities in his state appears to be paying off with the elections to the rural and urban local bodies seeing the victory of over 100 Muslim candidates and quite a few Christians on the saffron party’s ticket.

While the exact number of minority candidates who won the elections to the panchayats and municipalities on the BJP ticket is yet to be ascertained, early reports indicated that over 100 Muslim and Christian candidates had romped home, confirming the trend that the minorities were finally building bridges with the ruling party in Gujarat.

The first indication to this effect came from the verdict of the Kathlal assembly by-election. A constituency falling in central Gujarat, it had, since the state’s creation in 1950, always returned Congress candidates to the state assembly. Muslims comprised 65% of the electorate in the assembly segment. The BJP astounded political pundits by wresting the seat from the Congress by a huge margin.

In the elections to the six municipal corporations held last month, the BJP had fielded 12 candidates from the Muslim community. Even though only one—Ms Babiben Habibbhai Sama—finally emerged victorious, from Rajkot, the remaining candidates lost by wafer-thin margins. The party followed it up by fielding 21 Christian candidates hailing from both Catholic and Protestant sects in various taluka and panchayat polls in the districts of Surat, Tapi and the Dangs in south Gujarat. Most of these candidates have emerged as winners.

“Over 100 Muslim candidates have won on the BJP ticket. Muslim candidates have crossed a century of winners. Christians and Muslims are voting for the BJP. They’re disillusioned with vote-bank politics. Muslims have accepted the BJP’s development politics. This is a turning point of India’s political journey,’’ Mr Modi told newspersons after the results of the panchayats and municipalities were declared on Saturday. The verdict confirmed the BJP’s total domination over urban, semi-urban and rural areas of Gujarat. After trouncing Congress in municipal corporation elections, the ruling party maintained its winning streak in panchayats and elections to the remaining civic bodies.

The counting for elections to 24 district panchayats, 208 taluka panchayats and 53 municipalities, which were held on Thursday, was held across the state on Saturday.

Out of the 24 district panchayats, BJP won a clear majority in 2,1 while the Congress could get a majority only in Gandhinagar and Tapi. The district panchayat of Bharuch produced a hung verdict.

Out of the 208 taluka panchayats, results of 157 were declared, in which BJP won 122, Congress 20 and JD(U) two, while in the three taluka panchayats, the verdict was fractured.

In the 53 municipalities elections, the BJP won 42 seats, while the Congress and others got four seats respectively. In Porbandar, both the BJP and Congress had won 21 seats each out of the total 42 seats.

State Congress president Siddharth Patel resigned after the polls results, owning moral responsibility for the defeat. He has sent his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi.

காஷ்மீர் விவகாரத்தில் நவாஸ்ஷெரீப் முதுகெலும்பு இல்லாதவராக இருந்தார். இதனால்தான் நாங்கள் (அப்போது ராணுவத் தலைமைத் தளபதியாக இருந்தார் முஷாரப்) ரகசியமாக போராளிகளை உருவாக்கி அனுப்பி வைக்க நேரிட்டது. மேலும், காஷ்மீர்ப் பிரச்சினை குறித்து உலகமும் கண்களை மூடியபடி இருந்ததால் நாங்களே அதில் தலையிட நேர்ந்தது.

தனது சக இனத்தவர்கள் உரிமைக்காக போராடி வரும்போது அதே இனத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள், உதவுவது உலக இயல்புதானே என்று கூறியுள்ளார் முஷாரப்.

தற்போது இங்கிலாந்தில் தலைமறைவு வாழ்க்கை நடத்தி வருகிறார் முஷாரப். சமீபத்தில்தான் அனைத்து பாகிஸ்தான் மக்கள் கட்சி என்ற புதிய கட்சியையும் தொடங்கினார் என்பது நினைவிருக்கலாம்.

A Saudi prince murdered his servant in an attack which had a "sexual element", the Old Bailey has heard.

Bandar Abdulaziz, 32, was found beaten and strangled in the Landmark Hotel, Marylebone, central London, on 15 February.

The court was told Saud Abdulaziz bin Nasser al Saud had carried out several assaults on the victim before he died.

Mr al Saud, 34, admits manslaughter but denies murder and one count of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The jury has been asked to decide whether he is guilty of manslaughter or murder.

When the body was found the prince claimed his aide had been attacked and robbed three weeks before his death.

But the jury was told Mr al Saud carried out the killing - and injuries including bite marks to Mr Abdulaziz's face showed the "ferocity of the attack to which he had been subjected".


Bandar Abdulaziz was found beaten and strangled in the Landmark Hotel The prince has claimed he was "friends and equals" with his servant and denied being gay.

Jonathan Laidlaw QC, prosecuting, said: "The evidence establishes quite conclusively that he is either gay or that he has homosexual tendencies.

"It is clear that his abuse of Bandar was not confined simply to physical beatings.

"There is clear evidence, over and above the bite marks, that there was also a sexual element to his mistreatment of the victim."

The court heard that the prince and his aide had been staying together at the hotel since 20 January as part of an extended holiday.

Mr Abdulaziz's body was found with blood on the pillow and the defendant appeared "shocked and upset", the court heard.

Mr al Saud told police officers they had been drinking in the hotel bar until the early hours of the morning before returning to the room and that when he woke at about 1500 GMT he could not rouse the victim.

The prince had tried to clean up some of the blood and wash some of Mr Abdulaziz's bloodstained clothing, Mr Laidlaw said.

'Sexual connotation'

Bloodstains found in the room were "consistent with the victim having been the subject of a series of separate assaults before he was killed", the jury heard.


The prince admits killing his servant but denies murder Asked by police about the injuries suffered by the victim, Mr al Saud said he had been robbed three weeks earlier on Edgware Road, in central London.

But CCTV footage showed the prince attacking his servant in the lift of the hotel on two separate occasions in previous weeks and kicking him outside a restaurant on the night of his death.

The post-mortem examination showed Mr Abdulaziz had suffered heavy blows to his head and face, leaving his left eye closed and swollen, his lips split and his teeth chipped and broken.

There were also injuries to his neck, ears and internal organs, bleeding to the brain and a rib fracture.

"There were bite marks to his cheeks, which had 'an obvious sexual connotation," Mr Laidlaw said.

The case continues.

ERBIL, Iraqi Kurdistan: An extremist Islamic scholar threatens Kurds that they no longer be tolerated in the Arab and Muslim world, accusing them of being “infidels who encourage hostility against Islam and its followers.”


“There is no life for you to live here with and among us. You should not expect anything from Muslims but war and hostility,” said Abu Basir Al-Tartusi, who has been described as "primary Salafi opinion-makers guiding the jihadi movement”

Al-Tartusi’s letter comes at a time when the US has reduced the size of its troops into almost 50,000 and is preparing for a full withdrawal scheduled to happen by the end of 2011.

The Kurds, who have always seen the Americans and West as their friends and allies, have been subjected to genocide and ethnic cleansing by the Arab, Turkish and Persian regimes of the Middle East.

Al-Tartusi, whose real name Abd-al Mun'em Mustafa Halima Abu Basir, is originally from Syria. His wife is a Palestinian. He now lives in London.

“You have fought against Arabs and other nationals. For the ascendency of your ignorant cause of nationalism, you have fought against Islam and its followers,” said Al-Tartusi, in a recent open letter in reference to the Kurds of Iraq and Syria.

“You have become allies with crusades and relied on them against Islam and the Muslims,” said Al-Tartusi adding that the Kurds had helped the US and Western powers to occupy Iraq.

Dr. Arafat Karim, an Iraqi expert in Islamism, said that Tartusi “is a person psychologically extremist. He has no knowledge about the religion and Kurds.”

“There are a number of extremist Muslims here in Kurdistan who misinform Tartusi about the situation of the Kurdistan Region,” said Karim.

“He issues bad fatwas [verdicts] attacking Kurds based on disinformation. This man has no knowledge about the history of the Kurds.”

Tartusi has considered Saddam Hussein a Muslim and prayed for him to be in the heaven.

“Without Islam, you will never enjoy your life,” said Al-Tartusi.

HYDERABAD: Miscreants set fire to a prayer hall belonging to a sect of a community in Talabkatta on Sunday. Police suspect that the members of another sect of the same community could be behind the incident.

According to the Rein Bazar police, miscreants set ablaze the side walls made of cloth of a makeshift mosque, Masjid-e-Ibrahim-Khaleelullah, located at Madina Nagar in Yakutpura in the early hours of Sunday.

Four months ago, one Mohammed Khizer of Talabkatta had purchased the asbestos sheet-roofed house at Madina Nagar and converted it into a prayer hall recently.

According to police, people belonging to the Alhadees sect of Islam offer prayers at the place regularly.

When the incident happened, no one was inside the place of worship. "At about 5 am, I came here along with 15 others to offer Fajar prayers at the mosque and to our shock, we noticed that the mosque lock was broken and the holy Quran, Paras, Janimaaz and curtain walls on fire," Khizer said in his complaint to the police commissioner. Additional police commissioner Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao visited the spot.

Acting on the complaint lodged by Khizer, the Rein Bazar police registered cases under sections 153-A (spreading animosity between classes) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Two Algerian Christians have been tried for breaking Ramadan fasting rules, with hundreds of people protesting outside the courtroom against judicial authorities.

Hocine Hocini, 44, and Salem Fellak, 34, were arrested on August 13 on the building site where they worked in the northern region of Kabylie after they were spotted eating lunch.

The pair admit to eating but insist it happened in a discreet place.

Muslims are not allowed to eat during daylight hours during the Ramadan holy month.

In Algeria breaking the fast can be punished with three months in jail.

"I am optimistic," Hocini, a Protestant with a one-month-old daughter, said as he left the courtroom in Ain el Hammam after the hearing.

"I have no regrets, I'm Christian and assume my responsibilities. We are innocent, and we haven't done any harm to anyone.

"We are Christians and we have not eaten in a public place."

The verdict is due on October 5.

The prosecutor called for the full three months in prison for both men.

Hundreds of people supporting the two accused gathered outside the court at Ain el Hammam and shouted slogans against the legal system.

Defence lawyer Mokrane Ait Larbi said the charges violate the constitution.

"Algeria has ratified international conventions on freedom of religion. This is a violation pure and simple of the constitution," he said.

The north African country has a small Christian population, estimated by a Kabylie pastor at 30,000, living amid its Muslim majority.

The ministry of religious affairs says there are 11,000 Christians for a total population of 35.6 million Algerians.

According to the rights group SOS Libertes, formed by intellectuals who came together in 2008, a group of 10 people will appear before the tribunal at Akbou in Kabylie on November 8, on the same charge of breaking the Ramadan fast.

(Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai chose a female, Hindu candidate when he voted in Saturday's parliamentary election, two palace officials close to him said.

Just two Hindu candidates were on the list of about 600 vying for parliamentary seats in the Afghan capital. Karzai's choice could annoy supporters in deeply conservative, Muslim Afghanistan.

His backers include powerful ex-warlords who were fielding their own candidates and religious conservatives who are opposed to female politicians and unlikely to be happy Karzai is backing a non-Muslim.

"It was Anar Kali Honaryar," one palace official told Reuters, giving the name of a female activist who largely relied on Muslim supporters during her campaigning.

Hindus and Sikhs lived in Afghanistan and dominated trade long before the advent of Islam in the 7th century.

Their numbers shrank over the centuries and tens of thousands of those who remained fled Afghanistan after civil war broke out in 1992, leaving just a few thousand behind.

Women are a minority in Afghan public life, although 25 percent of the 249 seats in parliament are reserved for them.

Many of the 406 female candidates running in the election have been a particular target for threats and intimidation, and overall women's grip on rights won since the 2001 ouster of the Taliban -- like education and the vote -- remains tenuous.

Karzai's wife joined the millions of Afghans who did not make it to the polls -- although not because of the security concerns or frustration about corruption that kept others away.

The couple's only child is sick and she did not want to leave him alone, Karzai told a female election worker who later recounted the conversation to a Reuters reporter.

The BJP today broke into a Congress bastion in Gujarat, bagging the Kathlal Assembly seat for the first time in five decades. The party claimed it has won the support of Muslims for the first time since the 2002 riots and that it could even field Muslim candidates in the forthcoming civic polls.

In the by-election, Kanu Dabhi won by over 21,000 votes, defeating his nearest Congress rival Ghelabhai Zala. Dabhi secured 62,120 votes while Zala polled 40,573 votes.

With this win, the strength of the BJP in the 182-member state Assembly increased to 122. The main opposition Congress has 54 MLAs while others hold six seats.

Savouring the victory, Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who turned 61 today, fired a salvo at the Congress, saying “people have defeated every conspiracy of the Congress and CBI”.

“This is people’s support for development-oriented politics,” Modi told reporters in Gandhinagar shortly after his party’s win in the by-election necessitated due to the death of sitting Congress MLA Gautam Zala.

Dalit girl’s kidnap case registered

KARACH: The Chakiwara police registered the first information report (FIR) against former UC Nazim Baber Sultan, Uzma, Aisha for kidnapping a 13-year-old Dalit girl Poonam for forced conversion to Islam. The Chakiwara police station duty officer told Daily Times that the father of the girl Dahrho Mal lodged FIR No 244/10 under section 361, against the kidnappers and the main accused is former UC Nazim Baber Sultan. The alleged accused Baber Sultan while talking to Daily Times said the girl had converted to Islam at Binoria and now she is a Muslim named Mariam. “I fulfilled my duty as a perfect Muslim and knew that an FIR was lodged against me”, Sultan said. The girl was kidnapped from her neighbourhood in Lyari Town on September 8, her uncle Bhanwroo had earlier revealed. It is worth mentioning that the Daily Times staffer who had earlier reported the news is receiving death threats on his phone. “I have received several calls from several PCO numbers. A man ripped pages from a Koran and lit them aflame at a protest near the proposed site of a community center and mosque near Ground Zero on Saturday.

"If they can burn American flags, I can burn the Koran," shouted the unidentified man. "America should never be afraid to give their opinion."

The man was led away by police but did not appear to be arrested.

The display - apparently prompted by Florida Pastor Terry Jones' plan to burn the holy books - occurred as families who lost loved ones during the attacks commemorated the ninth anniversary at Ground Zero.

Hours earlier, Jones told NBC's "Today" that he would not burn Korans and instead wanted to meet with the imam from Park51.

Official demonstrations - sponsored by the Tea Party Patriots and Stop Islamization of America - were slated to start following the Ground Zero ceremony. But protestors on both sides of the controversy arrived mid-morning.

Many held American flags and signs reading "Honor the Fallen. Honor Our Freedoms."

"Muslim and democracy are irreconcilable," said Lance Corey, 61, a retired history teacher from the Bronx. "I have a problem with fundamentalists."

"Muhammad is very intolerant. There's a dark side to Islam. I cannot tolerate intolerance," he said.

Counter protestors also filled the streets near Ground Zero to stand up for the Park51 project.

"This is our country too. We are as much a victim as everyone else," said Mosad Almontaser, 55, of Brooklyn Heights. The school teacher said he moved to the U.S. 40 years ago from Yemen.

"It's very hurtful that a couple of nuts ruined how people see us. We have nothing to do with 9/11," he said.

In Kabul, more than 10,000 Afghans set fire to tires in the streets and shouted "Death to America" for a second day in a row, also prompted by Jones' calls to burn the Islamic holy book.

KARACHI: A 13-year-old Dalit girl was kidnapped from her house in Lyari Town.

Her uncle Bhanwroo said the girl Poonam was kidnapped from the neighbourhood on Wednesday. When the neighbours informed the family of her presence at a Madrassa in Lyari, they went there.

“She was very scared and under the influence of maulvis. She told us they will not let her go, so she will stay with them as a Muslim,” said Bhanwroo.

He said the family contacted the Chakiwara Police to lodge an FIR of kidnapping, but they refused to register the case.

SP Lyari Khadim Hussain Rind told Daily Times that lodging an FIR would not make any difference, as it will be cancelled during court proceedings.

Priest sex abuse linked to 13 suicides in Belgium

BRUSSELS — Hundreds of sex abuse victims have come forward in Belgium with harrowing accounts of molestation by Catholic clergy that reportedly led to at least 13 suicides and affected children as young as two, a special commission said Friday.

Professor Peter Adriaenssens, chairman of the commission, said the abuse in Belgium may have been even more rampant than the 200-page report suggests.

"Reality is worse than what we present here today because not everyone shares such things automatically in a first contact with the commission," he told reporters.

Adriaenssens, a child psychiatrist who has worked with trauma victims for 23 years, said nothing had prepared him for the stories of abuse that blighted the lives of victims.

"We don't just talk about touching. We are talking about oral and anal abuse, forced masturbation and mutual masturbation. We talk about people who have gone through serious abuse," Adriaenssens said.

Most of the abuse happened during the 1960s and 1970s, he said.

The Roman Catholic Church in Belgium experienced the findings as "a body blow," Adriaenssens said.

Belgian Archbishop Andre-Joseph Leonard said he would react on Monday to the report. The Vatican had no immediate comment.

But Tournai Bishop Guy Harpigny, who deals with the issue for the church, praised Adriaenssens's work and told VRT television that "now, the time has come to listen to the victims."

The report's findings are the latest embarrassment for Belgium's Catholic Church, which is still reeling after the April resignation of Bruges Bishop Roger Vangheluwe, who admitted to having sexually abused a nephew for years when he was a priest and bishop.

Friday's report said 507 witnesses came forward with stories of molestation at the hands of clergy over the past decades. It says those abused included children who were two, four, five and six years old.

Family members or friends said 13 victims committed suicide that "was related to sexual abuse by clergy," the report said. Six other witnesses said they had attempted suicide.

"It is notable how often one issue comes back in the witness reports: the high number of suicides," the report said.

The number of those coming forward with their stories and testimonies, however, could be only a fraction of those actually abused, Adriaenssens said. He added several priests cooperated with the panel, which had the support of the Belgian church.

"We saw how priests, called up by the commission and asked to help seek the truth, were willing to set up the list of 10, 15, 20 victims they abused during boarding school while the commission knew only of one," he said.

Archbishop Leonard, who was appointed earlier this year, said he will come forward with a new initiative Monday on how to deal with cases of abuse, prevent further abuse and help victims seek closure.

His spokesman Jurgen Mettepenningen said the archbishop didn't comment Friday so as not to distract attention from the report's contents.

Leonard's predecessor, Cardinal Godfried Danneels, acknowledged Wednesday that damage control often took precedence in Belgium over concerns for victims in sexual abuse cases involving clergy.

The crisis in the Belgian church was exacerbated last month, when secret tapes were published of Danneels speaking with the man whom Vangheluwe abused and suggesting a cover-up until Vangheluwe was to retire in 2011. Danneels said Wednesday he should have asked Vangheluwe to resign immediately.

குடவாசல் அருகே உள்ள திருவிடைச்சேரியில் ஜமீத் முகைதீன் பள்ளிவாசல் உள்ளது. இந்த பள்ளிவாசலில் இமாமாக இருந்தவர் முகமது இஸ்மாயில் (55).

இந்த பள்ளிவாசலில் தொழுகை நடத்துவது தொடர்பாக இரு பிரிவினர் இடையே மோதல் இருந்து வந்தது.

திருவிடைச்சேரியை சேர்ந்த குத்புதீன் என்பவர் வீட்டில் ஒரு பிரிவினர் தொழுகை நடத்துவது வழக்கம். குத்புதீன் வீட்டுக்கு எதிர் வீட்டில் வசிக்கும் இன்னொரு பிரிவை சேர்ந்த இதயதுல்லா இதற்கு எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்தார்.

இங்கு தொழுகை நடத்துவதால் தனக்கு இடையூறாக இருப்பதாக அவர் கூறியதால் குத்புதீனுக்கும் இதயதுல்லாவுக்கும் இடையே மோதல் ஏற்பட்டு முன்விரோதம் உருவானது. இதனால் அந்த பகுதியில் பதட்டமான சூழ்நிலை நீடித்து வந்தது.

குத்புதீனின் உறவினர் ஹாஜி முகமது (40). இவர் தஞ்சை மாவட்டம் திருவிடைமருதூர் அருகே உள்ள குறிச்சிமலையில் வசித்து வருகிறார்.

தன்னிடம் இதயதுல்லா மற்றும் அவரது தரப்பினர் தகராறு செய்வது தொடர்பாக ஹாஜி முகமதுவிடம் குத்புதீன் கூறினார். இதனால் ஹாஜி முகமது மற்றும் அவரது தரப்பினர் 15 பேர் நேற்று இரவு 3 கார்களில் திருவிடைச்சேரி சென்றனர்.

பள்ளிவாசலில் இருந்த இமாம் முகமது இஸ்மாயிலிடம் ஹாஜி முகமது மற்றும் அவரது ஆதரவாளர்கள் வாக்குவாதத்தில் ஈடுபட்டனர். இமாமின் ஆதரவாளர்கள் அவருக்கு ஆதரவாக பேசினர். சற்று நேரத்தில் இரு தரப்பினருக்கும் இடையே பெரும் கை கலப்பு ஏற்பட்டு மோதலாக மாறியது.

அப்போது சற்றும் எதிர்பாராத வகையில், ஹாஜி முகம்மது தன்னிடம் இருந்த கைத் துப்பாக்கியை எடுத்து சரமாரியாக சுடவே, குண்டு பாய்ந்து இமாம் இஸ்மாயில் மற்றும் அஜீத் முகமமது என்ற 60 வயது முதியவர் ஆகியோர் சம்பவ இடத்திலேயே பரிதாபமாக உயிரிழந்தனர்.

சம்பவத்தின்போது அங்கிருந்த காஜா மைதீன் (41), பால்ராஜ் (55), ராமதாஸ் (45), சந்தியாகு (26) ஆகிய 4 பேர் படுகாயம் அடைந்தனர். துப்பாக்கிச் சூட்டால் பெரும் பதட்டமாகி அங்கு நின்றிருந்தவர்கள் சிதறி ஓடினர்.

இதைப் பயன்படுத்திக் கொண்டு ஹாஜி முகம்மது மற்றும் அவரது தரப்பு ஆட்கள் அங்கிருந்து ஓடி விட்டனர்.

எஸ்.பி.மூர்த்தி தலைமையில் போலீஸார் திரண்டு வந்தனர். உயிரிழந்த இருவரின் உடல்களும் மீட்கப்பட்டன. காயமடைந்தவர்கள் திருவாரூர் அரசு மருத்துவமனைக்கு அனுப்பி வைக்கப்பட்டனர்.

முகம்மதுவின் தம்பி ரபீக் பிடிபட்டார்:

துப்பாக்கியால் சுட்டு இரண்டு பேரைக் கொன்று விட்டுத் தலைமறைவான முகம்மதுவை தேடி போலீஸார் அவரது வீட்டுக்குச் சென்றனர்.ஆனால் அவர் வீட்டில் இல்லை. வீட்டை சோதனையிட்ட போலீஸார் அங்கிருந்த லைசென்ஸ் இல்லாத 2 கைத் துப்பாக்கிகளை பறிமுதல் செய்தனர்.மேலும் முகம்மதுவின் தம்பி ரபீக்கைப் பிடித்து விசாரணை நடத்தினர்.

சம்பவம் நடந்த திருவிடைச்சேரியில் பெரும் பதட்டம் நிலவுவதால் மத்திய மண்டல ஐஜி கரன் சின்ஹா அங்கு முகாமிட்டுள்ளார்.இது போக தஞ்சை, நாகை, திருவாரூர் எஸ்.பிக்களும் முகாமிட்டுள்ளனர்.


ASWJ activist shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI: Two people, including an activist of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), were shot dead in separate incidents on Friday.

In the first incident, an ASWJ activist, Yasir, was sitting outside his house when unidentified culprits came in a rickshaw and opened fire on him. He died instantly.

Separately, a labourer was gunned down in the Sacchal police precincts. According to police, Muhammad Farooq was on his way home on a motorcycle when assailants opened fire on him, killing him on the spot.

Fourteen militants killed in central Kurram Agency PARACHINAR: At least 12 people were killed in a clash between two tribes in a row over the distribution of irrigation water in Pakistan’s Kurram tribal region on Friday, reports quoted officials and residents as saying.

The clash occurred between the Shalozan and Shalozan Tangi tribes in upper Kurram.

Clashes between the two tribes had been going on for a week and at least 27 people have been killed as a result. More than 40 people have been injured in the clashes.

Heavy arms were used in fighting and several people were also injured during today's clash.
